Nexus 4 confirmed working on prepaid AT&T tablet dataconnect plan - Nexus 4 General

So I have confirmed that AT&T's tablet dataconnect plans work on the nexus 4. This is awesome if you just want data without having to pay extra for phone service. Right now I'm using the 3GB $30 a month prepaid Dataconnect plan. All I did was enter the IMEI for a tablet, T-Mobile Springboard is what I used, and your Sim card #. From there you just simply change your APN and your good to go. I wasn't sure if this was possible or not, but now I have confirmed that it is!

Thanks for sharing. It's good to know.
If I'm not mistaken, AT&Ts non-LTE 4G is slower than T-Mobiles 4G. Can you also confirm this to be true?

Wait $30 a month? For 3gb? That's the same amount you pay with t mobile and you get unlimited text and 100 minutes of talk with 5gb of 4g! Doesn't seem like you're paying less and you get less from it

T-Mobile has the least market penetration of any major carrier. Most of us cannot use it.

AT&T has HSPA+21 with theoretic speeds up to 21 mbps
T-Mobile has DC-HSPA+42 with theoretic speeds up to 42 mbps
Generally TMOs 4G (HSPA+) is faster, but it all depends on coverage
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium

Actually AT&T only has HSPA 14.4

AT&T's "4G" is slower than T-Mobile's, but where I live the only data service T-Mobile provides is EDGE or just plain 2G, hence why I would rather have AT&T. Where I am in Maine right now I get about 80kbps download and about 60kbps upload on T-Mobile. Using the prepaid tablet plan on AT&T in the same location I got 2-3Mbps download and about 800kbps upload. Determining which carrier's data speeds are faster greatly varies depending on your location. I just thought I would try to help some people out that are in a place where T-Mobile has terrible/no service and they don't want to pay $60 a month for the prepaid smartphone plan from AT&T. This tablet plan is half the price. To make calls you can just use Groove IP along with Google Voice, and that is through your data. So you no longer need a phone plan, only data!!

Nice thing about the N4 is that it is a petaband phone and can easily be switched between att or t mobile at anytime on prepaid sims.
So the "insert (preferred) carrier/plan here" argument is moot.
But the OP is appreciated knowledge.
Just test and go with what works for your needs.

What's the APN that you would use? I'm doing the same thing and can't get the APN correct. Thanks.

To me the extra $15 for straight talk is worth it but for someone who uses very few minutes and no MMS this could be a great option.

Hmm this might be a good option for me. Sadly, T-mobile data speeds have been very disappointing around my area. Plus, anywhere outside of town is edge which is worse yet.

Definitely trying to create a new data connect account and items totally not letting me. :'(

That's awesome. You could just get that and your google voice number. Be set for 30 bucks a month on AT&T. With great coverage.
I am just on a family plan.

[Q] Possible to use AT&T Tablet Data Only Sim on Captivate?

I plan on visiting an AT&T store this week to see if I can get one of the data-only tablet sims for use with my captivate. Am I barking up the wrong tree here? These would be the type of sims used in things like the Galaxy Tab, etc. I could get by using VOIP if I could save a couple bucks a month. $25 for 2gb should do me just fine. I'm just not sure if they'd let me do it.
success! the kind folks at AT&T had no qualms with giving me the 2GB data plan for my captivate. they had to get a legit tablet serial number from the back room to activate the Sim, but all went very smoothly. only problem I see now is that the mobile internet service is horrifically slow. is it possible that i'm not configured to male use of the full 3g capacity of this thing? speedtests are coming in at about 30kbps.
edit: nevermind. 3g kicked in after a few minutes.
here's my configuration for getting the $25 2gb tablet plan working on my unlocked captivate.

Is there a way we can do this without going to a at&t store? My town doesn't have one. Just buy a tablet sim online directly from AT&T?
I'm not sure, but I tend to doubt it. The guy at the AT&T store had to activate the Sim using a serial number he obtained from an unopened tablet box in the back room (very awesome of him to do so). Normally I think you can activate Sims directly from your device, but in this case it would read the model of your phone and fail to activate. I'm still half expecting to hear from AT&T in the near future telling me my device is ineligible for this type of service, but so far so good.

