hello all. I just started diving into the world of rooting (and android for that matter) with a friends old captivate. In the process of installing Jelly bean, I messed things up pretty bad.
I had a corn kernel installed (which I later found out wasnt usable for CM10) and when I then found a devil kernal to use, i found myself getting stuck in a boot loop. Trying to get out of it, I flashed back (using odin) to the corn kernel, which then get stuck on the boot screen with the loading bar at 100%. I then flashed around to a few different kernels i had downloaded in the process of trying to figure all of this out and now I cannot get the phone to boot back into the OS.
What should I do?? Where can I find the proper kernels for CM10 (everything I follow is always dead)? and most importantly, how can I get this phone back up and running. This forum seems to be filled with all sorts of smart people, so hopefully we can figure out a solution quickly.
Thanks
With Cornkernel 705 installed I can access the CWM5 recovery screen if that makes a difference

If you can get in cwm, factory reset and re-flash CM10 (as per their process). CM10 will flash with it's own kernel so you don't have to bother with flashing a kernel after.
If that doesn't work, get stock KK4 and flash with Odin (or Heimdall). Then flash Corn kernel with Odin 1.85 and finaly flash your ROM.

Well, when I get into CWM since i'm running corn, I cannot locate CM10. Flashing back to stock didnt even allow me to reboot into the phone either.

Just logged back into CwM to try to do this and after I mount the SD, I still cannot find any option for CM10 and I am positive it is still on the card.

Mount the SD card to your PC to make sure it's still there, is what I meant.
well since Im really impatient, I ended up using Odin3 one-click downloader which allowed me to revert back to eclair. phone is working and I plan on starting back to getting CM10 running. Which kernel do you suggest I flash for that?

Probably a good idea to clean flash anyway.
Corn is the kernel you'll want to get root.

Yeah, but from what I've read and experienced, Corn cannot be used for CM10 purposes. After flashing to corn using odin (I can both 705 and 706 saved on my computer) there is no option in CwM to install CM10. I read that corn isnt able to boot CM10, but maybe I read something wrong. We're getting off topic for the post, but i'm sure others are having the same problem

Maybe I'm missing something here but I'm not sure I understand.. The usual process to flashing looks like this (as you probably know):
Odin KK4 stock
Odin 1.85 corn kernel
Flash your ROM through cwm as per their instructions
Flash Gapps
Enjoy
Corn will give you root and from there, you should be able to go get your CM10.zip that is on your internal SD and flash it.
Corn will be wiped as you flash CM10 cause it flashes it's own kernel so it is only to get root when you're on stock.

That's why I said to mount your SD to your PC, make sure where you've put them (in which folder) and also make sure they're actually on it. The kernel won't hide files.. eh
If you wanna make it easy, create a folder for them (and of course, move them in). Folder: CM10. That way you won't be searching all through your phone for them.
so I placed the CM10 in the root of the SD card. On Corn 706, im unable to locate it. I flashed over to Semaphore and was actually able to find the CM10 file, but for whatever reason, when I try to install it, it begins the process and then aborts it.
That would be the norm...just select to install the Rom again from that cwm recovery that pops up.

Wait.. When you flashed to stock, what Odin did you use?? There's a GB stock (KK4). If you flashed back with the old one click and you're back on eclair you probably don't have the GB bootloaders so you'll have to get them. Corn kernel is meant for GB, not eclair so would make sense if it doesn't work.
Well, I am currently sitting on CM9 with Semaphore. Phone is working, just need to find the correct Gapps, since thats where I store my contact info. I'll mess around with getting CM10 in a few days. I was tired of using my blackberry for the past two days while I have been trying to get this damn phone up and running. I'll do my research to ensure that I use the correct kernels and bootloaders. If you know of a guide for getting to CM10 from CM9, that would be great.

The instructions are in the CM10 thread. I believe they're quite basics, don't need to go back to stock.
Also, if I were you, I'd redownload CM10 ROM. Could be getting those errors from a bad download.

