[Q] Does your Galasy s3 minis has nfc? - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got the device for a client, even though it says it has NFC on the re-seller webpage it clearly does not.
I would like to know if anyone actually has a device with NFC.
After some research i found out that the NFC Chip is actually in the battery, so in theory if you get a battery enabled NFC and then flash the proper ROM you should be able to get it enabled.:good:

There is NO NFC on the market just yet. Samsungs marketing Director stated at the october event that there WILL BE later an NFC version.
But NOT yet. Resellers are confusing people by saying it has nfc.
It is actually the reason why i am not purchasing this phone, which i really like, just yet.
Missing nfc chip = Dealbraker for me!

So if I don't get wrong:
NFC enabled battery + a I8190N port (you've already did one right?)= NFC for every S3 mini out there?

looking forward for a solid rock stable I8190N custom rom then.....:good:

I got nfc battery with my device(n version) and it works.. There are versions of devices, and i think only i8910n/l get nfc battery out of the box...

Can someone tell me please: if i get the N battery and i am flashing a custom rom but the one for the 8190N model, i will have the NFC? i am trying to make the wife happy.
i know the antena is in the battery (just like on my S3) but the NFC chip is also in the battery?
this is what i've found:
“The battery contains a built-in NFC antenna. Handle the battery carefully to avoid damaging the NFC antenna.”

The N version battery has 4 contacts - does your non N phone have 4 contacts?

N version has battery with nfc antenna out of the box, while for the models that dont, you have to buy a battery with antenna... i think all devices have built in nfc chip, so they just need antenna. If you are putting a custom rom, you should read about it, and see if it supports nfc, i think that all stock roms support it.
Sent from my GT-I8190N using xda app-developers app

3 contacts here.

From my knowledge it can't be with nfc inside just with 3 pins. 2 pins are power, i pin is charging control and we need a fourth pin to connect the antena. unless i am missing something, 3 pins means no NFC...regardless of which battery do we have

Hmm.. my n version has 4 pins, but if i remember correctly, i saw a post where somebody opened his device (i8910 version) and he saw nfc chip on the board.. now, if the device doesnt support antenna, why would the chip be there?
Sent from my GT-I8190N using xda app-developers app

just look here it says that the GT-I8190 standard NFC and has SBeam

That's an easy answer. It is cheaper to produce just ONE board for all the devices. As for versions, that officially don't have NFC it could be three variants.
1) The chip is working, but isn't connected via hardware (missing or cut wire leading to antenna)
2) NFC chip disabled by software (ROM without NFC)
3) All the charges, where NFC chip is somehow broken could still be sold as NFC free version with software disabled variant (Same as option 2)
The earliest thing I remember handeled this way was the Intel 486SX, which was actually a DX variant with just disconnected FPU (floating point unit). Back then you could often read about tricks like reconnecting the wires with graphit by just drawing a line with a pencil.

[Q] Does anybody else worry that the GPS "fix"

... will be the one already included in JG* or JM* firmwares?
If they had a fix they should have leaked it somehow in order for the devoted xda beta testers to test it for free all around the globe.. This is why I think that the fix might be just the dumpening of the signal along with an algorithm that would do dead reckoning (possibly by using also the compass / accelerometers of the device)...
Just a thought - still hoping for the best..
Yep it worries me big time. I'd almost bet my house the "fix" is a firmware we've already seen...which might be why it keeps getting pushed back so they can refine it even more...i hope so anyway.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I don't believe you have seen it in any of the leaked firmwares. I don't even know if Samsung have received the fix to leak to anyone yet.
I do believe I'm getting tired waiting for it though.
JM5 seems fine to me, it locks very quickly. Initial lock is within a few secs, even inside just jumps around a tiny bit.
Best case it may be fixed by something simple like using higher precision data units to improve accuracy, buffering the signal a bit to drop packets where accuracy temporarily drops or other changes to the algorithms. Worst case is that they release a new backplate for the galaxy S with a better antenna embedded. Someone has confirmed the gold jack behind the backplate is a GPS antenna port.
I've heard its a Broadcom GPS so it SHOULD be good (but unconfirmed, so unsure), and since Broadcom don't really do linux drivers, Samsung probably wrote the Linux drivers themselves (its quite clear Samsung are using new chipsets, because the SGS does have BT3, which seems to further boost this theory). Disassemblies do seem to point to a single chip handling Wifi/BT/GPS and other things.
Anyway, GPS is one of the more difficult things to test.. But JM5 to me is a HUGE improvement over the initial results I got on my original firmware (at the very least it locks much quicker), and certainly better than JG1-5 where I got NO lock.
So, I still have confidence. If the GPS isn't fixed by Froyo's release though, then I'll worry, but I have seen progress.

