[Q] Battery life suddenly terrible! - Motorola Droid 3

Over the last couple of weeks the battery life on my D3 has fallen off the cliff. We're talking down to 50% or worse by lunch and giving me battery warnings by late afternoon. I don't believe I've installed any new software (other than updates to existing apps) and I have two batteries and both are just as bad. The only thing I've noticed on the usage stats is that Wifi is taking up the most power and I have noticed that my wifi signal levels around my house seem to be lower than normal. Could wifi be dying on my D3? Anyone have any suggestions?

Umm... my thoughts (Disclaimer: I am not an expert and I don't even play one on TV) -
You could try turning wifi off and seeing where that gets you. If that fixes it, then WiFi is definitely your problem. If not, either your battery indicator is borked (common issue) or your battery is going bad... read the OP, read the OP, read the OP

It might be an app that is running. I had Words with Friends installed and man it killed my battery in 3 hours! Try turning up your Android memory settings so it kills background apps faster also.

I seem to have narrowed it down to the TuneIn radio app. I have it running in the morning while fixing breakfast, etc. On the weekend I don't run it and my battery life has been much better. Didn't used to have a problem so perhaps the updated something?

Could be, I have tunein on mine, however don't use it daily. Do you use a launcher like go launcher or nemus, etc.? I use go and am just use to my phone dying by around dinner time, however it and other launchers can be resource hogs and I can see a recent update to it being a plausible cause for your sudden battery drain.
This is pure thought though, haha no facts or anything to support my claims, just ideas. Hope this helps a bit!

Try calibrating your battery, their are toons of free programs in Google Playstore (try battery calibrator). Also keep in mind every battery has a life cycle (maybe is already reach it's end). The other thing, is that you could have damage your battery by accident:
Things that could have damage it:
1-. Leaving you battery to charge at night (This can't happen, you should only charge it while it reaches 100%. Its like a cigarette, it slowly kills it)
2-. Has your device or battery been in contact with water? If it has, you should probably go to a Motorola Center.
3-. Overheating, try covering your cellphone from sunlight (The optimum temperature is from 0-45C°)
Hope it works, good luck

1 is actually incorrect. Leaving it charging overnight will not decrease battery life on modern batteries. When it reaches 100% it will stop charging and let it drop back down to 95%, then top back up. If it did this 20 times, it would be the same as 1 battery cycle(complete drain and recharge) you shouldn't see much more than 5% battery drop overnight unless you're running one of the experimental kexec roms, which have deep sleep issues. However if you are concerned about your battery lifespan then you shouldn't be on a kexec rom. Batteries have a limited number of cycles, but it doesn't matter if you do the cycle 5% at a time or 100% at a time.
To give you an idea, i've this phone and battery a year-ish and I still get as good of battery life as when I got it. I always leave it charging overnight. I easily get 12 hours of battery, and I'm a heavy user. At least 2 hours screen time plus several hours of music playing

I've noticed my WiFi killing my battery sometimes, and other times barely making the top 5 in the Battery Usage menu. It's weird. However, when I do notice it, turning off WiFi solves the problem. Typically this happens on my university campus; my working theory is that, for some reason, my phone is trying to talk to a WAP that's almost out of range, instead of switching to a WAP that's much closer. All of the WAPs broadcast the same network, but I think my phone may remember which specific WAP it connected to last time and tries to re-connect to that WAP even though it's halfway across campus

If your wifi is on, but not connected, it scans every 45 seconds which is a huge battery drain

Typically it remains connected but at low signal strength, despite a WAP being no more than 20 feet away (through 1 wall). I have noticed that though too; if I'm somewhere with a bunch of networks and not connected to any of them I'll typically turn WiFi off.

Battery Drain. Help!

