Hey guys I plan on getting a Nexus 4 soon and I would like to know how it handles videos beforehand.
If possible could you guys treat the following:
High bitrate 1080p mkv playback (BD encodes if possible)
720p 10bit mkvs
1080p 10bit mkvs
You could try to play 1440p ones but I don't really mind.
What formats does the player in 4.2 support?
Does it support subtitles?
Had any problems with specific audio codecs?
I'm concerned about this because sadly the Nexus 10 can't handle 1080p 10bit mkvs, that was to be expected though, however I think that the superior CPU in the Nexus 4 might be able to do just that and the Exynos 5250 with it's Mali T604 was able to play 1440p (or 2600k as some of you may call it) and I was wondering if the Adreno 320 could do that.
Thanks.
What do you mean " can't handle it"? The nex 10 has one of the most powerful CPUs in any tablet. That dual core is amazing.

According to the guys in the thread in the Nexus 10 general it doesn't play smoothly, it drops frames as it's SW decoded, it was to be expected, while the Nexus 10 has a better CPU than any other tablet the difference is not by much (as each A15 is a little more powerful than 2 A9s at the same frequency) and quad A9s can't handle 1080p 10bit mkvs, the Nexus 10 does a bit better though doesn't play them with a watchable frame rate.
Why use a format that needs PC to run? Can't you convert those to a more usable format?

Just tried a Bluray rip of Cars and it played perfectly in MX player minus the sound of course since it was lossless audio. I don't have any 10bit videos at all but if you can point me to a short clip of one I'll be gald to check it out.
I used them because 10bit looks better and it's a pain to convert them
Here man, that's weird I thought MX handled most lossless audio formats, could you try BSPlayer too?
1080p 10bit ones: http://android.tnonline.net/Software/Video/Hi10P Software/
Some other test files: http://www.cccp-project.net/beta/test_files/
Thanks bro.
Puss in Boots trailer you linked to plays fine in Dice Player.
The 10bit hotd blah file does not however.
Also tried BSPlayer but that crashes on opening.

I thought that nex 10 would be amazing for video. The resolution is incredible and the CPU as well.
If I did not already have this nexus 7 and a nex 4 coming I would grab the 10 in a heartbeat.

Don't mistake me, it IS amazing but 10bit, while superior, isn't used much so GPU makers don't make it so their can decode them leaving that task to the CPU which isn't designed to do it.
What happened with the hotd video? Was it choppy? Did it play at all? Thanks

10-bit videos cannot be played without using software decoding. The OP is asking if the CPU on the Nexus 4 is powerful enough for that. The vast majority of mobile devices fail at this task. Only a few phones can even come close to playing a 720p 10-bit file, and even then they aren't perfectly smooth. I, too, am wondering this OP. When I get my phone tomorrow, this is one of the first things I will be testing out.

What about MX or BSPlayer? They play 10bit videos in my TouchPad and SGS2 but as they lack the raw power they are choppy. (they have also proven to be the best players on Android, at least for me)
Edit: Exactly what IAmAN00bie said.

Problem with the Nexus 10 is the resolution is more than the GPU can handle.
Anyone tried XBMC on the Nexus 4 or Nexus 10? I literally know nothing about XBMC for Android right now, but I have never had a bad experience with XBMC on any platform.

That isn't related to the video playback problem in with 10bit videos, the Nexus 10 plays videos that take full advantage of it's resolution without hiccups when the GPU is handling the load, 10 bit videos are not HW decoded and thus all the load is thrown at the CPU (which isn't made to decode videos)

