[Q] CM9 nightly more changes previewed but no more roms? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

as seen in cm9 changelog.. there are many upgrade to do in next cm9 nightly , but upgrade seems stopped.. last nightly was cm-9-20120916.. september!!
in changelog we stil wait next nightly.. at moment at least 4 me is best rom 4 galaxys ( flashplayer & camera save to sd very well )
any news?

I agree. CM9 is better than any JB rom. All the JB roms have annoying little bugs for me. Especially choppy video. Drives me nuts. CM9 is damn near flawless...especially with devil kernel. JB to me is useless....the tiny very tiny extra speed isn't worth the negatives it brings.
Its ridiculous that something like CM9 stopped receiving updates on a device like this.

roms
Hey,
I really think the best rom for me right now is the one that Cyanogenmod has out. Especially for the captivate.... its 4.0.4. Its really because cyanogen updates the rom everyday and fixes bugs every day and posts them as nightlies. http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/samsung-captivate there is the website.
Also... here is a website of a lot of different roms.
http://alchemistar.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-captivate-custom-rom-list-1110.html
I havent tried a lot but I have heard plenty of good things about dark knight. But really... cyanogen is hopping these days!
thanks! i'll check this out!

Review of ROMs 4.0.4
Here's my short review of available ROMs:
AOKP - very nice looking, sleek, fast, smooth, has some bugs which are still not fixed after so many releases (media bug, USB mount bug)
CM9 - not very smooth, not sure why, stuttery
Doc's V12 - AOKP based + TouchWiz
Darky V5 - had some bugs, ppl complain, didn't try personally
ICSSGS - tried it first, very barebone, good, but sad looking.
SlimICS - by far smoothest and bug free, but somewhat sad looking.
Nostalgia - based on SlimICS plus some beef, bacon and veggies. The best IMHO.
there is no best rom, only best for your likes.
read the features available and choose.

CM10 vs SlimBean vs HellyBean

Currently CM9 on my wife's Captivate but it's messed up right now and I figure I might as well upgrade it to JB now. Which ROM is best between these 3 options:
CM10
HellyBean
SlimBean
Anyone using CM10 or SlimBean: do you feel any lag due to the lack of /datadata?
From what I gather they are all fairly equal, but it seems slightly different for everyone. Flash one and try it.
I have been on slim for awhile. Love it.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
I could be very wrong but to my understanding the roms you've listed have all transitioned to the same partition layout and should all include the datadata partition. With that being said I have never used CM10 so I can't tell you much about it. Of the other two I would have to choose Hellybean. Its not that I don't like Slim as I've used it quite often and check out their new works often. It's just that Helly seems to give the best balance of features and stability plus I think my phone runs a little smoother with the devil kernel.
As always your experiences will likely vary and it's all a matter of how your cappy runs and what settings you use.
I've tried only a few different roms from 2.3 to 4.1.2 and Slim Bean 4.1.2 thus far is what i have found to be the best. Well, technically 4.1 as I just put on 4.1.2 yesterday. So far, no major problems.
My experiences is that 4.1 stayed smooth and fast and EVERY other rom eventually slowed down or started slow. Hellybean, Dark Knight, Fasty, Firefly (2nd favorite). I forget what else I've tried, but I would vouch for Slim Bean as being awesome. Only problem i've had is a few random shut downs which is a known bug. Other than that, good battery life, no reception issues, very little lag.
Hellybean, it was snappy at the start but eventually got laggy. I was sad cause i thought I liked it. Took me forever to try to call someone eventually.
+1 for Slimbean, very smooth and fast
I haven't been on SlimBean since shortly after the move to JB but I do remember it being a good rom. I have been on Helly (Salty Bean actually) for quite a while now and prefer the better balance of features and stability. It really is up to each individual though. I definitely recommend trying them all out.
so basically what is the difference of slim bean to cm10.1? and all of you saying stability.. did your phone hangs, or shutdown? been using cm10.1 for a month now no problem so far for me..

They're all stable if flashed correctly. The difference is in the user as it's up to personnal preference.
Hellybean or xperia captivating Which is now based off hellybean both work amazing on the Cappy. Best my Cappy ever felt. Hellybean devil came a long way.