I have experienced it a couple of times in the 8 months or so I have had my Captivate (Galaxy S). One time it was due to a rogue application that was using heaps of CPU. Using OS monitor I discovered that an app/process had a load running consistently up at 50% or more.
Uninstalled the app, problem solved. For months I was getting 48-60 hours out of a single charge, which was absolutely brilliant.
Now I have a new battery drain, and it's proving very difficult to find. Checking OS monitor didn't help. No app sticking out like dogs balls hogging CPU this time.
I tried the advice in this thread;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937080(preview)
Gone through it from end to end, and the battery drain is still there. The thread tells me I should be using roughly 1% per hour while on standby. Current widget tells me I am using 1% about every 5-8 minutes, which gives me 8-12 hours of battery life.
I have gone back and uninstalled a heaps of apps I no longer use, as well as uninstalling apps that I installed around the start of the time I noticed battery drain began. No good.
Checked all my settings, even experimented with turning off background sync (which I dont think is the problem, as I had it on when I was getting 2+ days of battery life), no good.
Using Titanium Backup, I went through and began "freezing" a couple of apps at a time, thinking I could find the application causing it that way. I sorted my apps by install date and started going back in time 2 or 3 apps at a time. No good.
However, I think I may have found a clue...
The other day, I turned my phone onto Flight mode, I can't remember why now. Anyway, I realised a few hours later that I forgot to turn Flight mode off. Looked at my battery and noticed, it had hardly dropped at all! Weird. As far as I can tell, I have the phone set up the way I did when I had great battery life. In some cases, I have even tried doing things I did not do when battery life was good (turning off background data, wifi etc). I still can't pinpoint the problem.
Who else has experienced battery drain on Android? What did you do to combat it? It's just frustrating knowing what my phone and battery are capable of and not being able to achieve it!
I have has that a couple of times too. The only way I have found to make it stop when it starts is to do a reboot. Like you it doesn't appear to be any specific app, the os is just eating battery. Once I reboot its great again. Hope this helps

Well from a lot of different articles I have read, having a weak signal around you can cause a drain on the battery. The fact that the phone has to try to grab the signal harder than it should on top of getting then losing and having to re acquire the signal drains the battery.
I haven't done any tests myself but I find that I get great battery life when using the phone heavily while at home on the wifi network.

Nah it's not that easy unfortunately. It's a problem I have had for a couple of months now. There has been many reboots in that time, none have solved the drain.
The only thing that did was putting the phone into airplane mode, which then make it a nice-looking paperweight.

It may be that, but I don't think so. As I said, I had great battery life using this ROM, and in the same locations as I do now with terrible battery life. I haven't moved, I still use the phone where I did before.
Cheers for the responses anyway guys. I appreciate it.
Google maps is a known battery drain even if not using it thanks to latitude trying to determine where you are. I would try freezing or uninstalling Google maps.

Thank you so much! It appears you are right. I "froze" Maps using Titanium Backup, and for 40 minutes my battery has been steady at 24% while on standby. Brilliant! Usually in that time I would drop 3-5%.
Now, the next question. How do I stop it? Does this mean I can no longer use Maps? I don't even use Latitude, but I see no option to uninstall it anywhere. Everything in it is turned off.
Not sure how to proceed from here. I do use Maps from time to time and would like to keep them if I can.
Just un-freeze it when you need it.
One thing that I did was start resetting my phone right before bed to terminate all the programs that I used through out the day.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
I have just upgraded to Serendipity 7, we'll see if that fixes the problem. If not, I may have to freeze Maps while not in use.
Well, after a battery calibration I am now getting 24-30 hours with moderate use. A long way from the 48-60 hours I used to get, but a lot better than the 10-12 hours of recent times. So I am half as well off as I was 3 months ago, but twice better off than I was a week ago.
Happy enough for now. Just wish I could pinpoint how I was getting that great battery life before!

