Are there any apps that I can use as a remote control for Windows 7 media center? Preferably one that shows album art for the currently playing song etc.
I haven't seen any. I would love to be able to control my media center with my phone. A while back I made my own remote for my winmobile phone. It was functional but not very good looking or polished. If I had the time I might attempt to make one for android... but I will probably never have the time, especially if I want it to look good.
GMote works wonders for me.
Not sure if that will work for you, but I can choose to play video on my htpc, or stream the video from my htpc to my phone....requires a daemon to be running on your htpc plus the app.
I really dig it.
Yep, seconded, Gmote is awesome, not only integrated with media centre controls and streaming from the media centre to the phone as well but you can also use the touch screen as a mouse track pad and the g1 keyboard as the pc's keyboard, both absolutely awesome features. The server app running in the windows taksbar takes virtually no cpu or memory, auto starts and is found very quickly by the phone.

I have been trying to run the gmote program with my Windows Media Center (Windows 7) setup for about a week. It seems that the server on the computer crashes fairly regularly. Has anyone else been having this issue? I especially see this if my phone goes to sleep (black screen) and then I wake the phone back up.
I'm using an HTC Hero (CDMA/Sprint).
I would recommend switching to XBMC, I've been helping out testing this app which should be coming to the market soon and it's absolutely amazing works wonders for my xbox running xbmc.

Looks nice for sure. Just wish XBMC had DVR and live tv functionality like Windows Media Center.

Unfortunately, this program requires XBMC. I have my entire system setup to use Windows Media Center.
Windows Media Centre remote
Gmote is crashy and annoys me, i use Windows Media centre remote (on my android). But if the computer is busy, sometimes it reacts slowly. But it does not crash a lot.
As an update: The newest Gmote (2.0) works much better than the previous version I was using; maybe due to Windows 7, maybe due to the updated application. (Probably both). Anyway, it works much more reliably now. Unfortunately, there really isn't access to your playlist
Another option I am using now is MyRemote from the Market. Seems to be fast, stable, and provide more Windows Media Center type button access.

Media Center Control is a good choice. Search it with google or in the Android Market. It's a remote control with many features and works very well.

Has there been any development on this? WMC Windows 7 controls?
Hi,
I am avid reader of these forums, and finally pulled the trigger and got the Samsung Captivate (I had to stick with AT&T). I am relatively new to Android, and I was stunned but what I got with my Captivate!! (all due respect to my old beloved Tilt with WiMo). To think I was seriously considering iPhone 4
Anyway, I am yet to root the phone - will wait a few more days to get comfortable. For now I have been playing with a ton of apps etc.
I have a 100 GB iTunes Library which sits on my home server. I am looking for a solution where I can selectively sync certain albums and playlists to my phone. No point in carrying around 2 devices. I have already tried Double Twist. The problem is I need to install the client on my Laptop and get the music synced from the home server. I have got this working by manually adding 1 folder at a time - which is cumbersome, and not to mention that I loose artwork, ratings etc.
So, I am looking to [Home Server] <--> [Laptop] <--> [Phone]. At any point the source for this library is the Home Server, Laptop is only a pass thru.
Why use the laptop in the middle? I don't want to store media files here (work laptop).
Why not directly sync with the Home Server? It sits in the basement and I am lazy to go down the every time I want to sync that was my major irritant with iPod syncing.
Any recommendations?
Regards
Nick
Can't you set up home sharing in iTunes? That way you can see your library from your server on your laptop, and have doubletwist pull your playlist from that iTunes.
Home Server <--> Laptop --> DoubleTwist --> Captivate
I can't remember the exact steps, but I know you can pull from a home server like you are saying. Most people do it with their home theater set ups, but I don't see why it couldn't be done this way
I just use estrong file manager, and am able to get to my file shares via wifi. While this might work exactly like you want you won't have to plug in. just a thought.

I found Doubletwist to be unstable. I used MediaMonkey. It supports playlists and syncing to mounted drives or media devices. If you mount your homeserver as a drive letter on the laptop, then MediaMonkey should work fine.
The free version did all i needed, but it doesn't sync video - just music.
Google is your friend.

This works with any android phone.
Is there any way that at least music, Like Slacker or Music Player, can work in the background? I know that's what "not able to multitask" is, but this is a BIG downer for me. I like having Slacker or Pandora (HD2) running all day with my headphones in, but still be able to perform basic functions on the phone,
No unfortunately not at the moment. It will play with the phone background off but that is it. If you have to go to another program and then hit back it will resume/stream again.
Zune obviously plays in the background but so far not another player. I wonder when pandora will finally release the WP7.

I loved Pandora. But I would take any music program that would play in the background while still being able to text/surf the web like I used to on the HD2.
Small drawbacks to getting a brand spankin' new software. Gotta wait for these small things to hopefully change.
zune natively.does.that right now. I love zune and how on this phone its awesome. Signed up for a year pass. Can't beat it. Unlimited streaming of any song they have and 10 songs to keep forever is great.
Try zune if you are looking for a music player that will play while surfing, emailing etc.

Thanks for the advice. I was looking more into a free way of doing it like Pandora or Slacker, FM Radio ect (well as far as not pay for a membership to like Zune ect) I'd pay for an app.
Guess time will tell on what there chef's can do for the new windows...
I use Zune without a pass and I have transferred all my music and download all my podcasts and everything works a teat
CD (UK)
Yea, it's good for once you get your music on it, but I don't have a computer that I can use Zune. All my music is at work and i opnly have iTiunes, on a MAC, and can not download any programs.

