Is it possible using my regular cell phone number (not google voice)?
I have a windows 8 phone as my phone if that makes a difference. Thanks.

uf, theres a 100 threads about this.
Search for whatsapp, tablet talk, viber threads, theres ongoing discussions going on. However, I think you require an android phone to make them work, but I'm not sure.
Which I why I made this thread...I don't have an android phone.
Cloud sms does exactly what you want

My main phone is a windows phone. We need to install that app on both the tablet and phone to get it to work. Windows phone doesn't have that app.

You can use Desk sms.. its by clockworkmod. I think it will do what your asking.. Google voice will as well. Setup google voice on your desktop computer.. Have your test forworded to your google voice number. Then on your tablet you can send and receive text with google voice.. .Other sms apps will also pick up google voice text...

from what i've read, the possibilities are currently limited. you can receive MMS thru Google Voice if the sender is on Sprint. (it will be viewable in your email). they are working on getting more carriers on-board, maybe someone knows of any other options...?
question about cloud sms, does it work even if your phone is off? my phone's charger usb port is broken and its a pain trying to get it to charge. im still paying of my phone plan.

It does work perfectly but it's odd that it's filtered out of the Market. You still have to side load it.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
can someone post a 3.1 friendly apk here for us then ?
danka
where are you downloading the apk from??
I just downloaded it to my phone and grabbed it for my xoom.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
so your saying google voice installs as long as we sideload it?
This doesn't surprise me, since the issue with Google Voice was the same issue as the Facebook Widget and that works too.
It seems Google relaxed the API a bit with regards to null intents
I just back it up to my drop box.. here's the link if you want to download it

so i thought i would be able to get msg's on my tablet and my phone but when i setup my sprint number with gvoice i stop getting msg's on my phone and only get them on gvoice on the tablet
you can also get apps directly on your xoom by downloading from amazon app store. there's a ton of apps that work fine but missing from the market. and you don't have to go through putting the app on your phone then moving to your xoom, and you will get updates.
Yeah, found this out last week. Unfortunately, push notifications are STILL not enabled (you still have to select a polling interval).

I figured 15mins was the best compromise.
One thing I did was change my Voice Notification E-mail from my default account to my GMail account, which means I at least get instantaneous notifications, but even still that's a hack.
FFS Google- you can't make this whole?!
Confirmed. It works perfectly. Thanks for the heads up.

Umm' stupid question I'm sure but here goes...
If I install the voice from your dropbox does it replace the Google voice on the xoom? As in no more video calls, or does this just add capability to use the calling features? I'm so confused..

Yes I am. Might be the polling interval but I uninstalled it until there is a fix or an official release
So it looks like I'm getting myself an N7 as my first Android device. I'm coming from using an iPad and it's built in messaging app to communicate with my wife and son via their iPods over wifi. What messaging app would you recommend we switch to once I have my N7 in hand?
Good question I'd like to know as well. Is there any way to send/recieve SMS texts from the wifi only N7?
Tablet talk? Use your N7 like your phone.

I recomend GTalk , everybody has a google (gmail) account nowadays.

I use Google Voice for SMS messages and Google Talk for chat.

Google voice for sms/ add grove ip to that and get full phone functions .
Tablet talk if you want to relay text and calls to and from your tablet thru your phone..
there is also tab text .. sync sms. and a few others out there..
IF your phone does not support tethering to do the above using your phone. You can try pda.net app from tablet.. I think it still works for most handset/tablet variations..

Agreed.
And more people should be using it.
A lot of people have an android phone and don't even know you can video or voice call using Gtalk.
Spread the word!
Pinger? U can text and call, but u need to buy minutes if u run out, or install free apps to get minutes.

I have a rooted/rommed wifi-only S1 and my GF has a Blackberry 9780. She is currently overseas for X amount of time and the only way we can talk is by calling each other which is extremely expensive, or using skype which means she has to borrow a friend's laptop or android device. She has service on her phone over there, unsure of what type of plan.
I came up with the idea of using my old BB 8330 and figuring out how to use BBM or something similar on wifi-only, but it turns out that 'ol phone doesn't have wifi on it. It's too bad I sold my last BB some time ago which was an 8530 and had wifi. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm now wondering if there's an app I can use on my S1 that she can also use on her 9780 that would allow us to text and or talk. Something like BBM that doesn't require me to have service or a data plan. I imagine there's at least one app out there that would do this and also be available to BB users.
Thanks.

I read somewhere that it uses your phone number but can't seem to confirm that.
I'm pretty sure we can use KIK but it's text only. I may be getting greedy with wanting text and talk, but having both would be awesome.
Does her phone have a browser? If so, you could use any site like ebuddy to talk. Or even get on something like palringo (dunno if there's a bb version?) but there must be something alike.

She has service and we *think* her data is unlimited. She also has a wireless router at her flat so wifi helps if the data is limited/costly.
We're trying to use apps over our current methods or using something browser based mainly for convenience. Something like whatsapp or KIK would work perfectly from what I understand, but they're text-only. Not a huge problem, but if I can find text+voice that would be great. Skype is normally the answer to that question but her phone, or more specifically her service provider, isn't compatible with skype from what I'm seeing.

I went with Kik for now. It's actually a pretty cool messenger app. Clean and fast.
I haven't yet found anything that covers both messages and voice in app form other than skype which I confirmed is not compatible with her model of phone.

Preferring to stay away from browser since apps are far more convenient and because browsers always run very sluggish on my cappy for some reason.

Should hassle Ebuddy to make a app then lol
But if you wanna try it, there's a bare naked browser (ugly but fasssst) on here. Called naked browser I believe.

Looks like the exact app I need and it's compatible with blackberry. Will give it a try. Thanks!
ETA: Looks like Blackberry devices can not use the VoIP feature yet but they say it will be available eventually.
Turns out you need a number for viber and my device is wifi-only. After some research I found that you can use any phone number that can receive SMS because it's for them to send you a registration PIN. I tried both my GV and Heywire numbers and haven't received that text on either one. :\

Watch doesn't directly connect to the cloud (or your cal in this case), it will report whatever the phone you pair it too is sync with, if you want to change it, you need to change it on your phone

If you have multiples calendar sync to one app (let's say google Cal) I don;t think there is way to select which Cal to display, now if you have multiples Cal App you can use the Android Wear Companion App to mute all other Cal notification and leave only the one you want to see

+1 for pushbullet
Only thing to watch out for with pushbullet is that the last time I used it, it broke MMS on my phone.
May or may not be fixed. But if you start having MMS issues after installing PushBullet... that's the first thing I'd uninstall to troubleshoot.