Getting the most out of your battery

Ok going to try and start a conversation here to get feedback from everyone on what you guys do to get the most out of your battery. I see alot of people always asking what kernal is best for battery life and some people seem to have horrible battery life and some have exceptional battery life. I personally get decent battery life. Nothing super amazing but that comes down to the way I use my phone.
My current battery I'm using - Andida 2000mah battery
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/280843217453...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_4497wt_1396
I also have - GTMax 3500mah battery
http://www.amazon.ca/GTMax-Extended-Battery-3500mAh-Microfiber/dp/B006VAP102/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_t_4
The Andida gives me generally a extra 2-3 hours more over the stock. I had to cycle the battery 4 times before I started seeing any real improvements. If I take these off the charger at 6:30am I can ussually make it to around 10pm without needing to charge.
The GTMax get me through a day (630am - midnight) with around 50% left.
Now keep in mind this is based on my usage habits, and when I'm at work my signal is horrible so it drains a bit harder for the 8 hours I'm at work.
I don't have LTE where I live or work, I do get LTE in areas close by but on a regular day I don't see it. With the bad signal at work I've started to switch to gsm only mode (phone was constantly switching from Edge to 3g/4g and wouldn't provide a stable connection most of the time). This seems to have helped my battery at work.
When I flash a new rom I always give it at least 2 good full battery cycles before judging the battery life on it.
Ok onto some apps. My first foray into getting better battery life started with wanting to control my data. I used Juice Defender to that but I found that having to wait for the data to turn back on was at some times taking way to long and even sometimes I would have to reboot to get it back. Tried a few others and had similar experiences. When it works its nice and I did see some gain from it but at the same time it seemed bloated and slow and I decided I like having my data on and readily available quickly. After some searching I found an awesome app...

I highly recommend reading up on this app and trying it out. If your seeing a big drain on you battery while the screen is off, it's probably because there is something that is keeping it from going into a deep sleep mode. This won't save you any battery just by installing it but with a little work it can make a pretty good difference.
Ok now this is where I'm looking for suggestions, are there apps that you find specifically run smoother or are lighter than their stock counterparts or rival apps that put less of a strain on the battery?
Instead of the stock messaging app I run Pansi SMS. It gives me a few extra options but I never really used the stock mms on ICS so I can only compare it to Handcent SMS and I think it is definitely lighter and a lil bit more battery friendly. It's not a huge difference but I try and squeeze everything I can w/o giving up functionality.
For a launcher I'm running apex right now, but for a lightweight launcher I'd recommend FTL. Runs really nice and smooth, nothing fancy about it, just fast and light.
Some apps sometimes can just be poorly coded and thus have a bad effect on battery life. Alot of people seem to feel the Facebook app is one such app that suffers from that. The app that gets the most recommendations as a replacement and being a bit easier on the battery is Friendcaster. I tend to agree with that, and would recommend trying it out.
I'd really like to hear about what everyone else does to try and squeeze out the most of their battery. Theres more stuff that I do, such as reducing the amount of things that are synced to only the stuff I actually want, default settings just sync everything and I don't feel I need to sync my contacts on a daily basis as I rarely change them around. So share your tips, experiences good and bad with apps in regards to your battery, and if theres enough feedback I'll try and re-organize this into a bit better structure.

Right here, this is the key. I have data off all the time. I only turn it on when I need to look something up or browse. IMO auto updates really kill the battery and aren't worth leaving your data on all the time. I'm on wifi a lot as well. Currently I'm on DarkRaider and I'm ending the day with around 30-40%, great improvement over stock.
It seems that with every new handset that comes out this is one of the hottest topics but the parameters all always the same with regard to battery life.
The 3 biggest things that drain our batteries are Display Usage, Data Connection & Radio Cell Connection. These are listed in order of current used. Of the 3 we can have some control over the 1st 2. Lower screen brightness and disconnect data when not needed and use wifi when possible. While wifi does use a good amount of current it's not as much as mobile data. The last one, Radio Cell Connection, we have very little control over. It's also the reason we see people having great differences in battery life. The further the phone is from the tower it's connected to the more juice it needs to make a good connection. So other than leaving the phone in airplane mode or planning your life around where towers are, neither of which are very practical, there is not much we can do there.
To get the best all around life from Li-ion batteries do not fully discharge them very often and also don't keep them plugged in after they're fully charged. It's best to recharge them when they get down to 20-30% and unplug them after they're charged. They also don't need to be fully charged every time, they have no memory. If your on the go and can only leave it plugged in for a short period of time that's fine. Also if you have more than one battery and your not going to use the 2nd one for a while don't store it at full charge. drop it down to 50-60% before pulling it out.
I'll update this post when I get home tonight with more info and links. Hope it helps.

I always make sure my auto updates are off. WiFi isn't an option for me when I'm working. How do you manage your data connection? Do you manually turn it on and off or use an app? I never really tried manually turning the mobile data on/off, just found with apps like JD that it sometimes took way too long to establish a connection. I always shut off my wifi when I leave for work. I know with ICS the widget toggles for gps don't work, they take you to the settings to turn it off, is there one for mobile data?

