Nexus 7 native apps... How many? - Nexus 7 General

Hi, Google playstore does not separate tablet apps from phone apps. How many tablet apps are there? I am afraid of buying android tablets for fear of apps that will just be scaled versions to fit on Android tablets.
Edit. Please delete thread. Transfered question in themes and apps section.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

I would just buy an iPad, as clearly you believe everything that Apple and their media partners tell you about Android. Their fantasy stories about fragmentation are just that - fantasy.
If you are interested in the REALITY, then let me explain. Yes it's true most Android apps have a single application that supports smartphones and tablets, but there is MUCH more to the story than that. Modern Android development is done using what is known as fragments, and it allows your application to have the same business logic, but different visual layouts depending on screen size and orientation.
The upside (the one that nobody mentions), is that you buy the application once, and it works on all your Android devices....
Yes there are some apps that are just big smartphone apps, and these are the ones that Apple always roll out, but it's a misleading picture, most of the big name apps have Android tablet layouts, or in some cases dedicated apps.

The only thing that matters is the few app you might want to use.
Out of the hundreds of apps on the store most of us only use a few.Having a 1000 silly kid game apps out there does not mean anything if you never use one.I would check to see if the apps you want work good on a tablet. If they do then to heck with the whole how many apple has verses android thing.

are there any app that can play iphone apps on android phones???

Not impossible. Very hard for sure, would likely run like ****, and certainly get Apple's lawyers landing you in a world of hurt. Given the similarities in hardware (on some of the newer Android devices) you could do an emulator.
Of course the likelyhood of someone ever doing one is about 0.
I do not think that running the applications is the problem, The problem is that the iPhone runes on another OS. And that Apple probably would sue anyone who made an application that would allow you to use any of the app store programs.
i wonder if the iphone community are asking if android apps work on the iphone
mmmm NO
best thing to do is that the developer of the iphone app you want makes the app for android.
iPhone apps are .ipa's, you can download them from online and there .zips then you change them from a zip to an ipa. so if you can get all the crap from it and then make it an apk it would run like crap. lol. good idea though.

Tablet apps not showing in the tablet section

I don't understand how the company that revolutionized the internet by creating the worlds best online search engine, can not properly run and organize the search functions of an app store.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.trendstertab&feature=search_result
Trendster HD for instance which is a honeycomb specific app is not showing in the tablet section and how is there not a damn filter for results! Sometimes I feel like Google doesn't really care that much about android.
Wow here is another one

You'll notice that its called Featured Apps for Tablets. Not tablet apps. Those apps you mentioned aren't featured apps for tablets.

My point is that I think google is cherry picking the apps that show up in that section. It's not the tablet app section its the featured tablet app section so the apps must merit being featured. I do however think there should be away to search for honeycomb optimized applications in addition to this featured tablet app section.
People pay to be on the fetured app section because its more marketing for there app witch I think is stupid

Give it time... good lord. Apple had a slow start to the tablet sections too. Everyone is so damn sensitive nowadays. Give it time and the formatted apps will appear. Hell google just released that special file or whatnot that allows designers to design for all screen size/format in one apk. Dont tell me google doesnt care, its just a slow start not to mention i personally believe that motorola pushed google to release a not fully finished os to beat out the iPad2 announcement.

the op's point makes sense, he isn't complaining about the number of apps. when i hit that tablet featured tab i expect to see apps that are table optimized. there are many tablet and honeycomb optimized apps that are hard to find. if they are charging the people who pay money should just have theirs on top. Right now when you hit that button they make it seem like there are only 20 or so honeycomb apps period.

From iOS to ICS(maybe, #Please)

Ok this is a thread I hope that will catch on. So basically I own an iPod and iPad and now I own an android phone and I love android phones, but there are still tons of features from iOS which I love and hope would be/have been implemented on updates
I'm sure most of you own an apple device and I just want this to be a thread where you describe features you love (even the smallest thing) on your apple devices that ANDROID DOES NOT HAVE and lets hope an android official would read it and add the features to future updates
Now let me Start off to say android NEEDs to have a stock ebook reader app, not from other providers that comes pre installed I'm taking like google books but better. I'm a readaholic and the apple iBooks is fabulous, I love the feature where you can go from day to night contrast, I know there is an app in the market with similar feature but its not easy on the eyes and just not comparable. Next is the dictionary I love the feature so if I didn't understand a word I would just highlight it and click on define and it would have the meaning and once again I know there is such a in an app in the market but it requires internet connection which is dumb, what if I'm in the subway reading and don't have reception.
Another feature I have come to love is the reader feature where it removes all the ads and everything from the main page and just has the words. I love this feature when I read long Wikipedia articles and stuff and once again it has the define for words I don't know also the feature where you can save it for future reading is awesome.
Most of you probably by now think I'm a nerd as i read alot but i just love reading, its like tv in your head of course doesnt beat the real thbfing but its fun to read. ANYWAYS There are tons of feature in-between I would like on the android but for now I'll leave to you guys to contribute what feature you want from apple to android, even the smallest lamest feature you might think. Sometimes the feature we want is already there but just not good enough which I totally get but anyways lets start contributing people.

