When I was buying my i9001, it clearly said it has 512mb RAM but in setting > about phone it said total RAM 352/358 mb (varies on rom). This is not problem in performance, but I dont like the fact that it says I got 358mb and 20mb-120mb free even when only basic processes are running.
I just wanna know what are the rest 150mb used for and why I cannot see them. I think it might be used for strictly for OS, but again when I consider my friend's phone LG optimus with 158mb RAM, in his settings it still says he got 158mb ram total and about 130 mb ram free. I dont understand why my i9001 uses at least 220mb ram (or about 400mb ram if we consider the phone has 512 like it says in specs) when only basic processes are running and optimus uses 40mb ram (According to the previous sentence).
Android is an Linux based system. Android is think *unused ram is lost ram*, so it will fill your ram with the time and use it all. If the ram is full, and you need more, it will free some for you, so just let android be android and don't worry about this there are 2 options why your friend has *more* free / lost ram. One option is he has 768/1024mb, or he as more aggressive settings

My friend just got his phone from unlocked mobiles, i am still waiting for mine from Handtec... argh... but i just got him to check how much free memory he had from looking at advanced task killer and he only had 37MB free!!? Got him to kill everything and he only got about 130MB free in total.
Can other people check theirs to see, because its looking like the same problem that happened with the nexus one where only 256MB of the 512MB RAM was available to use, until they upgrade it to Froyo 2.2 or change the kernal to allow for Hi Mem support.
rubbish if they havent sorted this!
anyone?
ya.. its the same because of the limitation in 2.6.29 kernel not the phone. More reason to bug Samsung to upgrade to froyo or root the device
Yeah i don't think they've fixed it, ,my phone only reports about over 100 meg free.
where do you go to see memory available?
122m Avail. memory using adv task killer.
bugger, i thought they would have at least sorted out the kernal to support himem. if XDA developers can do it for android 2.1 then why cant samsung! very lame and annoying as I have seen my friends phone slow down quite a few times now.
I flashed froyo JPD + voodoo lagfix and my RAM manger shows
191 / 304 MB.
I choosed level 1 and 2 and clean memory, now it is using 144 MB.
I guess it is supposed to show 512 MB.
If I kill everything, 142M free (stock JVK). I used to be able to get ~170M free with JPY...
I'm of the, sometimes controversial, opinion that unused RAM is wasted RAM though and don't really care how much is free - as long there's no lag!

I have same opinion. We will never see 512mb ram available, as someones may think..we HAVE 512mb ram, but due technical issues, it won't be all usable for us..and as a linux based system, it's good to have mem full as possible. Generally speaking...
There is many topics about ram in xda..with lots of information..

As far as i can remember, we don't see the whole 512 mb RAM (or at least 400+) because of PowerVR GPU, which reserves a lot of ram for itself.
on the specs, it says GS1 has 512mb of RAM. I know android OS takes space phone it self blah blah so we only get to use 3xx mb of RAM. but then usually half (if not more) of the 3xx mb of RAM is already filled!
before, (back in eclair & froyo days) android 2.3 will allow us to utilize ALL 512mb but ****, now even more RAM is in use..
also
someone told me Nexus S who has exact same specs as GS, can use ALL 512mb...
so is there a way to use all 512mb of RAM? or at least more than 329mb?

You do use all the RAM, Android users shouldn't be worried about RAM as it is good to be used... Now Samsung's excuse for updating the GS1 to ICS is bull. but the reason you get 329 MB of RAM is because that 183 MB of RAM is for the system and cannot be given to the user. There are some kernels that offer like 344 MB of RAM(for Froyo), but that is it. No more, no less. Can't change it! Sorry bud.
Edit- we always are utilizing all 512 MB of RAM always. And when half of it is filled, that is always going to be there if the phone is turned on as some none system apps and system apps cannot be closed and are needed for the device to function.
I just recently got myself a Samsung Infuse, really like the phone. One thing that really bugs me is that it appears to be the same as my captivate in terms of RAM and ROM space, yet on my Infuse i get access to 452MB RAM yet on my captivate as stated we only get access to 329MB or 344MB.
Why such the huge difference?
Hi all,
Question about i957 ram:
It shows on my device that I only have 755MB of ram. My used ram always is shown to be over 400MB, giving me less than 350MB to free ram use, and in a lot of cases less than 150MB of free ram.
1) I thought the tablet comes with 1GB ram. Where is the remaining 245MB?
2) Is it normal to have over 400MB of ram being occupied by something at all times?
Thanks

Some RAM is needed for Android OS and the device's components for them to work. Some ROMs manage RAM better than others but since we have lots, it is not something we have to worry about for now. ICS manages it better so look forward to it.