With my 3500mah battery I don't really worry about turning anything off. That thing is great. Made a bumper case for it but I miss having a real case on it so I picked up the 2000mah andida battery so I could get a few more hours on some days. If someone ever made a real case for those big batteries i'd use it all the time.

Try 2x Battery from the store. It will shut off data as soon as the the phone sleeps, it reconnects at screen on after unlock almost instantly. It also allows you to white list apps, like Pandora. The free version only allows 1 app though.

The DarkRaider ROM I am using has a nice extended settings menu in the notification bar with a data toggle. I also have a nice widget from switchpro widgets where I can customize what kinds of things I want to be able to toggle from my homescreen. Currently I have data/wifi/vibrate-silent/gps. Doesn't take long at all when I toggle the data on/off, it's pretty much instant.

I use the 2X Battery app. When the phone goes to sleep, the app turns off the data radio. I can still get calls and text messages. I don't have a need for push notification of e-mail, etc., so this saves me some battery usage. Of course, if e-mail and other app notifications are important, this app will help only if you are willing to wait until you wake up the phone.
Here's what I do. I'm on the stock HTC battery.
I SetCPU screen off to 192/192 ondemand, in call to 810/192 ondemand, and regular use to 810/192 ondemand.
I listen to about 2 hours of music a day, have 3 GMail accounts on autosync, a Facebook account on hourly autosync and HTC Weather on hourly sync. Automatic brightness. Roughly 1.5 hours of cumulative web-browsing, no apps/games used.
I never use WiFi and I don't live in an LTE area.
I typically end the day (19-21 hours unplugged) with ~40% remaining.
Now I am not sure if living in area with LTE is a bless or curse....
I would unplug around 7am everyday, and by the time I get home (around 6pm) I would always in red mode (meaning, it is either 14% or under). Using the Holics-0.6 with the kernel that came with it, battery seems to die fast. Even when I am on the stock ICS before this, seems LTE would just bleed this baby to death....
Reading other comments, might as well start looking for a bigger battery....
It actually seems like I'm getting better battery since LTE came to my town. I'm on dark raider using kozmick's rc1 kernel and it's even better now. Try turning off vibration feedback...I think it's located in the sounds menu in settings. You can also try using automatic brightness or even just setting it to stay at 50% or lower. The screen is a battery hog. There's a stickied thread somewhere on here that has other things you can try too.

Really is a shame that we have to disable or ease everything back so much to get through the day on a battery. Anyhow, I have a Velocity (which comes out of the box with the processor running at 1500) on Dark Raider. Therefore I use SetCPU to throttle the beast back, depending upon the circumstances. It only is allowed to run at 1500 when on charge and down to 400 when battery below 25 percent. I also use 2X Battery to take care of the netowrk and Wi-Fi and have purchased the andida battery for extended life. I also have JD installed, however it is rarely used - reason is that I am in agreeance with "citsong" that it takes too long to establish connections, even causing me general connection issues from time to time. So for around $25 AUD you can get through the day on a battery with moderate use and reasonable performance. I have not tried the extended battery pack, though I will probably get one of those as well...not sure which are the best???
I personally don't like the vibrate response thing, so I turn that off right out of the box, also, auto brightness is another that I set. When I go in the battery tab to see what is bleeding it to death, and most of it would be the display....
Though, vivid seem to have a smaller battery compared to other phones of similar functions and/or size, so that might be the reason I am not really seeing a very good battery life?

My solution was to get a larger battery (2100mAh, the largest one with stock format) and using juice defender to control my Data Connection. I am getting about 60% more using time on a normal usage whan before!
I actually have both Motorola Atrix 2 and HTC Vivid. However, my Atrix 2 would last about two days between charges, which is kind of weird. I have my personal account and company account on that phone (personal is to activate the google stuff), so it eats up data twice as fast, yet it is almost twice as long battery life.
And to update a little bit from my post before, it seems I am getting better battery life now, after 4-5 days of flashing the new ROM, let's hope it is true....or I am just going to go hunt for a bigger battery

Actually, the Samsung Galaxy Note is way bigger than either Atrix or Vivid, so with a bigger body, I would assume that a bigger battery is possible. But if you look at current phones, I rarely see batteries that are above, say, 1800mAh, let alone 2000mAh and above, stock of course.