With Safari browser in IOS, you can tap the status bar to go back to the top of the web page, very useful with some long website.
Safari browser, its the best mobile browser by a long mile!
I don't have an iphone but I do want to say that as an android user I really couldn't care less what the stock apps are. There is almost nothing on my note that I haven't replaced with something that I liked better.
If you haven't found an application you liked though, that's another issue.
You realize iBooks is Apple's attempt to copy the kindle app: dictionary, black and white contrast screen, and whispersync.
I like Apple products too--but for the record--Apple didn't invent the mp3 player, the smart phone, or the e book reader.
Check out the kindle app; it's free. And it has all the features you want.

Safari lacks auto fit paragraph to the width of the screen for pinch and zoom function.
This is one of the deal breakers for me when considering Android vs iphone. Others such as non-3rd party keyboard and small screen.

This belongs in General as it has nothing to do specifically with the Note.
Ads, just root it (it the jailbreak for Android, let's say) and install AdFree or AdAway.

Hey, you're not the only one who loves reading here. I do, too. Other than this phone, I also have a Desire HD and a Sensation XE (DHD is my first Android) and I prefer my main phones with big screen real estate, mainly because I read e-books on them. I have to admit that I still like the traditional books--- nothing like the smell and the texture of a new book and feeling it on your hands but I've come to know the advantages of e-books over paper books, mainly portability. With e-books and your phone, you can read anywhere and anything you like from your app's shelf without breaking your shoulder bones from all the carrying around of thick, heavy hardcovers. And there are many times of the day when I have nothing to do which could be better spent reading--- like waiting in line or during commercials if I'm watching TV. Besides, e-book copies are usually cheaper than real books so if I like something, I can go off and purchase it electronically and then if I find myself liking it, that's when I purchase the real thing.

Wtf? This thread has nothing to do with who copied who or what came first. It has to do with features that ios has that android doesn't. Let's not turn it into a debate of who had what first or who is better.

Time for some intervention to get this thread back on its rails!
I think the one thing that iOS has that android needs is buttery smoothness. iOS has beautiful screen rotation animations, and hardly ever stutters when scrolling. Admittedly, the smooth scrolling has to do with how apple has true multi touch, while androids is emulated, but that has to do with how apple is a money grabbing pissfart corporation that thinks that they can patent everything and inhibit technological progression. But that is for a different thread.
/rant.
I also enjoy how iOS applications tend to look nice and more professional. 90% of Android apps look like they were designed for use with Windows 97. Nasty fluorescent colors, jagged edges, all around child like. Apple has to approve their apps before publishing which is good because the end user profits in that situation.
One last thing android needs is a good keyboard. Apples keyboard has special key prediction techniques that predict what keys will be pressed next and then makes that key's sensor area larger so that it is easier to press it. Also, when you long press text in iOS, you get a magnifying glass that makes it easier to fine tune text selection. I've only ever seen this in devices running sense UI. This needs to be universal.
(About the screen auto rotate animations, ice cream sandwich does a good job implementing it, its just that it still isn't as smooth, and ICS isn't readily available to most android phones without having to root, and even then, a lot of things are broken in ICS roms.

I can and I have. It is by far the best Rom out there, but this is beside the point. The point is to discuss what STOCK android needs, if I read the OP right. Plus MIUI doesn't offer the keyboard, animation, magnifying glass, or smoothness aforementioned.

Completely agree, the same issue on my previous Nokia phone. When I download apps it just looks so bugle because some apps look professional, some look pixelated, somenjust blank at times. In apple they are proffesional weather they are free apps or paid apps, they are all slick
Another thing I hope is in ics is emoticons, not talking about the original android faces. I'm talking the emoji ones from apple, I love those and some of it are funny, putting an emoticon on a text message like have a good day or good night just cheers people up (I have noticed).

What would make you want an iPhone?

