Unlocking the RAZR i to any network - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Looking to get hold of a RAZR i in the nest couple of days to replace my worn out rooted Desire S. I've found a couple that look interesting but both are locked to T-Mobile and I'm on a Vodafone SIM only contract. I've had enough of rooting and installing ROM's tbh as its more hassle than it's worth but I'd like to unlock/unbrand one of these RAZR i's for use on Vodafone. What is the easiest simplest way to do this? Or does Carphonewarhouse or any other phone shop do this? I'd prefer to not root the phone and stick to the standard OS unless its absolutely necessary. Can it still be done?

Just get a factory unlocked one from Amazon or Clove.

Thanks but they are way more expensive than the ones I've seen. Just like everyone else I'm looking to pay as little as possible, assuming it's possible to sensibly unlock one.

Ah, got ya. Not sure what you can do then, as I don't believe Voda carry the Razr i, and I haven't seen any threads where it's been successfully unlocked yet.

Hey, I got my phone as an upgrade through Phones 4u and it is unlocked.

Check with Unlockunit

My experience is with 2 Razr I blocked with Telcel in Mexico, I had to change the rom Stock as to insert the SIM of another Carrier I threw the menu to enter the unlock code, I searched the Internet and found "Unlockunit", unlock my first Razr I and subsequently lower your app from Google Play and unlock a Wildfire (Iusacell) and finally did the same with my other Razr I, the Wildfire was 30 minutes but the Razr I took up to 4 days

T-Mobile G1 Unlock

Heya all, well i just menage to finally buy a new g1 off ebay been trying for awhile now but finally got one for the right price but the thing is.. being new its locked to t-mobile now from what i have found there are only two way's of unlocking both are via unlock codes and from what I've read i can get it free from t-mobile but i also believe you have to of been a t-mobile customer for 2 months plus or something any you guys know if this is true?
The other option is to get one of these websites that give you unlock codes has anyone used these could you if possible tell me what sites are genuine and safe to use?
Another thing is there any other way's of unlocking the phone?? that i have missed? i haven't actually got it yet but its being posted as we speak..

T-mobile will give it free if your a longstanding customer. If you want to buy it, buy it from ebay. There is another thread in this section (actually more like 20, one of which has a link)
Yea they wont give you the code unless you have been a customer for 90 days or more. The site I used was http://www.unlock-tmobileg1.com it took about 10 hours for the code to arrive, they have detailed instructions on how to register an ATT APN so you can do the initial google setup too. I think they offer codes in 2 hours now, but either way its a good site and I think its just over 20 bucks, like 22 or 23. I looked on ebay but it didn't have a good feel to it, for me anyway.
edit: One great thing about using it on att is that they wont know its a smartphone because its not in there system so you can use the $15/month dumb phone unlimited data plan and it works great, I have been using it for about 3 months now, only downside is att and tmobile use different 3G bands so it is impossible to get 3G with att.
Only use unlock sites who people here say they have used. Don't be fooled by some of them which are *very* cheap (as in, a quater or the cost of most), these will normally tell you *how* to unlock your phone (call t-mobile or buy a code, but they dont give you the code).
I bought my code of eBay, that way you can look at there feed back and you know that the testimonies on their flashy website aren't fake.
Cool cheers guys thought that'd be the case phone still hasn't arrived yet so until then...

Some unlocks can be done for free using a custom ROM flash. The operating system is only setup to bar off any non-TMobile sims, so do a flash, and bang, that SIM restriction should be gone.
I have never heard of any rom unlocking the phone, the carrier lock is much deeper in the phone, hence why you dont lose your unlock status when you switch rom's. I did a ton of searching before I unlocked my G1 and never saw anything like what you speak of, I had already rooted and flashed 3 or 4 different roms when my phone was still locked and it never made a difference, so could you please provide a link to this type of rom? And just so you know, in your sig you list phone OS's but what you are talking about is rom's as the only OS for the G1 is Android.

I don't think that's right either. I've heard quite a few people say that after rooting and flashing a non-tmo ROM their SIM was still locked...

He might be confused with something else because of all the smartphones I have had I've never heard a rom to unlock your sim/carrier. I wish there was though but if you think about it you would never be able to change your rom because you would lose the unlock status.

Has anyone got a RUU or other method 2.3 on their Bell Incredible?

