Nexus 4's camera produces purple lens flare, too
Well, we guess nothing is perfect in this world. Not even the Google Nexus 4 by LG, although we can easily forgive its few drawbacks due to the marvelous price Google has attached to it and the tons of cool features that have made their way inside the package.
When the iPhone 5 came out, some unhappy users started complaining that in some situations, the otherwise very capable camera makes bright lights such as lamps to appear with a nasty purple lens flare effects in images. Apple has even responded to those claims, saying that... this is the camera's normal behavior.
Now that we're seeing that the same happens with the Nexus 4, we can really believe that it's a normal issue for such camera sensors. Thanks to a Google+ user who has uploaded a rather coarse Photosphere shot, we notice that Google's handset is prone to producing abundant amounts of purplish lens flare, too. Unfortunately, we doubt it that there can be any kind of normal solution for that nasty effect, plus we guess that an accessory maker won't come to the rescue this time.
But you know what the good part of all this is? That it doesn't really matter much, since phone cameras have never been that great, really. And why should you bother with such issues, when you have so many other awesome features to enjoy, such as the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the beautiful 4.7" True HD IPS Plus display, or Android 4.2!

Nope.
(you can see it on the right side of the sun)
Btw this effect is something "common" when making photo in direct light, even reflex objetice have that defect, so i don't really mind if a smartphone have some purple fringing... just don't make high contrast/direct light photos
Canon lenses have purple too. It's just a side effect of CA/flaring:
the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Lens-Flare.aspx?FLI=0&API=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0&LensComp=0&CameraComp=0&Lens=115
dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_50_1p4_c16/5 (scroll down to the flare section)
(XDA won't let me post URLs because I'm still a liability)
It's just worse on a phone because the back isn't meant to be high grade optical glass but a rather flat piece of glass.
There is thread about this already.
Please continue the discussion there.

Have any of you gone to a different model of phone then come back to the D3 and realized the screen colors on this Pentile display just suck? It really jumped out to me when using the Handcent Emoji Plugin and when viewing from an angle. Here's a side-by-side comparison with my DX. Both photos were taken with the phones at max brightness with no screen protector on either. D3 has consistent color when viewing from an angle whereas the DX doesn't, but the DX's LCD does have a hairline crack underneath and used to have a flickering dot whenever touched. It's since gone away, but the screen has been damaged from pressure.
DX on left and D3 on right.

I didn't mean to start a war here. I was just pointing out that the colors are much worse on this phone than others. I will note how nice it acts in direct sun light though!
My bottom left corner is bleeding badly. And the colors seem washed out
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
In the second picture, the one on the left seems to have weird wavy lines in the white section, and honestly, neither one of their colors look too hot at that angle anyway. Yes, the Pentile is somewhat less vibrant than a Super AMOLED screen, but it's not that big a deal to me; I'm not color-sensitive designing digital art or using Photoshop on the thing, just surfing and texting, with a little gaming. The biggest factor for me is that the Droid X doesn't have a keyboard, which means it's not even in the cards for me. A close second is that, since I live in Hawaii, good visibility in bright sunlight (all year around lol) is fairly inportant.

I have two nexus 7's, one is a replacement which i got last week and the other is from the day of release.
While both screens have the same colours and resolution you can clearly see the difference in the photo below

Different factories?

New screens are worse...the vibrance on mine is terrible; colours have no depth.
I think is the quality of the IPS display. Because some ips displays are factory calibrated differently.

Most probably a different vendor for the screen. Asus does not make everything and some of the parts are sourced from different vendors (they should all have the same specs within tolerance). We used to face this when I worked with Laptops @ Dell.
The only difference I have seen (with laptop screens) is that sometimes a part form one vendor may be more prone to faults than the other. No way of telling which though till more defects are found.
You should be fine. But interesting observation though..
i went through 3 rmas with asus and i can tell you the difference is not screen dependent, but calbration dependent...they changed my screen 3 times, only the third time color changed, and thats because they changed the board(which downgraded me to an 8gb variant-.-)
Same here. I have a C60 8gb from August and a C90 16gb bought in late October, and the screens are different. Very very clearly different.

I think I see what the plan here is.
Make Nexus7 owners believe someone else has a better screen than them, and raise the RMA level....
Sneaky Apple, very sneaky...
Yea differnent release models.. Different hardware. The new screen should have some advantage over the old one, maybe longer lasting, maybe its brighter, or maybe its just cheaper to manufacturer lol

what does Apple have to do with this??
Anyway... is there a difference in touch response? i have the C70 model and it isnt as good as my Galaxy Nexus in touch responses.
When I was purchasing a replacement screen for my laptop on ebay I could choose from different companies that all made screens for that specific laptop. ie Samsung or LG.

My co-worker (iPhone5) and I (N4) each tried to take an identical photo of some bourbon I bought the other day. The side-by-side is below. Granted, this test is close to meaningless, because he might have been shaking during his photo, but I was still pleased to see how much better the N4 output is compared to the iPhone 5 for this particular photo.