I guess it depends what they are whinging about. Any large company will invariably suffer complaints.
forget where, but there was a couple reports that the new release to the arabic market, that they're GPS's were on the money - has anyone tested the arabic market firmware?
I think if they had the fix, they might've announced it just so some prospective buyers wouldn't hold off, and maybe worse, get a different device.

I think an incremental approach would be better than nothing, as long as you tell users what's up, but I don't work in their marketing department. As far as an algorithm do any other companies do this? If so, then we have a perfectly logical explanation of where they went wrong and how much to expect improvement. Would this have no effect on battery life? These sensors are running as long as the device is in map mode anyways, right?

I've been using the arabic firmware myself. I find it to be the best one available. I9000JPJG8 Africa firmware from samsung-firmware. Locks nice and quickly with GPS - using my GPS test application (available from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7556720&postcount=13 ) my phone gets a full lock on 5-10 sattelites with <50m accuracy within 7 seconds while INDOORS! (Big window though). When outside, my app shows me getting a full fix without 2-3 seconds. Navigation works perfectly too. With other firmwares it can sometimes take 30 seconds before I can get a full fix.
Anyway, try out the app yourself. It lists the time to lock according to both the GPS, and according to the clock.

Don't take my word for it - I have always had satisfactory GPS performance on the JG series firmwares. (Well compared to my iPhone 3G which had terrible GPS performance).
You'd be better off waiting until the GPS crazies in the audience declare the problem fixed in 6 months time, when someone tweaks something to average off reported locations and give a smoother path...

I think Trav used a special kind of fix for that one. It's called Photoshop.
I'm still waiting for my GPS antenna (hope it didn't get lost in the mail, maybe the delivery guys use a SGS for GPS navigation to customers ahahah) and then maybe I'll have fatter SnR numbers to show too.
Today while driving home I used my Nokia E72 with Ovi Maps. I used to think it was rubbish both in accuracy and speed but after 4 days insisting on Galaxy S GPS usage... oh boy, the lame Nokia felt like a luxury high-tech nav device.. it was easy to forgive its occasional late instruction
Seriously, even if the fix deals with <20 SNR locks and 9+ locks, my instinct still tells me the antenna design is very ineffective and will never get better without servicing (hope I'm wrong).

Audience Chip? Maybe........

I know this has been beat to death..... and we have assumed that it didn't work.
I have an I896, and I found a submenu by accident, and I'm not sure if it has to do with the audience chip or not.........
I was on the phone, and accidentally hit the menu button while talking, a menu popped up, and lone behold in the bottom right corner of the menu screen there was an option for "noise reduction". I have never seen this menu before, and it is ONLY available while on a call.........
Could this be the option to enable the audience chip on our phones?

I am definatly using a captivate rom, modem and kernal..... In fact I even said that in my post.
Nobody has any insight on this?
nsf thinks an i896 isnt a captivate...
LOL
of course the i896 is more like the TRUE captivate
comes with side-loading and usb tethering NOT disabled.
Don't see that on Andromeda.
Audience chip is only available on the (kb1?) stock roms, or modified stock roms. (Idk if andromeda is i9000)
andromeda is a i9010 rom. that's the armani captivate. looks identical to the captivate with a different back cover and logos but have no idea if it has an audienec chip or non att phones are allowed to have a stock rom that uses it.
HHHmmmm....over 200 views and not one response answering my question.
Is it safe to assume that no one knows? Or are there people lurking in the shadows with information
AND has anyone other than Miami tried looking for this menu?
If you just want a confirmation, I don't have that option in Andromeda either.
Not on Continuum v4 either. But I will keep looking for it in a setting menu.

If I have helped press thanks.
My I897 with Serendipity 6.2 and onix 2.5 doesn't have have that on the dialer screen.
In your post you said you were using a stripped ROGERS ROM.
Since there is some doubt that the I-896 even has the audience chip,I believe that the kernel and ROM are different between the 896 and the 897.

