Add support for 4G LTE and extra 32GB storage - Nexus 4 General

Ok guys, now this method isn't for everyone. And could prove expensive for some, but it is something I have been running recently so that I have fast net whilst on the move with my gadgets.
I currently have a One X and waiting for my Nexus 4 and I have recently been carrying my Samsung portable 4g hotspot with me while I am out and about (I usually always have a rucksack with me so carrying the hotspot isn't a big problem - and has quite a wide radius when I don't have it on my person).
And while my phone is connected, via Wi-Fi to the hotspot, I also have better battery life with my phone I intend on using the same method once I get the Nexus 4, as we dont have Band 4 AWS LTE here in Denmark.
I'll be upgrading to this new hotspot shortly: The Huawei E589 - Mainly because it has improved battery life, 3000mah compared to the 1650mah I have on the Samsung hotspot at current. This should allow me to simply leave the hotspot on the whole day without having to worry too much about the battery dying. The hotspot also has an micro sd lot, allowing support for upto 32gb - which I can access over the Wi-Fi network. No need for USB OTG here or a portable wifi hard-drive, it's all embedded into the hotspot. :good:

The issue for some, is the price, having an extra 4G plan, could be costly, especially for our American, British(I say British, but I mean Londoners given the poor coverage of EE) and Canadian brothers on the forum, but here in DK - a 4G plan, is not so expensive in my opinion - about 250DKK / £25GBP / $40USD for 20GB data a month.
Maybe it's an option for some who desperately need 4G LTE and improved storage options? It works for me, it might work for you

I want 20gb of data for $40. :banghead:

Well in germany we have LTE with 4GB/month max. for 90€ :crying:
Cheaper options are limited to 600MB/month...

In the UK our 'cheap' plan is 500MB/month - for £36!
LTE is an expensive luxury here - especially with Three & O2 rolling out DC-HSPA+ for no extra cost - LTE is better, but it's not worth 4 times the price.

It just launched to be fair and EE are taking advantage of the monopoly until next year when the other networks can offer 4G - hopefully that'll mean more competitive prices as I'm in the UK a fair bit myself so would be good with a cheaper alternative to EE. Hoping that Giffgaff can offer a good deal when O2 gets 4g!
I knew data was expensive but didn't realise it was so expensive I some parts of the globe! Count ourselves very lucky here in Denmark

A quick search shows that verizon using 700mhz spectrum for their LTE, so the one I suggest in my post will not work but this one will:
http://www.4gsource.net/3g-4g-route...hspa-42mbps/sierra-wireless-aircard-754s.html
When looking for a hotspot, make sure that it has support for for 700mhz in order for it to work on verizon

That's not the point. Voice/txt on non lte networks is not an issue. It's the slower internet that is the issue.

I actually have the AT&T $50 Everything Unlimited since in my area it works pretty good (700kbps at night and 3500kbps during the day). I modified the APN and i get tethering as well, within 3 days i hit 4GB and now im past 15GB and i haven't noticed a problem!

I'm on the $30 T-mobile plan. Unlimited data, text, 100 min. I hardly call anyone so it's not a big deal. Data speeds are hit and miss in my area. Still need to test it out some more. At home I have Wi-Fi so it's not so bad. Saving 60 dollars a month over Sprint for basically the same service so I can take any negatives there may be.

I went with Solavei ($49 Unlimited, 4GB). With WiFi screwed as it is, I required a higher data plan to keep the phone from borking the rest of the network. The price is in line with the plan and if I happen to turn a few people onto the service the cost can be offset to a better bang for the buck. The service is great (T-Mobile) and the community is kind and helpful.
Shouldn't this be in Nexus 4 General ?

I'm on AT&T for the time being. Once I'm off contract I'm planning on switching over to T-Mobile. I need to grab a pre-paid sim to test, but from the coverage maps and tower locations, T-Mobile reception should actually be strong enough at my house to get rid of the microcell I have to make AT&T work. I've been on AT&T forever, but I'm finally starting to get sick of the reception and performance problems I have. Not to mention that T-Mobile is cheeper since they dropped the subsidy cost out of the subscription.
I'm running H2O Wireless which is an AT&T MVNO. $50 a month for unlimited talk/text but 500MB data which is more than I need really. I don't stream youtube while on the train as to me that's retarded . (I barely watch anything on YouTube anyways). I also get $20 of international calling included too and it applies as GF is in Germany so get to call her for free is nice (she can call the US for free too).
I'm thinking to switch to StraightTalk AT&T only because they have more data anyways even though I don't need it. Last month during Hurricane Sandy I used it up like hell! UPS battery finally got a work out after having it for almost 2yrs. Gotta check out if they have international calls too (AFAIK the same company owns them all, Locus Communications).
T mobile $30 prepaid (100 voice, unlimited text/data) convert from Sprint SERO-P customer. Saving $30 per month, no contracts, usable 4g speeds and GSM data access during calls.
Wish I had switched sooner!

Which Carrier will you use your Nexus 5 with?

