T-Mobile $30 Prepaid Plan Users Thread - Nexus 4 General

This thread is for all users who have went with using T-mobiles Unlimited $30 plan with 100 minutes of talk time and 5G of monthly 4G usage.
First question: what VOIP programs you use to make and receive calls? What is the best combination free/paid apps?

I've been using this plan on my Galaxy S3 and will be using it on my Nexus 4 if it ever shows up. Great plan!

Groove ip works great when I'm home, but I'm still on my s3. I also played with spare phone voip and it seemed to work pretty well.

can you go into a tmobile store and get the micro sim for free if you're a current tmobile user? i ordered the micro sim online but dont think it's coming tomorrow when my n4 arrives

Vonage for VOIP
I downloaded the Vonage app, ** You do not need to sign up for vonage to use it ***
And I can make free calls to any number in the US for free.... It uses your current T-Mobile number for calls.
The quality of the call is amazing and it works remarkably well.

I use GrooveIP when I'm home on wifi. I tried it a few times on 3g/hspa+ and it didn't fare too well. I'll try it again with the Nexus 4's improved download speeds and see if it makes a difference.

I'm about to find the answer to that myself tomorrow. My N4 is arriving tomorrow too. I'll probably hit all the local stores and ask for a new sim for my new phone.
Back to the topic, I've been thinking of converting to the $30 plan too. How are the chances of also transferring over my current T-Mobile number over to the $30 plan? It's of great value to me to keep my old number.

I know there's an eligibility checker for phone numbers on the T-Mobile site because I saw it when I was activating this new plan for my N4.

This app is way better than grooveip. Only tried on wifi so far and it's as clear as mobile network, plus it uses your number. And the best part...It's free!

Yes, when you set it up, you enter your number and it sends you a text to verify that its your number. Then when you call someone it shows up as your mobile number on their caller id.

and this doesn't use up the allotted 100 minutes of the plan? i've been reading conflicting posts on whether or not these services use minutes.

I currently have $60 everything unlimited pre-paid with 2GB of data at HSPA+ speeds. While I can afford it, paying $30 a month would be even better. But is this plan for people that hardly ever talk on a phone or there is a way to get free incoming/outgoing calls ?

I use Google Talk with tapatalk, but as of now I have the 50$ plan with unlimited talk from my one s until I can get the 30$ kit, they wouldn't let me migrate from the unlimited down to the 30$ said I had to go to Walmart and do it or order online. Sux when you know a csr has the power to do something for you but won't. Wish I was a hot girl sometimes.

No they don't use minutes, it uses data. Vonage only works for outgoing as far as I know and grooveip works for both. You have to set up groove with your google voice number and change a certain setting (can't remember which) or it will use minutes. When someone calls your google voice number it forwards to your phone.
I would recommend using vonage and calling people right back when they call because it's alot better quality.

Just get a new sim and activate it, then trasfer your number to the new account. I've heard people say they were able to transfer the funds too.
There is a great thread at SD that you can learn everything there is to know about this plan.

If you use your phone number to call out with vonage, I'm pretty sure it is going to use up your minutes. Similar to how dialing in/out works with Google Voice:
If you choose for your caller ID to be from your Google Voice number, then it uses minutes like you are talking to your Google Voice number, and
If you choose for your caller ID to be from your real phone number, then it uses minutes like you were calling them directly (because Google simply transfers the call when the person is reached).
This is widely known due to the fact that people used to put their Google Voice number as one of their family members so they could get unlimited calls to that number.
So, I personally would not trust the previous poster without checking myself first. no offense
Programs like GrooveIP skip your phone number entirely and route you directly to your Google Voice number so as not to use minutes.

Currently have a 2 year contract and the $30 monthly 4G plan, was told that you dont always get the same coverage on prepaid than you do postpaid so I am currently testing it out. But I have not seen a difference yet. just have to wait for my Nexus 4 to come in and then cancel my postpaid plan.
I was able to get a free micro-sim from the tmobile store when I went. simply said when your phone arrives we can transfer everything over and if you decide you want to stick with the pre-paid we can switch your post-paid number over as well.