I've tried goldcard with 3 different SD cards, tried it multiple tiimes even with the instructions from the downgrade bootloader walkthrough thread. Keep getting error 130.
I'm not impressed with the Incredible S so far, not so great signal reception... I sold my Desire for this? should have waited, everything else about it had me sold, but going from vanilla GB (villanROM) on my desire leaves much to be wanted.
I bought it earlier today... i'm considering walking into Bell and returning it for an Atrix.
I've heard that the bell version is tough to crack, but if you want my advice I wouldn't go for an attic, everone I have spoken to has been dissapointed with it. What other choices do you have?

Well i'm not sure if they will give full refund next day :S but the guy I bought it from said they do 14 days in store credit for sure.
Bell doesn't really have anything else that interests me, Galaxy S vibrant (meh) and Desire Z 4G (no thanks)
Telus uses the same bands/towers in Canada (that's who my provider is I just unlocked the IS) and they have the Nexus S which I was going to go for at first but no shops have it in stock.
I really should have just sat on my Desire for a while longer. I also have a Motorola Milestone...
I have both the Atrix and the Incredible S. I had similar reception issues on Telus and Bell's HSPA network. So far no issues on Rogers (in Red Deer, AB). I love my Atrix. I got an incredible S for the camera. So for I'm impressed with the incredible S but I did just get it last night.

You should be able to get a refund if the you have the phone for less than 14 days AND the talk time on it is less than 30 minutes.
Cheers

Everyone I ask says the Atrix just isn't what they expected, it looks awesome on paper spec wise, but MotoBlur takes all the fun out of it.
My friend with a Nexus S says it seems very slow compared to his. The IncS has pretty much the same cpu and ram as the Nexus S so I think the advantages of dual core phones are yet to come and see no real world performance benefit as of yet.
I'm giving it some more time, and pretty much just playing with the IncS over wi-fi and testing it out and not using any talk time.
I've unlocked and rooted/updated my Moto Milestone in prep to sell it. I'll give myself a few more days to decide, but with no RUU/OTA working on it i'm left wondering what will be it's future.
Should have kept my Desire until there was more Dev support for either, but I did check through the forums here, I knew it wasn't rooted yet but thought I could get GB on it out of the box.
Spoke to a Bell employee, he told me that they are testing GB for IS atm but couldn't tell me the release date.
If it is just the Android version that's bothering you, I would wait it out.

Once you unlock the IS, you can't return it coz it voids the warranty.
But I'm using it on Fido, and I'm having no reception problems at all.
So when bell finally releases the GB update there will be an RUU for us to use for those of us who don't get an OTA right?

I don't really understand why some are saying that sim card unlocked phones won't get OTA. Sim unlocking is not same as rooting the phone, unless the OTA update also checks what carrier you are using lol..

Bell will give you the sim unlock code for 50$ no mention of any voiding of warranty... I bought my unlock from gsmunlock.net, it's the same thing as what the provider would have gave me.

Providers have access to the unlock codes, sorry it was actually Telus I contacted about a sim unlock before selling my Desire on the weekend, HTCs are easily unlockable... i'm sure Bell is the same.
I'm sure it was just an uninformed sales rep, or was just trying to prevent you from going to another provider or them losing the cash they would have made off it lol.
You can unlock here for $25
http://www.htcimeiunlock.com/
I'm positive that unlocking your SIM does not void your HTC warranty whatsoever since it does not alter the phone's software or hardware in any way other then "unlocking" it.
Perhaps it'll void your right to return/exchange the product, but in which case I doubt the store rep will even bother to check if the phone you are returning is unlocked or not...
I used cellunlock.net Google the site name + coupon and you can find a code for 50% off
I unlocked 2 android phones for under 20$ haha, had the code for the HTC in about an hour, the Motor took 24 hours.

Yep! That's what I used, with the 50% off coupon. It came to like $10.
Well, I'm glad to know unlocking it "shouldn't" void the warranty, then. I was pretty upset that a $500 phone wouldn't have any warranty on it.

I had contacted HTC a few weeks ago asking about this. Here's what they said:
With OTA software upgrades, it's a bit iffy. In some circumstances, update sofware is provided to local stores, who should be able to update the phone for you (policies on this differ from carrier to carrier, where some may be okay with updating an unlocked phone, and others won't).
Sometimes, a downloadable version can be found on our website for the phone in question:
http://www.htc.com/ca/support/incredibles-bell/downloads/
Each device has a specific address that it checks for its updates. Theoretically, the unlocking process shouldn't change that. Your device should still continue to recieve updates, however, it really depends on Bell's update policy when it comes to phones no longer on their network.