Yeah, and the 23-year is like a symphony in your mouth! Too bad the Pappy brand is so hard to come across these days
This confirms what I have seen from these two cams. The iPhone uses a lot of algorithms to make photos "pop", much like setting an SLR to output vivid jpegs. N4 seems to be less agressive with exposure and post-processing.
I can only explain the iPhone image looking fuzzier as being due to camera movement (it does have a better lens).
Yeah, it seems like the camera on the N4 is not adding any effects, allowing you to adjust it in the app itself.
I can see why Apple wants to adjust it a bit though, they are targeting people who just want to take a picture and leave it as it is. Though it might be true of Android customers too, it doesn't seem like Google has that as a priority.

Wow. The iPhone picture looks bright and washed out. The n4 looks darker yet has more detail. Also, the iPhone picture looks like you'd be drinking something watered down and the n4 pic looks like some manly stuff I'd drink even though I don't drink.

As someone who owns both phones. This is a one off situation. The iPhone 5 has a better camera.

The Nexus 5 looks big in pictures but is actually smaller than my galaxy s4 with a very thin case on the G4. And the Nexus doesn't need a case because the back is is rubbery and grippy, beautiful! Also, it feels absolutely premium in terms of build quality and materials.
The screen is brilliant, bar none the best I've ever seen. And better than my iPhone 5.
The camera shutter sound is very subtle, in fact I'll keep it on
The navigation keys are a lot closer so it's a lot easier to use one handed.
Speaker phone is awesome: loud and clear.
Needless to say the phone overall is as fast as all hell.
Nexus 5 screen is vastly easier to read in direct sunlight
Where does the Galaxy s4 beat the Nexus? So far all I've found is the speaker volume, which seems to be a little low when playing videos. That and the replaceable battery and memory card slot.
Its my first day with the Nexus 5, and so far, so good.
Just thought I'd give a little feedback for those of you who are on the fence about switching. I have both at the moment, but my S4 may soon be on Craigslist.
Hows the camera
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
I've only taken a hand full of photos, but so far the camera looks very good. Plenty of detail and great white balance.
I've been considering switching as well - but there's a few things that keep me on the fence. The S4 has AMOLED (which I prefer to IPS, but subjective) and removable battery/microsd. And the battery is larger on the S4.
But as the other user asked, how is the camera? Apparently it's not as good due to flawed software, but there IS image stabilization. Hmm...
When you put the Nexus 5 next to the galaxy s4 with both at full brightness , the Galaxy looks muted, fuzzy, dim. Take your phone to a Best Buy or Sprint store and have a look for yourself.
And here is one of my first few snapshots.

Was thinking about switching myself, but I've heard mixed things about the camera. I'd have to test it myself in person before I could make a decision
I used to get all anal about about the cameras too until I realize that all I ever use the snaps for is Facebook. I have real cameras for when I get serious.
Good to know.

Perhaps you got a lucky phone or your just so happy to get a new phone you look past the defects but according to this thread and what ive been reading over in the nexus forums i dont think theres ever been a phone thats had this many problems out the box. If i was LG i would seriously be concerned bc i think there gona be seeing thousands of units returned

I just glanced at that thread and looks for the most part like people being super anal about non issues. But hey, if you get a bad one, send it back. Right?
meh...I was really into the phone at first and was considering selling my S4, but after reading a bunch of reviews and people's opinions on it...it seems meh and I'll just stick with the S4 for now. Went to the Nexus forums and nothing but fanboys in there jumping on anybody that says anything bad about the phone and trying to defend their purchase.

Ha ha, that's the way it goes, right?
Anyway, here are a few more shots from the camera, and then I am off this topic. Good luck everyone.
And here are the few more snaps I shot with the Nexus.
The saturation is a bit over the top at default settings, but otherwise they look good to me.
I was thinking of selling my S4 for the nexus..until I seen a smaller battery. Specs mean nothing if it doesn't turn on.

Time will tell about the battery life. Some have said it's so so, and others have said it last for days between charges.
I might get the nexus. But with the wobbly buttons. Non removable battery and no Sim slot. Plus dead pixels and light leakage among other problems that's kind of scary for a phone that's just been release

I have tons of cameras depending on what I'm doing. For the sake of simplicity I will yap about my latest DSLR that I use occasionally when I don't mind lugging it around. I use a Canon 7D with several older EF lenses back from when I was shooting film. I find that smart phones take awful pictures unless the lighting and subjects are cooperating perfectly. I have some waterproof ones for snowboarding, snorkling, and swimming. I have a couple of small compact point and shoots for carrying around to take pictures when I need portability like with a smart phone but want better pictures. I have been increasingly unhappy with point and shoot cameras these days. That's about it. I could go into more detail if you have any specific questions.