Or
you mean 2160p which is 3840*2160 resolution

Currently, tegra2 devices have problem on h264 playback.
But, Optimus 2x updated their firmware and enabled it.
I am using Atrix and wanted to play h264 on my phone.
Of course DICE player can hardware accelerate it but not by streaming flash.
And other players still have problem.
I did a test on several movies and found a interesting thing.
High profile movies are not really different from baseline profile movies.
Here's some example.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/52685869/CES-News First Look on Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6.mp4
http://db.tt/ULTADHdo
These two files are exactly same movie file exept profile info on file's header.
(I didn't reencoded it!)
I've downloaded this from youtube and just changed the movie file.
So upper one is just a copy of youtube 720p h264 high profile,
and bottom one is same file except I modified profile info to baseline.
If you play upper one from tegra device, it says file cannot be hardware accelerated or not supported.
But, bottom one can be hardware acceerated and played on android stock player.
So the idea is, if we can change the profile detection method of android,
tegra2 will try to support hardware accelrate on more files.
Maybe even youtube 720p can be streamed on tegra2!
I've searched through android source and found this.

This is from https://github.com/Atrix-Dev-Team/a...gingerbread/media/libstagefright/OMXCodec.cpp
Since I am completely out of programming things,
I can't modify these codes. But somebody should be able to do this.
Help me please!
EDIT- Adding method what I tried on changing profile.
I used HEX editor, HxD to modify movie file's profile.
You can get it form here : http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD
1. Open the h264 file on HxD
2. Press Ctrl + F and search for 'avcc'
3. You will see like this.
4. You can find '64 00 1F' near from digits of 'avcc'.
※ 42 E0 – for Baseline Profile
4D 40 – for Main Profile
58 A0 – for Extended Profile
64 00 - for High Profile
1F (31 in dec) is level 3.1
29 (41 in dec) is level 4.1
33 (51 in dec) is level 5.1
So the '64 00 1F' means 'High profile 3.1'
5. Change the '64 00' to '42 E0'
6. Save the file. (HxD automaticaly creates backup file. So you have to disable it in setting if you don't want.)
So you can test this method for your own movie file.
But I hope someone make some edit on android source for this so everyone can enjoy it.
You are awesome!
Interesting.. Dice is the only player that plays it in hw mode. Doesn't play at all in android player for me.
Still hw accelerated playback for mp4 if cool.

I realise that you must be spending a lot of time 'finding' things when you make these mods.
Do you use 'Examdiff Pro?' It's an awesome tool that compares two files and highlights all the edited files. Clicking on the edited files will open the .txt/.xml/etc and all changes will be highlighted either side.
There's a 30 day trial, but it's absolutely awesome IMO.
It's worth at least a look.
@Notorious: there're a log of diff tools out there, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_comparison_tools
Is ExamDiff Pro the best you can find to compare binary files?

nice findings! I've tried it and able to play hd videos on my atrix..
p/s: can't we just do modification like this to the code?
Code:
static const char *AVCProfileToString(uint8_t profile) {
switch (profile) {
case kAVCProfileBaseline:
return "Baseline";
case kAVCProfileMain:
return "Baseline";
case kAVCProfileExtended:
return "Baseline";
case kAVCProfileHigh:

case kAVCProfileHigh10:

case kAVCProfileHigh422:
return "Baseline";
case kAVCProfileHigh444:
return "Baseline";
case kAVCProfileCAVLC444Intra:

default: return "Unknown";
}
}
I'm not a programmer, but there is a camera.apk mod out there for the optimus 2x, maybe this is a place to start/port for atrix?

I can playback 720p and 1080p .mp4s on my Motorola Atrix 4G without the slightest problem at all. If you interested in exactly how to do this I can show you how. The only problem is on cm7 roms u can't send 1080p to a tv via hdmi yet. If your running a blur rom with the 1080p hdmi landscape mod you could watch intensely unbelievably high quality 1080p bluray quality .mp4 files from your phone. It can handle like 20Mbps or more I think. The only limitation is the FAT32 Filesystem limit. So your movies will be limited to 4GB however they look f*ing insane anyway and your playing them back on your phone! I love blowing away my friends with my phone. The motorola atrix is an F*ing POWERHOUSE!
Later
*BY THE WAY* If your interested I can upload a short clip of 1080p that can be played back beautifully in HW using MX Video Player. Please let me know how blur rom's work via hdmi to TV with the 1080p landscape mod! That would blow my damn mind if I could use my phone as a BluRay player. It sucks CM7 is limited to portrait 960x540 over hdmi. Also the FAT32 limit isn't so bad because if u have a 32GB Class 10 SD Card like me, you can put a couple stunning full length 1080p blurays at 4GB a piece. The main limit is in the bitrate because of the 4GB limit. If a 64GB class 10 comes out I'd jump on it. Also when are we going to upgrade to "Today's standards" as NTFS format on Android. Is it a linux limitation for FAT32 or something?

