Long story short, att messed up and ended up crediting me the price of my upgrade ($220) and pushing up my upgrade to eligible.
Ive had my eye on the one since it first was rumored but haven't heard much from people who actually have it.
Soo.... How is it? Should i use my newly obtained upgrade for this or should i wait it out some..

See what people think.
Excellent, I've not regretted choosing it - it's all I wanted.
I've upgraded from a Sammy S2. My primary phone usage is actually as a media player... A bit of on demand telly, but mostly listening to mp3s at work, and podcasts when I'm having a soak in the bath or lazing around at home.
The stereo speakers make such a difference, as does the Beats processing. It's a world away from the tinny output of the Samsung (which was in most other aspects an excellent phone, especially when I had Cyanogen on it to freshen it up)
Build quality is excellent, it really does feel great. Still not quite as impressive as an iPhone 4 though, but the best of the rest.
The screen is pin sharp. I'd like the automatic brightness to be biased a little brighter though (or customisable)
The Ui is truly butter smooth (Xperia z I tried in the shop was a lag-fest and very disappointing in comparison)
Blink feed is actually pretty good. I've always used Taptu for my news feed. Blink is allegedly going to be improved in the future.. It won't take much improvement to supplant Taptu entirely.
I've barely scratched the surface of Zoe, but it's impressed me so far. I've not even tried the Highlight options yet.
The camera seems to take good pictures, especially in low light... The flash hasn't kicked in for me yet!
Sense 5 is well designed, it looks good. I like the way the app drawer contents can be viewed in multiple ways and a custom view set up.
The phone must be powerful - it seems to play Real Racing 3 as well as my iPad - very impressive!
Battery life has seemed good, it doesn't eat battery on standby, but does during heavy use.. Which is understandable. I don't think I have enough experience to really say if it's good or bad compared to other phones, but its not died unexpectedly on me.
The phone seems stable... No crashes or lockups... Pretty good for such a new phone?
My gripes?
The phone got very, very hot when using Navigation whilst charging, with satellite image layer turned on.
I miss the menu button. and the Sammys physically clickable home button.. a bit.
I'd like the back and home buttons to be permanently lit, they don't show in bright or medium lighting.
I summary, yes I'd definitely buy this again if I had the choice
This is my third Android phone, previously owned Desire HD, One X (Tegra 3 - international version).
Only had One for two weeks, but so far really happy with it, no problems with build quality or functions.
Would go as far as to say it's the best phone I've owned.

i love my htc one. I picked it up a week ago. I've had iphones for the passed 4 years and didnt fancy the 5.
I went in to pick up an xperia z, but changed my mind for the one.
Ive used it more or less constantly since I got it, it has not crashed once, its fantastic.
I wasnt sure after ios for so long Id get on with it, but I love it. Il list why,
The speakers are fantastic, it really sounds great. The music player is impressive
The camera takes nice looking photos, the colours seem perfect. Theres alot to the camera I havent played with yet.
Everything is lag free, not just lag free, but impressively fast.
Blinkfeed is quite nice, although when I grab my phone to do something I end end up reading interesting news instead
I like android a lot more than I though I would.
Its an amazing phone. Hard to put it down. I looked through all the available phones, to me it was the winner, it is beautiful
The screen is just awesome.
Battery life has been good, it lasts as long as youd expect it to.
Sorry if i sound like a htc one sales man. its a lovely phone. Get one

It rocks! Best phone I've had (coming from a Sensation)
Great battery life
Incredible camera
Beautiful design
Smooth & fast
There is a lot more to it but those are the winning points for me!
Best phone i've ever had.
One massive thing i've noticed with the camera is that you don't have to stay super still for shots. The shutter is so fast i think it's the first phone i've ever come across with a LED flash that actually competes with cameras that have a xenon flash.
I went out last night and each picture i took in a low lit pub was superb, genuinely amazed at the camera and its quickness.
The Boomsound is awesome, the phone is so fast, the camera is great and the screen is A class. Literally the best phone i've ever had and the best purchase i've made in a long time.
I am soooo chuffed i got this and not the Z ( just for its waterproof feature ) which id probably never use.
I think the only thing that worries me is the battery life, is it atleast in the 8hr range with moderate to heavy use?