How's everyone's battery life?

So how's everyone's battery life on the HD? I've gotten about 11 hours average with decent usage, but I instilled Juice Defender and I'm getting about 20 hours now or so. Noticed better battery life on the One X but that's probably just because the One line from HTC has incredible standby time.

Charging takes FOREVER.
10-15 hours for me without Juice Defender. I played Gun Bros Multiplayer for 1.5hours and the battery was almost dead. My Atrix 2 could play for 2.5 hours. So the Atrix HD dosent have the greatest battery life. I see it lasting with mid-heavy use just for the work day at a 9-5 job then having to recharge it. My Atrix 2 with juice defender lasted well into the next day.
I cant say I'm too happy about that, but at least overall the phone is an improvement over the Atrix 2 except for battery life.
I can usually go thru a whole day on a full charge. It won't do 2 days.
Poor battery and camera are the only things keeping from trading my GS 3 for this phone.
I'm getting between 10-12 hours with screen brightness on medium, normal usage, and good signal. It's definitely better than what I'm seeing on my VZW Gnex on JB.
I am getting decent battery life I'm at about 50 with 6 hours of pretty heavy use. Getting LTE too in some spots. So I know that is heavier on battery buy otherwise I am happy. I am sure it will calibrate too after time

Everyone who has the Atrix HD should have an app called "SmartActions"
It contains a battery extender. I've been using it next to juice defender and it's working really well.
I've been playing games, running lookout mobile on my phone, and watching movies on my SD card.
I used it heavy all night and drained it to 40%
Let it sit off the charger and woke up to 35%
Used it Heavy (Games&and 45min Video) from 9am till 11:54am Drained it to 28%
The battery extender app under Smart Actions and Juice Defender vastly improved my battery performance. I feel it's on par with the Iphone battery life, if not better.
i think battery life is super. i went from arix 4g to this. sucks i cant pull battery though, i had 3 extra batteries for my atrix 4g
Eventually one of those case companies like PowerSkin will make a case that doubles as an extended battery.
From my understanding the case plugs into the USB port so you dont have to swap the battery.
I'm keeping my eye out for one, but its too soon to expect them being sold right now.
Some of you are too critical. Battery life is amazing. How long you want it to last? As near to forever as possible?? Its an Android with a long life!!!

Fully charged as of 8am,and I'm at70% right now at 9pm... Haven't had a chance to use the hell out of it yet, but that's still pretty good...
I took the red pill... It's the mAtrix for me...

Quick question for Atrix HD users can you turn off LTE mode via *#*#4636#*#* like could with Atrix 4G?
I waited a couple days before judging so it could recharge a few times and I wouldn't playing with it all the time!
It seems to run down very quickly when the screen is on - even though I have brightness turned down most of the time. It needs a charge about the time I get home from work, whereas my Captivate still had a good charge and could make it through the night and to work the next morning with room to spare. I'm doing the same basic things I did on my Cappy - just checking email occasionally, gReader a couple times, FB a few times.
I'm hoping it improves a bit over time. I have already activated the battery saver SmartAction and just installed JuiceDefender today.
I tried the LTE mode code above and it didn't work. I tried an app that should change the setting and it didn't work either. I tried creating a new APN and it won't stay on it, just switches back to the default AT&T APN. Guess we'll have to wait for root.
I just got this a couple hours ago. Will have some battery info on it tomorrow if it stays in my possession.

