Can I reinstall the stock dialer? - Motorola Droid 3

My wife has a stock Dorid 3 but has reported various problems with it. I rooted the phone so I could clear cache and Dalvik cache to see if that will help anything. It has received at least one OTA since she has had it.
The dialer app is still causing issues, such as: taking more than 1 minute to actually start dialing, rebooting, etc... I am thinking that somehow the dialer app is corrupt somehow so I was hoping to just reinstall it. Is that possible? Where would I find the stock dialer for the Droid 3?
I installed Dialer One for her and that seems to work but of course it is not the stock dialer so it is something she has to get used to.
Thanks

I'm afraid I can't help you, but I sure would like to know the answer. My stock dialer is doing the same thing.
I hadn't thought about using dialer 1. Aside from its being different how do you like it?

You should be able to reinstall it. Just pull the dialer from a stock-ish rom like minimoto, rename the old one in /system/app to have a .bak at the end and place the new one in, make sure to check permissions match everything else in the folder and reboot the phone. If it doesn't work just delete the new one you put in and remove the .bak from the old and reboot again. You will need root access for all this
Or you can just sbf the whole phone right back to stock if you don't mind losing your data

What sort of set up are you running there?
Stock, non-rooted N1? Or did you upgrade to FroYo over an existing install using Paul's zip? Any applications installed? When is the phone freezing?
Would love to help, but I think we're going to need a little bit more information from you first.

Did you wipe? If not, usually a wipe helps. I wiped and have not had a single issue of FC...Freezing or anything. I went from Enom to Wipe to Paul's Zip with Radio.
I have the same problem. Until now the screen stayed black after the other party ended the call. Had to pull battery 3 times.
Problem exists even after reflashing, wiping and clearing storage.
Im om pre-rooted frf50 from paul. Gonna try with an older radio..

Im having similar issues with my 2.2 installation. I have it installed on my wife's non-rooted N1.
Not just that but the market is not even usable. Even if I clear cache.
Again, her phone is not rooted, I wipped everything from her phone then applied Froyo and its been a nightmare. Her phone isn't even stable enough to use and I cant seem to figure it out.
I need to find a way back to 2.1 without having to root her phone. She is adamant about me not doing that to her phone even though Ive rooted all the phones I've ever used with no issues.
I was having the same problem on my N1. Started suddenly two days after the manual upgrade to 2.2. The phone would either freeze to a black screen or sometimes the live wallpaper would continue but the phone was unresponsive even to the power button. Needed to pull the battery to restart.
It stopped after I:
* Turned off live wallpaper
* Uninstalled LauncherPro Beta
* Removed the Pure Calender Widget (was broken after 2.2 update anyway)
* Charged the battery (was down to below 10% when it started happening repeatedly).
Anyone one of them (or none of them) could have been the culprit. My guess it was one of the last two (PureCalender or battery) but haven't had time to troubleshoot it. Try some of these and see if it helps.
Ive tried all that on her phone. I just wiped it again completely and re flashed just in case that was the issue. Phone still had all the issues described in this thread.
I wiped the sd card, wiped all previous system files via the stock recovery and re flashed the update zip. You cant get anymore clean than that and its still so unstable the phone its unusable. I have to either hope soft booting works or pull the battery as a last ditch.
Is there any way I could downgrade her phone to 2.1 without rooting? I tried the shipping rom in the sticky above but it seems that isn't totally legit for stock use because the phone doesn't like how its signed.
I guess I could call google/htc tomorrow but who knows where that'll get me. The only bonus iud that her phone is not rooted so she didn't really have her warranty voided.

Yes until now it does. Sometimes the power button is reacting a little late but i havent had to pull the battery yet with the older radio.
You might want to download it again and flash that to see if you had a corrupt download. First copy all data from the sd and partition it. Just make everything fat. I havent used the stock recovery in ages so I cant recall if you can partition from there, if you cant, do it on the pc. Wipe everything that the stock recovery can wipe. Then try to flash your new download of the update. You can do this fairly quickly and its worth a try before you go through the process of reverting to 2.1.

Things to not do (or to think about) after Root...for now

The users. First off I want to make this very clear, I am not responsible for anything nor is droidxforums for any damages done to devices due to root, since it was up to the user to make the decisions they make. Thank you, please continue to read.
1. First off I am posting this for reasons that were obvioulsy not too obvious.
2. If you chose to delete anything other than something that can be downloaded from the market, YOU took that risk. You have potentially just bricked your device.
3. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING THAT HAS "BLUR" IN ITS FILE NAME.
4. DO NOT try to flash a custom recovery via Rom Manager then wonder why your phone is stuck with a cool new Motorola logo.
5. This thread will be updated very frequently, before posting questions and what not, just post your problem, no questions please, I will be using this to help as many of you as possible.
6. Most importantly do not mess with the framework right now, there is many $600 papers weights laying around now.
7. DO NOT TOUCH BACK UP ASSISTANCE UNLESS ITS WINDY IN YOUR HOUSE OR OFFICE AND YOU NEED A PAPER WEIGHT.
Thank you.