Hmmm, tricky to say - I've not spent more than an hour in one go where I've used the phone heavily (constantly browsing / watching video / downloading apps etc), but haven't been within reach of a charger and a power point. My Sammy S2 often ate battery even when in standby so I bought extra chargers and distributed them around the house
However... my experience of checking the battery usage graph when it's unplugged is that
1) the line is nicely horizontal when in standby
2) the line doesn't resemble a cliff when the screen is on and I'm doing something.
If you want some rather more scientific results, best check the reviews... I recommend the Anandtech review here. It's a great piece of tech writing

The Xperia Z, a lag fest? Keep telling yourself that. Whatever makes you feel comfortable with your purchase.

Can't really fault it too be honest, still in a love/hate relationship with blinkfeed but other than that it's not skipped a bit, zero lag and everything is super smooth no matter what you throw at it.
Minor gripe is that htc really do need to put back in the option for long press back for menu.

I was actually going to buy an Xperia Z as the idea of a waterproof phone really appealed to me (listening to podcasts in the bath). But I was sorely disappointed when I tried the Z in a couple of shops the scrolling between home screens noticeably hiccuped. Now, sure, I don't know what the rest of the phone is like, but that was enough to put me off straight away. After all if the software isn't smooth on something like that, hopes aren't going to be high about the rest of the phone. The One is smooth everywhere.
I suspect the only person telling themselves anything to keep themselves happy with their purchase is you, but it's no skin off my nose...
Edit: in retrospect 'lag-fest' in my previous post was a poor choice of words - an exaggeration. But it did, to some extent, reflect my initial impression of the phone. Perhaps, to nick the tag line of a fast food outlet,"where's the butter?" would do the trick.
Are there differences between the variants? Like will there be att, sprint, tmobile, and international development or is it all gonna be together?
Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 2
There will be variants for different radio types (CDMA vs GSM) and LTE bands. The dev edition is aimed at ATT, and I don't think will fully support T-Mobile (I don't remember seeing 1700 in the specs). Best to check compatibility before buying.

I am due a phone upgrade back in the UK when i get back from the states next month and similar to almost everyone in recent months after a pretty substantial amount of research i am torn between the One and the S4.
I am upgrading from a very well used S2 that has been very good to me, in fact it is the first phone that i have had on a 2 year contract that has not seemed woefully inadequate towards the end of its life
I am learning more towards the One due to the glass screen cracking issues on the S4, i believe that no phone should break the internal screen with any damage to the external glass, that to me screams poor manufacture/design. Also i have this odd feeling that Samsung have not tried as well as they could this year!
So a few things that concern me about the One before i sign on the dotted line...
1. Battery life, my S2 rarely made it through the day so i carried a spare with me, has battery technology moved on enough that this is no longer a problem? I have looked at plenty of battery tests but i prefer to hear real world usage, i am no power user!
2. Slow charging, it is my understanding that HTC did not use Qualcomms quick charging wizardry to speed up charging, while this is irrelevant for the standard overnight charge does it mean that if i use my phone as a GPS sat nav with a car charger, will the battery drain faster than it charges?
3. 4mp camera, I get what HTC are doing with this, it makes sense as looking through my gallery many of my photos are in low light/portraits. However, it seems to rely on some clever software and as a guy who will probably put stock android on to his phone with 6 months, will this ever work properly with AOSP, or will you have to stick to a HTC rom to keep an acceptable camera?
4. This is a bit of an odd one... having had an Android phone since the HTC Hero, I must have had to pull the battery out a million times to get out of a freeze, how the hell do you do that with this? Also how is everyone finding the lack of removable storage? In the past it has been a life saver being able to load a new ROM to a card, pop it in and rescue a phone that refuses to boot.
5. Has anyone used this with HTC Connect? I have recently bought a Pioneer A4 speaker which is compatible with the standard, so if it is a better system than DLNA it might swing it for me!
Thank you in advance, all opinions welcome!
1. For me it has been really good. It usually lasts me the whole day and I'm a heavy user (4-5H screen on, facebook messenger + whatsapp + Skype + tapatalk 4 + few games and lots of YouTube). When I pushed my battery to the limit to test it I got 10H screen on time.
2. Yes, the fast charging is indeed disabled as it can also harm the battery, and this battery can't be swapped. It won't drain faster than charge though
3. I don't use aosp, but it'll work just fine afaik
4. Holding the powerbutton for 10 sec will simulate battery pull. It has this bug though that it'll work only when it's in bright light (very weird).
Lack of storage expansion is not as bad as I thought it'd be. Just remember to ALWAYS have a Rom copy on it just in case
5. Sorry can't answer this one...