So my question stands... if Bell decides to be dicks about it (wouldn't put it past them ) and they don't push the OTA to our phones, will we be able to find an RUU somewhere that should work? (possibly on that link in the quote?)

[Q] Simple n00b Question About ROMs

I'm definitely a noob here, but I've been lurking for over a year, researching, and finally made an account.
I'm stuck with AT&T for awhile. Like most other sensible people on the planet, I want a Droid 3. I thought all hope was lost until I just recently heard that someone finally cracked (rooted) the thing and there are already several custom ROMs out, to my understanding..? Like the Steel Droid ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278056
Does the Steel ROM allow a Droid 3 to work on AT&T networks?
I also read that Negri Electronics is selling custom Droid 3's that work on AT&T's 3G networks, but it's $600.
Is there any hope of getting a D3 with AT&T, or do I have to stick with my beat-up (but still functional) old Tilt 2?
And Yes I searched, but the Droid 3 Root thing is so new there's not much info on it yet.
I have heard of people successfully using a D3 on AT&T, I think you need to unlock the SIM for US networks somehow. Loading a rom like Steel Droid won't make any changes that will allow you to use it on AT&T though.

Hrm... Crap. So currently the only way to get one for AT&T is via Negri Electronics? No one has heard of any other way? 0.o
I don't suppose there's any other phone that can compete with the D3 as far as specs and a full QWERTY keyboard, huh? Bummer, big time
I'm coming from a VZW TP2 and i know people used it on Tmobile and other GSM networks by unlocking the SIM. The way I did it was by calling Verizon and telling them I was going out of the country and they did it for free on the phone, I'm not sure how to do it if you're already on another network or don't activate it with Verizon first (For free). But that's definitely what you should look for, once the SIM is unlocked it should work anywhere as long as you enable roaming.

Simlock or not you can use the droid 3 anywhere in the world but not in the us.
No matter if you use the verizon sim or any other sim.
To do it you need the so called band unlocking which is currently unavailable for the droid 3 and when and if will be, will require a good amount of money.
In short if you need the phone buy a milestone 3/Xt860
...but keep in mind, that while root and recovery are a go for the XT860, there's no custom ROMs working as of yet.
It'll come though.

Did a little research, but just to be clear, the Milestone 3 (aka the XT860) is the Canadian version of the D3, released by Bell, correct?
And since it already works in North America, could I simply buy one and use it on AT&T as-is? Or would it also need some sort of unlocking?
Correct
Given the price should be an unlocked phone, ready to be used anywhere in the world US included.
Thanks, I almost bought an XT883 a few days ago, that would have been terrible. Stupid Verizon and their locked-down phones.

Alright. Thanks to you guys' help and support, I averted a financial disaster and a raft of headaches/psychological meltdowns. I just ordered:

I'm in Hawaii, waiting on a phone being shipped from Canada though, so it'll be a couple days
Thanks again for your patience guys, especially Solutor, your advice really made a difference. I clicked the Thanks button for you.

No its not possible at all. You will have to pay your phone bill.
Contrary in what you believe in, throughout all phone history, there has been only a few phones you can fool with the unlock codes, like the galaxy line, and really old nokias. Really !!!
Unlocks go around $13-17 on ebay, mine took 3 days so I was fairly dissapoint.

[Q] Help! Locked AT&T Moto X without anymore unlock attempts

Hoping for some help here. I'm a true NOVICE who bought a locked AT&T Moto X online. There were problems unlocking it and all attempts to unlock it using a code were used (not exactly my fault but it's a long story lol)
I've done some reading and I'm wondering if using JCase's ROCKMYMOTO method to root the phone using Cydia Impactor will also unlock it from the AT&T carrier?
(fyi I tried to install 'MotoRoot' and 'PwnMyMoto' but both were rejected — I'm assuming because the person I bought it from updated the Camera patch that nullifies the two earlier roots).
Any help would be great.

Bootloader unlock or sim unlock? Also, cydia? Isn't that an ios thing?
Pretty sure you are talking about the sim unlock which I know only gives a certain number to tries to get the proper code.
The only thing I can suggest is to plug the phone in so it has power and then let it sit at the code entry screen, with any luck after a number of hours it will again prompt for the code.

It doesn't bring up the SIM unlock screen anymore even when I insert new SIM cards. It reads my SIM as I can use theSIM toolkit and see my phone# but there is always the 'No Sim Error' icon at the top line of the phone.
okay well I guess there is no solution to it then... too bad I was hoping somebody would've had a suggestion or perhaps even an easy fix.
A heads up, if anyone here is with AT&T and wishes to stay with AT&T for the life of a Moto X I'll be putting a sharp Blue/White with Red accents MOTO X up on EBay pretty soon. It works great except it is apparently now impossible to unlock it to another carrier.
Cheers.

