Im in the process of starting the development of a new rom for the kindle fire 2nd generation, as this is my first rom ever im wondering if anyone can point me in a good direction.
modified system.img
wouldn't it be possible to take a copy of the original system and modify it creating a rom, nothing fancy to begin with however from there we could continue to modify it. but if we did it that way we would almost be guaranteed a working rom to begin with

Hi everyone,
I've been reading up and creating a custom ROM for a while now, and I think my eyes were bleeding for quite some time trying to figure out this issue. I've had no luck, so I'm hoping someone can help.
I'm using mamaich's tools, and I can get the ROM extracted and dumped just fine. Specifically I'm just doing the OS portion of the ROM.
I've gone in and added and edited files where I think they need to be, and modified the reg files and such. So I think I'm good there. I want to test it out though, so I need to create the nk.nbf. That's the part I'm having troubles with..
I run buildimgfs, and it seems to do something, but the date and time on the bin files don't change. So, for ****s and giggles I run make_imgfs, and I get a strange error that I can't read, as it looks like perhaps it may be in a different language.
Anyone else run into this, perhaps have any ideas?
THanks!
Hello all,
I'm curious if there is a way to install ROMs in the Android emulator from the SDK for testing..?
I've done some digging and experimenting, and can't find any information on this -- if it's possible, could someone point me in the right direction?
I play around with different ROMs a lot and like to see them in action, and am changing ROMs often. This is a pain to do on my phone, and it's beginning to show its wear ; ) Ideally, I'd be able to install the ROMs in the emulator to play around with the different flavors before deciding on one to install and keep on the phone.. also to stay up-to-date without risking the stability of my device..
I've tried using a nandroid dump of system.img off my phone mixed in with the Android SDK's images, and this boots OK with the ROM (I had Cyanogen 4.2.3.1 at the time).. but the problem then is getting a system.img of the new ROMs from the "update.zip" files that are available, without putting them on my phone first (kind of defeats the purpose)..
Is this doable? Either "flashing" these updates to the emulator image, or creating a system.img from the zip's?
Thanks!
From what I've found, you can do it from Nandroid images. However, I didn't really have any luck with it.
I'd LOVE to finally find a real solution.
also from what i know only cyans roms will work other roms frameworks are too heavily modded to work on the 1.5 sdk ie. hero, pulse, blur
sad i know

lol i well didnt read the post before replying no there is no way that you can test it from a update.zip sorry
I will be using "Nooter 0.2" with my Imac OSX to perform the process. What I am unsure about is how do I install Gingerbread or another system once it is rooted? Then how do I install applications.
Thanks for your time,
Kassun

Someone needs to create a sticky post with stuff like this.
Thanks, I was looking over the site, but I am still not sure how to or find an os to install on the nook color.
Right this moment, the answer is that you DON'T find another OS to install. Nobody has released any custom ROMs for the NC yet.
You could (doubtful since you're a first time rooter) roll your own from ASOP source if you're feeling adventurous of course.
I found myself flashing and re-flashing the new mods and kernels to see what I liked to fit my personality
I am running 217 ICS, I was on ICS 217 a blue million times but with my developing sense of learning more about build.prop and system framework
due to me being new to linux and smartphones in general. However, I am a windows, php, C programmer
I found myself. NO SDCARD, with the Droid Utililty, Flashing my Copied bin and image files I wanted but no way to apply them with a zip
1. There is hope for you people that are like me dumb and not thinking ahead lol... j/k
2. Download this file named 6.7.2-180_DR4-16_M2-37
Blur_Version.6.16.217.XT894.Verizon.en.US <!~ I M PREVENTED from posting links new user, enjoy your droid without SDCARD
3. Use RSD Lite v5.7 by motorola, I was running ICS keep in mind.
-- I found conflicting information that people were putting on this forum that you cannot flash back to GB from ICS which is not entirely correct.
4.Flashing this file with RSD LITE v5.7 will flash install and everything without the need for a tool or an install form an external SDCARD.
it saved me and I hope it can save those who misplace SD CARDS.
Currently running ICS Update 217 with this install

Note: That thread on droidforums is a little bit out of date and only contains links to Gingerbread firmware. Do not attempt to flash Gingerbread on top of ICS as you will brick your phone. Use the ICS fastboot linked above.
Thank you for your time hekping all XDA

Thanks for taking the time to post that. I started with the droid 4 first phone in u years. Needless to say after 3 months of flashing rooting and figuring out what the system is about I couldn't have made a better choice. I am great with windows and php and undesrstand the fundamentals I never did use linux because i thought business was windows. Anyways through Android OS i have founf a new world that would've been better for me alltogether. I swear I pay my 404.00mphone bill, but thank the rom developeres and the Utility that i mix and match boots to correspond to his batch flashing. ****DO NOT DO THIS i usually break my phone trying new roms 3 times a day. ...
This time i was trying to find an alternative to going to walmart. I am yet to understand why after flashing the system wothh Matt's Utility that it doesn't boot as RSD lite did..... Mind you I'm very lucky to not have a brick i have tried everything reasonable. And appreciate ALL you guys here at XDA-DEVELOPERS whose Articles helped me learn the system, learn the flashing and better utilize MY phone. TThis is an awesome forum and thanks to the knowledge you have shared with me which is priceless,
Saluti,
So I've got me an Atrix HD, to use as a PMP, and I've rooted it.
I've spent the better part of the day looking up custom roms, but I'm still not sure what to do.
Basically, what I want to do is have a barebones device, without 100+ services running on startup, no bloatware apps and ****, and etc.
I figure I should be using a custom ROM, yes? Is Cyanogenmod the name of a rom, because it seems to be the most popular, but there's quite a few I see on the XDA forums and I'm not sure what to do.
I have RSDlite on my computer and the Atrix HD stock firmware image, so if I screw up I should be alright since I can use that to put me back at square one, I don't think I need any recovery images on the phone then, but Can anyone give me some steps to achieve a barebones experience on for the device (want to remove all the bloatware, unnecessary background services, etc that come stock on the phone)
Any help is appreciated thanks
If you can find a ROM .img file, you can flash via adb, but it's just easier to use a custom recovery. Try Philz recovery (in dev section). I know some other devices have special ROMS without phone apps, but I haven't seen one for the AHD. Go with the most vanilla AOSP ROM you can find and install a root tool like ROM Toolbox that lets you uninstall system apps. You can freeze the phone app and any other app you don't want. If freezing doesn't mess up the device, go ahead and uninstall (at your own risk, obviously. I nor anyone else on this forum will be responsible if you mess it up). ROM Toolbox also lets you select what processes you want to run at startup. Hope this helps.
