and was peeing on the other side of the bathroom when i heard the sickening sound of glass sliding and watched in horror as the phone slid off the top of the paper towel holder and dropped about 6 feet to the tile floor landing flat on the front glass, bounced up and landed flat on the back. the sound it made hurt my soul..i actually turned away as it clattered as lots of dark and sad thoughts went through my head.
after i pulled my pants up and washed my hands..i walked slowly over to the phone dreading what i was going to find.
to my immense surprise..there's not even a scratch on either side. so take this as anecdotal evidence the phone glass is not all that fragile.
WISH MY DAMN CASE WOULD GET HERE ALREADY!!! I'm gonna tear this stupid phone up before it arrives.
Yeah, the glass on the back, while not as slippery as the front, is still ridiculously slippery. I have to be careful what I set mine on, or fwwwooop, off it goes in slow and accelerating motion. Even things like pillows that ought to have some friction.
Really looking forward to my case, too. I'm way too afraid to carry it around and use it.
Good to hear yours wasn't broken!
I bet you were pretty....

there isn't a flagship device out there that doesn't have a "OMG glass breaks/scratches easily" thread. i have learned to ignore them.
I don't understand, why would you put a phone on a paper towel holder? Also, why is your paper towel holder 6 feet high?

public bathroom.
habit. my hd2 had a rubber case around it and i always carried it in my hand..never put it in my pockets ever..always lay it down near me when i'm in restroom.
i know..stupid habit..but i got lucky. i stopped putting it in my pocket because the rubber/silicon cover always collected lint and if i was wearing tight jeans it would sometimes pull the cover off when pulling it out.
This is the most suspenseful thing I have ever read.

No offense, but what is with everyone on XDA and complaining about the glass on this phone and then having some story like "I was jumping on a trampoline surrounded by rocks and lo and behold my phone just happened to slip out and explode!"
Dang, I guess I'm a bit more conservative with my phone because it's always in my pocket with a case and screen protector, setting it on things is a no go!

Nice, I'm glad it was a happy ending. I had my N4 in a pouch on my lap when I was driving and it fell when I got out of the car. No damage.
Speaking of bathroom stories, my GN fell off my knee on to the tile and spider cracked the screen. So sad.
... And my NS has hit the ground around a hundred times and is still solid. Greatest device ever made. DAC.

I went out tonight to a movie. I put my phone in my pocket when I left the house, took it out once to put it on vibrate at the start of the movie then took it out of my pocket again when I got home. The phone was the only thing in that pocket, so it's not like it was up against my keys or anything.
The phone was intact when I put it on vibrate so while it was in my pocket at some point during the movie or the ride home is when it got cracked.
It seems that the part of the glass that's cut out for the loud speaker got pushed in enough that the glass around it gave way and shattered. I don't remember bumping it on anything or it being jostled in any way, just a typical movie and drive home...
I have insurance on it through Tmobile but I may try and call LG directly first to see if they will do anything considering I didn't drop it or really abuse it in any way that I can think of...
So let this be a warning to you if you have one, be careful about that part of the phone. Maybe be careful to put it facing screen-side-out in your pocket so the back speaker cut out can't be bumped...
The glass around the speaker grill is entirely shattered with cracks spider webbing from it to all 4 corners of the screen. The cracks going to the top are hard to see in the pictures, but their there.
Anyone have any comments or suggestions about contacting LG, or anything else about it?

That does not seem like Gorilla Glass anymore. Don't think I've ever heard of a phone just magically breaking without any kind of impact.
How the hell did that happen in a pocket? Hmm
I don't think that the backside of the phone is made from gorilla glass, only the screen. But you still should contact LG, because no way it should blow up like that.
Hope that they change it for you

I was babying this phone as much as possible, it was the only thing in that pocket and I made sure not to use it when over cement or anything in case it did fall.
But this happened while it was INSIDE my pocket, I even had to empty some of the glass shards out of my pocket when I noticed what had happened...

Haha, no skinny jeans, and it was in my front left pocket.
There was no stress at all that I can think of. When I took it out of my pocket at home to text someone the back felt rough and I thought something was on it, but when i turned it around to look I saw it all cracked. I was 100% surprised to see that considering how I had babied it all night and I didn't even use it the entire night.
There was no case because none are sold yet. When I bought it the store said they would be getting the cases (bumpers I guess) in stock next week, I was going to call them Monday to see if they had any yet, and I still will but I don't expect them to get any until mid week.