We tested this last nite,, you can do basically whatever you want as long as you put the phone back to pristine condition before you do a wipe or update or whatever..
Here is the basic method that works to copy files back to the phone if you took out bloat..

It seems that no one knows for sure.
People have been able to root, re-copy any removed system applications ( blockbuster, skype, etc..) apply the .604 update and stay rooted
Only time will tell for sure
I only deleted Blockbuster, Skype, NFSShift, and AmazonMP3/Kindle apps. Would I need to put those back on and unroot if I wanted to do a hard reset?
From what I hear, you need to put back ALL of the apps that came with the phone to apply the .604 update
Un-rooting doesn't seem to be necessary

He is correct, we have had phones with tons removed, copied everythign back with the right permissions, took out all the things that root did, basically un-rooting, apply the update, then re-root, so you will have to put the phone back to pristine before the update, but it works fine.
At least it does for now. As for the rooting, it is a huge gaping hole in linux/android, not a specific phone or phone home launcher so it will likely not be fixed until at least Gingerbread 3.0 IF THEN. Bird really smoked the monkey on this one, i would marry him if it was legal.
But yeah, dont freak out if u removed a ton of stuff, here is a complete pristine system app dir if u need:
http://www.chadhaney.com/droidXDefault/
Zanix, thanks for updating into the post, i hope it ends up helping people.
Updated OP with direct link to original .apk list
Hey,
Where can I find a list of the correct permissions? I removed like 5 apps and copied them back and still the update fails.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Check the permissions from one of the files you did not remove
I'm not 100% sure that will work
It is 644 if I recall correctly.
I think you need to check the umask for each file as well
ON the post on how to put back backup assistant it tells you the permissions for all the files in the app dir
its in the first post
So I wanted to install a status bar replacement for Droid X, which involves replacing framework-res.apk. Instead of doing it through adb, I replaced the file with Root Explorer, and it sent it into boot loop. Do I now have a paperweight? =/
I tried doing factory reset, but that didn't fix it...
Edit: It sees update.zip on my SD card in recovery mode (some file I think I downloaded before), so is there a way to maybe apply a recovery command to replace framework-res.apk?
Edit2: sigh, nvm, there is no update.zip on the SD card, I'm not sure where it's reading it from. But when I tell it to apply it, it doesn't find it either. Looks like I bricked my phone
Has anyone been using Autostarts to block the bloat from loading on boot?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
The Titanium Backup "Freeze" feature has been working like a charm for me. I've frozen all of the bloatware (the autorun stuff) and seen no adverse effects on the phone.
The phone seems to perform better without the running bloat. But this might be a placebo effect. The jury is still out...I'm testing. One thing is for sure, I feel better knowing that useless extra processes are not running in the background.
The big open question for me is how does the TB Freeze function work? Is it like the task killers or does it intercept the app on boot?
It does not change anything in the root directory since all the *.apk files are in tact for the frozen apps. This is the main reason I use the freeze since there seems to be little risk of bricking the phone with this method.

[Q] All of a sudden random apps force closing for no apparent reason [i9000]

Hey,
this problem started only today and has never happened before. The only things changing were some app updates and a few new installs. I already uninstalled all of the apps installed in the last few days in hopes of reverting the situation but it didn't help. And after I made the first reboot when the apps began to force close randomly it looked like a semi factory reset was made. All my contacts are gone, there are no SMS/call logs, but all SMSes, pictures and videos are still there. If I try to open the Market app it asks me if I accept TOS, Gmail is not set, mobile internet is not working (due to reset settings), Wi-Fi and bluetooth settings are still there. In short, everything is half-fuc*ed.
What do you thing happened? And is there any possibility I can go back to a normal state without starting from fresh?

i9000 random loss of data
Yes, this is a rather old thread I'm trying to revive here, but as it is adviced to continue those instread of duplicating them, here are my issues:
I gave my i9000 to a relative ~a year ago and recently it started acting strange. About 1-2 times a month I get a call from that relative saying: "I get a lot of force closes, phone is unusable, nothing works". I then walk over, take a look and yes, unusable. It appears that all information in the /system partition gets lost for no reason. The relative told me that this usually happens when some google apps are updating, but it might still be random.
Currently MackayRom (latest) is installed.
Usually when I got the call, I hopped over to my relative, did a factory reset (wipe of /system and /data + Cache and Dalvik Cache) then reflashed the ROM and Gapps and everything looked good again. Sadly the issue continues to return.
What I tried so far is a complete wipe of anything, reverting to a stock TW Rom, and going back to an AOSP Rom from there (first CM 11, then Mackay). The issue appeard to be gone afterwards, I didn't hear from that relative for an unusual amount of time, but after a month or 1 1/2, it returned.
My guess is, that one of the chips that are containing the /system partition is broken or at least close to die (I'm not sure if it is just one or multiple chips, since the CM Team or Pawit himself changed something in the partition structure somewhere between cm10, cm10.1 and cm11 to ensure the compatibility of that old device with KitKat). Anyways, I'd love to hear any ideas or suggestions on how to solve this issue (although I reached a point where I think that solving this isn't possible anymore, unless I wanna swap the Mainboard, which would mean paying an amount of money that I could get a new phone for as well.) Soon as I have the time, I'll Odin-flash the latest TW Rom to the device and have my relative use that for a while, just to see if the different/older partition structure helps in any way.
Thanks in advance for any replies .