Hey all,
reason I ask is that I've had the phone for about 4-5 months and I'm already disenchanted by the overall experience.
Battery life is an odd one as it changes on a day to day basis (Obviously), but the general issue is that some days I can use it all the time without issue, another day like today it's been on for an hour and a half, and it's dropped to 96%
On the subject of battery I needed to use my phone for car navigation and even with it plugged into a 1.5 mah charger it kept dropping. slower but still going down this is the same amp-age as the wall charger from Sony.
so that's one thing.
other thing is the general day to day use.
I thought the waterproofing would be useful in hindsight it's a pain in the arse, as the door flaps are awkward to open when your hopping in and out of our vehicle, and I listen to a lot of music so the headphone plug sees a lot of action in my pocket, not broken but it's a poor design after extended use.
Now the next bit is probably going to get the fans of this phone up in arms, but I'll say it anyway.
I wish I had waited a few weeks longer for the S4 by Samsung, I had the Note 2 before hand and the battery life was exceptional even with constant use, and the the design while unimaginative in design and materials fitted the bill perfectly.
So do you regret getting the Xperia Z and if so why, and would you / are you going to change and if so what?
Never. For the battery issues, I rooted my phone and have better power control with CPU Tuner. So far the battery can last 2 to 3 days on my general usage.
As for the waterproof, I looooove it sooo much. The phone stays with me all the time, even when I was taking bath. Having the phone to be waterproof, I feel no worries in case I need to handle the phone with wet hands.
i wouldnt say i regret buying the z but i would say that i am disappointed with couple of things in the phone .
for example the camera : whatever users say but deep down everyone will agree its pure rubbish , they have really messed up with the camera be it with any settings.
battery life : you are right about the battery life , some times its normal and sometimes it drops 3-4 percent very quickly , betterbatterystats shows different wake up everyday even though i use the same apps and do the same stuff everyday on the phone.
wifi signal : plain HORRIBLE !
yup every phone has its shortcomings and xperia z has these shortcomings , but i am not regretting buying the phone but yes disappointed with certain things which they could have definitely done it better.
i replaced my phone 6 days after buying due to the sides "popping" up. other than that i'm pretty satisfied with the phone and the custom rom developments on it
i dont regret..its an awesome experience day after day, getting even better.
yeah the rom developments is really fast as compared to my S3 LTE. barely have much rom to play with
No I don't regret buying it, but sad of SONY's service.

Battery life sometimes can be dissapointing. Camera is so-so.
Other than that I'm satisfied.
Seems my gripes are the same as you guys.
Well it confirms that this isn't my mind playing, the grass is greener on the other side.
I'm very disappointed at the camera as this was one of my reasons for my purchase, and well the battery is starting to piss me off as if i'm away from home for long I end up home with 3 % left.
I'll be getting a i-9505 soon.

What is everybody comparing the camera to? I have had A LOT of phones (see my sig) recently and I think the camera is better than anything except the Pureview 808. Having said that, I will take the other features, most noteably Android and Google Services over the other features in the Nokia, even the 1020.
After playing with my cousin's s4, the only I thing I like about the s4 is the camera features. Never regretted buying the Z when it was launched here and not waiting for the s4. I will only regret if there's something s4 can do that my Z can't in general. Since I got my wireless Internet, my battery life has been much better than before. With 3g I get around 4 and a half hours plus of screen on. Haven't test fully with wifi but currently on wifi, I'm on 70 percent with almost 2 hours of screen on time without uc and uv.