Very good to me! Slim is very nice as well (kind of biased from history of CM devices)

[Q] Which custom rom?

I'm a noob when it comes to Android roms and such.
I have a rooted samsung galaxy s infront of me now but I have a question.
I have read that a lot of roms disable a couple of original features, like the google play store, video camera etc.
Now my question; Is there a custom rom that gives you anything like android 4.0+ for example with no features being lost?
Yes I have heard about CM but I read that it does remove a couple of features which I need..
What features will you miss? Play store and video work perfectly on cm10 and 10.1 based ROMs plus they trend to have lots of extra features compared to stock. I'm running Mackay ROM based on jelly bean 4.2 (cm 10.1) with semaphore kernel. Stable and really fast.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
I'm using RemICS-JB_4.2 , and for me it is very stable and fast, UI is from SGS3, worth to try...
The mackay rom is very good
So it's just a myth that you will lose some stock functions? Don't trust me on my word but I think I've read that it removes HD filming or something.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
You can enable xl ram (around 400 mb) in some kernels such as semaphore and devil which can mean you loose hd video, but by default it is disabled in almost all ROMs. So if you leave ram alone it's not a problem and I still have 720p video. Tbh there is a patch now that makes 720 work with big ram anyhow, but I manage just fine with the 389mb standard with semaphore so I haven't tested this.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
So Semaphore kernel and CM as ROM leaves all normal features intact? Perfect. Just one last question; a lot of people prefer CM9 over CM10. Any specific reason for this?

Because CM9 is more stable. CM10 requires more resources to run on our old phones. You might not get enough RAM.I also noticed some games force closed on CM10.But they all work nicely in CM9.
Thanks for the answers.
Something popped in my head so that leaves me with 1 more question; I currently have hardcore speedmod kernel and I did the lagfix (transfer to EXT4) and it took some SD space of course. Now before I go to Semaphore kernel should I first somehow uninstall the lagfix? And how?
Thanks!

This is becoming less of an issue as development goes on but it is a factor to consider. I have to overclock cpu to get high end games to work. But you can't even install most of them on stock 2.3 so depends what you're after. I prefer the extra features that cm 10.1 gives. Can always flash to cm9 stable and give it a go and then upgrade from there, sensible to go to cm9 then 10 anyhow. You will have to full wipe between 9 and 10 though. So titanium backup is the best app you will ever install.

I'll just loan this thread a bit because I have a similar situation. I've only changed ROMs few times and I'm kinda noob myself too. I'm looking for a fast and stable ROM. Few days ago I installed ELITEMOVILS:s 4.2.1 galaxy nexus stock rom. It's good but cant get the wifi working properly so I thought I'd try another one. Should I go for JB 4.1.2 or for 4.2.1? Are the 4.1.2 releases more stable and is there a big difference in features and speed? Also battery life is quite important factor for me when choosing ROM (BTW has anyone found a good replacement battery with longer battery life than the stock one?). I dont update ROMs that frequent so it would be important that the release would be stable and functioning.
Slim Roms are pretty lightweight 4.2.1 beta 1 for me has been pretty stable and responsive. I also downloaded and flashed Semaphore 2.9.0s afterwards.

4.1.2 should be more stable than 4.2.1 as its been developed longer and even has gotten the official stable version released.
4.2 does bring some new features like all new releases but not as major as for example 4.1 brought, for this reason Google decided to keep the Jellybean name for the newer version.
Regarding battery life your best bet is a Gingerbread ROM, but frankly I'm satisfied with my CM10 in that regard.
I'm using a Pisen 1700mAh battery, and its very good for its price,I bought it from Deal Extreme, but be careful to research a battery before buying any, most of them are horrible and can even break your phone in some cases.
It's been said an official 1800mAh battery meant for the Epic 4g (Carrier-locked Samsung Galaxy S2) fits our phone even though it's thicker; I just bought one myself, but it's being shipped from the US and I'm in Norway so it'll be a week before I could confirm that myself...
The Wi-Fi issue with 4.2 is known and pawitp had released a fix for it, I don't know if the current nightlies from the CM team have incorporated it

