What's the best thing you can do with broken volume-up? - Motorola Droid and Milestone Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Two years ago, I gave my milestone to my dad and i always keep his phone up-to-date with MS developement. Now its volume-up is broken and recently it get stuck at boot logo so i flash back to stock by RSD Lite. He's still using MS for work (with basic function) so right now we don't have time for fixing volume button.
I want to ask how can i boot to recovery or what can i do best with stock rom?

BUMP!
Same issue here, I'd like to know how to reach recovery without volume up? It has it's own thread back then I just don't know how do I found that...

If you can boot to Android or ADB to you phone, than use these commands:
su
reboot recovery

[Q] Captivate can't enter recovery mode

Is it possible to have a phone that can't enter recovery mode?
My phone is rooted and I can enter recovery mode through Rom Manager but I can't get there by holding volume+- and power. I'm afraid some day I might mess up my phone and be unable to fix it because I can't enter recovery or download mode.
Am I just doing it wrong, or are there phones that cant?
I'm still within 30 days of my phone purchase, should I exchange it?
Same here. I can't get the phone to boot into recovery to update packages to install root. Any suggestions would be appreicated. I just exchanged my phone for a second time for a media player crashing issue, I called AT&T and they told me to bring it in for exchange. I can't get the new one to boot into recovery.
Mine only seems to work if I plug in a usb cable while holding the buttons though I'm sure I just haven't found the right timing the usb cable seems to help for some reason. And no I'm not getting confused with download mode.

I was able to root using the one click root method, the one that's stickied in the development forum. It doesn't require you to manually boot into recovery mode.

I downloaded the oneclick however it is a .rare file and I can not extract the data with my pc for some reason. This is not my first time rooting a Captivate either so I have the tools and drivers. I just can't get into recovery mode and I am frustrated because without root I can not access my backup of Titanium or ClockworkMod.
I also am having problems getting into recovery.. Just got my phone today... I've tried about 30 times, and it absolutely will not go into recovery mode.
Works every time for me if i power off. Hold down volume up and down and power. Wait for the att screen to go off and as soon as it comes back on the second time let go of the power button and continue holding both volume button down until you see recovery booting. It works the same with a usb cable plugged in for download mode.
have you tried to get into recovery via adb , i always found that way a lot easier then pressing those buttons, pressing the buttons always hurt my fingers too much anyways.
From terminal in tool in the android sdk directory, you can do adb reboot recovery

i had the exact same issue of mine not working.. somewhere i had read it was to only hold down the UP arrow, not both up and down. I Just did exactly as you said and it worked perfect.
I am on my 3rd Captivate and it appears that the last two won't go into recovery mode using the button combo at all. My first Captivate did with ease, go figure.

Thanks I did it as you stated and it worked on the first try. Thanks a lot, you just saved me from agonizing over making changes to my phone in fear of not being able to get to the recovery screen.
If people are still having problem is suggest
1 turn off phone
2 count to 30
3 pull battery
4 putt in battery
5 hold both +,- vol buttons and the power
6 let go of power button when you see the att screen
Note: if that doesn't work than in step 5 hold the - vol and the power only or try to hold the + vol and power only.
Hope that helps even though it was said in the thread b4. Im just trying to make it clear
I've tried vol +&- with power.
vol - with power
vol + with power
I've tried letting off power at the at&t screen. I've tried one click root.
Nothing is working.
Edit: Lol, win 7 needs x64 drivers then I got it done through sdk. Still no hardware recovery boot though.
any chance this would work for our phones? Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant (GT-I9000) Software Upgrades for Handsets with Original Production Software
.by Samsung Mobile Canada on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 4:14pm.A software upgrade is now available for Bell Mobility Galaxy S Vibrant handsets, provided the device has original production software (JG9). The latest version of Kies has been tested and will resolve the three-button recovery issue
I've read on a forum once(can't remember where) that there are different models of the at&t captivate, some ship without the ability to use the buttons to boot into recovery/download. It also said that if you call at&t and tell them you want a phone that boots into recovery they'll send you one.
I told them that this was one of the principal reasons that I won't be keeping my Captivate. I returned mine today (the second one i have had, and after a Nexus One and EVO as well).
Ok i had the same problem i broke the screen on my captivate went to at&t
did a upgrade went to root it and could not get into recovery after reading all the
post and calling samsung (what a wast of time) i took the back cover off my broken phone looking for numbers what i found was a batch # under the sn#
my old phone had 1007# my new phone had a 1008# went back to at&t we looked
at all the captivates until we found a 1007# poped in a battery and went right in
to recovery i'm thinking mabe the new batch# had something different but it worked for me thought i would share