Im dissapointed with the sound quality over the headphones. But looking at other phones, things are same or worst. Iphone is the best in that matter but It can't compete with XZ at this stage. Appart from that, battery could be better for sure. Camera is only ok in a good light conditions. I dont regreet buying ZX. Other phones have their adv. and dis.

I agree the camera is sub par along with the battery.
BUT this phone has a unique feel when held naked AND the screen is fantastic. The biggest positive for me is that this is the first android device that does not have any lag when texting regardless of keyboard used.

I consider the XZ sound quality out of the headphone jack to be very good. Well ahead of the S and almost on par of that of the Walkman Z, Sony's top Walkman player.
Speaker quality is another story. It is awful. But it might have an explanation, water resistance, you know.
i regret getting it because i preordered it for 749 AUD
the stock firmware is horrible
the camera is mediocre
and the battery life has gone terrible since 4.2.2
the phone gets hot, like, 60 degrees celsius on the cpu doing web browsing
also the wifi is a pain in the ass.
i wish i waited a bit of the gs4 as well, but i was desperate because my incredible S broke and i was using a nokia lol
i don't regret at all and im a proud owner of my xperia z
I've had the One for a few months, and just got the N5.
There is no question the One has better screen, speakers, and front-facing camera, but I find the back camera on N5 better (contrary to numerous reviews), at least in part due to the One's purple tinting issue. Both devices are nearly identical in width with case on. So +1 to N5 for managing a larger screen.
Also, the N5 rarely heats up, even while in a case. I ran browsermark on both, and the N5 not only scored ~300 points higher, but was barely warm to the touch when the One, with its bareback bumper case on, was nice and toasty. This may be of high importance in terms of battery life as heat = wasted energy.
The next thing to test was the supposed improvements in music playback battery life via audio tunneling. I listen to a lot of music, so this was one of the biggest selling points for me.
Here's the set up:
1. Upload an album in FLAC to Google Music
2. Download on each phone (high quality, probably 320k?)
3. Turn off all radio and kill all non-essential background processes
4. Adjust the volume to be roughly the same (One is a little louder) using the same headphones
5. Plug in the same 3.5mm cable on each (I had two of those, but not two of the same headphones)
6. Let them play
Here are the results:
Time elapsed: 6.5hrs
Battery diff on N5: 14%; expected total play time: 46hrs
Battery diff on One: 16%; expected total play time: 40hrs
Well, to put it lightly, I was disappointed. 6 hours of total play time differential simple wouldn't be enough to sacrifice all those things I had stated above. That's when I suspected possible battery calibration issue(s).
I fully powered down the phones and back on, and the One's battery dropped by 2% while the N5 stayed the same. Huh?
I did that a few more times until the One's number "settled," i.e. stopped dropping so dramatically.
Battery diff at this point was 16% on N5 and a whopping 24% on the One. Now that's more like it.
So I decided to repeat the test, now that things seem settled. Here are the results of phase 2:
Time elapsed: 4.5hrs
Battery diff on N5: 8%; expected total play time: 56hrs
Battery diff on One: 12%; expected total play time: 37.5hrs
Not exactly twice the run time, but 50% more from the same capacity battery is nothing to scoff at. Notice the battery between the two tests are remarkably consistent: 16% vs 24% and 8% vs 12%.
I'm gonna be carrying the N5 around to see how the signal is, but given how much time I spend listening to music on my phone, I might be set for now.

How can you assume 56 hours of total playback without running it that long. Battery discharge isn't linear. If you go from 100% to 92%(8%) and that gets you 4.5 hours then 8% of a lower battery won't get you nearly as long. That means that going from like 30% to 22%(also 8%) won't get you the same 4.5 hours. You might get, just for example, 3.5 hours on 8%. Batteries discharge faster the more discharged they are. Look at the battery graph sometime and you will see that it gets steeper the closer the battery gets to being dead.