Yes, if you use Vonage it does not use your minutes, same as GrooveIP, but....
I believe if you use Vonage with the phone number on your plan, then it will eat up your minutes.
I have yet to see any program that uses the phone number on your plan, without also using your minutes (T-mobile wifi calling uses your T-mobile phone number, and it also uses your minutes).
Correct me if I am wrong.

Vonage app doesn't use your minutes
Thank you guys for the Vonage app tip. Never came across it before. User interface is very usable and performance is great.
I still don't have the N4, only a few hours more , but I've had the $30 tmobile plan (100min + 5GB data) for a about a year now. I was forced to get a new number, couldn't transfer my old tmobile prepaid number.
Vonage app doesn't use your minutes. I installed it and allowed it to use my tmobile number (it auto detected it and sent an activation code over sms). I then made 2 calls one on wifi and another on 4G (currently have the galaxy exhibit 4G supports HSPA+ 14) quality was pretty good on both, considering grooveIP is unusable on it because of the weak processor, although Skype and G-Talk work fine. I had the same number of minutes remaining after the 2 calls as before. No minutes used.
The $30 plan works well for me because I use a little over 2GB of data a month, and rarely exceed the 100 minutes. And when I do it's only 10cents a minute. And no extra fees and taxes. Plus I pick up recharge cards online regularly at 5% off and no sales tax. It's a win win win situation

Euro N1 on ATT in USA

Hi,
I am currently residing in India, using the Euro frequency (i.e. T-mobile) N1. My N1 was bought from Europe.
I will soon be moving to USA for studying. The problem is, most people, including students, in and around my area use ATnT. So I will be forced to use ATnT, not T-Mobile. I do not intend to buy a new phone, I would really like to keep using this same phone in the US. I had a few questions regarding this:
1. Will my phone work? I am not interested in 3G on the phone, I will have wifi. But I heard that ATnT issues new sim card which work on 3G frequencies only. Is that true? Will I at least have EDGE on my phone?
2. My cousin there can get me into her family plan. However, ATnT says that if they detect a smartphoe, they will add data plan without asking, for ALL the people in the family plan. Now my phone is bought from Europe, so will ATnT be able to detect it as a smartphone? Would they forcibly activate data even if my phone frequencies are not compatible?
3. Supposing they can detect it, and hence I can't get into the family plan. What other option do I have? Should I go for ATnT prepaid? But prepaid is VERY costly, and I would like to try and avoid it.
4. I will not have any credit history, at least initially. How do I go about buying an ATnT connection then?
5. Will I be able to use Google Voice on the phone, if I don't have a data plan or continuous internet on the phone? Can other people having ATnT call Google Voice numbers for free, or is the airtime charged?
6. What would my WORST case scenario be? Get another phone under contract from ATnT and keep my N1 as a paperweight? (I would really like to avoid this)
That's a lot of questions, and diverging quite a bit from my topic. However, I would appreciate any help, since I will be going to a new country. If any of these questions are n00b type, I would request pointers to a place where I can research on it
Thanks.

You will still be able to add the phone to the family line. When they add a line they ask for your imei and they will know that it is a smart phone then att will add data to just that phone line. Att will not force 3g I think they can't cover enough places with it so don't worry about that. I would look on Craig's list to are if anyone wants to trade.

Thank you, miketlo. My cousin was told by ATnT that they will add data to all the 3 lines in the family. I will confirm again. But in any case my phone should work on EDGE right? Even if I have their new "orange" sim card?
Trading is a nice idea, I'll look into it after I get in the US. But I would like to avoid it, since it will cause me problems when I return to India (though most Indian providers work on both Tmo and ATT phones).

Your phone will work just fine for phone calls and only EDGE speeds for cell data.

False. Data plan will be added to your line only. IMEI is sent to the provider and they can what type of phone it is. You can TRY to have them BLOCK all internet data from your line, but it's something they don't like to do (since they like having you PAY them).

If you want to get sms or voicemail (from the app), or MAKE calls AS your Google Voice number, you will need Data OR WIFI. You can get your voicemail by calling your GV number, and you can receive GV calls if someone calls your GV number, you can also make GV calls if you call your own number and go through the prompts (takes a while).