[Q] Incredible S JellyBean Roms Comparison

There have now been severel JellyBean ROMS released for the HTC Incredible S.
I was hoping that I could get some opinion on how well each one is working.
So far i have found the following ROMS:
Codename Android and JellyBean Evolution by Nic
There is a comparison of them here.
The thread pretty much outlines that they are smooth bountiful ROMS which they are. They work really well, however, I have noticed some extra things wrong with them other then the outlined ones:
-Loudspeaker does not work and breaks the mic for the call.
-Sometimes the text on the homescreen becomes blurred, you have to lock the screen for a while to get that to go away.
-The full screen videos crash the phone, the fix doesn't work on my phone.
The next ROM i have seen is the CyanVivo X mod. I haven't tried this one but it seems like it has all the same problems. Front camera doesn't work. Full screen vids etc.
There is one that has been released recently:
It is an unofficial CM release:
It seems to have solved all of the problems with the ROM, the front camera works, it seems like it is quick, the only thing it doesnt handle is video camera. Can anyone tell me about problems with this ROM.
I was hoping to make a good Thread which compares each of these ROMs and which ones are the best?
The first two are just ROMs to say you have JB on your phone, both are buggy but some people can live with this and use them daily. These were the first JB ROMs, the same Dev got them running then support stopped.
CV10 is the breakthrough JB ROM, Dev working on it and the ROM has potential. More stable than the first two ROMs as Dev focusing on the kernel, currently still got a couple of bugs which some people can live with to be able to use the ROM daily. Keep an eye on this thread for development progress and regular feedback.
CM10 has a ninja for a Dev, works in the background and appears absent from the forum. Then ROM appears. The ROM currently seems to be the most stable/complete JB ROM and has least bugs. Many people using this as a daily use ROM. But is the Dev still working on it to perfect it, how long until the next update... nobody knows!
I tried this ROM, battery life seemed short, I struggled to get a days normal use from one charge. Plus I wanted my video camera to be working so I can film my young kids when I needed to. Back on ICS/sense ROM now.
These are just my own crude opinions.

there is a paranoid android JB ROM by Nikhil: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863862
I had used the ones you have listed below as well as the paranoid android ROM.. i found the paranoid to be less buggy...give it a shot.. it is a very different visual experience.. the rom is based on CM9.. you will have some minor issues:
1. front camera won't work
2. Adjusting in call volume resets the ringtone volume
3. Google now may not work..
4. tablet mode won't have an option to enable USB connectivity...
...
Give it a try; apart from the above issues, it is a very stable ROM; i was on it for about 6 months with no issues..
1. It is a different experience altogether - not many tweaks is what I found but a visual delight
2. google now issue will be resolved after you flash the "4.1 to 4.2" package; it will also introduce photosphere: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991734

From reading the thread on the paranoid android it looks like it has more bugs then the Unofficial CM ROM. Things including permenant sleep and crashing with full screen video, which i experienced with the original ROMS from Nik.
The only problems I have with the Unofficial ROM is that the battery drains quite quickly (About 10Hrs on Battery with Juice Defender Pro), it can be a bit Laggy at times which i didn't experience with Niks ROMS and sometimes it doesn't quite wake up properly, (The button lights come on but you have to wait a bit for the screen)
Hi,
My experience with the ROM was different.. yes is an issue with the full screen video but the thread mentions the solution.. I did not have any issues with phone not-able-to-sleep... the battery was also good - it used to last atleast a day with good usage on calls...
With tools like 'Easy Battery Saver' it even touched 2 days with normal usage..
I was on the ROM for six months with no issues.. also i did not use the default launcher bundled with the ROM; I had installed APEX launcher rather..

Try turning off network based location in gps settings and rebooting the phone. it's a known bug with cm. :/
Are you only looking at CM/AOSP/AOKP roms?
I really don't think any are ready for daily use. Every one I used I thought was okay, then I needed to use the camera or some setting and it would crash. I'm going to wait for szezso to make a fully working kernel.
I think I'm going to test lacoste right now though... I'll tell you what I think.

