hey guys!
I'm a looong time lurker here, but now I thought I'll ask for advice
Now that google is phasing out the nexus, is it a good idea to buy a spare? I totally love mine, and am not a big gamer.I just love to tinker
Thanks!
The person who can answer that the best is you really. Unless you planned on using the nexus one for the next 2 yrs or so, I don't think it's a good idea. There'd be so much better phone by year's end or next year.
Hi!
I was a bit vague on my reasons The Nexus is my first Android phone (didn't want an iphone for obvious reasons - closed...), but used numerous winmo smartphones before. I decided on the N1 due to its "openness" (easyly unlockable bootloader, plethora of CMs...)
As I said, gaming is not high on mylist, so 3d performance and the touchscreen issues are not a bother for me. However, in terms of raw power the N1 one is still a lively beast with a dedicated dev scene.
So, to sum up: the N1 does everything for me. What worries me is that today's phones are not built for longevity, and now that the N1's availability is in question (I'm in CEE), I'm thinking of buying another one just to be safe. Or am I just paranoid to think my Nexus won't last 1.5 years??
Phasing out the Nexus? Just because they are no longer selling them on their store does not mean, to me, that they are phasing it out. They are planning to sell them directly through retail outlets.
Anyway, I don't see a value in having a spare. They are easy enough to get.
I will sell u mine
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Won't it be harder to get later? I saw a price hike after the announcement was made - by the retail shops here in Hungary that is...
I wouldn't bother. Within the next 6-12 months there will be a better phone around. Instead of sitting on a phone, get some hookers and coke.
@JCopernicus, been there, done that I think it all boils down to when a new dev phone will arrive ( if ever) from google
wil there be any nexus or something new from google?

Are you NUTS?!
Even after Google "discontinues" selling the N1 you will still be able to purchase the N1 for an extra $25 by just creating a developer account...

as I said unfortunately I live in Hungary, so I cannot buy it from google as my country is not deemed a market large enough to sell it online
edit: spelling
I was talking to one of my buddies here at work who is also an Android Freak like myself and we were discussing about how Google and LG can sell such a device packing what it does for $299 or $349.
It's seems like it has really beautiful build quality also, while Samsung sells a plastic dual core S3 with half the RAM, lower resolution screen for double the price!
Don't get me wrong, I am both happy and sad that the phone is so damn cheap. Glad because it is so dirt cheap that I can buy it as a backup phone to my Note 2 and just not worry about it falling and breaking or whatever. Replacing just the LCD on my Note 2 would probably pay for the whole Nexus 4!
Sad because since it is so cheap, it almost gives me the impression that it's some kind of gophone, pay as you go device. You know, a disposable phone. Something any 13 year old who mows lawns on the weekends can afford. Also judging by the comments and anticipation in this forum, those are most likely the majority of buyers. 13 year old geeks. =)
To me the device lost something special, exclusivity.
When I first picked up my Note 2, everybody at work was in awe and were ready to go purchase one immediately.
Then I told them how much I paid, $690 off contract and they all had sticker shock. Only one other fella at my work has a Note 2 besides me now, and that's my boss. The device feels special to me.
I know this post seems a bit ridiculous, but that's something that is bugging me a little about the device. What do you guys think? A little something inside kinda wish Google priced this device similar to the Galaxy Nexus. I think it would have been more special to me. Am I crazy?

Just because people are excited, you're assuming they're 13? Right...
... and imo, the price does not make it any less exclusive.
You could always buy two and strap them back-to-back for that "cachet" feel?
In any case, mainstream smartphones, like all technology, will always be getting less exclusive. If exclusivity is of import, the Tag Heuer Android phones look quite sharp, but probably will be behind on the OS curve...
Setting aside the ridiculousness of caring about exclusivity, your work colleagues likely got sticker-shock because they don't know much about the cellphone market. I'm sure they don't think of the iPhone as an "exclusive" device, and yet it's in the same range as the Note 2 off-contract. The Nexus 4 may not be a monetarily exclusive device, but it's still going to have limited sales due to the number of people who are informed enough about their options to pick one up.

Front-to-front. The back's the best-looking part, after all; and the part that displays the ever-important logos.
You should realize that there are people outside of XDA who don't even know that this phone exists.
You say less exclusive... I say more support.
How many people actually know what a Nexus phone even is? I don't know anyone who does. They don't really advertise and come to think of it, I've never seen anyone with a Nexus (any of them).
No, it makes it lighter on my wallet. I don't care how many other people have it as long as I do.

The price is being subsidized. Just making it easier to reach more people. This way el goog can make even more money with mobile ad revenue.

Which is why we shouldn't worry about the phone being out of stock. Hopefully the stock outweighs the demand.
If having exclusivity means paying $1000 dollars, I'll take a less exclusive phone any day for $350
You think $500+ phones are exclusive? You'll find more Note 2s and iPhones than N4.
That said, the more the N4s out there, the more accessories there will be for it. And thats always a good thing.