...and just a friendly fyi, if u get the Status 7 error again, when u try flashing to CM10 another day, it is because of the assert script in the updater-script, of what ur wanting to flash, is looking at what the build.prop says of ur phone. (that is even hard to type, lol...someone plz correct me if i'm wrong).
U can search and read up a little probably better than i could type and try to explain it. --- But in the end it is more of a fail safe so that u don't flash something that is not for ur phone.
It will be more clear once u read up on it a little.
The asserts can be edited/removed, build.prop edited, or u could use a different kernel, etc. --- several options as a work around to the error.

I've followed the instructions for installing speedmod kernel here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880
I installed the samsung usb drives, Odin was able to see the phone, and..yeah, did everything it said.
Installation takes less than five seconds, my phone reboots, then sits on the screen that says "Galaxy S SGH-I897" and never gets past that.
I know speedmod was installed for the most part, because when I go into recovery mode I now see options for both clockwork and speedmod. I also tried using a recovery image to get back to where I was before, but I get this error:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/st19 to /system with parameters auto llw.check=no
(File exists)
Can't mount /system/!
Any ideas?
I tried flashing many different versions of the speedmod kernel, but all of them result in the same problem.
Thanks.

I am able to boot into recovery mode that ClockworkMod originally made. I think I mentioned in my first post that I see that SpeedMod has made an extra selection item in it, but recovery mode cannot recover anything.
In addition, I have tried wiping all the cache, but that also didn't effect anything.
I also have no idea how much battery life I have left, and how I can charge my phone without it (potentially) burning out the screen.
Thanks for the help.
That kernel will never work with cm7. Several issues but most of all it can not handle the system partition. you should be able to flash the rom again if you can get into recovery, or flash stock start over

Alright. I'm able to get into recovery, which I assume means I can load up another CyanogenMod onto the SD card and hopefully be able to install it (the "cannot mount /system/" kinda worries me about that part). If I have to wipe everything and revert back to stock, that is perfectly fine...I have another phone that I can use in the meantime.
Thanks a lot for the help.
I should ask this now, which roms do support speedmod? Or should I look for another kernel (again, I'm pretty knew, I only know of these things from some people I know, but clearly there are a lot of options).

Any Froyo ROM if you want a GB rom check out the I9000 roms. (combine those with the talon kernal)
The reason speedmod wont work it that CM7 runs off of yaffs2 and speedmod runs off of ext4/rfs and, well, you should see the problem with that
And to fix it you will have to use either the JF6 or the haikaidos flash back to stock package.
So you can repartition.
Ive got a stock 2.2? froyo captivate and did the new [Guide] How To flash Captivate ROMs from Stock by TRusselo and when i go into recovery i cant access external sd. I put the latest nightly and gapps on the root of sd card and for some reason I cant see it? I did a clean wipe and everything. Is there something wrong that I'm doing. I've mounted everything and still nothing.
Read the instructions again INTERNAL SD not EXTERNAL and you can access it, browse sdcard to /external_sd folder, it takes you to your external sd.
you mounted what? why? dont.
BUT YOU CANT FLASH FROM EXTERNAL SD!!!!
thats why the instructions say INTERAL SD
So instead of downloading through the browser.....I'd like to move the new nightly and gapps on internal memory with a pc transfer....where would i put it in? so that CWM can see it? Thxs man. I appreciate it. noober here. htc aria was a breeze to root and flash custom roms, I'm not use to this puppy.
ANYWHERE internal sd in the root, or any folder (except external_sd)
what browser are you using? the stock brower downloads to sdcard/downloads not sdcard/external_sd/*whatever*
if you downloaded with stock browser it should be there... not in root. unless you moved it after.
Thanks so much..... I found the files I needed but when I try to flash nightly it gives me this craziness....what's going on! Thxs for the help though.
edit: Did a factory one click by odin.
seems like an error with the zip file. try a nightly from a day or two before.
The build prop doesn't match the built asserts in the Zip, they have to match for it to flash... what ROM are you currently on?
Sent from my I897 using xda premium
that would make scene by the error. hmm he said he went to stock odin one click...