[Q] Most stable ASOP/AOKP ROM for IncS

Was wondering what do you guys think is the most stable Jellybean ASOP / AOKP ROM out there. Would be interested to know the most stable ICS ASOP/AOKP ROM too.
I currently have Lacoste running which I find pretty ok. Would love to know what the general opinion is in the community regarding ASOP/AOKP ICS and Jellybean ROMS

The CM10(.1) made by dla5244 are probably the most stable jellybean ROMs out there. Szeszo's CyanVivoX (CM10) is also very stable. (no real significant difference between Szeszo's and dla5244's version of CM10).
There wasnt really much development with ICS AOSP/AOKP as far as Im concerned. Szeszo was working on a CM9 but I don't know if he gave up on it or not :/ For AOKP, theres Ice Cold Jelly v8.3 and thats about it.
Note: Id stay AWAY from PACman. Although it has great battery life, there are still a number of quirks that still need to be ironed out (bugs).
I recently tested an unofficial CM9 by Szezso. You can find it on his google plus profile. The ROM was pretty smooth and with a respectful battery life. Sadly I had a problem with what is supposed to be the main feature of a mobile device...Calling. Or perhaps I'm simply too old fashioned and the issue is not that big
I was not able to hear my phone ring and dealing another number either... By the way I was the only one on the G+ thread regarding the ROM to report this issue. I would raccomand you to try CM10.1 by dla or szeso and then, if you are unhappy with the battery life, the abovementioned unofficial CM9 or Ice cold sandwich, for which you can find a good set of themes in the proper section of the forum.

I dont find many bugs at all. I mean the screen wakes up for me when i get a call which is nice. I think for me, its just the camera. Its good enough to be a stable driver. Plus its battery is pretty good. I could squeeze in much more Pokemon Flora Sky
I've been staying with Lacoste Mod for several weeks, and the performance was slowly going down all the time. It didn't happen at once, there wasn't any particular day when the performance dropped drastically, but the fact is that it kept becoming worse and worse through time. Yesterday I flashed back to stable AR HD, because I needed less battery greedy ROM to take abroad, and I was astonished with how incredibly fast my incredible s became!
Has anyone noticed such a regression on the other JB AOKP/AOSP ROMs? Do they all start lagging in a few days after being flashed?
I was on viper vivo and then on incredible and found them to consistently lose speed. So much so that they became pretty much unusable. I then switched to lacoste.. And then switched to cyan x because of bluetooth issues. Loving the snappiness of cyan x. And its been pretty stable.
I thought aosp/akop roms would be far more responsive coz they don't have the bloatware of sense and that indeed has been my experience
anyone using CyanVivo X previously and migrated to CyanVivo 10.1?
is the flashing method hard?
and how is the performance?

The flashing method? Are you joking me?? its the same on every ROM -_-
And regarding performance, if youve ever tried PACman then in reltivity to that, CyanVivo 10.1 is more stable and in my opinion, has better battery life. If you are comparing it to dla5244's CM10.1, then its more just updated of that (repo synced at later date)

Hi
can you list down the bugs you noticed for PACman.. I have been using it for about a month now and have not noticed much from user's perspective.. except that is has developed a slight lag but guess that is happening with a couple of ROMs
I've also experienced gradual performance decay on some of these popular ROM's, with the most recent being Lacoste.
I asked about the performance issues in the Lacoste thread and nobody seems to be answering. Glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing this!
Do you recommend cyanx then as the most stable and updated ROM (Android version) in terms of performance?

I would recommend dla's CM10 simply cuz u dont needa wait 3 or so seconds to unlock your phone :/ Szeszo says its fixed but I dont see it so :/ the things that CVX trumps is battery life, stability, and dem mods man.. they kick @** XD

there are a couple of bugs listed on szezso's thread - prominent one being screen wakeup bug for incoming calls / alarms..if you can live with those, then yes, it's a pretty hot ROM
Sounds good. Any other recommendations for a ROM?

yes because you start loading apps on your phone and that'll wear it down slowly.
