[Q] flexibility in default call handling - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, I am using cm-10.0 with my Samsung Galaxy i9000. I am living outside my home country, so I use Skype for all international call back home country and normal phone call to local numbers.
I know, there is option to make phone or Skype as default call handler. but what I need is when I call international number, Skype should handle it and when I make a local call my phone should handle it. I know, its difficult, but is there any way or app which will let me do this. currently when I get a call from home and i need to make international calls I open skype and make a call. but if somehow I get this going I can just reply it back from log and Skype will take it.

Live in the US? Want free phone calls?

You're in luck. Through a three step process, you can make VoIP calls to real, legit US numbers (not VoIP provider to provider, like Skype). It involves Google Voice, Gizmo5, and Fring.
Like many others, I thought Google Voice was going to be an app that would utilize VoIP. I was wrong and ended up spending $10 USD on GV Dialer (an app that utilizes Google Voice on my TyTN II).
Google Voice dials YOUR cellphone number when forwarding calls, and GV Dialer uses YOUR cellphone minutes whenever you make a call, thereby making any usefulness of Google Voice null.
That's where you're in luck. Recently Gizmo5 (a VoIP company) began utilizing Google Voice to make free calls anywhere in the US through their services, and with Fring you would be able to use your Google Voice account on YOUR TyTN II via VoIP!
First, get your invite here: https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/
After you have your invite, choose your Google number and go through all the settings to get your Google Voice account up and running.
Next, sign up for an account at: www.gizmoproject.com/ by going to "Member Sign in" and registering under the "Free Sign Up!" option.
Configuring Google Voice to Gizmo5 is the easiest part. Just simply go to the FIRST option as soon as you sign into Gizmo5 (you really can't miss it - it's the first page you log into after registering) and you will find "Google Voice Beta." Just simply enter your Google Voice/Gmail account information (they are reliable) and Viola! You have your SIP settings configured. Now all you need is Fring to start using your newly configured SIP settings.
Simply choose how you want to download Fring at: http://www.fring.com/download/ and then install it on your phone. After which you will start Fring up, then choose "SIP -> Gizmo5 -> Enter your Gizmo5 account information."
The go to the option of "Contacts" (I believe that's it, it might be "Call") and call anyone from your contacts list.
Downside is, currently WinMo cannot call anyone not in the contact list running Fring 3.34. While other platforms can, this support is not yet available for WinMo.
However, if you would like to use different SIP application on your phone (like me), just PM me and I'll help set you up, although Google Voice and Gizmo5 are still necessary.
hehe sounds nice, maybe works for int calls to usa no?, will try soon
if i use this thing would it mean i dont need a service provider anymore?
As long as you have WiFi, you won't need a service provider. I wouldn't suggest dropping your current provider, just cutting down on minutes if you really plan on utilizing this.
A couple programs to look into (they are shareware, unlike Fring) would be "Express Talk" and "AGEphone Mobile" if you don't mind spending some money (I don't see why you would if you're looking here to make free phone calls).
But at least you know some programs now.
Timed Calls?
OK, I tried this process of connecting to google voice through Gizmo with fring. The instructions were great and the call quality was better than I expected. However, in the middle of the call it said, "you have 20 seconds remaing" and then proceeded to shut down the call. So, am I right, that you only get to call for 3 minutes at a time for free? I am sure there is a package you can buy, but for free it looks like it is only 3 minutes at a time.
3 min max is true from what I see
It says on the Gizmo page when logging in that the calls are limited to 3 min. each so that is a real bummer. Google voice is cool though I might start using this. As well this could cut down on my minute usage and save me some money. The call seemed a little muffled on my end but the receiver said it sounds clear as a bell.
Fun little deal. I think it's cool and every little bit helps in cutting costs.
anyone know if this would work for calls made outside the US? going on a cruise and looking for a way to call home.
3 min calls are good if you have a voip with unlimited incoming you could call someone and have them call you back.1 question tho how many of those 3 min calls do you get? i got a number through ipkall and a sip through vokalot so i get unlimited incoming calls but no outgoing except 1800 numbers so that work to my advantage while my phones service is off.

Google Voice Ringtones

I have Google Voice on my G1, and I'm wondering if there is a way to use a different ringtone for incoming calls on my Google Voice number than from my regular phone number. I've looked around the options but can't find anything as of yet.
Am I missing something and the option is sitting there right in front of my face, or is it just not implemented yet to be able to change the ringtone?

Add your Google Voice number as a contact (I starred mine).
Then assign that contact a different ring tone.
done!

It still didn't work for me :/
The Google Voice number does not call my phone, it simply forwards the calls to my number when people call my GV number. So, say I call my GV number with my house phone, my G1 would display the incoming number as my house number and not change the ringtone to the GV one.

