Nexus 7 Toolkit (Root) 4.1 - Wants to update - Nexus 7 General

So I had Jelly Bean on my N7 from factory. I decided to root it, and I used the toolkit to root it.
It reverted it to 4.1 and deleted everything (basically a stock flash) which was irritating, but I got it all set back up.
Just got a pop up to update it to 4.2.
What should I do?
If 4.1 is better, how do I make the pop up to update go away.
If 4.2 is better, will I maintain root through the update? If no, how can I, or reroot.

If 4.1 is better is kind of personal choice, most like the 4.2 update, some hate.
Technically it's better because it comes with new features but it also nixes a few like tablet UI and some of the new functions are still a bit buggy (esp. multiuser related things).
Not sure you can get rid of the update dialog permanentely.
If you just let the update go it's course you'll loose root - but that's not a problem, as you can simply re-root after the update.

I'm pretty sure I was already on 4.2 when I rooted it using the toolkit. If I do the update, and reroot, won't it drop me back down to 4.1 again?

Use ota rootkeeper app from the play store to keep root when updating. That's what I used and worked perfectly.

HI all, this thread answered most of the questions i had but one,
when i unlocked/rooted 4.1 i installed twrp then updated twrp with goomanager app ....now seeing as im on the newest twrp recovery i wont have any bootloops or anything when i click up update right?

anyone?
bump*

Bootloops have nothing to do with the recovery, they are usually caused by incompatible system data from a different ROM.
Since you'll be updating the "same ROM" to a newer version (stock 4.1.x to 4.2, if I go you right) everything should be fine.

Went ahead and did the update. It maintained root as far as I can tell...
Not 100% sure I had JB to begin with now...

This is what I know. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The N7 gets a reset when you unlock the bootloader, not by rooting (flashing su.zip) or flashing a custom recovery.. This is supposed to be a "security feature" by Google.
The S3 comes with an already open bootloader. Furthermore other vendors might not have included this "security feature" in their phones/tablets.

I did the OTA update to 4.2 and did not lose root. Prior to update I was on stock 4.1 with Trinity kernel and rooted using nexus toolkit and CWMR. Only thing I had to do was flash back to stock 4.1 kernel as the OTA failed with Trinity, then using CWMR installed the update that was sat in the cache. At the end of flashing the update CWMR warned me that the ROM I was installing wanted to use its own recovery, click no to keep CWMR, then it warned that root may be lost, click yes to keep root.
No other apps needed and I'm now on stock 4.2 with root access. Only thing in have lost is my tablet interface from build prop tweaks. Once I find a way round that happy days!

[FYI] OTA Update 4.08.605.19

I saw this on DroidLife and figured y'all might benefit from this (I hadn't seen any post's about it) so here you go
Update to Build 4.08.605.19 Published on February 1st, 2013 Written by: Kellex DroidLife.com
The original DROID Incredible by HTC, a device released almost three years ago, is set to receive its next OTA update. The update is minor to build 4.08.605.19, and simply includes a fix to reduce reboots, but man, how random is that?
We didn’t think anything could top the randomness of the Thunderbolt Ice Cream Sandwich update that popped up yesterday through Big Red’s support site, however, it’s safe to say that this just topped it.
The update is 4.2MB in size.

Love it. Seriously though if we are still seeing minor ota's for GB we should have ATLEAST got ICS 4.0.something. I wonder how many Inc's are still activated on Verizons network.

Well considering the extreme annoyance caused by the 2am reboot thing that was introduced with the last OTA, this update was long overdue. Hey, an update to ICS would be truly awesome but it would be a bit bigger than 4.2Mb I dare say (and would involve a whole lot more time and money to develop, something that would be very majorly hugely unlikely for a three year old device like this).

Verizons excuse is they didn't want to have to repartition the internal storage which would be required to fit ICS and all their bloat.

Oh ya. I kinda figured it would be some stupid HW limitation preventing us from seeing official ICS but bloatware is the worst excuse ever.

Cm 10.1 doesn't even fit well on the inc without some tweaking. There's no way a sense ICS will fit on 250mb when AOSP is smaller than sense. Do you remember how the sense build that I worked on with puremotive needed symlinks to fit and that's the lighter version of sense?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Coincidentally, I was thinking of sending my old Incredible back to stock in order to attempt maximizing its stability, because I'm giving it to my kid as a games platform for travel, etc.
The phone is no longer registered on Verizon's network, so I'm guessing that means I would not get access to an OTA update if I placed the 4.08.605.15 RUU on this phone - correct?

Yes the update is now active. I saved it if anyone wants to root it and or check it out. I have not installed it.
I have the stock ROM.. I got prompted to update an hour ago.. it went through fine. I was hoping it would fix the proximity sensor bug which drains the battery (dialer process in battery view). Haven't checked whether it was fixed yet, but I doubt it.
FYI, I'm using the phone through Page Plus.. which relies on Verizon's network. I never expected to see an update for this phone..