Which update? The JH7 one? I can't boot into recovery either. I'm running JH7 on an AT&T Captivate unlocked and using it on Rogers in Canada, with "1008" on the back of the phone. Maybe they DID remove recovery mode since the "1007" phones?
EDIT: 3-button combo fixed using C3P0LOL's fix.

[q] [help] moto milestone bootloop at android logo

I have a Motorola milestone (second hand) and tried to load a update for it then i noticed the following problems:
- boot looping at the android logo
-when i tried going into bootloader i get a blank black screen
-when i go into recovery and try to update using "update.zip" i get a EOCD error and another time i get a authorization error
WHAT TO DO????
Come on dude,
Just search EOCD error, I think you will find at least 15 topics.
You lost root, Nedd to flash vulnerable recovery sbf. You will find latest instructions on nadalbak site.
You can find site inside his cm7 topic. Milestone android development.
Sent from my Milestone using xda premium
i'm fairly new to the milestone side, the version that is on the phone is 2.2
Everybody's instruction is to put the phone in bootloader mode and connect to the pc but i only get a black screen and then the phone restarts hence rsd lite not picking it up
Put it in recovery and try to flash another sbf, it should work.
Trough rsd lite.
try that just now and still no response on the pc, and i know the usb port is working because i charged the phone
Are you sure your drivers for phone are correctly installed?
Explain correctly installed?
yeah so what about when i try going into boot loader and get a blank screen?
In the early development of moto driver's phone wasn't recognised by rsd lite.
I didn't hear of that problem anymore though. The solution was to reinstall / install drivers again or try on another pc.
Cable could also be a problem.
Are you trying to enter bootloader with the cable connected to phone? If yes try without and after connect it.
The cable isnt the problem, im sure of that and i tried on two other laptops but they are 64 bit windows 7 but anyways why when i press "power+vol up + camera" i only get a black screen and not black screen with other milestones?
I'm thinking thats the problem or reason why rsd lite not picking up the phone cuz its not in bootloader mode
Ahhh
It took some time since last used bootloader.
But I think is power + x for bootloader.
==== update ====
my bad that's for recovery
oky just tested:
it's power + up key from keyboard
now when i first pressed the power i got a black screen, so i pressed the power again while holding the up key .. and voila:
bootloader 90.78
battery ok
....
good luck ..
when this happened to me i was shocked so much , but then i got it fixed so yay
sigh was trying that from lastnight but no luck
Does anybody have a video to how this done because i'm wondering if i'm doing it right cuz i'm still getting black screen when trying to go into bootloader, i pressed "power + up button on DPAD" and then pressed the power button again but still black screen
While the phone is off, hold the up button on the D-pad and press the power button. Do not let go of the up button until the bootloader screen comes up.
while the phone is off? i can't turn off the phone because its just looping so i take out the battery then put it in and press up and power button so is that the right way?
Yes,
If it doesn't work, for pre 90.78 bootloader I think it was another combination of keys.
Google it
Got it all wrong, the problem was that a app was installed and then the phone was restarted then the looping start at the android sign
no luck, the ways i see is the same as urs

if you enter recovery try wiping everything / factory reset and see if it get into android.
other than this i haven't got any other idea,
it is possible to reboot it with adb if you got a rom that supports adb at boot. ex CM7. cm6 and froyo rom not sure but this is a long shot.

