[Q] 2.3.6 to CM10/Slim bean and other questions - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, new member here! I have a Galaxy S and i'm running stock 2.3.6 with a semaphore kernel. (with built in CF root and CWM, also lagfixed).
My questions are:
1)Do i need to flash to a stock kernel to flash CM10?
2)Is it required to flash CM10 to flash slim bean or other JB roms?
3)What is a good ROM that will give a better gaming performance than my current GB ROM?

1) not necessary, but disable lagfix first.
2) I flashed JB rom direct from GB rom without problem, but someone recommend that flash CM9 first.
3)Try to search "VMLag Tuner". This script won't harm your phone.

Follow instructions for the particular ROM you want to flash
They usually don't mention the kernel, only the rom :/

The kernel is pretty much always included in the.zip, if you want to change from the ROM kernel to another, then usually just a case of using a cleaning script, or manually clearing cache/dalvik and a couple of others (init.d & Ns tools usually) and flash away
upgrade 2.2 to ics
You have to burn GB stock-rom 2.3 with odin first !!!
after you finish you need gb kernel like semaphore 1.8 also burn with odin (give the stock root).
and finnely flash the ics rom you wont (with the dev Specific rom Guidelines)

Afaik you don't need gb bootloader to flash to ics, (see slim website) however it is a good idea to in case you want to revert to gb, but in that case it is easier just to flash the boot loader....see nitr8s ezboot thread
Hi, I know it's been a really long time of the thread but what I know ALWAYS FLASH THE ROM FIRST AND THEN THE KERNEL

best kernel

Hey guys im a newbie to captivate and its developments and i need your help..............
i came from the htc g2 where there is no needed for flashing kernels for backing up roms/restoring or for wifi issues, everything was pretty much straight forward after root , but with the captivate you need a specific kernel for somethings to work...i need to backup roms and restore it......so my question which kernel comes alreaady rooted/hack to flash with odin and support wifi, clockwork, backup with clockwork recovery and everything ?
plus after flashing the kernel can i flash a recovery via rom manager?
i want a kernel that supports must miui roms and asop roms (ex: ics, jellybean)
and flashing kernels dosent break/erase root right?
PS: does a rom come with its own kernel?
Devil3 kernel 1.4.1 work just great for my JB MIUI 2.9.7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847668 - this rom has both latest MIUI and latest devil3 kernel

do i lose root or have to root everytime i flash a new kernel
or when i flash a rom
Devil Kernel is best on JB ROMs. Corn Kernel on GB. Every ROM comes with a kernel in it. It depends on the ROM. Reading is important.
Ok...so I rooted with corn kernel and flashed xm7...but asphalt 7 is too slow...can I flash a kernel to make the game faster ex: devil kernel and keep the Tom with root

just flash the rom with full wipe. for kernel i suggest semaphore kernel 2.9.15 or CyanCore Kernel v1.5 you can find this on http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665 development thread
For me i use XXJVU or XXJW4 for baseband/radio. BTW you can download the radio from here and flash from CWM.

I recommend this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075637
Follow instructions. You will be very satisfied.
You have to just flash another ROM and that will overwrite all your data (except on SD card).
I recommend you a Slim_Beam ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060374&highlight=slim+bean)
with Semaphore_JB kernel. It is fast and smooth but you can't overclock your phone on this kernel.

You're on the right track, SuperNexus 2 is fast, stable, and consumes least battery.
You do wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache. And do format /system before flashing the new Rom.
I recommend Mackay kernel, you can install via CWM in Recovery mode.
Device: GT-i9000
Rom: JB 4.2.2 Unofficial SuperNexus 2 by Aways
Kernel: Mackay 0.288 twrp
I switched to SuperNexus2 and it is really fast and smooth.

[Q] how to install paranoid 3.5 on stock JB N7000LSZ

Hello everyone, i am new in the forum. I want to install the new paranoid 3.5 on my n7000 with stock JB rom (N7000XXSLZ). My question is if i can flash the hydracore kernel v7 using directly PC Odin without risk hard brick or yellow triangle. Then my idea is to flash the paranoid rom from CWM how can i proceed?
Tanks to all
Check if hydracore kernel can be flashed on JB ROMs on the thread of the kernel. If it is compatible with stock JB ROMs you can safely flash it without any risks. After that you enter the recovery and install the .zip file of PA 3.5