I understand the discharge isn't linear, but the point of this test was not to get the playback time of one device, but rather to compare how the two devices perform. So I didn't see the need to meticulously take all of that into account rather than doing simple math.
On two separate occasions the N5 did 1.5x better, so I think this is a pretty good indication that I can play music longer on the N5 than I could on the One.

It totally matters. You say that the Nexus 5 did 1.5x better but you calculated that based on a 4.5 and 6.5 hours. Because batteries discharge at a non-linear rate that claim of 1.5x longer is VERY inaccurate. It isn't an accurate and fair comparison.

You have a point, but in reality can you ACTUALLY test music playback without using your phone AT ALL for 20-30+ hours to drain the phone from 100% to 0% ? For someone like me who only has one phone, I can't even perform this test as I need to kill all my radios and I need incoming phone calls/messages/e-mail/regular stuff
And you have to give OP credit for trying to reduce the variables.

Lots of reasons? Like???
Both phones are basically the same size but the Nexus 5 has a bigger screen.
Both have a 2,300mAh battery but from the reports I've seen so far the Nexus 5 gets slightly better battery life than the One.
The Nexus 5 has a better camera. I've read lots of posts of people saying that the One camera suffers from a purplish tint on all the pictures it takes.
The Nexus 5 is infected with that Sense crap.
The only possible benefit i can see of the One is the better sounding speakers but unless you are one of those rude people that blasts everything out of their phone speakers and annoying everyone around you I don't see that to be much of a deal. No one wants to listen to your conversations, music, movies, etc. Get a pair of headphones.

I have a one. Pictures in low light have issues, daylight pics came out very good. Focus and shutter speed on the one is instant. It's very slow on the N5, I hope they fix that.

Just got a nexus 5 after a few hours of use... I'm leaning towards returning it and going back to my One. Miss the build quality and speakers. And isn't the one getting kit Kat in two months. I was able to get best buy to price match Google they weren't suppose to. For the price its an excellent phone thought.

I think both phones are awesome. I actually sold my HTC One a month before the Nexus 5 came out. I think it just depends on user preference when it comes down to which phone is better. I think the heat issue on the HTC One was more prevalent because of the metal casing of the phone, and the Nexus 5 would have the same problem if it also had a metal body.
At the end of the day I love my Nexus 5, and I'm sure there will be future updates to fix the issues people are currently having.

As long as your have the Google Play edition of the One I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea.

It totally matters. You say that the Nexus 5 did 1.5x better but you calculated that based on a 4.5 and 6.5 hours. Because batteries discharge at a non-linear rate that claim of 1.5x longer is VERY inaccurate. It isn't an accurate and fair comparison.

Inaccurate? Sure, but like (think) I made clear, I'm not about to do a full on research.
I also realized that I didn't mention this: I did not charge the battery between the two tests, which means I tested both mid-upper and low-mid echelons of battery level. And again, the difference is 1.5x for each case.
Non-linearity would have mattered more if one discharged faster at lower level than another, but the consistency of my results seem to say otherwise, i.e. N5 does better than the One when just looking at music playback.

I'm probably gonna do another test when Kitkat is realeased for the Google Play edition. Not sure if the DSP in s600 supports audio tunneling though (or rather, if Google will support).
I have a red htc one and it dosent get hot but my silver onr did? I think it comes.down to user preference. I personally listen to alot of music at work and home. The speakerd are the best ever. The headphones are the best ive ever recieved with a phone. So good i dont use my jaybird freedoms anymore. Ive had 2 lines eligible for ugrade for a while now. Passed on note 3, passed on moto x, hate iphones, passed on nexus and will pass on LG2 when sprint gets it. My fiance has the S4 and loves it. Dont want anything else. I love my htc one. Dont want anything else. Dosent mean any are bad phones (all though i dont think ive seen a phone launched with as many issues the nexus 5) just everyone has certain things they like and dont. I.dont think the nexus is a bad purchase if you get it for $400 or less but i do think it would be stupid to waste an upgrade on one

battery life in terms of music playback? .. It's a phone not an ipod.