Using Note in Canada

Hi,
I am wondering if I can use Galaxy note through Telus in Canada.
What I am planning is as soon as I receive Galaxy Note, I will have three year contract and will sell Galaxy 2 which comes with three year contract. So I can save some money
Thank you in advance.
Rogers
Hi there,
I'm interested in information for Rogers!
Thanks!
My Note arrived today from Negri Electronics, Fedex from Hong Kong, taxes were around 35$, fired right up with my Rogers sim, apn was correct, 3G/HSDPA connection, primetime speedtest is around 4Mbps down 1 up here in Vancouver, on wireless the speeds are similar to a tablet 30-35Mbps down, 5 up on my home network.

I am soooo excited to get this phone. Waiting for delivery over this next weeks is gunna be tough!! #firstworldproblems
Does anyone using the Note on Bell Canada please?
Also I am wondering if you guys are worried about Canada getting another model of the Note in Q1, and thus having to do the ICS update on your own somehow. I for one have never updated a version of Android without Samsung Kies
The HSPA+ frequencies are the same between the big 3, so nobody should have any issues with data.
I've got my Note on Bell, and I haven't had an issue. I had to input the APN manually out of the box, but that's about it.

I'm not worried personally.
Because there's no carrier to interfere with updates, we should be able to get them sooner than those who will buy theirs from a carrier.
Been using my SGN on Rogers for about 3 weeks now and it is great. Getting the H+ connection all the time in Mississauga. Love this phone and will never go smaller.

im also with rogers and have not expirenced any problems with my sgn. I recieve solid 3g/hspda connection, im located in edmonton, alberta.
I'm in Ontario, 2hrs east of Toronto, using my Note on Rogers.
I had a Dell Streak, just put the SIM in my Note and it worked right out of the box.
I've had it since Nov-25.
Rocks!
EDIT: It's received 2 updates via "check for updates". So, I can't see any reason ICS won't come along when ready.
International versions of samsung phones have always received updates faster than carrier branded phones.

i bought mine off ebay from this reputable seller:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Samsung-Gala...ell_Phones&hash=item4cfbb71424#ht_4929wt_1163
shipped out via fedex (free shipping) the same day, and currently waiting for delivery. it was the lowest price i found. and according to fedex, the seller listed it as a gift under $60. so unless customs pulls it and inspects it, i won't be hit with the extra brokerage and taxes that handtec and other such shipments have been hit with.

Not the current one.
Canada's LTE network is running on the 1700Mhz frequency, US is 700Mhz, neither of which are currently supported by the Note.
You're guaranteed HSPA+ however.

That's correct. It'll work on any smartphone regardless, so you're good to go once you receive your Note mate.
I am using my note in Vancouver area, initially i used with rogers and now i am using with bell and seems like Bell has a better HSPA network then rogers. I was on Bell and switched to Rogers but didn't like voice chopiness and slow internet on rogers.
Bell connection constantly having HSPA+ connection compare to Rogers intermittent H+ connection.
Got new Nexus from Bell but compare to Note dont feel like using Galaxy Nexus.

Guys, Newegg.ca are selling the Note for $690.00 plus tax and free shipping. I think its a pretty good price. Alot cheaper than what the UK or Ebay are selling it for. Neweggs version is a Polish version as one of the buyer mentioned it in the review.
ive been using my note in vancouver on telus for about a month now and it works just fine! just took the sim out of my old iphone and it worked
Def works

i have one more Note that i will be getting, if anyone interested Do let me know, Send a offer. Will pass details to who are interested.
Thanks.

it doesnt have to be unlocked... i havent tried the vivid, but i did sell my inspire to a co-worker and he had no issues using it on straight talk.

Straight Talk is actually an MNVO (mobile network virtual operator) that runs on the AT&T towers, so any AT&T device is compatible on a basic level. You will need to change the apn for data access. I think it is att.mnvo or something similar. I have read that your data speeds will likely be throttled to a lower speed. If data speed is important, you may also want to check to see if you will have access to LTE and/or HSPA+ networks.