Front pocket, and no sitting on my side, just in a movie theater seat then my car seat.
I wish I could just "not buy" it too, but it happened....
Like I said in my first post, it looks like a typical crack you would get from tempered glass when the stress point is hit, and it looks like around that speaker cut out is a stress point. The thing is, it wasn't hit, bumped, dropped, or anything else like that.
If you were the insurance company or LG I would understand not trusting me, but why do I have to gain by not telling the truth here?
Chances are you can just exchange it under warranty, not insurance.

I told everyone in my other post that the glass is BS because it got scratched by itself, just being in the pocket and on the table... But almost everyone laughed at my warning...
So yesterday I nearly destroyed my phone by placing it on my leather wallet. After doing so, I went to the kitchen and after around ten minutes I heard a loud noise of something smashing on the ground. It was my N4 that slowly slipped from my wallet. Luckily, it just hit the chair and not the ground and I only have a minor scratch in the metal bezel. After some testing I found that the glass back is stupidly slippery. It even starts to slide when the surface has quite a lot of grip. I think this is due to the coating of the glass. Funny enough, it feels really nonslip and safe holding it in the hand. So be careful where you place your phone!

Yeah, I Put a case on mine.
Why the hell is Google putting glass on the back is beyond me. I guess none of them own an Iphone 4/4S or never heard of constant broken back glass from it. This is one slippery phone and a finger print magnet.
My iPhone 4S has slipped quite a few ties doing exactly that- sitting on my leather wallet. Luckily, I havent managed to crack it. I hope the Nexus 4 has a strong back.
Bummer... I have to get a case soon.
I put mine on my desk to charge, and the weight of the USB cable was enough to make the phone slither off the desk like a snake. Happened twice actually, I blamed the cats the first time. This phone is too smooth
Until you get a case or if you do not want to get a case then you could go to walmart, target or home depot etc. and get some of the small round rubber feet they put on boxes and vases to keep them from scratching tables and stick one in each corner of the back. They will keep the phone from sliding and help the speaker from getting so muffled when laying flat.

Same thing happened to me the very night I got it. Was watching a movie in my recliner and had the phone in the arm of my chair. Shifted slightly, heard a thump, jumped in horror.
The phone had slid down between the arm and seat of the chair, fell through, hit the wood frame on the way down. Nice big tick in my chrome bezel right next to the volume rocker to show for it.

Definitely very slippery - slipped from my hand as I was handing it to my wife to look at ~5min after unboxing. landed on the corner on our hardwood floor and spiderwebbed the back.
A case will cover it and the front is fine so it could have been much worse. I'll just wait until replacement glass backs are available

The glue used on those things like to slip, especially if they become warm like with the body temperature the phone will reach in someone's pocket. And then that glue leaves behind residue along the slippage path.
Did we really need a thread to tell people to be careful where they put their phone?

So last night I dropped my phone for the first time. There was this pan sticking out from the table that was very hot and I moved my hand really fast away from the pan and my phone went flying out of my and the worst part my phone hit the floor. No cracked screen Damage wasn't bad but I have these light scratches on the screen and one little scratch on the top left conner of the phone. The drop was bad and I'm surprised the damage wasn't greater then it was. Anyone else drop there phone yet? The scratches are so light I think i can buff them out with wax but will that mess up the coating on the gorilla glass? What's everyones input or stories?

I dropped mine last nite. I was sitting on a chair on the patio smoking, and I was asked to do something. I forgot that the phone was in my lap and stood up. It flew across the patio landed on cement, slid, and I cringed.
Picked it up and not a scractch. SOOOo happy.
I spent like 20 minutes going over it with a fine tooth comb too.

Bro that looks good! Honestly theres noting wrong with damaging your phone as long as its not too bad. Before you could re sell phones but with this starting out so cheep I doubt it's even worth being extra careful with it. Whats the point of having the inconvenience of a case for an entire year when you're probably just going to move on anyways? And like I said, that is minor damage, I wouldn't hardly stress it.
That's not that bad! Though consider yourself lucky as there are people who have cracked/shattered phones and they have no idea why...