Perhaps. Google may keep production low for the first wave after watching previous launches. There seems to be a lot of uncertainty about the popularity of this phone due to the lack of LTE, expandable storage, and maybe inadequate battery. Those of us looking to buy the phone can only hope that it is either not that popular or that Google didn't lower production.

You know what I got from reading this? That you need to feel special/better than your friends. That's no reason to jack up the price of a phone.
Tell you what, I'll buy mine, then sell it to you for $859.99, that'll really blow your colleagues out of the water! Or how about avoiding the faux pas of bragging about how much money you spent on a cell phone. Hell, if anything I'll be showing my friends this phone and telling them how cheap it was. Look at this thing, it's awesome, and cost half the price of your NoteII!

I don't see anything wrong of a 13 year old can save up and purchase this device, it allows a younger audience to own a modern smartphone without the hefty price tag. Exclusivity to one type of group (in this case being age) isn't somthing company's want for their products, and if they lure in the younger users with the low price tag, that means more marketshare for them. The nexus 4 isn't a fashion item like more popular phones such as the iPhone, or even the galaxy s3, it's made for contract free or value plan customers who want a fast phone for a reasonable price.
Lol I think this thread should be closed. =/
Who cares? Does it matter if the phone is not as "exclusive" as you would like?
It's an amazing phone at a great price, it will further push the Android ecosystem.
If you want exclusive, stick with foreign imports of obscure devices.

Dear all
I know that what you are going through is unacceptable and we are all working through the nights and weekends to resolve this issue. Supplies from the manufacturer are scarce and erratic, and our communication has been flawed. I can offer an unreserved apology for our service and communication failures in this process.
For those that originally received a 3-5 days shipping estimate, your orders are now in process for fulfillment. You can expect an email notification early this week which will include tracking information. Although you will be initially charged in full, you will receive a credit for the shipping charge soon after.
For others that received pre-Christmas shipping estimates, we anticipate processing your orders for fulfillment this week.
I realise that the people who ordered the Nexus 4 so early are among our most committed and loyal users and we are doing all we can to put things right.
Sorry again.
Dan

Some people are just a bunch of whining drama queens.
If you want to look at a product launch that REALLY failed, you only have to look at the Xbox360, 60% failure rate after 3 years on the market..... Thats a REAL botched product launch...

granted, some people are drama queens, but there are many people who still haven't received their order from Nov 13, and don't forget all the backordered folks from the initial release. Still there's some 1-2 weekers who have not received shipping emails. There's also the issue of ppl not receiving their devices in proportion to their order time. Furthermore, he's also apologizing about their lack of communication, which was another issue.
Also, providing an example of a greater failure doesn't justify this one haha.

Google originally quoted 3-5 day shipping to those of us who ordered on Nov 13. Then we got a backorder email the next day that changed the estimate to 3 weeks. I got my phone yesterday. That's right, a day shy of 5 weeks. Some Nov 13 orders have yet to be filled. They have NOT been filling the orders in the order that they were made, nor have they kept up with demand. WHAT???!!! AN APOLOGY FOR LATE SHIPPING???!!! WHO CARES! FK HIM AND HIS APOLOGY!!!!
Where's an apology for USB/OTG and all the hardware issues??? Who needs an apology, recall this phone and start over again. They need to be hit where it hurts, in the wallet. Apologies don't hurt them financially. Fk that.
A lot of people got backordered, and even at this moment, the phone is completely sold out. There aren't really people being drama queens factoring in that the Google website is pretty much the only place to get the phone (unless you want to pay 200 dollars more), and when other products are sold out, there are lots of other places that might be supplied. LG came in with a really small supply of Nexus 4's, and it's hurt us in the end. Then again, I think the problem is also that, even now, I don't think they're that incredibly concerned since they're not looking to profit off the phone majorly as they are just trying to introduce the phone into the market as a stepping stone for other companies. If they don't sell some large number like 2 million phones, they are more than happy and I don't think that's what their intentions were in the first place. Unfortunately, this ends up hurting a lot of people who actually want the phone, or who have it and want accessories and such.

I wonder if/when google will bring the nexus line to motorola if we'll see an actual big player rise in the smartphone world. I imagine if google put in an actual real solitary effort into the nexus line (instead of these half assed cooperative efforts) and advertised its product well, we would see a legitimate competitor in the smartphone market. There is some money to be made with the rise of android in the past year. I hope google will consider augmenting its objectives for the nexus line in the near future.

Pfft.
Old news ...we have enough news Google screwed up in every aspect of selling the N4, from the launch time announcement to the ordering to the shipping to the communication to the rma's.
you name and it they screwed up big time everywhere they were involved in.
I find it hard to believe how cynical everyone is. I had a few issues as well with Google, but I called and talked through it all. I know some of the customer service representatives are a little clueless, but those who have't got their device yet, probably could have done something about it. Also, Google is new to this game, you can't expect everything to be perfect their first try.
And yes I know they've sold devices before, I have purchased almost all of them, but I don't believe they have ever had such a high demand.
Just relax and enjoy the holidays.