Would you tell me how can we play HD files on Atrix?
It would be so great to do like that without reencode.
It is the final goal of this thread.
Sure. Yes. No need to do any development. The atrix is fully capaple of decoding some jaw dropping stunning and unbelievable 1080p BluRay quality movies without any problem at all. It can also carry over DTS 5.1 to your receiver if you want. Ok so the key to decoding 1080p on the attrix lies within Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate (I'm using Version 6.0). I can tell you exactly what profile and settings to use. What I want to do is upload a clip of 1080p footage so u guy's can have your minds blown by it. It can be decoded with MX Video Player without a problem @ 1920x1080 @ 20Megabits or more. However the FAT32 filesystem 4GB limit limits a typical full length BluRay to 3Mbps. Which honestly look f*ing insane still! I'm trying to find a way to upload a file on here. What's the file size limit? Like 10MB max or something?

Yes, i do encode and decode movies. SO AFAIK, tegra 2 cannot decode h264 codec.
Tegra 2 can decode 1080p coded in low profile. Medium and commonly used high profile are not supported. You can google what choices you can set up to have low profile video. Very good SW for recoding videos is handbrake. I wish you good luck with searching best encode configuration.
i downloaded the iron man 2 trailer 1080p hd video here's the LINK
i'm using mx player, temasek final build rom and stefan final symbiosis kernel
the video is sluggish to play and the sound is not matching when stark open his mouth for now i didn't using ICS rom or cm10
i also try to play the video in different decoder included on the mx player but it doesn't work
You can run 720p or 1080p fluid.. spawndk from the eepad transformer forum:
"The Tegra2 chipset are designed as a mobile sollution chipset - to support web 2 standards. The highest encoding profile used here (Youtube 1080p) are 1080p baseline and this the Tegra2 chipset will both record and play with no troubles. As well as 720p baseline and main profile - but only upto L3.1 with some limitations. It doesnt matter which container is used (mkv, mp4, m4v, avi etc) and it doesnt matter if resolution are 1080p - its only a matter of the encoding profile used to encode the supported video format H264
Tegra2 will NEVER be able to decode High profile L4.1 encodes - it's not a software issue, neither in terms of Honeycomb or Nvidia libs, its simply a limitation of the abilities of the hardwaredecoder in the Tegra2 chipset and this will never change. It is also not a limitation in the Transformer specifically, but a limitation in ALL Tegra2 based tablets and mobilephones.
This is the same reason why some mediaplayers like the Boxee Box that was originally intended to use the Tegra2 moved on to an Intel chipset before launch.
In short the Tegra2 chipset will support playback of videos encoded in 1080p or 720p resolution, using the H264 video codec and AAC audio codec - as long as the video are encoded after the baseline profile standard
It will not now or ever - play 1080p/720p encodes encoded after the high profile standard."
So basically, you have to reencode videos just like on ipad..
you should reencode to low profile, high profile is for blu-ray device or PC. don't know maybe exynos 5 can play high profile [email protected] with handheld.
Thread moved. Please post all question threads here in Q&A in future where they belong.
Thanks

I have galaxy S3 and it can only handle 10-bit video @ 480p
However, 720p 10-bit videos runs slow and laggy.
I wonder if Xperia Z can handle it without any slowdowns. Can some here test it ?