What about the inbuilt dac and sound quality + loudness?
Which one 'sounds' better?
Ive read the Nexus 5 is quite soft in comparison

It should be common sense that the n5 should get better battery life than the One. Given the same battery capacity but the n5 has a more efficient CPU for power sipping and kit Kat is also optimized for battery and to use less resources. The n5 should win every time.

Kit Kat has a new thing where 60 hours of play back is possible. It might be a software thing.

The cpu temp is what's important -- the metal casing of the HTC One is a better conductor of heat, which means that it will actually help cool the cpu more than a plastic casing would.

No it isn't - it's a multi function device with cellular capabilities!
As such, devices like the N5 have replaced a whole raft of devices for me, including music, video, exercise tracking, GPS, email, web, eReader, games etc.
Yes, I use it as a phone, but I use the other functions far more frequently. That being said, I won't compare battery life with a Nokia dumb phone from 10 Years ago because I do so much more than call and text with it.

Hi, I am looking to switch my phone from LG G2 to something different.
I am looking at Z3 Compact along with some other alternatives and would like to know common issues (both software and hardware level) in this Z3-C before making decision.
Also adding my primary usage:
- Net surfing
- Watching Videos
- Good battery life (LG G2 was awesome in this criteria)
Please share your experience with Z3-C and should I get it or instead save some money and get the Z1-C?
Thank for your valuable response.
Well if you're gonna ask in the Z3C forum you're gonna get alot of bias
But my first impressions are really good so far. Surfing is a very smooth and amazing experience overall. I personally dislike Chrome so I'm using UC browser HD. But, and that's the thing: No matter what app you use everything is silky smooth! With my SGS3 I was very limited with browsers because ~70% where just a laggy mess. Z3C handles everything with ease. So browsing will only be limited by the app you chose, the processing power, the display - the hardware side is very capable.
That also goes for watching videos, the display is very good in my opinion. I had to get used to it after using an Amoled for 2 1/2 years but you can even tune the white balance yourself in the display settings so you decide how you like your whites. Of course I wouldn't wanna watch a full movie on it or something - the screensize is a little on the small size for that. But obviously that's why we are buying the Z3C Power in a smaller size.
Battery life: Amazing. I used the extended battery with the SGS3 which made the device heavy and very thick (~1cm) and it got me through 2 days with about 4-5h screen use. I'm running my Z3C on its second cycle now and I'm on the evening of the second day with 19% left and an amazing 6h 40min screen time. And that's while heavily using it - setting up apps, testing games and emulators with BT controllers, making quite some photos/videos, some phone calls etc. I'd say you should easily get through 2 full days.
I don't know alot about the Z1C but I'd get the Z3C for the double tap to wake alone

I preordered my Z3C last week especially because all reviews highlighted the best in class battery life, camera and usability (size).
Reading the first reviews of peeps here on xda I read about the display that is easy to scratch, the edges that come off when you drop the device, the volume of the speakers that is too low, etc.. I don't know if people here are a bunch of whiners or if the phone really is that sensitive.. Probably people exaggerate but I'll find out soon myself since I should get it this week (I have no regrets whatsoever, I still want the phone)

Thanks for your valuable input.
The thing is I wont get warranty in my country. GEnerally I have seen Sony to be unreliable in term of hardware (always shows up issues in mid-long term period) and also they are very slow with os updates and does not even give updates after some time, where as htc nd sammy gives fast updates nd supports for 2 yrs.
I did like the phone's specs nd all. The size is perfect for me as well.

They've gotten faster with the updates. And I'm guessing it will further improve in the future since they are not going to release so many low-/mid-end phones anymore, if any.

Despite a handful of reports of cracked glass and chipped bezels, this phone is still the #1 candidate on my list. When I buy one, I'll probably get one of those crystal-clear hard-cases for it. Doesn't hide the sexiness of the phone.