What you need to go is go to settings on GV and change "Caller Id" to display my gv number. That way you get free calls i mean your gv will be calling you. But make sure to put on call screening.

Thank you, that worked. Guess it was a GV issue and not a G1 issue, my bad.
Do you know who is calling you then when someone calls your gvoice number?
You would only know who is calling if you setup GV call screening, so the caller has to announce their name, and you press '1' to accept the call.
With GV passing through the original CID, I don't believe there is any way to set a different ringtone, as your phone isn't going to know the difference. If you use the third party GrooveIP, to send the GV call over IP instead of voice, there may be some other options.

How exactly do I get to the settings of GV to change the Caller ID? I cannot figure out where that setting is. Google again has a great service, but very poor direction or obscure directions on how to implement features. Please help me. Thank you very much.

Call Blocker Program?

What is the best call blocking program for the aria? It needs to have a whitelist to only allow people I specify to reach me. Thanks in advanced
Not exactly a direct solution on the Aria, but doesn't Google Voice allow you to filter calls? Again, I don't know about blocking.. but at the very least you can direct calls you don't want directly to voicemail.
i actually found this option today while going through my contacts. if you actually choose a contact and view his/her contact information. there is a menu down option to automatically send that person to voicemail whenever they call. i've already set a few to that option, but have yet to test it.

I tested it today, works GREAT!!! the phone doesn't even ring they just go right to VM
i use an app called Driodblock. there is a feature in it that tells you to block all calls except for your contacts (under scene mode). i think that is what you are looking for
i use it to block telemarketers or any unknown calls, which is what it's useful for. it does however tell you that the person called, but you dont hear the ring or anything, it goes straight to voicemail. you can also set it up so that that person gets hung up on so they dont get vmail LOL
the only problem is that if you search for droidblock in the market app, it doesnt show up. you have to search under "block calls" and it'll show up.
Yep, the two best ones are made by the same company:
Root Call Blocker (for general use):
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.rootcallblocker.beta
Call Master (for advanced users):
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.blacklist
These are the only blockers that completely block everything without turning the screen on. Need to be rooted though.
I use the option under contacts if it's someone I would rather leave a voicemail than talk to.
I use an app called call filter for numbers where the caller id is unknown. It has additional options for blocking specific numbers, but I've never needed it.
I've registered my phone numbers on the national do not call registry. I don't get telemarketing calls. If I ever do receive one, I will go to that same site and report the number. I've only received two telemarketing calls in the past 4 years having my number registered there.
You could use blocking apps to help you
Some apps on the Google Play provide you esay ways to block the unwanted calls.
Such as WhosCall, Call Blcoker ,Mr Number, Caller ID and so on.
You could try it. But don't install all of them at once since it would make your phone slow.
I usually use WhosCall which can search the strange phone number and provide a easy way to block them.
Hope it could help you.
We make the two best ones - root call blocker and call master. Both in my sig. Enjoy.

Free VOIP Calls using Google Voice and Gingerbread (Android 2.3)

Hi Please follow the instructions to the word. If this topic has been covered before, I apologize and I will delete it, if you let me know.
What you need.
1) HD2 running Gingerbread 2.3
2) Google Voice Account which is running on your phone. You have to be logged on.
Steps :
1) Download sipdroid from market
2) open sipdroid and you will see at the bottom, link to pbxes (not the exact words but you get the picture). Tap that
It Opens a box which already has your Google account in it.
3) Enter you google password (yes google password..no way around it)
4) follow the steps. Your ipbex account will be created and Gv trunk will be added. (You will not see any of this but this is a background process)
5) After a few minutes it is back on the home screen of sipdroid and you will see a green dot on the task bar.
Now is the important part :
6) Hit menu on sipdroid.
7) Once the menu screen is up , hit menu again and hit export.
8) Close sip droid.
9) Open file explorer and goto sipdroid folder on Sd card
10) Copy the file to your computer/ email it or whatever you like.
11) Open the the file with notepad
12)Look for user name and password and note it down. password is case sensitive.
13) domain is pbxes.org
14) Almost done. Got to your android settings and go into call settings.
15) Add new account for internet calls. put in the login and password and server.
16) Additional settings..change port to 5061
17) hit back button. and the account will be authenticated. check the receive calls box. Hit back button.
18) Use the options based on your choice. For me it is ask everytime I make a call so it pops up if I want to make call via internet or cellular network. Use your own preference. I dont have data plan and only wifi.. your situation might be different.
19) In google voice settings, turn off use for calls
20) Start calling and all outgoing calling will go over your internet connection if you so choose and using your GV number.
21. Uninstall sipdroid
is it 2.3 only or 2.3.x?
any gingerbread version should be ok. SIP calling is integrated into the OS
ok next question sorry for sounding like a pain in the as but does it work for international calls?
GV gives you credit for international calls ie calls that originate in the US and terminate in a different country. Now if you have a US GV number, yes GV will charge for international but US to US is free. However if you are visiting a foreign country and want to call back home to the US then it is free as you already have a US GV number.
I have to clarify this. If the GV setting on your phone is set to use for calls, the calls will be handed over to your cellular network..word of caution
oo ok thanks, i appreciate the clarity
Does this only work in the US or can we use it in other country's?
I am not sure if Google voice gives you non US numbers. That is something you need to check in your home country
This is pretty cool, thanks.
Outgoing calls work great but is this supposed to work for incoming as well?
If so, how is it configured?
I have my GV number forwarding to Google Chat but I just get a voice attendant that tells me "The person at extension 200 is on the phone".
Yes it should work for incoming as well as long as the caller calls you on the GV number and the Internet calls settings on your are set to receive incoming calls. It would be helpful if some folks on here reported on the call quality
I have checked the receive calls box and I am calling my GV number and my GV number is set to forward to Google Chat but I just get the message saying I'm on the phone.
It's probably related to GrooVeIP which I sometimes use. I've had some problems like this before where GrooVeIP sort of grabs onto the Google Chat forward and won't let go, even if it isn't running or is uninstalled.