Hi there.
1. Some space used by the system such as android OS etc as said above.
2. I too got frightened when I see that as my S2 isn't that high usage. However yes it is normal. For my tab, with all the apps closed, i am running about 570+

Well as we all know our phones have 512 RAM but only 357 is usable.Why...I realy want the rest of the ram...mostly for multi tasking. So the question is HOW can we increse ur usable RAM to 512...and what system uses the rest...ram...allready when I start my phone the "system" takes more then 154 mb...with 0 apps running.
Choose a kernel with bigmem. They are all pushing 400 MB of available ram on the i9000.
SlimICS is just under 80 MB including Google apps.
To get the most out of multi-tasking you'll want to set the amount of ram the minfree taskkiller will keep, really low, like 25MB.
The 512mb of RAM is devided into two, for systems apps and for the user (you) you get 357mb while the other 100 odd is being used for system processes

Thx all and I understand that the systen uses 100 but what does use the 155 mb when I start my phone; we realy nees to make a kernel that supports at least 400+ mb it will help a lot for multi tasking

You can't. These phones have 512mb of RAM. ~100mb is used as Shared Graphics Memory like on Intel based laptops and such. The rest is then allocated to the system. This usually leaves around 350mb - 400mb of RAM available.
I'm not 100% on this because I'm new to Android (Had my SGS for 2 weeks). I think when Kernels have "bigmem" or differing amounts of RAM all they're doing is reducing the amount allocated to the GPU and therefore giving the system a bit more to run with.
well that is what i want more ram, "bigmem", if anyone can make it to an kernel for I9001 I/We will be very happy...
Try and apply called RAM BOOSTER PRO to free a lot of ram it's very useful

My only criticism with the N8 is RAM management. I moved from the Xperia XZ with 3GB of RAM and purposefully went for a device with 6GB because of reloads. Yet my N8 reloads the sites and apps in question every bit as much. I read that he N8 had much better RAM management with Nougat, is this so?*
My N950F 128 GB model almost never reloads, it only reloads when I execute device maintainance, which clears ram and all cached non essential stuff
I'm on Nougat and mine reloads after opening just two other apps briefly, or one app when using it extensively. Having 6 GB of RAM has had no improvement in this regard over the phones I've had with 2 gb of RAM.
I wish we could dedicate a certain amount of RAM to a few of our most used apps.
I never understood how the phone could use nearly 3.5 gigs of ram for background processes.
It would appear that there is no benefit when using a phone with 6GB versus a phone with 3 or 4GB. What a shame. A massive waste of multitasking possibilities.
You guys do realize free ram is wasted ram on android....
Since android 5.0 Ram management has gotten so much better..So what if you only have say 1 gb free Thats a good thing you are utilizing what you got...Nothing beats a good reboot once every couple days clear it out.Ram managers are a waste of battery...

That doesn't explain why my 6GB N8 reloads just as badly as my 3GB Xperia XZ. It holds hardly anything in memory before reloading/refreshing. I love the phone but specifically got it for the RAM which in my experience is kinda for show. It doesn't improve anything.
Well, I agree with you being so upset about YOUR particular note 8 behaving as a 3 gb ram device or worse, but my device reloads only sometimes, not all the time, I usually have some 800-1000 mb of free ram, in device maintainance I have some 60 apps unmonitored and 194 to always sleeping untill I run them
Use eternal process lock.. Its an xposed module.. It will lock the app and it will not be killed.

It doesn't reload all the time, it just reloads the same apps with the same frequency that my Xperia XZ did. It must be down to Android ram management rather than the amount of RAM itself.