You must have got lucky with your Captivate, because mine would burn through 30% batter in idle after 4 hours,
Smart Actions and Juice Defender seem to do the trick.
I found that Widgets and some games (especially gameloft games) will keep the phone from going into deep sleep. I know that the game "Gun Bros" sends notifications to your phone and randomly will do background syncing.
Also making sure that you completely exit apps helps tremendously with battery.
Here is a good artical about saving battery life. It's worth the read even if it might be a little old:
Top 10 Battery Saving Tips For Android
I dont know how you guys are getting battery life that good. I made the mistake of charging myphone only halfway on the first day after it died. But I've been trying to cycle it properly since.
But I cycled my phone twice today. Battery life is complete crap.
My day today:
I woke up at 5:45, played Cordy Sky for 30 minutes and checked all my stuff. On wifi the whole time. Battery was down to 82%.
Commuted to work, 1.5hrs. Listening to music from SD card for most of it. Had LTE on for most of the ride, 30min of the ride is underground, data off. 73% by the end of the ride.
My office has virtually NO service, LTE or otherwise, I couldnt even make a call. I also didnt get on wifi for about 2 hours. My phone was at 25% by 11am.
At which point i just ran it on full brightness, screen on, wifi off, syncing, etc until it died so I could cycle it.
I'm lucky to get 6 hours out of it.
I am using tons of the Smart Actions. Turning on wifi when I get home & get to work. All the "extender" settings are activated and ready.
--
Doesnt Juice Defender counteract the Smart Actions? Are you using the free versions, or ultimate?
--
Lastly, we, as smartphone users, shouldnt have to sacrifice functionality to save battery time. That's just a fact, and manufacturers are doing something wrong by not fixing that. The article you linked to asks too much of the user, basically turning the phone into a "dumb phone" until you activate everything again.
I even have smart actions doing some of those things, but still... wtf?

Smart Actions and Juice Defender work great together. Mind you that juice defender takes a day or two to learn your phones habbits.
Honestly I'd check your apps and see what services they are running and disable them. Not a lot of apps were made or updated for ICS yet, so you'll find a few here or there that will stop your phone from going into sleep.
If your battery life gets worse, I'd go get it checked out. My first Samsung Captivate battery held a weak charge, then all of a sudden the charge died. AT&T replaced it for me.
I felt the same way you did the first day I owned the phone. Once I got things setup right, it's been a dream. Honestly no, I havent lost any function out of my phone. I just learned some new habbits... like closing out of apps completely. Turning my screen of instead of letting it time out. ect..

Yep.. scanning for signal is probably the biggest battery killer you could have.
Honestly I'd just put my phone into sleep mode until I was in an area with service.
thanks guys, i'm getting slightly better battery life.
I'll post a screenshot of my battery levels graph when it gets lower later today. I installed Juice defender after getting to a full charge (chargin while off) at 1am. Went to sleep, and it didnt lose too much in the next several hours. which was nice.
right now, at work, w/ no service, but I'm on wifi and I'm not in airplane or sleep mode, it's lasting pretty evenly.
To me, it seems like the screen is the BIGGEST battery suck. I've noticed that every time my graph dips rapidly, it's when the screen is on. I dont think the brightness can be turned down enough. And I tend to check my phone a lot.
I imagine a bugfix in the future, which will adjust the way the screen uses power, but right now, combining screen & lte use basically murders the phone.
Someone else mentioned they played a game for 1.5 hours and the phone was almost dead. There's definitely something bad happening with screentime being proportionate to battery.
Note the correlation in the image
It starts at 1am, the drop in the middle is 5:30am, when my alarm went off for almost 45min and I didnt wake up.
The next major drop is my 1.5hr commute. But I was streaming video this time for 3/4th of it.
Then I got to work.
(((((I'm not really complaining anymore at this point, i know I've gotta tweak my usage, and let the tools figure out the battery, as well as let the battery itself figure out my usage better.... in due time it'lll get better. Now I'm pretty much just trying to share information w/ interested parties))))

Try putting the phone in airplane mode, then going into settings and turning wifi back on when you are in a place with no cell service. It'll turn off the cell radio but let the wifi one work.