Want to change rom, but problem with power button

Hello ladies and gents,
I ahve a very simple question, i want to follow the CyanogenMod thread to change roms on my milestone because it is acting up on me and it def. needs a refresher, but my main problem is that my power button does not work anymore, and i'm afraid the only way i have for it to turn on is if i connect it to a computer...when i just connect the phoen to a wall it just shows me charging...but as soon as i connect it to a computer it officially turns on.
So, do i need my power button to be able to complete the rom change, AND, is there such a thing as a rom or an app that would allow me to turn the phone on with a different button????
Thanks for your help peeps it is greatly appreciated!!!

Since my power button is broken, if ever it shuts down or needs to restart and doesn't automatically, i don't want to have to unplug it and/or temper with it...so basically well, that was exactly my question; will i ever need my power button while flashing/changing roms on the device?
If not then i will go ahead and do the rom change.
My 2nd question was, since my power button is broken, my screenlock/unlock is also unfunctional and if ever my phone shuts off i can't turn it back on unless i connect it to a computer. Is there such a thing as an app or a feature(from a specific rom) that would allow me to configure the phone to turn on with a different button? Same thing for the screenlock/unlock.
I hope i explained myself better
Thanks for your time!!

Can't help you for the first question... Think it's impossible to boot without power button nor plugged USB.
But for the second, it's known that all CM (at least since 7) have this option : wake up with volume buttons
Some other ROM include it but can't tell you which one. Sorry.
What scoutme saying is correct, when the mobile is turning on and if u have pressed the camera button, it will trigger boot to recovery mode.
One more suggestion, why don't u use quick reboot widget, it has option to reboot to recovery. It does all what physical power button does. Try it out...

I've been dealing with this problem for about 6 months or so, if you are about to start from the scratch like sdcard partition and sbf and applying stuff I guess there's' no way you can do it...
All I did was downloaded the required ROM and placed in OR and I got a app for getting to recovery which is "Quick Boot"
Search on play store, its free ;which has got 4 options in it namely reboot, recovery ,boot loader and power off ...did it that way
Hope this helps

To wake up the device (booted device, that has a locked screen) you can slide out the keyboard. CM7 indeed has a setting to wake it up with volume keys. For CM9 I do not remember and CM10 does not have that option yet as far I have noticed (I could be wrong, though).
What ROM do you currently have? Motorola stock? CyanogenMod? What version?
If you have non-moto it is rooted and has a busybox installed. You can execute
Code:
reboot recovery
form Terminal emulator which will take you to recovery. You can also connect it to computer, open Command prompt/Terminal (depends on your PC OS) and execute
Code:
adb shell
reboot recovery
Ccommand
Code:
adb reboot
to reboot the device or
Code:
adb reboot recovery
to reboot directly to recovery should also work. I'm unsure if it works on moto stock.
(Make sure you have enabled USB debugging in Settings.)
After that you should be directly in open recovery menu. Or press Volume up + Camera button if "stuck" on triangle screen.
Keyboard key combo, Left shift + Right alt + Delete reboots the device.
No matter what method you used to turn on the device you should be able to boot to recovery: while device is booting press and hold the keyboard X (needs to be done early in the process) to boot to recovery if you have bootloader 90.78. For previous bootloader vesions the camera button should do the same.
To boot to bootloader you need to press and hold D-pad up while the device is booting. Afaik, command
Code:
reboot bootloader
will boot to fastboot mode which is of no use for flashing sbf files (I can only assume that 3rd party apps and widgets use that method to get to bootloader/fastboot). You need bootloader mode to flash vunerable recovery, if not done already.
As minor side note, you have posted a help request in a Development section. Plus, all of this has been discused already. It is mostly scatterd around but not impossible to find.