Dial / DTMF tones during a call not being played - Samsung say it's not a feature!

Use Case:
1. Call a conference call number eg: WebEx
2. You are asked to enter the meeting number
3. You press the numbers but no tones are played
Had a tech support call with Samsung just now.
Firstly they say this isn't a feature on EU Note 8s (WTF!)
Then say it should work out of the box and my phone is faulty so take it to a Samsung centre for evaluation / exchange
I reckon this is a software bug. Can someone else in the EU dial any number and when you're connected to the call, press a number on the dial pad and tell me if you hear the tone played?
Im not in EU, but in the states it works fine, i have many conference calls daily and it always works for me entering my codes to get into the call. It should be working fine on your model as well, possible a issue with the carrier side of things or its turned off in the hidden settings.
Edit:
Try ##DATA#, if it brings up a menu, put in 000000 as your msl, then go to More, then go to DTMF SET. See if its off or not set at all? US model has a option here for this at least.
Hi
The ##2832# doesn't work on my phone. It's a real pig seeing as I work remotely!
Don't even seem to be able to use a 3rd party DTMF tone generator either (well I can but the system at the other end isn't hearing the tones).

I have a Galaxy N950N and I have this same issue. Did you ever get this working? I can't seem to find a secret service menu to enable it, and I know I'm doing something wrong here.
Hi
Not specifically a fix but the only place I'm having issues with is WebEx. If you try your voicemail, does that work ok? Mine is fine but for some reason WebEx isn't

Mine doesn't work across the board, irrespective of voicemail or other conference call. No dial tone is played in-call when you press the dial pad.

Figured it out. It's the CSC. Apparently, it doesn't work properly with the N950N (at the least the one I had installed, which was default with the Renovate ROM). I had to use the Flashable CSC Selection V1.2.5 from Tkkg1994, manually add the greatlte line into it, and once flashed, I got all the options in the dialer for TTY (I think which relates to DTMF), and most importantly, sound feedback when pressing the dialpad while in-call.
Solution
Go to settings -> sound and vibration -> uncheck the the dialling keypad tones(if checked).
Hope this helps!
this works. Go figure... you disable the dialling keypad tones and you can now use the keypad tones. Thanks for the help. This has infuriated me for months
I had not payed any attention to this, as I used some services that require you to input numeric options during call, and all worked fine, but, yes, no tones heard, but the tones are sent anyway
What worked for me was dialing the original number manually - not from the phone memory or contacts!
I use a Gigaset HC450 Doorbell that is able to divert a call.
This is a rare device, check ebay, it is a DECT phone on a Siemens Gigaset IP Base Station with a SIP provider configured)
So if someone presses the doorbell button on the Gigaset HC450 and status is set to AWAY
then the configured SIP provider inside the BASE station does an external call to my mobile because I set up my mobile number inside the HC450 Menu for Diversion
So my mobile is a Samsung Note 8, at the moment i run Stock Hungarian unbranded firmware N950F
When there is a call from the doorbell, there is a sentence said by a female voice: "Doorbell is ringing, to connect press 1, to stop press hash"
I cannot proceed by pressing 1, neither with Dialpad tones activated nor deactivated, and also a 3rd party DTMF tone generator does not work
Someone in this thread said it was fixed by flashing different CSC, which i think is not true because many said that they got webex fixed by simpy DEACTIVATING dialpad tones
I am greatful for all ideas that you have in order to get this working, its a new challange and I found this thread so I posted my topic here, too
Thank you very much for reading