Just so you know, if you were to trade for the ATT 3g version of the nexus, It will also work just fine in India, 3g and all.
Are you sure which version you currently have? Yes your nexus will work just fine on ATT using edge.
Or another Idea is to get away from that by stating that you need a sim card for now and that you will find a phone on your own. You don't have to tell them about your phone nor give your IMEI to them as well. Once you get your sim go online and add the 15 dollar unlimited non-smartphone data plan or if you are tagging on someone's family plan and they have an unlimited family msging plan then go add the 10 dollar non-smartphone data plan. I've been doing this for over 8 months and I am sure ill be caught some day...lolz
P.S if you provide your own equipment you do not need to sign a contract to get service, you'll just go month to month. Unfortunately, you'll still have to pay an activation fee.
Thanks a lot everyone, this certainly helps me

Is it possible for my cousin to get a SIM card only for me, or do I need to buy it myself? Won't they be able to detect my phone as a "smartphone" once I put my SIM card in? Is it possible to avoid adding any data plan altogether? Also your note under 'P.S' applies in case of family plan, or in case I decide to take an account myself?
I think my best option would be to go for something like FlexPay which T-mobile has. Is there something similar in ATnT?

dell streak 7 with prepaid plan question.

Ok so tmobile has a nice.plan with 5gb, 100 mins and unlimited texting for $30.00. My question is would this plan work on my streak 7. Don't care about the calling or texting just the data plan. I have simple mobile with the $40 plan and ddata does work so I figure the tmobile one should work as well. Hve u guys tried this?
Its not a phone, so your minutes and texting won't work, and I am doubtful the data would work as well.
You wont be able to use cell phone plan and insert the sim card with the Dell streak 7.
You will need a tablet data plan In order for it to work.
And with prepaid tablet data plan you wont get unlimited texting.
with postpaid tablet data plan you can add unlimited texting.
I have simple mobile nd my voice plan with data works on the tablet. Just data. no texting no calling. I don't have a tmobile sim card with me to try it out.
I want that 30 plan bcuz it has 5gbs.of data. I dont ccare about the calling or texting but the 5gb. I rather pay 30 than like 50 for just 2 or 3gb
Depends on their policy more then anything else. Texting requires a phone number(?) but tablets dont get numbers since they cant call, otherwise it's just (a special type of) data.
Carriers like to charge different amounts for different device classes, so it might not apply to a tablet or something.
I have a data only plan from t-mobile and they do give the tablet a phone number. Seems odd to me but they do.

They give it a phone number so that they can SMS you messages when you get near your limit, or near the end of your 30 days. Their system was built around doing SMS for activations as well. They could rearchitect to use email, but since phone companies have numbers "lying around", it's just as easy to give you the number.
As for the 5 Gig/$30 option, I wish they would do that for us, but they have told myself and others on multiple occasions that this is a WalMart special - which suggests that WalMart may be subsidizing some or all of these plans. $50/3 Gigs isn't horrible - particularly considering the equivalent plans (and costs) at Verizon and AT&T.
My .02 worth of course.
I got the plan in an effort to keep my # at a lower cost... Only texting works... The 3g & 4g show but wont go out... Update: wont get SMS messages either..! Now this really sucks...
I have the tmobile branded dell streak... Tried to upgrade it to hc3.2 but some match error came up...
Anyway wifi everything works fine...
I called tmo they told me I need a broadband plan... =/ And that it only works on walmart purchased phones... Considering that its mostly a data and text plan you would think more would fly... It has 100 voice min so whatever there...
Anyone know of a loophole..?
I read somewhere that only walmart sold phones can be used as so; and if you update your streak7 the wrong file it could change ones imei # so becareful there but some pm me if they know where im going with this...
SMS started working all of a sudden...

TMobile $30 5GB plan DOES NOT WORK on Nexus 7 GSM!