Battery Drain On s3 i19305

Hi, need some help,
I got this phone a couple of days back, its an unlocked one. Battery on the phone seems to be draining faster than i expected it to. The first time i charged it, it took 3 hours in the afternoon. By night it was 20% this was after playing games and downloading through wifi, so it seemed ok. I then put it for charge overnight. The next day it still seemed to drained by 7pm only used whats app this day, so i had to put for charge again.
Once fully charged (2 hrs) I shut off wifi, bluetooth, nfc and others. Switched off smart stay options and the display is set to lowest brightness (not auto). The wallpapers is also black so it will not drain battery. Overnight without the phone being used (only thing i set was alarm) the charge went from 89% to 78%. During the day I also find the charge still dropping pretty rapidly. I have included the screen shot of the battery from the same day. Between the first pictures there is no difference in use and still drops by 3% in 20 mins or so.
Is this a problem with the battery or is that how it is?
(Stock, no changes to rom)
Not sure if this is your specific problem - but one thing I've found that kills this phone fast is bad 4G cell reception. By default the phone runs as LTE/GSM/WCDMA (Auto) in Settings->Mobile Networks . If you are in a location with patchy (or none at all) 4G Coverage, the phone wastes an inordinate amount of juice switching to high-power mode on the cell radio searching for the elusive 4G/LTE ... Just like a 3G phone will deplete its battery extremly fast in a location with no/poor 3G connectivity (inside the 'secure' datacentres I wander into occasionally that have cell blockers, I can deplete the battery in a phone in about 3 hours just due to it constantly switching to high-power 'cell search' mode as it has no details on any cells to 'hand off' to....)
The difference is palpable... inside my office, if I have the phone on the right side of my desk closest to some windows, it will receive 'patchy' 4G and I'll go through about 60% battery over about 8-10 hours with intermittent phone use (most of the battery goes to screen time as I'm a 'fiddler' whenever I leave my desk for a coffee/break/etc...) If I place it on the left side of my desk, where the reception is much worse, it'll fall back to 3G and I'll go through about 80% battery doing nothing different...
I'm now in the habit of switching the phone to WCDMA Only when I'm going to be working in the bowels of the building, as there aint no hope of 4G there...Doing this drastically improves battery life.. Likewise if I'm stuck at home over the weekend, I leave it on WCDMA, as where I live has very patchy 4G as well and I only get it if I walk outside and down the street...
Just a possible reason for the excessive drain... at least worth trying anyway... *shrug*

I have used an app called "Radio Switcher" to activate "gsm auto (prl)", when i open the app it seems to go into "Device info". It seems to work but "Network mode" does not seem to change.
I have uploaded the screenshots
Seems as though the system is using more battery than the screen itself.
The system seems to really take up way too much battery power. Mine is at 4%.
What are your sync settings? Especially for things like Weather, stocks, news etc. If you set them to sync every hour or so, your phone will keep running on the 3G network which will end up draining your battery.
Also, switch off motion. It's a cool feature, but it's not necessary. Same with auto-rotate.
Finally, use WiFi instead of 3G where possible. That saves battery too.
If you're rooted, download noFrills CPU control and reduce your max clock frequency on days where you won't get a charge. Phone runs well enough on 800mhz, but has a tendency to keep going at 1.4Ghz for no reason.
Otherwise, get a higher capacity battery

My sync is off, plus i have disabled sync for everything individuality and disabled all unwanted apps. Data service is also off, only use wi-fi. under motion only smart call is on and auto rotate us off.
I have uploaded a screen shot off after ti disable all these apps.(went to bed with 35% and was 28% in the mornin, turned wifi off before)
Will upgrading (official) phone to android 4.1.2 help (current ver is 4.1.1)? Current base band version is i9305BVALI5 i got an update on kies to i9305BVALI3. I don't think this is update to 4.1.2 is it?
I have updated to 4.1.2, and applied only gsm setting in mobile network. All apps are still disabled as before. The system still seems to be suing most amount of battery, more than the screen. I do not know what is using the system.
I have stared having the same problem a couple of days ago. Though I have sync enabled 0-24 for 3 gmail accounts, motions are on, screen auto rotate is also on. I am using nova launcher, almost all Samsung apps are frozen and most of time I am on wifi.
Now, this drain has nothing to do with the stuff I just mentioned (Enabled sync, motions...). I have all that things enabled all the time, and yes MPU and GPU are OC to 1600 and 640 MHz. But I was always getting >= 24h with ~3,5 h of screen on time. As I already mentioned, problem started a couple of days ago. Only thing which comes to my mind is that I have played with freezing / defrosting apps and I probably installed a couple of apps too. Like Beautiful Widgets and that's my main candidate to blame for this at the moment.
Though I am still not sure... Better than battery stats didn't show anything what could help. Network location locator or similar is at the top of the list of partial wake locks. But the time it hold the lock (About 25 min.) can't be the reason for such a high drain.
I have switched to HD Widgets, what I was using before (With this app one can disable auto location.) removed Beautiful Widgets, and turned off'Use wireless networks' and GPS in location services hoping it will help... So we'll see...
For me it still shows that adroid system and cell standby time is using a lot battery.
I don't get why android system and OS is using so much battery, everything is disabled. Network is on only GSM setting and i have network all the time, why is that also high? Does someone else also have the same problem?
If possible, install Better Battery Stats, maybe it will help you to identify the problem... In my case it is not of much use at the moment.