Thanks for the EXCELLENT reply. That was extremely helpful. I do have a couple followup questions.
Straight Talk is accepting T-Mo phones as well. Would those also run off the AT&T network still?
Also, she alleges that she doesn't have AT&T service where she lives. She is currently using a Wal-Mart purchased Straight Talk flip phone. Can someone explain that???

Yes, so they would have to be network unlocked. Also, since T-MO and AT&T have some differences in frequency bands and data transmission protocols for high speed, most T-MO phones won't be able to access high speed data.

I have read that AT&T and T-MO have roaming agreements for voice (not sure about data) and that these agreements only apply for monthly plans, not pay as you go. It could be that the monthly plan MNVO users also have the benefit of the roaming? If you are curious, ask her to check her network settings and it should indicate if she is connected to at&t/smart talk or if it is t-mo. Since it is covered under agreement, I don't know if it shows up as a roaming status on the main screen. Assuming she is correct about the AT&T thing to begin with...

Model
Do you have the model and brand of the phone she is using?
If it is AT&T Sim from Straight Talk will operate on ATT towers. If it is TMO sim will operate on T-Mobile towers.
If her area is not covered by T-MO or ATT, then she may be using a Straight Talk CDMA phone which could run on another provider like Verizon.
I have the Vivid with Sraight Talk and no problems. I do have an issue sending MMS messages, which is an issue with my phone (I switched the SIM to a Galaxy and to HTC Inspire and I was able to send MMS).
Does anybody know why? (I'm using the APN recommended by Straight Talk).
To clarify a few things: I too have Straight Talk on my brothers Vivid with. Att SIM. I do NOT suggest getting a Tmo SIM. Reception is awfull if you aren't in a large city. Also you can NOT roam the ATT towers with the Tmo SIM. Data Speeds are NOT throttled at all and I regularly hit 700-1000KB dl or 6-8megs however you calculate. Straight Talk will throttle you if you repeatedly use over 2GB of data a month buy for 45$ a month you can't lose. Hope this helps
Vivid and MMS?
Nate,
Are you able to send MMS messages with your Vivid?
I'm able to connect to Internet and make calls. I configured the APN correctly and I still can't send MMS. If I switch my SIM to any other phone, I'm able to send MMS. Any idea on this?
Thanks!!
PS. And yes, $45 per month is awesome!
Hi gifr, yes mms works perfectly. It may be an issue with your Rom, your Texting App, or an apn setting. That's the only thing I think it could be.
I have been thinking of doing this with NET10 which it is my understanding is the same thing as Straight Talk and works with both AT&T and T-Mobile towers.
Is the data really unlimited or are you slowed down after a certain amount?
Does Visual Voicemail work?
Can specified only for AT&T and T-Mobile apps be installed and used?
Visual voice mail doesn't work on my vivid but everything else does.

Smartphone plans that work with N7 3g

We have a thread going about what doesn't work with the N7 3g. How about keeping a list of what actually does work? I won't make a list of data only plans because that is a given. I am talking about smartphone plans with minutes and sms as well as data. I will edit the list and try to make myself useful. I am hoping that a few of the prepaid plans will work on the t-mobile/at&t networks despite the blocking when purchased from the carrier.

If this thread is meant to be USA specific, please indicate so in the title.
If not I will just hazard a guess: The N7 should work on *all* CDN smartphone plans because AFAIK none of the carriers here do punitive device screening. The only caveat is you would have to put in the smartphone APN if the tablet APN is the default. But if anyone has a counterexample please do make it known. (Of course the voice side won't work unless/until devs figure out how.)
UK - T-Mobile standard pay as you go Sim works. I'm using it now.
StraightTalk's T-mobile SIM works.
I'm using it now. Good Speeds too..
My cousin is using SIMPLE Mobile on his N7.
It a MVNO using T-mobile network. It has a $50 Unlimited Plan.
No Data Cap from what he told me.
I read over the T&C and it seems pretty good.
Just no P2P Downloading, Running a Server, "automatic data feeds"
Oh and no Tethering (stated in T&C)
It says they reserve the right to Throttle or Terminate your service if you break any of the T&C rules.
But nothing about a Data Cap.
Don't have good Coverage though (at least the coverage map they have sucks)
I will keep a list for any country if it is helpful. Thanks for the input thus far.