I'm sure I read MS have loosened the controls on running apps in the background as long as it meets certain targets on battery usage, so it really depends if winmo gets enough mindshare for pandora etc to make an app for it
Yeh they did, I remember reading that spotify said they are making an app for WP7 and that it will run in the background
That would be reat. Sounds like they didn't allow it due to they didn't want the phone to run slow, and the performance going back to them? I'd rather my phone run a little slow to be able to at least multitask so music frm a free program such (slaker, pandora ect) can run in the background than hnave a super fast phone that i can only use one program at a time. For now, I'd be happy with just music running in the background. But I'm sure some apps could make use of this as well.
Wasn't this an iPhone problem at first (or current) too? Not the music, but multitasking in general?
I understand and appreciate the rationale behind the lack of multitask support for third-party apps in WP7, but I have already encountered two major inconvenient situations caused by it.
1. I can't run Messenger (which sucks for now) and browse the web or play games at the same time.
2. I'm playing a game half way, and I receive a text message. If I want to read and reply to the message, I'll have to reload the game all over again.
I do not know when or if Microsoft would support multitasking in an update, but I sure hope it will be soon. WP7 is such a sweet platform as far as development is concerned, yet the lack of third-party multitask support could be a dealbreaker for me.
Hey can anyone recommend good software for managing media? I particularly want to transfer photos easily. I have a program for music, but I'm open to recommendations. I know that Samsung has Kies and Sony has Media Go, both are useful. Does Motorola have any official media software?

Try AirDroid. The transfer is over wifi and you can transfer almost everything. Besides it is a file manager, ftp server, system manager...
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm really looking for PC/laptop software, I find it really easy to manage media from there. I see Songbird will only connect in Mass Storage Mode and Songbird is OK for music but not pictures. I'll find something eventually!

Is Motorola Motocast acceptable http://www.mymotocast.com/download
Hi, that software looks PERFECT. I tried it with the RAZR i and it won't set up at all. I have everything installed but cannot manage media let alone sync anything. Is this software compatible with the RAZR i?

Well according to the download on Play it says not.
You mentioned Medio Go so presumably you also use it? You can copy your photos etc in to Media Go and simply select your folder/s from there and select “Add to” Your phone will then show up as “Unnamed device” with the sub-options of moving them to internal or external memory, or you can simply transfer them directly from your pictures folder. No offence intended but I don’t see the problem.
This is my first Motorola (and also Android) phone, but they sure don’t seem too concerned about providing PC media management.
How about google Picasa?
No worries, I get it; if you have use for something, you understand, if you don't need something, you won't understand. A few of my other devices (Apple and Sony) allow for quick and automatic movement of media from A to B or vice versa just by connecting the devices, I'm looking for the same now. I've been using the 10 camera shot per second feature and the photos are really stacking up. Drag and drop is a bit too 1990s for me. I've uninstalled Media Go now, I thought it didn't even recognise non-Sony devices? I'll give it a go then, if you say it appears.
True about Motorola and PC management, everywhere related to my phone it directs me to Motocast. I emailed them and they said the RAZR i is not compatible. Nevermind, I'll find something.
All I’m saying is that you can transfer files/folders via Media Go using “Add to” on right-clicking in Windows.
Whether this is the functionality you’re actually looking for I’m not sure but it works for me. I’ve used it to transfer a couple of albums and a number of tracks over (although my Walkman is my main portable music source), and after reading your thread I thought I’d see how it works with photos and no problems.
Just tried it out with iTunes but there doesn’t seem to be an obvious way of doing the same: there may be,but I can’t be bothered to find out!
Thanks buddy, I appreciate your help.
For music, if you do like iTunes, I have a recommendation. There is an app called iSyncr which allows you to copy any lists in your iTunes directly to your phone. If you use their Rocket Player to use the music, it will update your playcounts etc. Music at least, I've got covered! :good:
Using my amazing new HTC One Black to control my TV and it is great, however a lot of things I watch are played through VLC on my laptop and output to my TV via HDMI.
I noticed on ebay you can get these really cheap remote set ups for computers via USB..

What i would like to know is do those computers remotes work any good? Would they control VLC? And could I emulate the remote with my HTC One???? All I actually want it to do is play, pause and stop really so that I can do those things without having to get up and go to the computer just to pause it etc.
Anyone know???
Thanks
Try Unified Remote matey, Got a Mousepad and Keyboard, but also loads of quick setting remotes that try different stuff like Media Centre, Shutdown, Volums, etc etc. I think there is one for itunes, VLC etc too.
Source? I use the pro version. Works with Bluetooth and Wifi.

Thanks that will probably work but does mean 2 different apps...
Would be nice if i could control the TV and play/pause the film I am outputting from the laptop via the HTC One remote app...
I will try the unified remote though, thanks again.
I suppose if the laptop has an IR Blaster mate, would be possible. As one setting in the In house remote app has microsoft. . . Ud prob need an ir blaster from a Windows Media Centre remote, Honestly though, try Unified. Its Brilliant!
Just installed it.. so easy.. already had a film playing and can now play/pause etc with my phone and HTC One TV remote is just one tap away.. outstanding... thank you very very much.. this is so good...
Can you setup the TV app from windows media centre?