I get into recovery by plugging it in anywhere, PC or wall, then hold X while its booting, once the recovery screen shows up, unplug, let go, and press whatever buttons you need. If its not X that you have to press, press whatever you need to when its booting.

For your question 1, please install this in your phone: http://www.mediafire.com/?wvw2sde2eldw2x4
there will be two icons in your phone afer installed, one for power off (can reboot into Recovery)
,another one is screen off.
For the second, all CM6(cm7 not sure) have this option : wake up with volume buttons (setting>cm setting>input setting>volume rocker wake)
By the way, if the PowerLock.apk doesn't switch you to recovery, you may need to copy this to your phone:
http://www.mediafire.com/?kvq45p4nscjwf88
How to use 60autoboot_or :
1) copy it to your system floder first
2) change permissions as:
VVV
VXV
XXX
3) then move it to system/etc/init.d
4) REBOOT

My milestone is still on custom rom, which is why i wanted to change it!
i'm trying to follow the guides on how to do it but holy sh*t do i feel like a noob. i used to customize the **** of my old windows phone and i've been out of the cellphone game in a while so im confused as ****.
Nonetheless, you clarified some good points, i thank you a million times for your time and patience; i'm gonna go ahead and try to install CM mod on here and hope it resolves all of my problems lol (gl to me ...)

How do I install CWM when I don't have a Home button?

so yeah, I'm trying to flash CM7.2 to my friends Mini, but her phone has a broken Home button... so... I can't even get into download mode so I could use Odin to flash CWM to the device.
I got as far as getting it rooted, then I thought that I'd be able to flash CWM via RomManager, since I did that on my other friends Desire that had problems with some other button. But in RomManager when I choose to flash CWM it asks me to confirm my phone model, but doesn't show a option for the Mini? I checked on CWM's homepage and there they got a recovery for the mini so why isn't it in RomManager?
So anyone of you got any idea of how to flash CWM without that damn home button? Something as ADB or something?
Please help, this is so damn frustrating!
EDIT: SERIOUSLY NEED HELP ASAP! I thought that if I managed to get into the stock recovery I might be able to flash something from there, BUT APPARENTLY the stock recovery uses the Home button instead of the power button to choose an option, so now I'm stuck in stock recovery, can't choose anything, and when rebooting the phone boot back into the recovery! what the **** samsung? I can't get past recovery without a homebutton? not even pulling the battery helps!!! The phone is practically bricked now
Do not even think of using ROM Manager. It is responsible for many hard bricks for galaxy mini users.
Maybe you should get the home button fixed. :| Without that how you gonna multi task? Soft keys? Better fix it or sell the phone. Not worth keeping it without a working home button.

I know that the homebutton is rather important but it's not my phone, it's my friend's phone and she doesn't care if it works or not as she doesn't use the phone that much for multitasking.
oh by the way, I managed to get ONE successful home button press while in the recovery I placed a pen on top of the button and applied all of my super-human strength on that sucker phone rebooted normally, didn't get it into download mode though tried multiple times but no luck, just that one single press... might crack this phone open and see if I can fix that stupid button, or atleast see if I can short 2 contacts while the phone is open and get a home press that way
and I guess there isn't a way to flash anything on this thing without that pesky button
search on google for an application called CWM.apk it does work on our mini and it is a kind of rom manager
in command prompt type
adb reboot download and you will be in download mode

[Q] bricked droid 3 with broken volume rockers

My cousin asked me to install cm9 on his droid 3. Well I bricked it and it had one of those CWM recoveries where you have to boot to it from rom manager. Also the volume rockers are broken so i cant get into AP fastboot and use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339816 . EDIT: Sorry I forgot to include: the phone show motorola dual core technology but dosent advance from that screen. I can get into stock recovery, and i can get into the bootloader but cannot change the selection in the bootloader. Carrier is verizon.