I put a SIM from an iPhone with the iPhone unlimited data plan into my N7 3G and it's working perfectly. I did have to create a new APN with the old wap.cingular APN. That is likely required for other AT&T SIMs with non-LTE data plans. If the SIM is setup with an LTE data plan it should work with the Broadband APN that comes predefined.
Someone trying an AT&T SIM should create an APN with these settings. I believe the username and password entries are case sensitive, so make sure you enter them as all caps.
Name AT&T HSPA+
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MICC 310
MNC 410
Auth type blank
APN type blank

Wow...I can't believe I typed Verizon. No sleep and a head cold got the better of me. Crazy since I have just been integrating responses from this thread into the top post. I also tried to take my contact lenses out this morning.....they weren't in. Makes me nervous about what I'm typing into my report at the office right now. haha.
T-Mobile
So I just bought a Nexus 7 32GB with HSPA+ and came to know that T-Mobile smartphone plans don't work on this device.
WTF?
Is there something I need to do get it to work? Like Root it?
If it won't work even with root enabled then I think this device is going to have to go back to Google.
thanks
C
What I've gathered from other threads is that T-Mobile have blocked the IMIE numbers of all the nexus 3g devices, effectively forcing people to use tablet only plans.
Others will probably confirm, but truth be told, probably best to use another carrier.

Does anyone know of a plan that is pre paid and offers the pay per day option as T mobiles? There plan was basically $3 a day that you used it. I don't use the data connection that much but want the option when I need it. Most of the time I can tether to my phone but there are those bad battery days when it would be nice to their out the $3 instead of not having service.
The ATT Mobile Data Share plan works if you add as a tablet. Its only $10 to add N7 3G to your share plan,

Just to clarify, did you have to cut down the Straight Talk Sim to Micro size? They only seem to offer the T-Mobile Sim in standard Sim card size.
A dumb question: what is a straight talk plan? Unlimited minutes one with or without data?
Thanks!

[Q] Note 3 not able to receive texts from other ATT subscribers

I have a TMOB Note 3 that I'm running on an ATT sim. My wife asked today why I didn't answer her texts, I never got them! She is getting mine, and I am getting texts from others, but I think the thing that's common is that all of the texts I am receiving are from people on Verizon and TMOB.
This SIM was previously in a Galaxy S3
APN settings are
NAME: ATT Phone
APN: phone
MMSC: http: //mmsc.mobile.att. net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att. net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: default,mms,supl,hipri
Any ideas?

On my ATT note3 the APN type is listed as
default,mm,supl,hipri,fota
That is the only fifference I see from the settings you have listed..
There are many more settings for APN however.

I think I'm getting closer. I think what's happening is not network related, but rather iPhone related. When my S3 died, I briefly put the sim into my old iphone before moving it on to the Note 3. So I think the issue is iPhones are trying to send texts to me via iMessage rather than standard SMS.
I took the sim out of my note 3, put it back into the iphone, turned off imessage, then put it back into the Note 3 and used my wife's iphone to send me a text, but it still didn't work. I don't know enough about iMessage to understand if this takes time to propagate or if I needed to leave the iPhone running for a while..... time to google, but I'm feeling pretty good that the issue is around this.
iMessage has nothing to do with AT&T. It's a Apple feature only for iPhone, iPod, and iPad users. If I was you I would take your note 3 to AT&T for help. They are pretty cool about.

ATT said to put the SIM back in the iPhone and disable iMessage. Exactly what I did. For now, I saw my wife had me set as having an iPhone in her phone, I changed that field to CELL and at least she can text me now. Hopefully the Apple infrastructure will pick up that I don't have an iphone soon.
I moved from iPhone still in contracted to the Note 2 using the same sim and never had any issue receiving sms and mms. I didn't have to change anything. Even my friends with iphones still have me showing as iPhone. But it I only moved from a AT&T phone to AT&T phone.