Strange idea: download an anti-virus and let it run.
Might as well give it a shot now, especially since AV is free.

At my wits end with my Note5's battery. Please help!

Hey everyone!
I got my Note5 near launch day. I love everything about it, except the battery life.
Basically, I am not satisfied. I barely make it through the day with moderate usage. The crux of my problem is idle/standby battery drain.
This has been a problem for me ever since I got my Note5 and even for some of my old phones (M8 on Lollipop).
The Issue: I'm fine with how the battery drains when I'm actively using it. I'm not going to go into much detail about that, but I'm satisfied with how fast I seem to be killing the battery while using it. The part I'm not satisfied with is how much the battery drains when I'm not using the phone. Obviously, this must be an issue with wakelocks. When you look at the screenshot below for Android OS, it is always wake for more than 2.5+ hours in a 15 hour usage period. Now, I'm not sure if that's normal anymore. I don't remember how it was on KK, nor do I know if that's what everyone else is getting.
The Issues Cont: So yeah I have massive idle drain. (I estimated that I get about 1.5-1.6% battery drain per hour. I charged my phone up to 100% and let it sit idle overnight for a span of about 8 hours or so. It went from 100 to 91 during that time). What this means for me is that, I can use my phone less and less because while it sits in my phone, it dies quickly! On GSam, it shows that my battery discharged 38% while the screen was off! Again, I don't know if this is 'normal'. What is everyone else getting?
What I tried: I tried factory resetting. Nope. I tried reflashing the firmware, factory resetting. Nope. I booted into safe mode and left it idle overnight. Still dropped to about 92% or so, IIRC. I actually had the GS6 Edge before the Note5, but I returned it because of the ****ty battery life. Then I inserted my S-pen backward and broke the sensor in the Note5, so I got a replacement. For each instance, I always got crappy battery life. So I am doubting that this is a hardware issue. I tried minimizing the apps installed so minimize wakelocks, but it didn't seem to help.
What I want: Honestly, I just want to be able to use my phone and have it not drain so much while it's in my pocket or on the desk. I want to be able to go into a lecture for a few hours and come out with maybe 1% drain, not 3% or 4%. And I want to do this without rooting. I don't want to trip Knox, and I'm tired of rooting and spending hours tinkering with my phone to get decent battery life.
Attachments: I uploaded screenshots of almost everything I thought would be pertinent. Please have a look and hopefully we can compare results and figure out whether this is normal for a Note5 or not!
All screen shots here: http://imgur.com/a/xDZcN
Thanks everyone!
I reckom its something you are downloading is doing it. Add one app at a time and see what it does.

Yes there is something keeping your device awake. Rogue app. First guess would be that Facebook messenger app. Look in settings for your running applications, try to limit those to ones you absolutely need using package disabler. If you don't know what's OK to disable, read through the debloating guidelines thread.

Never let Facebook or Games run in the background and MOST IMPORTANTLY disable location services completely. Keep it on a toggle and turn it off until you need it. Always keep it off or Google will ping your location once every minute. It literally halves battery life.

I don't have the Official Facebook app installed.. And I almost always keep location services off, but the battery still drains as it does..
Use the smart manager app to stop certain apps from running in background and restrict background data for apps that don't need it in the mobile data settings.

My battery is amazing and I can say this as I am a battery guru and have spent countless hours trying to squeeze all the juice out of my devices, which includes eliminating wake locks. If you had root you could figure it out, without root you'll have to start un installing apps 1 at a time until it get's better. Also check your exchange accounts.
I assure you something is wrong as my battery life is the best of any phone I've had.

This probably won't be helpful at all as it is a complete shot in the dark, but perhaps you have an app that is trying to get your location continually since you have it off? Maybe try leaving location on. I never turn it off and I've been getting very good battery life on my T-mobile Note 5.

I also tried leaving location on as well. I can't really see an improvement as well. I actually only recently kept location off.