I should be able to answer your question in one hour. Stay tuned!
EDIT:
Unfortunately, when I tried to playback 720p 10bit video standard video player refused to play it and mxplayer opened it in software mode, refusing to use the H/W and H/W+ modes. In software mode I'd say it is watchable but is not perfectly smooth.
played a 10bit mkv through standard player, no lagg, smooth, while this was lagging using stock rom.. im now on tuddzrom , not sure if that fixed it lol but smooth nonetheless
Ok thanks guys
Galaxy S4 is supposed to have faster CPU than Xperia Z , so hope it will play it 10-bit 720p video smoothly.
5.1 channel mkv?
Guys,
On my Note II i can play 1080p mkv no problem, but the DDS (dolby digital 5.1) audio will not play.
I am switching to Z on Monday and am wondering if the 5.1 audio plays on mkv formats as well. Could u check that?
THanks!
1080p FLAC works flawless depending on the bitrate
720p no problems at all
Problem comes with 10bit. I think we all know that we want to watch our anime along the way. Most episodes are Hi10p.
I am not sure but how different is the Nexus 7 CPU against the Xperia Z? I can use the HW and HW+ decoder for 10bit episodes and they run smooth. But somehow the XZ refuses to use the HW/HW+ decoder. Might be, cause it's still new? No real HW support from MXPlayer yet?
I have no idea tbh.
Use MX Player's latest Test Build from here : https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build
It's a huge improvement.
Now my XZ (on 4.2.2 official ROM) can play 720p 10 bit anime very well

I just tested some Blu-Ray/Hi10p/FLAC files, only 720p were playing fine. 1080p is still no go, but I guess that's fine

I guess 10 bit 1080p is asking too much
If we talk about Xperia Z hardware capabilities to decode 10-bit encoded video, the answer is no, it will never allow it. Currently there isn't any smartphone being able to decode 10-bit enconding.
On the other side, software decoding is based on how well the algorithm is developed rather than the device itself. It's pure CPU processing power + how optimized in the algorithm so that might change with time. And from what I've seen reading this post MX video player is working on it.

I don't care if it's only software decoding. Even on PC, 10 bit video can't be played with hardware acceleration, right? (CMIIW) ^_^

Is HTC one powerful enough to handle 10-bit 720p video smoothly ? Can someone test it ?
Note: The default media player probably won't play 10-bit videos. So, download MX Player from google play, and make sure you use S/W (software mode) for playing 10-bit video.
Also, you can easily find countless of 720p 10-bit animes if you use google. So, please someone test it for me.
Anyone ?
I doubt many of us are familiar with 10 bit video. Try asking the int'l One forum, they already have the phone available.

Okay, I take it back. There are still some frame drops, mainly when panning, but in general it's pretty good.
Heard it is compatible with this device. How does it work and where can we see samples of it, working on the TF701T?

Well I'm not sure. I don't know exactly how 4K works on here. Are you saying we can only access 4K via hdmi? It doesn't work on the device itself.

The product page on Asus says it's capable of 4K on the display with movie playback but CNET says it's only possible on the HDMI ouput to a 4k capable display. Only way is to view a 4K res vid... Would be a good time to test out the GoPro Hero3 Black 4K recording XD
I'm getting the tab as soon as best buy has it available in stores. Will test it out if no one gives feedback by then...

4K support
I can confirm the video logic does have 4K decoding support. Or at least it's the first SOC that is able to decode 5Mpix h264 streams from my IP cameras. The tegra3 and snapdragon600 fail horribly. It looks brilliant on the screen, no clue about HDMI.
How did you view the 4K? I want to test it myself. Thanks!

I do not understand your question. My post says literately what I did to test it. If you also have a video source (such as my IP Camera) above 1080p you can test it yourself.

Just look around for 4K material, youtube has a lot of it (but I do not know if the Android player supports it) but you should also be able to find some sample files you can download.
A good test would be: Sintel which was rendered native in 4K. Should be awesome, you can find a torrent with the 5GB here. Some other stuff you can find over here which they used to evaluate the Nexus 10 it seems.Downloads for that are here.
Last but not least, here you can also download some stuff. Now go forth and use the power of google to find more material! It's not that hard. Analyze the results and report back your findings!
update--
I tested some of the movies listed above and they played back just fine. 4K Samples did and the TimeScape 2560x1440 preview also played back without a problem. Very nice quality! So yes, the Tegra4 can play 4K HD, I cannot test the HDMI port since I have no 4K display. But on the very high native resolution of the tablet it already looks very nice.