Imagine that! Some people ate getting cracks from placing then shown softly. Others are getting started that apart out of nowhere. You actually drop yours and the glad is totally in fact and fine! I don't know how that weak gorilla glass could stand up to it! You should post this in that weak gorilla glass thread.

So, I was one of the lucky 2-3 weekers who've just gotten their phones. I opened it last night, and spent a ton of time setting it up and whatnot. Today, after having it in my pocket for about two hours, I met with a horrible sight.
Seems I had some pretty nasty lint in my pocket. That, coupled with skinny jeans, did not make for a happy Nexus 4. I'm going to call into Google/LG soon and see what they have to say about it. Fingers crossed!

LG/Google isn't going to do anything. It's your fault for having it scratched and damaged, nothing that came from them. That's what they would say.
As far as putting your phone in your pocket, it should be clean and at least have a case to elevate it so the screen never touches the pocket. (in my opinion) I have the screen facing towards the outer part of the pocket.
How the fack did that happen???
Sucks for you. lol

Dude I wear skinny jeans and the only time I have scratched my phone was when 1. I feel of a cliff, long story, and only suffered a scratch less than a cm long in my SII, and 2. When my Gnex skid out of my pocket when I was driving and feel onto a bunch of sand and rocks that was below my seat and only had a very small scratch and everyone knows how fragile the Gnex screen is

Cant see any scratches. Had mine for 2 weeks. No case and I put it in my pocket too and so far just 1 very faint scratch on the back and a tiny nick on the bezel. You wont see them unless you are looking for it. I don't plan to buy a case. The phone is just too beautiful to cover up plus I am tired of selling my pristine case protected phones to next man for a quarter of the original price. From now on, If you are buying a used phone from me, the phone will have been properly used

damn, that sucks. I did not put mine to use until I had a pouch or case for it. It stayed in the box. Now I have a pouch from SFbags.com and the Diztronic case.
That there is karma for even wearing skinny jeans.
Harden up.
A few screen protectors fill those in. I know xoskins does.

I guess skinny jeans are tougher then keys, a box cutter, coins and a wrench!
I've had the factory screen protectors on, and noticed I have small scratches on the naked portion of the back where the camera is
I left my factory screen protectors on it until I could put zagg extreme protectors on it. I can beat on it with a hammer and no damage. It's good stuff but if you keep your phone naked guess what .....scratches and broken glass. Then everyone complains about it come on guys protect your investment if not get used to looking at scratched scuffed glass. Google shouldn't have to replace phones out of stupidity

Hi everyone, first of all I have to say that I don´t speak English very well but I will try to do my best.
I wanted to share what recently I discover in my Nexus 6 unit, hopefully someone can tell me if they are having the same issue.
I have never dropped my cellphone, the mayority of the days I carry my Nexus 6 in the pocket of my jacket, and ocassionaly in the front pocket of my pants, never in the back pocket.
Currently Im in conversation with the Motorola support team, I hope they can replace my unit, but I want to know what do you think.
*** The texts in the pictures are in Spanish, because I send that ones to Motorola, but basically they show the curvature of the cellphone in the left metal frame side and the screen at its center point.
No offense but... it looks like you sat on it. Without some type of force metal is not going to bend itself.
Did you anger a girlfriend or wife?

Haha no I dont.
I know that it sounds weird but as I said before I only carry it in my front pocket a few times for the fear of the Iphone 6P bendgate and look :c, I never had my N6 in the back pocket, it couldt fit anyways.
Also If I have sat on it as you say, maybe my screen and corners should ended like the other bendgate N6 post.
It's a curved phone. Your screen doesn't look bent.
I saw this phone brand new and it does have a curve to it. Your phone is fine

That's the normal curvature of the phone. Mine looks just like that and it is brand new, never used. That was done on purpose to make the phone more ergonomically comfortable if you were ever to hold it to your ear to talk on the phone.
It does looked bent on the second last pic to me.
at first it looked fine but on the side shots you can clearly see the metal frame buckled out where the bend occurred .

I don't see it, but this phone is quite frankly too big to put in your front pocket and sit down unless your pants are very loose.
If you are wearing tight clothing, idk what anyone expects if they put it in their front pants pockets and sit down.

Never has any issues with this phone in my front pocket and my jeans aren't baggy. If you're a hipster with skinny jeans, you'll likely have a problem.

That's what I am sayin'.
The bend in the side is even pointed out in the first picture. It is clearly bent.