Tried It
Just from my experience, it works well! Used it while running Elegancia 20.0 (with S-Off)
I did encounter a bug though. After it sideloads the rom for the first time, you need to manually reboot into recovery for it to install the apps or else you'll be stuck in a animation bootloop.
So what all does it do? I know it unlocks the bootloader for you, but does it install a recovery as well, or just install the ROM and leave it at that?

Kudos the dev team for the installer app
Tried it myself on my HTC device. Works pretty good. But it has its faults as the installer will stump a couple of people not familiar with loading roms, unlocking devices, and recovery menus.
1. You gotta install HTC sync to install the HTC USB drivers. Then un-install the HTC syn software only. I had to debug this process on my end b/c the SYC software would cause a conflict with the Cynanogen installer. And was having issues when putting the device in debug mode > from the developer options.
2. The installer did unlock my phone, asked for token and all.
3. During the rom install, it did reboot the phone and caused me start the whole process over again; this happened about 2 times.
4. It does not install Gapps, you must get them and side load them via the recovery menu.
Other than that it worked like it was supposed to. It flash the follwing:
-CM 10.2-20131101-SNAPSHOT-InstallerBeta3-m7spr
-Android 4.3.1
Alas it did not fix the camera issue that has been plaguing some users ( a blue purple tint when taking pictures). Overrall its a good step in helping "teh noobs" in using custom roms on their smartphones.

You know you sound ridiculous, right? I know how and have rooted/flashed so many roms on my Evo that I got kind of burnt out. I was one of the early adopters that had to go through the 45 min, you could very possibly brick your phone, root method. The two reasons I haven't gone through it with the One is I don't have the time, but more importantly, I don't have the patience. This takes away all effort/worry/questions. I was probably going to just let the One be, now I will most likely root in the next few days. Do I necessarily want CM? No. This will make me put it on my phone and try it before I flash something else now though.
That is my thinking as an experienced flasher. "Knowing how" and choosing to do it the inefficient way sounds like you are a hipster or something.

The thing is, nobody's really wrong here. If you already are familiar with the process of flashing, than this is of little use to you, other than checking it out. If you are new to flashing, this gives you a more safe and simple way to go about it. Whether or not you use or like CM, it is still a great leap forward that a development group is taking it upon themselves to offer solutions to problems that plague any user with a taste for customization. And we are all hipsters here, in the sense that the vast majority of device users have no idea what we do here or how we do it. Even more don't care. I think everybody finds that it is easy to misunderstand or read attitude where there is none actually intended. It happens to me all the time. My penny and a half.
I tried it, unfortuantely, it just rebooted the phone into the bootloader and stops. I'm sure it's because I have twrp installed. I have no idea how to switch from twrp to cyanogen.
EDIT: Okay their wiki is a lot better now, AND the mountpoints are correct! cyanogen recovery worked, flashing last nights 10.2 nightly, wish me luck!

[Q] What's the newest firmware for S3 Mini I8190?

Hi,
I tried searching but the search here on XDA isn't working well for me, don't know why but I can only search once, after that the search box become un-clickable and I need to browse back and forward again to use the search again, did that a few times with no results.
Anyway, what I wanted to know is what is the exact newest Official Firmware version for the Galaxy S3 Mini I8190 (Regular, no letter after it)
my current version is I8190XXAME1, is there a newer version available? I'm having all sorts of strange problems and hoping a newer version exists that will solve them.
Thank you.
I assume I8190XXAMG4 is newer than I8190XXAME1, right?
That's the only thing I managed to find that looks newer, the firmware file is certainly from a newer date.

A couple of day ago my phone froze, had to remove the battery to release the freeze, since then, my display language, which was Hebrew disappeared from the language selection list and even apps like morelocale 2 didn't work, only temporarily until the next restart of the phone.
After the upgrade the Hebrew returned to the list of languages as normal.
Also, lately touchwiz seems to crash a lot, didn't have it yet since the upgrade to the new version.
Ahh OK. My wife and my friends phone both have apparently common issues where the battery gets drained quicker then it should. I'm currently reviewing custom ROMs for my friends phone, not that many on this phone.

JB Apps?

Hey guys!
I am thinking of buying Galaxy S! I know that it is only upgradable to 2.3.7 so I want to know that if I root and flash 4.4 kitkat on the device, will it be able to run ICS and JB exclusive apps?
Thnx!
What do you mean exactly??? The apps which runs on ics and jb should generally run under kitkat ,too...or what apps do you mean?

Generally apps have to be updated to newer versions of Android and most likely won't work straight out of the box until the dev updates them to support Kitkat. That being said, a lot of apps are being updated to support Kitkat, so you probably won't have any problems.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
95% of apps work fine on 4.4.
The other 5% will be updated very soon. It's not something to worry about if you're thinking of flashing a 4.4 ROM.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
No, no, no, no! You guys dont get it...sorry
What i am trying to ask is that since the original version of galaxy s is 2.3.5, there are some apps which are ONLY compatible with ICS devices and are NOT compatible with gingerbread (like Google chrome, etc)
So if I flash ICS, JB or KitKat ROM, will I be able to install these apps from the market?
If you install ICS, JB, or KK, you will be able to install any app that is available in the play store, with the exception of kitkat by what I said in my post above...
I wasn't actually aware that chrome doesn't install on GB... strange. I thought it would work. It should, because supposedly nearly 25% of android devices are still running GB...
25% is a lot of people not using chrome because Google haven't made it compatible with GB.

