Wipes before flash? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody!
I have a question belonging the wipes before flashing a ROM:
Which data do I have to wipe in order to have a clean Rom flash?
And, do I loose my game data ( gl2sd ) on internal- and or on extSD?
Which data will o lose?
Thanks for help.

Hello! To do a clean install you have to: Wipe data/Factory reset; Wipe cache; Wipe Dalvik cache; Mounts and storage->format /data; format /system; format /preload. First, make sure you are on a SAFE kernel! You can search for safe kernels here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789397
When wiping, you will lose unsaved data like: Contacts, SMS/MMS, Call log, Applications, saves for games (only if they aren't backed up ofcourse). Pictures, music etc on Internal storage or Ext.SD card won't be touced. For backing up you can use Titanium or other software.
Have fun flashing roms!

its always better to do a nandroid backup.. before formatting as this will also save your call logs. contacts ans SMSs and many many more. TB can restore then back using the nandroid backup./

Very good question
Wiping factory data will erase all apps and contacts / SMS / call log
if your contacts are synced with google, you will restore them as soon as you log into your google account when u flash a new ROM
to make sure you're synced with google.. check contacts saved on PHONE by checking (contacts to display) option and if there were any there, make sure u choose (Merge with google) -- that way all your contacts will be synced with google
then do SYNC ALL from accounts menu in settings to make sure everything is synced
you can also backup SMS and call log into Titanium by using (backup XML) option when u press the menu key on titanium
but most importantly, before you flash a new ROM.. make sure you open Titanium batch backup and backup (1) new and modified app (2) modified data
so that your backups are fresh and updated
Best of luck

[Q] [I9001]Do i need to wipe all my data to instal a new kernel??

Hi
Have a i9001 s+ and i am using sky high kernel but it has errors such as random reboot so i want to move to Cranium RC9 But do i have to wipe all my data, non or just some. and if i do can i just restore them (apps, settings and i can just put my sdcard files on my pc) from a FeaMod Back up ??
Thanks
p.s. can i just back up all my apps to my pc????
No.....just wipe dalvik cache.....................................
no you don't need wipe data (neither wipe Dalvik, I used to do it without it on my SGS I9000.)
To backup your apps you can use Titanium backup. Its created a file with all your apps backed and you can restore all of them just by installing titanium backup an running the restore task. (on my SGS I9000, I suppose it's the same on your phone)
Thanks so can i just go ahead and install it and it will be fine and not wipe and apps or data (should i back up incase)
is there a reson pepol say to whipe cashes or is it a precauton ( what will this actuly do)
thanks
oh
just wipe the partion cache

[Q] Installing Custom ROM - Backup Question

Hey guys. I want to install my first custom ROM (Rocket ROM). The other day, I finally rooted and installed CWM. I then used CWM to make a backup to my external SD card. I was still on the factory kernel so I upgraded to the latest Samsung release (XLC1 non-wipe Germany). Now when I boot into CRM I see no option to backup. Also, when I launch the app, I get an error tat the kernel is unsupported. Was I supposed to re-install CWM after I upgraded to the new official ROM?
In any case, I am really only concerned about backing up my photos, music, SMS, SNote, and contacts. I don't care about the applications since I can reinstall them. I used Kies to do a compete backup. Am I correct in assuming I can do the following then:
1.) Boot into CRM
2.) Perform wipe data/all
3.) Install RocketROM
4.) Update to RocketROM 2.3
4b) OPTIONALLY install Speedmod kernel
5.) Restore sms, contacts, etc from Kies
WIll this work ok? Since I don't have a ROM backup and if something fails, can I just boot into recovery mode and reinstall again?
Again, my biggest concern is recovering my sms, contacts, photos, snote, etc. I don't care about apps or other settings.
Thanks!
Contact - backup with inbuilt Import/Export function
SMS - SMS backup restore application is good option(if kies do this thn fine, i never used kies)
Snote, you need to backup with titanium(read properly , i think lite version also works)
Music, photos remains in USB storage, so it won't erase on flashing ROM