Don't rip my head off for this one.
I'm on vacation, and have to out my phone in airplane mode for the week. I can only do hangouts with people who either have the app, or have android, and use the app. My gf on the other hand, can iMessage all of her friends, video chat with all her friends, etc. Also, my work emails will only work on iPhone, or on android with an outdated gingerbread styled app.
My question is this -
Hypothetically, if the iPhone had a 5" screen, and allowed widgets and launchers, what would you need the iPhone to have in order for you to switch?
I don't think I would switch because I love the look of android, but I feel like I'm waiting for the OS to unify better between OEM makers, and that doesn't seem to be in the near future. I'm jut curious about everyone else's thoughts.

Nothing would make me want an iPhone. Not now not ever. That thing is insanely pointless, and has crappy software with random bugs. Not even the hardware is good and it costs a fortune.
I'd guess making expensive apps so all the rich and upper middle class people would buy them.. Cause rich people constantly know nothing about technology and populate themselves with iDevices just because they think it's good because it's expensive and popular.

You could have used Google Voice app to text (SMS) your friends (regardless of whether they had iMessage or Hangouts installed), and could have used hangouts/skype for video chatting.
Work Emails, well, yeah, that sucks, My employer (over 75000 employees worldwide) doesn't have an Android app to access the secure network. When some employees (on a quarterly call with a few thousand employees) asked a senior VP "Why no android app", he responded, and I quote, "because as you all know, Android is so easily hacked, and is insecure". Numbnuts!
Yes, I (along with several others) sent Emails to him explaining the facts (and he said that he'll talk to the IT team to see what was needed to get an Android app developed), but the point is that Android development has been on the backburner for many corporations for many (stupid) reasons.
Would I switch to iPhone? If they provided the ability to use launchers/widgets, *and* the ability to sideload apps, *and* the ability to install adaway type apps, *and* the ability to use tasker type app, and they had the screen size that I wanted, and had deep Google Now integration, sure, why not... It would just be another "Android" phone by that time

See, that's the beauty and beast about android. I love that you can sideload or install an app to do what you want to do, but I don't like the fact that its not integrated better. That's the thing that made me (consider) the iPhone.
For things that I really wish Google would do, is force OEM makers to do specific things to the OS of the phone. For example, integrate hangouts as the main texting app, that way we android users can hangout with each other. The user can download their own texting app if they choose, but at least make the stock one hangouts. Because almost all my android friends have Samsung's, and I have yet to see hangouts being used by them.

Thing is, some people (me included) like the fact that Google doesn't (yet) force me to use a specific app for a specific purpose. Samsung/HTC and others do bundle their own apps (that can't be uninstalled), and most users call that bloat.
It is rumored that Google will bring VoIP calling capability to Hangouts in the near future (as it did for iOS last year). Once that happens, I would expect more users would install Hangouts (even if it wasn't installed by default). Whether they use it as their texting app would depend on them, but at least you would still be able to use video hangouts with your friends then.
About your first few statements - what is not integrated? From what I know about iOS, Google's integration is just as good (if not better), without taking away the ability of the user to choose a different app for a specific need. Unlike iOS, Android allows you to choose the default app for any action. In my opinion, that provides the best integration.

Hmm, to be honest, an iPhone with 5" screen and widgets/launchers would probably be enough for me to make the switch. Although the OS would still be very "limited" compared to Android, I don't think I would be too bothered about it. It simply just works better and smoother than Android does or will. People can post benchmarks all they want, or videos comparing app opening times which in reality don't mean that much, but the fact is, the overall experience is a lot smoother on iOS. Even Nexus 5 still lags and stutters when scrolling which is pretty amazing considering the hardware that is inside.
Hangouts comes preinstalled on any Android device that has the Play Store now (I believe... but at least the big flagships like the Galaxy S5, HTC One, Nexus 5, etc...). Your friends may not use it, but it's there  I think it's been said, but the only reason iMessage/Facetime seems more integrated is that Apple forces you to use it. If Google changed it so that all Android phones had to use Hangouts and alternatives couldn't be installed by the user (there are alternatives for the iPhone, but you need to jailbreak and use Cydia to install them), then I'm sure all of your friends would be using Hangouts. But you'd also upset a lot of Android users who like the choice.
I do think it's ridiculous that Hangouts for iPhone has voice call capability while Hangouts for Android does not.
Anyway, to get me to switch there would need to be a lot of changes. Bigger screen, better support for alternative apps (SMS, dialer, browsers that aren't just interface swaps with the same backend, launcher, etc...), a more complete interface overhaul, access to apps installed from outside the app store (without jailbreaking), NFC support, something like Tasker...
In my country where many people are switching to android, they still don't use Hangout. It all depends on the messing service that is used by all and that's WhatsApp here.