Got my SIM card yesterday from T-Mobile.com
Got my Nexus 7 GSM today.
Cut up my full sized sim to fix into micro sim slot. Worked fine.
Inserted SIM into tablet. Got signal. So far so good.
Nexus 7 doesn't have Phone.apk or MMS.apk on launcher.
Fired up Wi-Fi, went to go Play Store.
Installed Go SMS Pro.
Set up my sim card online. Activated with $30 100 minutes, UL txt, 5GB plan.
Had to retry "nearest city" options and zip codes, but eventually got it to work.
Got my SMS notification on my tablet saying account is good.
Refilled for a month.
Got my SMS notification of the refill.
Setup a T-Mobile account with my prepaid number. All good.
0KB used.
Reboot tablet. I get "Sign into network" which is a html redirect page.
Every page redirects to sign in page. Can never sign in.
Research online.
Turns out it's detected as a tablet. IMEIs are apparently flagged by T-Mobile.
BAH!
I'll root and mess around my /efs/nv_data.bin and reboot back, but so far :-/
Edit: No /efs folder

That really sucks.
While I'm probably going to go with the $15 AT&T plan, the $30 TMO plan you referenced sounds like a perfect one for people who want a lot of data, SMS capabilities and some minutes for light talk usage. I was hoping it would work. Have you tried talking to T-Mobile about it?
Thanks for sharing. Hopefully there is a solution.

I have the $15 AT&T plan (actually $10 unlimited) that I'm using for my Galaxy Note 10.1. I would try swapping around but the sim sizes are different. I'm pretty sure that TMobile will say that the Nexus 7 is a data-only device and won't let me do it.
Google has stripped WiFi tethering, MMS and Phone from the device and I'm sure it's no coincidence.

"Stripped" might be too strong a word.
The non-3G versions never had any of those functions. I think it's more likely that they simply chose not (or forgot) to include them in the 3G version.
SMS actually does work, but inbound only (according to rumors) by default. But you can apparently use an SMS app to do outbound fine. There is another thread discussing the phone mod. Apparently a framework change can enable it, but no one has been able to test whether it works or not yet to place calls.
I imagine it would be trivial for a developer to add tethering support, though I don't see the need personally. Most people only care about tethering a non-3G tablet to a phone, not the other way around.
What $10 AT&T plan? Is that the "share your data" plan or an independent pre-paid one?
I don't need a lot of data, but I want to be able to have some if necessary. I also don't want to pay too much for it. $15 seems reasonable, but $10 is better - assuming I don't already need to have a phone with them.
Did you register your sim to N7 IMEI or normal phone IMEI? Wonder if that makes a difference.
Did you ensure the APN was what phones use for data rather than tablets/modems? Tweakker on the market will set it for you if you are unsure.

I did all 1s a couple of times but I when I successfully activated I used the N7 IMEI and changed the "nearest city" option. I strongly doubt that was the issue since other people who have this problem with the TMobile branded Springboard say the SIM works on other devices. I can't test this since I have no other device (tablet or smartphone) that takes microSIM.

I checked them all manually. They were a little different than standard APNs (had a masked password and server field), but I modified them. I was still redirected. I'm pretty sure it's IMEI detection. I'll try it anyway. Edit: Tweaker is not supported on Play Store. I'll have to search for the APK

When I try to install Tweakker from the store, Google Play reports that it is not compatible with my N7. (I did upgrade it to 4.2.)

On any AT&T family plan with shared unlimited messaging, you can add unlimited data for $10 on dumbphones. If you don't have shared unlimited texting then it's $15/mo per dumbphone
Also, TMobile will let you use your voice plan package if you accept to pay an additional $15/mo to use "Mobile Broadband" which is using it on data-only devices (laptops/tablets)

I'm confused. You put your SIM card into the device after cutting it down and once you booted it up, you had signal? You saw the H and everything? But you could not access tmo's data network immediately? But then you logged into the play store with wifi?

That's correct. I've already been shuttling a cut-down T-Mobile SIM between devices. When I have the SIM in the Nexus 7, I get a 3G or an H, but then when I try to make any web requests, I get redirected to My T-Mobile. (In addition, Android prompts me with a "Sign into network" item in the notification area.) I can log back into My T-Mobile with any browser, but that doesn't accomplish anything.
I then connect to the Play Store over WiFi but it won't let me download Tweakker.

Had you activated that sim card before on another phone? I am curious if you can activate it first one a phone, say a One S because it uses the micro sim, maybe thats all it needs? Hmm...

Yes. I've been using the SIM with an adapter in a Galaxy Nexus and an unlocked iPhone 4S just fine, and I have it happily getting data in my Galaxy Nexus as we speak.