Simple question: Which carrier will you use with your new Nexus 5? Since it is unlocked and works on Sprint/Tmo & AT&T, it gives us major free choice to pick the carrier we want.
If you are on a prepaid or MVNO type network, just pick the host network that your MVNO runs off of.
Currently using it on AT&T.

And what "Other" carrier are people using? (Must be people not in the US, sorry I didnt think of that)
Mine will be in today, have a straight talk AT&T sim and card sitting, waiting. Hoping data works with some reported issues of AT&T and the nexus 5 not having the right IMEI for their network or something.
I also got a free tmobile micro and nano sim when they were on sale the other day as a backup plan.
I was with Sprint who always has had great coverage anywhere I've gone.
That said, I'm going to try to have $600/yr by switching to TMobile.
Might add Skype if I go over minutes too much.

I'm currently activated on the $45 straight talk plan because last month I used 2300 minutes talking to a special someone, if I find an alternative voip that is as convenient as the dialer I'd definitely do the 5 GB $30 plan. Just ran a speedtest at home using 3G and got 1.72 Mbps down and .91 up, waiting on LTE to show up again here and will run it again. At my home LTE is not officially launched yet but I get a signal in my area sometimes, but when at work in NYC I always get the LTE signal.
Edit: Just turned airplane mode on and off and a small LTE signal popped back up, ran a speedtest and got 1.12Mbps down and .26 up. Up got up to 1.6 but then kinda froze and went down to .26.
I hope when I get my SIM from Sprint international dept that it will fix this horrific LTE speed, right now I am using a SIM from an S4. I know it is supposed to be the same SIM or at least in theory be the same SIM but one can dream right.
Edit again: Changed priorities of the LTE bands as suggested by someone here on XDA and ran a speedtest again, this time got 2.53 down and .49 up in my home where LTE is not officially launched. I am on band 25 though so no spark, just the standard vision LTE band. I pray that maybe tomorrow my LTE will get to normal, some people have said it takes like three days to get it fully working.

Do you notice a huge variance over small distances with AT$T? I'm in IE on T-mobile and get mid 20's with HSPA+ near UCR, but other areas I get under 1. I had T-Mobile until August because I couldn't stand the slow speeds. I've been happy and amazed at AT&T's LTE.

AT&T reports my Nexus 5 as "LG 821"

I thought this was kind of interesting...
I bought my Nexus 5 from Tmobile (north america), found out that I have very little (read: zero) coverage between my home and work, so I had to cancel. I went ahead and paid off the N5 and switched to AT&T.
Oddly enough, the myAT&T screen shows me as having a LG 821, which, I believe, is the international version!
I found that concerning as I thought Tmobile might have worked better for me if I had the correct phone... but my bootloader shows D820.
Anyone else have the same quark on their myAT&T page?

My wife and I both have Nexus 5's on at&t. I bought her's from google and mine from tmobile. Ours both show 821 too, but they are 820's. If they were 821's, you would have no LTE. Im in atlanta with lte everywhere.
LG 821 too, bought it from the Google store. I can use the wap.cingular apn only. No LTE for me.
LG821 here as well. I have LTE using attphone APN. I had a Galaxy S4 (LTE) before it, just kept that plan so it all works. Have to have had a LTE capable phone before you get the N5 for it to work properly with your plan to access LTE>

Do any of you get throttled on AT&T with the Nexus 5? I have the Galaxy Nexus, but a cracked screen and now water damage is making me purchase a new phone, and I have yet to be throttled while regularly using over 5G/month.
Thanks!
You only get throttled (or more accurately, your usage is only metered in the throttling system) when using PHONE or PTA apn. Using a galaxy nexus without lte, you're most likely on wap.cingular (which you can do on a phone with no lte). Once their system detects you're imei and determines you have an lte capable device, you're blocked from using wap.cingular, and this your usage will be monitored (as you'll need to use phone or pta). I can trick the system by putting my sim in my old non lte GS2 (i9100), doing "restore apns" then sim swapping back to my nexus 5. THEN I can use wap.cingular, but unfortunately after a day or two they do an imei sweep and I get locked out again On the bright side tmo just announced they'll be eliminating edge and upgrading everything to lte by 2015 so I'm looking forward to dumping ATT very soon.

No throttle. On 6gb family share plan now. I can get over 50mbit/s in SpeedTest with full LTE signal. 95% of the time I'm on WiFi so to boot LTE speeds don't really matter. My data usage last month was a whole 500mb.
Not sure if the International has a different structure for the ESN/IMEI but its quite possible the 821 is what they have in their system as the Nexus 5. They do have traveling customers on the device but more likely prepaid customers. Interesting one indeed.

He's asking about the UNLIMITED plan being throttled I'm sure, and yes it will after 5gb, unless you're on the wap.cingular apn as I described above.
I should mention that the Nexus 4 will NOT be blocked from wap.cingular as it does not have LTE, so if true unlimited data is that important maybe the Nexus 4 might be a better choice.

Should be 5gb on an LTE device. I'd call in with your imei to get put on an LTE unlimited plan if you're not already (hspa plans throttle after 3gb.). Note that you don't need to be on LTE or even have an LTE device, you just need any att compatible imei to give them so you're on the right plan.