I know its a bit off topic, but Chrome relies on APIs only found in ICS and above, though I'm assuming you knew that/figured it out..

I would have thought that Google may have let GB devices use an older version of chrome in that case. It's a lot of android devices that they're ruling out from being able to use their browser. And we all know how much Google likes to steal our data supposedly. (Like I'm bothered lol)
Anyway, from the OP:
if I root and flash 4.4 kitkat on the device, will it be able to run ICS and JB exclusive apps?

KitKat will run all ICS and JB apps except for the ones that haven't yet been updated, of which there are few. The case of Chrome that you mentioned, is a unique one, or almost unique. There isn't really such a thing as ICS or JB exclusive apps, as far as I'm aware at least.

Another app that doesn't work with GB is Greenify.
Another one is SkyGo (at least the Italian version).
And what is your conclusion for flashing after opening this thread??? will you give kitkat a chance ???:good:

Hey guys!
I am thinking of buying Galaxy S! I know that it is only upgradable to 2.3.7 so I want to know that if I root and flash 4.4 kitkat on the device, will it be able to run ICS and JB exclusive apps?
Thnx!

He'd be crazy not to. Mine is running better with KK than it ever has done
Especially after I switched zram on. Zram is something I've never used before, but it works with KK. Don't use it if you're using ART though, it actually made my phone worse when I tried it. I ended up going back to dalvik because my phone was actually running worse with ART.
KK + dalvik + zram = Speedy and smooth phone

[Q] Just got 4.4.2 ATT Note 3 N900AUC. Rooting options?

hello everyone! today I just got my Note 3 N900a. with 4.4.2 KK today.I would like to root but I don't really know where to start as I don't want to brick this device. my G Pro is rooted and custom flashed but this is my first time dealing with Knox. so I have a few questions before I dive in:
1. Will Kingo root my Note 3 and not trip knox or UVDLV work better?..what about CF-Autoroot?.I heard sammy caught on so it might not work..but I saw that it will work but still trip knox? i'm rather confused here.. My AP is N900AUCUCNC2.
2. IF I DO GET ROOT PRIVILEGES. I know that I can't flash a custom recovery and there is an ongoing bounty to unlock the bootloader. So is it safe to use safetrap and will it affect knox? Or will safestrap remove my Recovery? (On my old S4 I did the mistake of Goomanagering a recovery and wiped my stock recovery but It still worked fine haha..just couldn't update or it would go into ODIN loop..which I could get out of) I will probably want to flash a custom de-bloated KK TW ROM if I do get the chance. I used safestrap on my old Razr M but is it different now? I sound like a total idiot right now but before the Note 3 I pretty much am a confident android power user but what scares me is that while I was using my G Pro, my friend from work had a Note 3 and he bricked it and now he's stuck using his Note 2. I don't want to make a critical mistake. If a more experienced user could guide me and show me what my options are or what I have to work with I would love you forever! XD
No root for 4.4.2 yet so you can't do anything

well this is a turn of events..my wife's white note 3 was 4.3 and the black one is 4.4.2. She knows that i'm a frequent rooter and that she was also debating getting the black one at the store. Plus she liked the B&W statusbar colors. So instead so I took her white one. She has the non-rootable 4.4.2 phone (she's not that much of a power user)...so now I have 4.3 to use...is THIS exploitable? my N900a Note 3's AP ends in MJ5.

Thanks much! and i'm probably going to stay on 4.3 until 4.4.2 becomes more exploitable. Once you go KK you can never go back!

oh! so I can flash KK and JB roms (via safestrap) and go back and forth anytime I like...so it's not like safestrap on the Droid Razr where users were locked into ICS from GB even from a custom ROM..gotcha!

no you cant say flash a kk rom then just flash a jb rom to go back it is a little more involved than that but it is not hard I would suggest you do a lot of reading first to get a kk rom read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712039

welp! got SuperSU so that's good and, yeah i'm just going to stay at 4.3 for now with a stock debloated touchwiz...but when I install SafesStrap knox's phucking "prevention information" with an app being forced to stop crap is coming up...so I take it that It wasn't successful?

No just means your rooted you can hide it with triangle away or Wanam exposed module

If you are going to stay on your stock rom MJ5 for awhile I would use TB and freeze your At&t update so you can stay on MJ5.

cool, I remember I had to do that on my S3 when I used EZ-Unlocker. Now in regards to this ROM (which is the one i'm looking at)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2714601
It requires 4.4.2 and rooted. I'm on 4.3 and rooted. If 4.4.2 is unrootable right now..how would I do it?..how would I go from 4.3 rooted to 4.4.3 and not be tied down?
I know the leaked non-official KK doesn't lock you down to KK and the AT&T version permanently does.

jerrycoffman45 and YRC123 thank you so much for helping me along the way! I have now the S5 experience with a rooted 4.4.2 and I couldn't be happier. I couldn't have done any of this without you. Users like yourself is why I keep coming back to XDA again and again (