Thanks guys for letting us know that Tmobile has blocked this. I kind of expect this since they have been cracking down...on the switching SIMS between different devices types.
Specially with them in touch with google on Nexus 4 and also were preparing to partner with Google to sell the Nexus 7 3G with a Tmobile SIM (like Google is doing with ATT) according to some leaked Tmo news pictures..., We should have expected this already.
It was a few months back they blocked the opposite: using data broadband plans SIM in unlocked phones like Nexus. We used to be able to do that.
Still it's unfortunate. Thanks for saving me to try the same and be stucked with a SIM i can not use effectively. To the OP; you can still use the micro SIM in a regular device without an adapter. You just need to position it right and may be try a couple times. I did not this until I saw somebody do it. Since then if I have cut a sim, I can still use it without an adapter. Just make sure you position it right....by try and error...or by inserting a regular SIM and picking up where the metal needs to touch the phone.
For all if you really want Tmobile...you can use the Special Walmart plan...which gives 60 days if you buy the $35 or $50 plans. To a point it may be equal or better deal than the 5gig $30.....depends if you do not use too much data...you can use: $35 for 3.5 gig for 60 days....or $50 5 gig for 60 days.
That's the way I may go or I may go the way of Ultra Mobile MVNO which is coming up with pay as you go @ 4.9 cents per mb in January. This is expensive but it's 4g hspa+ pay as you go to use only while needing fast data in areas where no wifi is there or my freedom hotspot has reach is fast 500 mb limit or no Clear coverage is being picked up.
We should also try to see if Tmobile is doing the same blocking while using MVNO....plans. If that's the case then the above Ultra plan won't help. In order to get better data deals we would need Voice/data plans from mvno..But that in itself is not useful unless we're able to enable both voice...and data on 3g nexus. Ultra has plans with data or voice only while data costing 2 cents per mb. Or Straightalk/Net10 $45 plans if only the voice can also be enabled.
MVNO do not usually have good deals on data only plans.
On the other side ATT broadband plans are interesting for 3gb for $30. Not quite 5 gig but better coverage.

Can you share some more info on this plan?
I just signed up for the AT&T $15 30day/250MB plan. But this sounds a lot better!
I'm generally around Wi-Fi, so don't need a ton of data. But I'd rather pay (effectively) $15/month for 2-2.5GB then 250MB.

well......doing some reading I got this from Walmart....Not good news. Now I understand why when I switched my SIM from a USB stick device bought at Walmart to a USB stick sent by Tmobile it kept blocking me and redirecting me as with the OP.... It took multiple support calls to Tmobile tech reps...to no avail. Until the recreated my account with free data posted to it and with the regular 30 days limit. They told me I could switch back to the Walmart special at the end of the month...but never was able to get it done....I ended up selling the USB stick....so it seems there's IMEI checking on SIM activated with the 60 days specials....so this won't help on Nexus 3G
Access 4G Internet on the go with the T-Mobile $35 Prepaid Mobile Broadband Pass. It offers 3.5GB of data usage and is good for 60 days only at Walmart. Pass is only eligible on broadband devices purchased at a Walmart after 6/1/2012. The pass includes no activation fee, no annual contract, no credit check and no overages. And it works with any new T-Mobile Laptop Stick or mobile hotspot purchased at Walmart. If you regularly surf the web, check email and update your social network, this card is a good choice.

No activation fee, annual contract, credit check or overages
Works with any T-Mobile Internet device
*60 day pass is only eligible on broadband devices purchased at Walmart after 6/1/2012

Ironically, as soon as I posted this, I got the shipping notification at 3 AM CST. But Im still sad about the tmo thing not working
I had hoped that I could use my 3g Nexus 7 on the $30 tmobile plan. I was thinking of registering on the plan when I traveled. I guess the only hope is that someone figures out a work around or tmobile offers a decent data plan. At least, I was primarily planning to use 3g overseas.
It looks like I will be teathering my N7 for for data when away from wifi. This is a pain. In addition, I could have waited and ordered my 3g N7 from B&H Photo and avoided shipping and tax.

[Q] Tmobiles WiFi Calling - Uses Mins Yes Or No?