I got mine from Google, it's the unlocked version, and AT&T is also saying it's an LG 821.
How Do I Check The Model Number?
Hi,
Bought my phone from Google Play. How do I check the model number other then the boot loader?
I checked in 'About Phone', can't find it.
Edit. XDA really has to stop ads from playing with audio with while on the site, drives me nuts.
I tried to use the phone on PTA or Phone APN but it only accepts wap.cingular, because I switched from a 3G phone. The CS rep said my plan is not compatible with LTE, and nothing can be done. I am stuck with HSPA. Oh well, the plus side, I am not throttled.

LG821 here as well. I have LTE using attphone APN. I had a Galaxy S4 (LTE) before it, just kept that plan so it all works. Have to have had a LTE capable phone before you get the N5 for it to work properly with your plan to access LTE>

This is not true. My wife has a T-Mobile N5 and I have a play store N5. Just started ATT service yesterday and we both have LTE. Also both devices show up as LG 821.

This is true in some cases. It depends on the person that sets your phone up. Search. When they provision the phone, some AT&T workers, since the Nexus 5 is officially not in their provisioning software, have to select a generic template. If they are smart and do the right thing, you get set up with a LTE capable provisioning for your phone that works perfect. Some however don't know what they are doing and set the phone up with a plan that cannot access 3G for whatever reason. It completely depends on the person provisioning your phone. With phones that are in AT&T's system that might be unlocked but are in their system, such as Galaxy S4 Google Edition or something, it works no problem since the S4 is in their system. However with "oddball" phones like ours that AT&T doesn't officially support you run into issues as some workers may not know how to handle them.

Slow LTE speeds?

So I'm new to tmobile (3rd day on the network), I'm coming from verizon. I'm trying to figure out why in my home I get miserable LTE speeds, despite having full LTE signal. Just down the road I get speeds close to 60 down so I know this isn't standard speeds...
I'm in Columbus, Ohio. Still well within my 14 day trial so I'm putting my phone to the test to make sure I really want to stay with tmobile. I should note that I didn't have consistent LTE, especially not full signal, until I installed the LTE signal booster.

Same here. Lte but feels pretty slow
Also came from verizon (was a vzw corp employee for 10 yrs in phx) and switched to t-mo, at home i get full LTE bars, but speeds remain slower than AWS speeds we keep seeing in atlanta and NYC from t-mo.
I get 12, the best i ever got was 22mbps
Tforce is looking into my issue. I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with my local tower. It doesn't matter if I'm inside or out, I can have full lte signal and get speeds ranging from .50 to 5. Really frustrating but even if I don't see improved speeds I'll probably stick with them, I miss unlimited data that much.

A signal Booster will not give you faster speeds, and having full signal does not necessarily mean you should be getting high speeds.

Then what exactly would be the point of a signal booster and showing a signal? Tforce seemed to think it was an issue...

Reception. It can help with calls, but higher signal does not mean better data speeds. I've been able to put over 20 down with 1 or 2 bars. Then only 8 with 3-5 bars. There's more to it. T-mobile can look into it and see if there are other factors involved. Also make sure you are on latest firmware

I understand that but .50 mbps download speed, sometimes less, with ANY LTE signal, isn't acceptable. If that's the towers speed of LTE then they might as well drop that signal and let me run off 4g.

Right there's no doubt something is wrong, just saying that bars won't make a difference. You can run off 4g if you select it, is your speed better?

It's sometimes better, sometimes right around the same speed. It's so weird because every once in a while I'll actually get decent lte speeds.. Although it's very rare... For now I have just given up worrying about it until I hear from tforce, my WiFi is more than fast enough (what I was using with Verizon anyway since I didn't have unlimited). I just would like to stay on lte at all times, just a preference of mine. I work today, first time since switching over, so hopefully I don't have issues there and I'll probably stay with T-Mobile. As long as calls work at home I can live with running off my WiFi.

Signal bars nowadays don't necessarily mean that's the Data strength. That would be your voice signal strength on that particular device no longer meaning that is the signal strength for that data type.

I'm actually beginning to wonder if it's the phone. I was at a local chipotle and tested inside the store and was getting the dreaded .10.. I restarted and tested again and was getting 50mbps.. Pretty significant difference needless to say lol.

If you could get a hold of another T-Mobile device or someone you know that has T-Mobile, you should compare or ask for their experience

I don't know anyone else that has it but I am thinking about throwing my sim in my wife's Verizon iPhone and testing it.

Didn't change anything, still same slow speeds.

Could be your sim. Although I personally have noticed here in South Florida places where I used to get 60+ down now I'm getting 25 or 30. I noticed this since I switched from my note 4 to my s6

Tforce made a notation on my account so I can go replace my sim at a store. Gonna give it a go tomorrow.

the problem is band 12 it only has 5mhz of bandwidth i turned it off with *#2263# menu to only band 4 and speeds went from 2/6 to 20/14
But that’s just me it really depends on the area you live in