Just clear ROM managers data and then flash the original Captivate CWM not MTD and the reboot into recovery... reinstall packages 2 times, and flash in CWM
Sent from my I897 using xda premium
Thanks for the fast reply. I bought ROM manager premium and will try it out. Install twice I guess to be on the safe side right? Thanks again. My wife hates my life right now being i've spent all day doing this. So i'm down to try anything on her cappy at this point.
Not "to be on the safe side"...the first time you choose reinstall packages in stock recovery it'll boot back into stock recovery, then reinstall packages again and it'll boot into cwm.
yeah thats a must do.
So i've cleared cache and selecting captivate recovery galaxy s 2.5.1.x booted into recovery ROM manger and did reinstall twice and got this.......I don't understand why i'm getting this.
Edit: I got it to work! I kept trying to go through the recovery from ROM manager after installing and it hung up a couple times. Then when selecting install packages with which I did it twice...it was in cwm 2.5.1.7. Installed nightly after full wipe a couple times and it boot looped. Then if I remember correctly I pulled battery booting into recovery, the 3 button way. it booted into Cwm 5.x.x.x. What the heck!!! That was a fun ride, why did it do this? Anyways, glad to join your guys community. you guys are awesome. Thanks buttons hit. changing first post and thread to.....solved.
When you flashed the nightly it contained a kernel with cwm 5 baked into it.
from what i have heard sometimes the cm install needs to be done twice.. too. i dunno dont mess with cm7
Sorry

From there, Get Corn kernel, which you'll flash with Odin 1.85 and finally, you can get back to your ROM.

Hey fellas,
So here's what I was trying to do...I was simply trying to revert back to a previous ROM that I had made a back up of. As I tried to load up the back up I got an error. Tried another back up...same thing. Tried to simply reboot my phone, stuck at the Samsung logo. I can get into recovery and I tried to use the USB mount to see if I could put a freshly downloaded ROM to try onto the phone, no dice (computer never saw the phone, best I can tell).
Am I screwed, or is this a simple matter of putting a ROM on through Odin to get me back on track? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Got it working again. Thanks for all your help, man!
great..
Today I tried to update my phone to a new custom rom.
I followed the instructions of the threads and tried to get it to work.
Of course it didn't work or else I wouldn't be here right now asking for help.
Here's the current situation.
I am able to boot into download mode + recovery mode and also boot into cwmr and install a different kernel.
I used pc odin to install it each time and it does pass and the rom (i've tried installing a gingerbread rom so that I can try everything again) does install.
the problem is that it is currently stuck in a boot loop at the "Samsung galaxy note gt-N7000" screen.
I have looked up dr.ketan's posts and tried some too.
currently i am booting abyss note kernel 42cwt touch original. (I know for sure it is a workable kernel because I've been using it this whole time.
here's what i've done. please tell me what i've done wrong and the possible ways to reverse it.
1. backed up everything
2. went into recovery
3. factory reset/cache clear
4. use pc odin to install new kernel (since I was looking into switching to another kernel anyways)
5. use pc odin again to install gingerbread rom (I do get the green light saying it did get installed
6. phone auto reboots
7. it gets stuck at the boot loop like i have mentioned above
i will try to attach a few pictures of my note as soon as I can so you can see what's going on with it.

Right now it reboots to 3e recovery.
The rom that I tried to inject to it is currently a the stock gingerbread rom from dr. Ketans thread.
The rom that I had on it is the official ics rom for the hk region.
The rom that I wanted to inject to it was a custom jb rom that uses hydracore as a kernel.

Well I am not sure but I soft bricked my phone when I tried that Abyss Kernel. In my view Hydracore is safe. Philz is super safe.
Flash ICS which matches your region using Odin. If phone boots flash Philz, If not, then be ready to read a lot of stuff or get phone repaired.