So I understood that when you are using Tmos WiFi calling feature, it still counts against your minutes. However, when I went into a T-Mobile store yesterday, a rep told me if you go into settings and turn off your cell radio, the call wont count against your minutes.
I'm not sure if I believe her so I thought I'd ask here. She claims to have worked for Tmo for 10 years but I still don't trust that info. I'm on the $30/mo 100 min prepay plan so I need to be sure.
Btw, I just signed up today, and my little Wifi calling icon is red and there is an error that reads, "Error ER06 SIM not ready". Yet I can make calls over the cell network, so the SIM must be ready, no? (I did cut a standard SIM to Micro, but if I screwed it up, I shouldn't be able to make normal calls).
T Mobile isn't dumb of course it counts towards your minutes

Not true, wifi calls do count against your minutes. Tmobile has wife calling to cover those with a weak signal.

Hmm maybe i remember wrong then.
Postpaid, it may or may not count towards your minutes. If you have to ask, it probably does. There was a plan add-on in the past that allowed for wifi not to deduct from your minutes. If you have a plan that is new, you probably aren't eligible for this add-on either way.
I was attempting to get this plan last year, but I totally forgot about keeping up with the request, haha.

Cool! Anybodys wife or do they choose one for you?
Anyway, I figured it would count, since the call eventually goes out over their network. So more testing with GrooveIP!
Not, anyone want to tackle that error message I got? You think it has to do with my modified sim or does Tmo need to do something?
WiFi calling will use your minutes unless you have the "Free WiFi calling" package added to your plan. It is free to add so why not do it. Just takes a quick call to a T-Mobile rep.

WiFi calling DOES NOT use minutes if the free feature is applied to the account. Have them put it on or do it yourself on mytmobile.com
Prepaid it WILL use your minutes no matter what.

I much prefer using wifi calling on my Google Voice + FreePBX +CSipSimple. $30 per month for 100 cell minutes but unlimited wifi + 4g calls is by far the best option for this prepaid plan since tmobile's wifi costs minutes.
Well, nice feature but I'll never use it.
i think it depends.. since now they have unlimited minutes the wifi calling thing becomes a moot point. lols i've turned off the wifi calling all together since work wifi is pretty slow and call quality when that happens is very shotty.

I'd like to know more about those two apps. However, I don't know about using GV for calls. I used to use it a lot n my computer or with my Obi, but everyone always complained about hearing touch tone noises during the call. Google has never fixed that!

Did not realize this was a free feature! A more recent change?
Saw that my account already had the free wifi added on. Logged onto the account and added it to my father's LG G2x.
Thanked your post!
Unlimited minutes for what price? I pay $0 for unlimited calling in the United States and Canada. The only reason I pay $30 per month is to be able to make calls when I'm out and about using my carrier T-Mobile. If you're paying more than $30 per month for unlimited and your United States or Canada I think that's ridiculous.
Think about it: in 2013 we have Skype, mumble, teamspeak, Ventrilo, Jitsi, and all these ways to speak with people completely free internationally. I don't feel it's worth paying a lot of money per month just to call people locally.

[Q] Can I port my number to T-Mobile from Cricket using the $30 Walmart Walmart plan?

Currently on the $60 Cricket Pro Plan with 10GB of data unlimited text and unlimited calling. I dont need unlikited calling and 5gb will be kore than enough. I want to keep my number from cricket, i will be a new tmobile subscriber so i know i qualify for the 30 walmart plan.
Why not just ask TMobile? Seems they would be the logical people to ask, rather than random people who aren't likely to be current on TMO's porting policy.

When you get the $30 plan, which is by far the best plan there is for someone who doesn't talk much and the data you get for the money...inside the box is a paper with a code on it. Log into the website provided and register your device. It'll ask you if you want to port, so enter in your number. After submitting, call TM's pre paid department and you should be good to go.
The trick here is to make sure you provide TM with the right "pin code," of your old account and it'll be Smooth sailing. If you don't know what the pin code / password is just call your old provider to obtain that. Then use that pin code when activating the device.
Tip: Don't cancel your old number until you have confirmation that your port is successful, which can be tested obviously by calling your old number and having it ring on your phone with the new SIM. If you cancel too soon, you won't be able to port your number. So wait and make darn sure first. Then cancel the old line / account.
To avoid all this. ..Google voice [emoji106]
Hope this helps.