Bionic 5.5.1_84_DBN-55 Auto_DeOdexer

For those of you that do not want to DeOdex their phone manually, here's a script I created to do it for you. I've created this same script before for the Droid X, and it's quite simple. Here's what you need.
1) Your phone must be Rooted.
2) You must install Bionic_Bootstrapper.
Below you can find these items.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO ROOT AND BOOTSTRAP
Once you have that.... download my DeOdexer and put it on your sdcard.
Bionic_AutoDeOdexer
MIRROR
Reboot into recovery. BACKUP YOUR PHONE!!!!
Once that completes, then go to install from zip. Choose file from zip... find the Bionic_DeOdexer zip file... and run it.
There is a script at the beginning that checks the build.prop file and makes sure you have the correct build. You must have 5.5.1_84_DBN-55. If you do not, I hope it fails.
Reboot.... and all should be good. Now that you are DeOdexed.... have fun theming!
As you should know, do this at your own risk. Yes, I've tested this on my phone and had no issue. This doesn't mean you won't experience a problem. I'm not responsible for what happens to your phone.
ENJOY!!!
Worked great. Saved me a lot of time from manually deodexing.

If you modified any of the APKs, to include freezing them, I cannot guarantee it will work. Best thing is to be completely stock and rooted. At least that's the way I did this script.
Thanks for the answer! TB has a batch defrost, so if I decide to go ahead & run this script, I'll defrost everything first.

Good to know. I do know that depending on how the person downloads some packages, they may get corrupted during download. If it fails one time... try again. If it continues to fail, re-download and try again.

Kind of a goofy question, but is there any reason that deodexing the stock (rooted) rom would worsen data loss issues?
The reason I ask is that I reverted to stock yesterday after experiencing substantial data problems with UNLEASH3D 1.5. Ran well for the entire day and this morning. Then, a couple hours ago, I ran this script and have had nothing but issues since, with both WiFi and cellular data dying, and not coming back without a reboot. Reverted to stock again, and all is normal.
Any ideas?

I have these same issues on stock, on .892 and on any roms - I really think it is just the phone :/ - there is a known bug on the bug list about data connectivity issues.
Btw the .892 radio is complete crap.... at least on my phone it is...
Market Apps
After running this script, I noted that my normal list of around 60 or so market apps is now showing only around 13 apps. Also, the market app asked me for authorization when I started it up. So, I don't know if this script, or maybe an automatic update to the market app has caused my missing downloaded apps.
They are still on the phone, and still backed up with TB, but they are not shown in the market My Apps page.
Any thoughts or solutions?

Note**** If you are having issues with the calendar FC'ing, try clearing the apps cache first. [Settings, manage applications, all apps]. then if that doesn't work, try flashing this file.
Hope everything works. Enjoy.
Any issues, Holla!!!!!
Thanks. I hated the calendar that was in the From.

I just flashed this after having tried a manual reinstall by placing the apk into /system/app. I was getting FC when trying to open the calendar and after flashing this the result is the same. The cache is listed as empty and I cleared the app data after flashing it just in case. Any idea of how to get this to work? Thanks for putting together a clean way to replace all the files needed for the Calendar.

IDK. I've flashed this plenty of times on a few different revo's with no issues. I'll check a few things and see what I can do. Does the widget work?

The widget works, as in appears. Though it is unable to pull any calendar information as is my other calendar widget. If nothing obvious comes to light, at this point I'd be willing to just reflash BO in case I broke something and then do your tidy little fix on top.
if you can, I suggest trying to rip BO's calendar and push it to your phone just to see if it's the apk or maybe a system issue. if it works, then it would seem to be an apk issue. If it doesn't work then I would reflash bo and re setup any tweaks then flash this zip. IDK. Imma keep tinkering and see what I can find. Might be a little later today, the JOB is calling my name.

After doing that the Calendar is still complaining. So I'll just reflash BO 2.0 and do it all in one fell swoop.
Edit: Update: So I did all that and still no go. It's complaining that sync is not currently working (for all my gmail accounts) and will be back shortly. I'm tempted to just do a .tot restore and go from absolute scratch when I get home, but that's really a pain.
Another Update: Something is out of whack on my phone, and I'm most likely to blame. Even reflashing BO 1.1 won't restore calendar functionality. .tot restore and go from scratch is in order I guess.