Did you try speaking with AT&T customer care? Surely there has to be a solution to this
Have you tried any of the codes from other Motorola phones that may bring up the unlock screen? I thought most of them still allowed you to unlock but forced you to wait a long time if too many incorrect codes were entered.
One of the codes I found was #073887*
Or leaving the phone phone powered up and turning airplane mode on and off after waiting a long time to see if the unlock screen will come back.
Even if you do root the phone it won't unlock it, the only way is the proper 8 digit code. I have unlocked two of them without a problem but they were Rogers Canada phones which seem easy(and cheap) to get unlock codes for.

Thanks for some good suggestions I hadn't heard or thought of. So far no luck but I'm gonna keep trying.
I found a neat app on Google Play. It's for the Samsung Galaxy series call 'Galaxsim Unlock' and apparently once you download the app it'll do all the unlocking for you — ie. No entering the code yourself. That would seem to bypass my problem. I emailed the developer, 'Spocky', asking if there are plans to have an app like that for the Moto X and/or if he might know a solution to my problem. Fingers crossed!

Sim unlocking doesn't void the warranty. They should help if you still have service with them. If not, then don't bother. They don't care if you already switched to another carrier.

It's not that I switched service from them, it's that I bought the phone second-hand from someone who had AT&T service. It's IMEI is clean though. I reside in Canada so I couldn't get AT&T service as they don't offer service here. I don't think they'll help although I'll probably try to contact them since I have nothing to lose.
I'm starting to suspect that if I was able to put an active AT&T nano SIM in it then I might be able to get the network unlock prompt back by using some of the #codes like ##debug# or #073887*. When I try those with my Bell Mobility SIM it says unable to access network. I think I'll try purchasing a $10 or $20 pay-as-you-go AT&T SIM online and see if it nets me any progress. I don't want to sink too much money into something that might not work but another $10 won't really hurt. Otherwise, I was considering a trip to NYC the weekend after Christmas so I might have another reason to go.

With any luck it will work, who knows what rules Motorola has in place with respect to unlocking the phone.
You probably already know this but if you buy another just grab a Rogers or Fido phone, there is no problem getting the unlock code. The Rogers/Fido version also supports 2600 Mhz LTE which you should have access to. The AT&T phone has the hardware to support 2600 Mhz but the 4.2.2 version has it disabled. The 4.4 leak enabled it but I don't know if the official release left it enabled or disabled it. The Rogers/Fido also allows bootloader unlocking which is great if you want to flash leaks, root etc.
I've been able to pickup both of my Moto X's for great deals on craigslist locally.

The only thing ROGERS doesn't have is Moto Maker ...and my 'business', I suppose. I dealt with Rogers for years and finally had enough of their lousy customer service. Honestly, Bell is now getting on my nerves too. I suspect I'll be a Telus client in the next couple years haha

I hear you there, I've never been a Rogers customer in my life. I was with Telus for 21 years, same account/number. Just recently switched to Koodo because of a very special plan and Telus was not interested in offering anything remotely close to reasonable. Of course Koodo is Telus so I didn't really move much, the joke is on them, I get more service for less money.

No I am still unable to get the 'Network Unlock Code' prompt when I insert the 'foreign' SIM into the Moto X. My last chance will be a trip to Buffalo next weekend where I can try inserting an active AT&T sim (who it's locked to) to confirm it'll still work on AT&T and whether that'll be enough to get the code prompt to come back when I put a Canadian SIM in afterward. Once I at least confirm that it still works on AT&T then I'll sell it to an AT&T customer if I can't get it to work in Canada.
I am having the same issue. Although I have an AT&T SIM and forgien SIMs all active and can't get the prompt to show up.
I purchased a unlock code, put in the foreign SIM, got the prompt. Then put in the code (1 time), it said "invalid code" and disappeared. I cannot get it to show up at all again. Would love it if the #07.... or any worked but so far none I have seen or tried do.

Hi there, I received a brand new Moto X from Motorola this week. I contacted their customer service and after they verified the SMEI number to confirm the phone was not labelled as lost, stolen or from a delinquent account, they gave me an email that contained a promo code for me to use Moto Maker and customize to the version of my choosing. They also provided me a Fed Ex label to mail in my old Moto X that was not functioning properly : )
I recommend contacting Motorola directly. Thanks.