What bugs are these that require new devices?
Here is an idea that requires everyone to participate.
Plan: Try and get Best Buy to sell you a Nexus 5 before official launch. Maybe they have stock already.
Action: Call your local Best Buy and act dumb. Tell them you want to buy the Nexus 5 and to put one on hold for you to pick up. Or walk into a store if you prefer and do the same. Ask them if perhaps they have a Nexus 5 sitting in the back of the store. Make no mention of the fact that it hasn't officially been announced for sale.
I forget exactly which phone was sold before it was officially released a years or so ago. I remember reading that this guy got a phone before time and he was a bit nervous about it but posted details online about it. So this is possible people! If you remember this incident and the phone remind us.
If everyone does it we might get lucky and have more info to share on the Nexus 5.
Of course report back if you are successful. It might even be fun to report the failed outcomes too. Be creative. See if you can snag an inventory screen shot. See if at least they tell you that they are back there but that they can't be touched.
PS - Don't be that guy. If you think this is a stupid plan be polite. Offer your opinion and insight in a respectful way. You can't say it isn't possible because this has happened before. Sure there are practices in place to prevent this. But all it takes is one rookie mistake and things go unexpected. This is all in good fun. We might get lucky!

Who told you it was going to be sold at Best Buy? I see you have a N4, did you get that at Best Buy too?
We don't know if Best Buy is going to sell the Nexus 5. But they might. They sell all the other Google products (Nexus 7, Chromecast, Chromebook, etc). We also know from a particular Canadian store that there is Nexus 5 inventory. So the Nexus 5 isn't going to be exclusive to the Play Store. None if this is definite for Best Buy, but it can't hurt to try our luck. Perhaps Google learned from the N4 launch that Play Store only sales is bad way to launch a product.
... And I got my N4 and N10 from the Play Store on launch day.

Very true, that's why I find it's hard to believe that they'll have the N5 at launch. Someone should've posted a picture of the inventory already. I know I would if I was still there. (Like for the Wii's and PS3's.)
I'm pretty confident they are. I visit my local BestBuy yesterday and asked a customer service rep. He said he knew what I was talking about and went to ask his manager if he could sell it. When he came back 2-3 minutes later, he told me suddenly he wasn't permitted to talk about it because it's not official, so he couldn't legally converse over it. I'm going to try back at another location and see if I can get someone to pop early there, I also got my Nexus 7 2013 48 hours before launch just because I asked. Some guy went in the back and got it for me. Worth a try I suppose.

I have yet to see any promotions for pre order. I have fi. The only thing I see is done free youtube music. Maybe this is because everyone complained when the pixel 4xl went on huge sale around Christmas right after lunch. Post any promotions if you see them. Thanks.
And since I haven't pre ordered yet. It says sips November 9th. So I think it would be worth it to wait another month and get a way better price. Just my opinion.

Looks like it's across the board, all countries from any retailer including the Google store. They sell for $299 in the US so if you're in the market for some noise cancelling headphones this is a good deal.
I just don't know how google can compete when you can still get a more "top tier" phone for less with promotions. I will probably always stick with my pixels every year, but it's hard to get people to jump ship.

Doesn't that seem kind of clear? I certainly hope so, I'm counting on it. But I guess you want a Google confirmation rather than just a mention? You think a call to Google is in order? Oh crap you're right, only certain regions. I missed that.

Looks like it's across the board, all countries from any retailer including the Google store. They sell for $299 in the US so if you're in the market for some noise cancelling headphones this is a good deal.

The article says UK, France and Germany only. Maybe we (US preorders) should all complain to Google and see what happens? I wouldn't even begin to know who to ***** at though.

You can't call them so it will have to be online help. I don't suppose they will care one iota. I'm hoping for a BF promotion for the headphones and those purchased before November will automatically get them. But I'm not holding my breath.
This is the only nexus/pixel I haven't pre ordered. I think I could live with the smaller screen coming from 4xl. I just hate to upgrade, or downgrade, however you look at it, just to get 5g. If there were a solid promotion, maybe

no promo offer on Australian Google Store and only 2 of the 3 carriers here are offering promos, Telstra with a free Home Hub or Optus with a free Nest Audio. That's it. Sucks, I would have loved those free headphones here

I'm curious what the BF deal will be. Maybe $100 off? I seem to recall that Google gave early adopters the same $100 off when people complained that they bought not a month ago and felt betrayed. But I'm not sure. Google Fi did not budge an inch. I would have taken the headphones for sure but I would never have gone out and buy them. So did I really need them, probably not. Give me a phone with no gap and I'll take that as a gift.

I was one of the early adopters that complained and got the BF promo given to me as Google Store Credit. The reason why Google is able to do that is because the have/had a Buyer's Remorse in place. If they still have Buyer's Remorse then pretty much everyone in the US who gets the Pixel 5 can get a price match/credit. This was done via Google Store. As I remember Google Fi did not do anything for their customers.