Ok, the torrent finished so I tried the Sintel movie. It's a full 4K movie and I tried playing it back with XBMC for Android which worked fine untill I tried to skip a part. But if you don't skip it plays perfectly. Using MX player it played fine and I was able to skip without problems.
So that confirms that this tablet (and the Tegra4) is fully 4K capable in hardware decoding h264. I saw bitrates up to 80Mbit without problem or skips.
Only thing this Tegra4 doesn't seem to handle is 1080p Hi10 anime rips because it cannot decode them by hardware. But since no other chip in the world can do this either, I guess I can hardle fault it at doing so. Software wise I think 720p Hi10 works, but 1080p Hi10 will skip frames.
When the Tegra4 comes out in 'HDMI stick' form it will make the ultimate media player combined with XBMC for Android! XBMC runs quite well on it, fast menu' s and everything.
Does TF701 capable of displaying high (4K) resolution photos and video on the screen?
Does TF701 capable of displaying high (4K) resolution photos and video on the screen? I understand that it can output 4K material to an external 4K display but how about display 4K material on its own screen? Just to make sure. Tx

Hey thanks,
I am trying to decide on Asus 701 and Samsung 10.1 2014 Edition and both have 2500x1600 resolution.
So, if the 4K content can be display on the Asus 701 with even this 2500x1600, then the picture quality will still be sharper than the 1920x1200 resolution, right?
But Asus can also use the microHDMI cable to export video or photo with 4K resolution to a larger external display device and that is good.
Frankly I have the 700 and I use the keyboard a lot and can be use for almost all of my needs during any trip. The spare extra battery pack, the full USB and the full size SD card slot is a plus for the keyboard dock and most people did not take these into account. Yes, I like the S Pen and I used it only once a while for screen cropping to be sent via email. That is good. Can you do that with the Asus 700 or 701?
BTW, a bit studder is fine for browsing for me.
Any suggestions or inputs.
Tx again.
Michael
Mine won't play 4k videos at all. It basically shuts the browser down. I've also just tried playing dead trigger 2 and had major frame drop and freezes.
Think I'm going to return mine to best buy and wait for something much better to come along.
My son is playing dead trigger 2 on his iPad air right now and it plays amazingly on it. I can't stand apple products. May have to try the fire 8.9hdx.

Hi,
I am not sure this is the way to reply and I just follow the prompts.
Can you be more detail "won't play 4K video at all"? Have you try to play 4k video from Youtube - the demo or test videos?
I also do not like Apple product for many reasons but their iPad is a great product with 4:3 ratio. Just need a replacement for my laptop like the Asus tf701. I have the tf700 now with key board dock which I used all the time to type and to replay my laptop. Just want the best display 2500x1600 for HD movies or higher. I can also see my photos better with higher resolution.
Torn between the new Samsung 10.1 and Asus 701. Prefer to have extra battery life of 4 added hours from the keyboard dock, full size USB for any hardware like mouse, backup USB Drive, etc; full size SD card slot (for micro SD card adaptor as well) and I can use the keyboard to hold up the tablet so it is like a stand as well.
The tradeoff is the S-Pen which could be used more often as I learn how to. The 4K HDMI output from the micro HDMI out port is a plus to connect my photo editing and video watching on a larger TV or in a hotel. Try to do than on iPad without memory card slot, HDMI out, etc.
Any suggestions or input that I should consider??

I got my tf701t today and I can confirm that it plays 4K (3840 X 2160) videos with the normal android player fluidly. I played a couple of 4K video demos from youtube including Sony, Samsung, LG and videos from personal users. The details are excellent and definitely sharper than FHD (1920 x 1080) videos.