I currently flashed the abyss note kernel 42 cw touch and I downloaded an old gb rom from sammobile .
Here's what I did.
1. Put my phone into download mode
2. Run as admin on PC Odin
3. Selected the Abyss kernel then flashed it.
4. Boot into the cmw, wiped cache then booted the phone into download mode again.
5. Then I installed the old GB Rom on to my phone and restarted it.
6. Phone starts, loads past the GT-N7000 logo and goes into the samsung boot logo.
7. Phone repeats the animation of the samsung logo a time or two then restarts on its own. This loops until the phone is completely drained. I know that the rom works because that was the rom that I used to root my phone. I definitely don't mind downloading another rom if I have to.
my current goal, if we can fix this, is to quickly just update to the official jb rom for n7000 and not play around with the rooting and such until I have even more time to learn more.
at least I know for sure my phone isn't hardbricked, I would imagine I have either missed a step or something that caused the problem.
I have read through the forum and I did come across one post talking about checking my phone's partition and such.
I got to be honest, I'm really not technically skilled enough at this point in time to dare to mess around with that type of thing yet especially with so much coding to make sense of it. (I know this is kind of dumb to say especially when I rooted my phone and screwed up this bad). More importantly, I don't even know for sure if I need to do a partition or not.
Please let me know what I did wrong and how I can fix it.
I got a question though (out of curiosity), how come there's no toolkit for the n7000 like the S3 and also the note 2???
this is the name of the old gb rom that I tried flashing.

I actually have tried several other roms as well (from GB-JB, official and custom) and all of them so far has gotten to the samsung boot logo
I have read on the forums to try using Philz-cwm 6 kernel but I don't know if it'd solve my problem.
let me show you one of the threads I have read, if I dived into the wrong material let me know and I won't consider using it (or learn how to use it) for my current situation
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661590&highlight=samsung+logo+bootloop&page=2
like I was saying before, I really have no experience in coding so all the things that really made near no sense to me. I understand the basic concept of what its trying to do it's just seems like a very unsafe method for me to try especially when I lack the necessary knowledge in this area of expertise.
did you flash the GB rom using the standard PIT file ?
also you could try with the 5 file flashing method from this thread

Hello..
Why are you only wiping cache.
You should have done a factory reset on that step.

got a boot loop from trying to restore to stock, i came from cm 10.1 and i backed up cm 10.1 first then tried to restore but it decided to boot loop. it just stays at i897 screen, i am able to get into download mode, (haven't seen if odin recognizes it yet.) but no recovery at least i dont think, might be doing button combos wrong. i have only used odin a few times so i wouldnt know how to get back to stock, any help please?

Get odin KK4 without bootloaders and flash it in download mode. From there, make it sure it boots up and flash korn kernel wih Odin 1.87 (or 1.85). From there, you're free to flash any ROM you want.

See this post for an Odin or Heimdall One Click to Stock i897ucKK4... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
Instructions included.
Once ya get back to Stock KK4 (and maybe get Root if u wanna try that again), u probably need to stop there until u read up and get comfortable with the flashing processes etc. before u move on any further.

You can't restore stock ROM (2.3.x) from CM10.1 (4.2.2). Different Android versions use different partitions. As mentioned in posts above, easiest way to go back to stock is Odin one-click file. No need to flash bootloaders again, so use version without bootloaders. In order to restore your CM10.1 backup you need to flash CM10.1 ROM first (to repartition), then flash same CM10.1 ROM one more time. When installing process is done, go ahead and restore your CM10.1 backup. No need to reboot the phone, nor install gapps. When restoring is complete, reboot the phone. Now you're back to your CM10.1 setup where you started from.

You can go lower, just gotta follow certain steps.
As for what you need to do, it was already all provided to you. I suggest you read through it a few times, make sure you fully understand it and then proceed with flashing.
That being said, right more you can do exactly what i told you and flash odin kk4 without bootloaders to have a working phone.

Rogers stock 2.3.3 Odin one-click is available also in sticky threads, if you prefer Rogers ROM. Just do a quick search.