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm still a little confused. in Kies, the backup option has checkboxes for Contacts, SMS, and Snote. When I rooted and installed the stock ROM, I lost all of my SMemos. I just restored them now and they are all there. Do you mean I need Titanium for the SMemo application? Is that not included in RocketROM? The video I saw on YouTube seems to show it.
A full wipe won't delete photos or music?
Thanks again!
If it is(smemo) restored from kies then what is problem now?
I said titanium can backup Smemo. I dont know whether it is preinstalled in Rocket ROM as i have never used custom ROM.
Routine flashing won't wipe photos N music, If manually you format your SD card, then only it gets erased.

[Q] Custom ROM upgrade problem :(

Hi guys I'm new to this forum but i've been a CD-ROM for years...
I have question about upgrading ViperROM to 6.2.1
I'm currently using ViperROM 2.7.0 with sense 5.0
Android 4.2.2
I use Titinium Pro to backup all my apps and....
my question is....how to upgrade from 2.7 to 6.2.1 the easiest way?
without any data lost?
do i have to use the data backup from ROM or i can just use the titaniumPRO for full backup?
please advice
I always copy and paste the contents of the sdcard to a folder for safe keeping on my laptop or usb drive. I wipe, data, cache, dalvik cache, system and user partitions. Reboot recovery, use adb sideload to send the rom.zip over and flash. Setup the phone and copy and paste everything back. The whole process takes min. 25-30 minutes. Works for me /shrugs, just my 2 pennies.
I would follow @DeathAngel66669 advice it is very solid. I also use Titanium Pro to quickly add back my USER APPS only with data. Never restore system apps.

I'm just concerning about my User App data, (whatsapp image, convo history)
so i can just do titanium pro and wipe the phone? cool!
Whatsapp etc backs up it's own data to a folder in your internal storage, when you reinstall it and set it up it will say backup found would you like to restore. Just make sure you don't wipe internal storage.
You could also try and dirty flash as you are on viper one already, just go into advanced wipe and wipe your caches only, do not factory reset and when installing the Rom also select don't wipe data partition.
But again as the others have said, make sure it's backed up first, if a dirty flash doesn't work, you'll be left with no choice but to reflash and wipe along the way.

Backing up data in SS?

Does backing up data in SS and restoring it after flashing a new ROM will 100 percent restore all of my data? What are the things that I need to backup separately? Sms, contacts, account,..etc?

If your're using B03, the latest safestrap, then everything except the "data/media" folder is backed up, which is your internal storage. As long as you only "Swipe factory Reset" and just flash a ROM, and do not "Format" or "Wipe" data, then your storage will not be wiped, and will always be there. Backing up "Data" will backup everything else including your Settings, SMS, and Contacts, so a full restore from that backup (Restoring System, Cache, Data) should bring your phone back to the exact state where it was in before you did the backup.
If you're using B01, the first safestrap, then everything else is the same, except "data/media" is also backed up, which can make the backup much larger.

TWRP backup location

Folks
I did a full backup of system, data, etc on TWRP (2.66gb total folder size) - can I assume that should I corrupt my phone somehow, I can restore from this and the phone will be in the exact state when I did the backup - all apps, logins, etc intact?
Also, I do weekly backups with titanium free edition - does titanium does the same thing or should I still do the above every few months?
Thanks

It's a complete "snapshot" of your phone as it was when you took it.
No titianium does not do the same thing. Titanium backs up individual apps and their respective data so you can restore individual apps or all apps at once. It's benefit is when switching roms where you have to wipe the phone and you can just restore your user apps without restoring any system data
I use the app ultimate backup to back up apps and data and I use the TWRP backups just as a safety measure before flashing a new ROM or update.......
I like to start a fresh you see with a new ROM, and then just install ultimate backup again, move over the back up data that I previously copied to my PC, and restore them, and this basically returns everything to how it was before due to the launcher, Nova, and its settings also being restored.