I think it would be nice to force that as the stock messaging app, but give users the choice to change it via the market. But that way, my not so techy friends can actually start using hangouts with integration and the techy ones can figure out how to use other messaging apps if they prefer.

Well, that's how Google handles the Nexus phones, but that's far more control than they have exerted on manufacturer skinned phones. Samsung already doesn't like that they need to include all of the Google apps (apart from the play store) alongside their own, I think that enforcing that they be the default would cause an issue. Especially with Samsung's market share of Android phones.
what would make me want an iphone...hmm...maybe if it wasnt an iphone...that is all.
They'd have to become fully open source for me to even think about it and even then.. Na shock treatment is the only way. ;P Females tend to prefer iphones more than males i think. At least more females that I know use them vs males who i know and they will NOT switch.. My wife, ex now had to have one so i bought her one when we were together. Wasn't impressed with anything but the camera and now Android is just as good in that department.. Android rules!! \m/ Been with Android since the G1.. I have so much love and respect for open source and the customization of Android blows apple off the map.. We can tweak our devices 100% with root, custom roms, kernels and themes.. Aosp is just too great imo.

The ability to obtain root access through means other than exploits that Apple patches as fast as they can. If that were possible, along with some more customization, I might consider it. And a price drop. Way too expensive.
Nothing...ever. Even if it was free. Lol

[Q] Answer me this

I'm writing a paper on the use of apps for my college course. Basically, I'm wanting to know what the main reason is for the development of apps from a developer's point of view. Is it money, making something useful, or pure entertainment in developing? Also, if you're not a developer how many apps do you have and how many do you actually use/find useful? If I could get some people to chime in and share their experiences and opinions it'd be greatly appreciated!
Non developer.
I mostly use (in order):
Tapatalk (car and IT forums)
Cortana (Windows Phone digital assistant)
Browsers (data compression, normal, tor)
Games (allsorted)
Jesse, first of all thanks for the reply! It seems as if all your apps have an actually use for you. Have you ever paid for any of your apps and if so was it worth the money?
Not a developer, but I mostly use browsers and I also use ppsspp for my gaming needs. I find it fun to experiment with an Android device, because that way you get to explore your device's full potential. And since android is highly customisable, the possibilities are endless.
Thanks for the reply! It's interesting that you guys both brought up that you use multiple browsers. Is there a reason for this? In Jesse's case I can see how you would need a separate browser for tor to access .onion sites but personally I just use the stock browser and in the very rare occasion will I open up Google chrome. Could you tell me a bit more about ppsspp? I have my note 4 rooted and running custom ROM so the customization is great I completely agree. Android is awesome!

I do have other apps too, I just don't use them as regularly. Some of these are different launchers, lock screen customizers, and apps like tasker, as well as some one click root apps I'm trying. (if you can help me root my MT6572 please help here

)
All the apps I originally listed I never paid for except for GTA SA(not pirated, but I have some originally free games that are cracked)
On this post, I have paid for tasker, nova launcher prime and my locker pro. That was mostly because I had a free $20 google play voucher with my phone.

As for browsers, I use google chrome on my xperia sp (I might get rid of it when I root it though), whereas on my xperia t I mostly use the stock sony browser. Now, as for the ppsspp, it's actually a psp emulator. In other words, it allows you to run psp games (in .iso format) in your android phone. I think it's one of the best apps on the play store, since I don't like most native android games like temple run, minions and such. Since you have a note 4, which is a very powerful device, I highly recommend you to check it out.
This one IS coming from a developer.
Oftentimes, when I make an app, I saw a hole and I wanted to fill it. The most recent app spawned itself from the Droid Turbo not being rooted until now(finally).
People heard there was a root method so they were waiting on a hair trigger's notice to find out if it had been released. So I took it upon myself to let people know when it happened, where to get more info, and when it was released, how to get it for themselves. It spawned over 400 unique downloads on 15 different devices with an aggregate rating of 4.82.
I also like to improve on apps that I've already seen. If I feel something is drastically missing, I like to look at what they have and ask what I can do better with that.. then add what's missing.
Another example is an app I created that is made for creative commons photo sharing. So for example, when someone needs a picture for their design project, then they can simply open the app, search the word, and download. I came up with it for my senior project and we branded the whole thing, but it never went anywhere because it was unrefined.
In contrast to that reason, I often make apps because I'm testing something and it snowballs. I have a bunch of different "app pieces" in a handful of languages sitting around on my computer.
To summarize, I make apps because:
1. There's a hole and I'm going to fill it.
2. I want to improve what I see.
3. I'm simply passionate about it.
Hope that helps!