If they're the same, how come I've seen so much doubt about the 896 even having an audience chip?
Is there any official information that shows that it does come with the chip? Got to wonder why, if it has one, that the Rogers ROM doesn't appear to support it.
Also, your arrogant tone doesn't seen justified when you can't even get three letters in the right order. It's nfs, not nsf.

Menu>settings>call settings> voice call. If its not there, its not supported by your current rom. If it is there, good for you. I verified the location on my wifes stock 2.1 captivate.

i think the rogers captivate almost certainly has the audience chip, perhaps the i9010 as well but the question is whether or not it uses it? and if we really need it?
also somebody must know, i mean there is so much talk about which modem enables it, if they know it is in the modem they must know what else needs to be present for it to work, whether it be rom related kernel related or both.
i mean what does this chip supposedly do that wouldn't already be accomplished in software that would be easy on resources? i imagine it is just a compressor/limiter and maybe has some vocal recognition to seek out non vocal sounds and play them over the signal in a reveresed phase. and maybe equalized to help tune in on the human voice. not at all that extravigant. is there something this tiny chip can do that would eat resources on the powerful 1ghz processor? why cant someone impliment better noise reduction into the kernel or rom? it seems to me that someone like supercurio with knowledge of the paths the audio takes would have no trouble enhancing call quality via a kernel module or an app or mod to the rom.

I have a noise reduction option there as well... Like I said in my first post..these 2 settings are not connected, I can turn them on and off independently of each other.
If you're going to express an opinion, you ought to state your reason for having it. What's your evidence for the presence of an A1026 chip in the Rogers phone? Are there any ads or other material that state that it has the chip? AT&T makes a point of promoting the fact that has the chip, does Rogers? The chip requires hardware support; two microphones are needed.
From what I can see (go to lloydwatts.com for more info about the chip's capabilities) the chip offloads a great deal of signal processing, relieving the cpu of the burden of doing the complex processing. In my experience manufacturers don't add processing hardware unless it's really required for adequate performance.
So, while I don't know for certain whether the Rogers phone has the chip or not, I have yet to see any clear evidence that it does. And, I think it's quite clear that there's no way to duplicate its performance with software alone.

because according to an owner, the board is marked as i897. not i896. it appears that it is identical in every way. yes it is possible for them to exclude it on the machines and just reuse the board, so it is just an assumption.
is there any way to ping the chip? maybe it can be tested?

I threw it in Sony's face today...hope i get it back soon.....!! till then i have to manage wirh a Lumia 710!!
What a weird coincidence I have just switched from an 710
To the point
My device does sometimes get a bit hot especially if more than a few wireless connectivity options are on.
This usually results in apps not running properly
If anyone else is having this problem
Accses what they will check first which is the sony factory service menu which can be accessed by putting *#*#7378423#*#* into the dial on the call app. Once in go to service test and go to test battery health this will indicate if there is a fault with the battery
And other options can indicate hardware faults that may cause this.
Other than that it sounds like Sony have had a miss on yours instead of a hit so yeh give it back
Hope this helped

BTW i already Sent it into Sony Service Last Saturday! still didn't get any news on my Phone! If i get the option between a Refund and a Replacement, I would definately get a Refund! I would get myself a Nexus 4 or something.
The thing with your phone is (i think) quite normal but mine heats up and the Battery just goes DOWNHILL!!
Hope i get a Solution!! Living off a Lumia 710 again now....thank god i didnt sell it or something! :good:

Your unit may be defective. But if you think you're going to avoid the heating problem with a Nexus 4... mate, I think you are wrong. The Nexus 4 has a well-known problem among users called "throttle" that our Xperia SP doesn't have (at least not mine)
Done!
Hello People,
I got my Phone back from Sony and now it's really cool....but it just warms up a bit when it's GPU is used alot..!!

Haha don't worry Bro that sticker doesn't do anything. Just gives an indication on the location of the nfc antenna inside the phone (;

He is talking about the black sticker that's over the battery INSIDE the phone, it has nothing to do with the NFC sticker on the back cover, don't worry about it.

Hahaha, you're correct.
That is the NFC antenna he removed.
Anyway, back on topic...
If you want your phone to stay cool, you will need to flash a different kernel and ROM.
Only then are you able to tweak your phone so it doesn't overheat again.
Downside is that you lost your warranty. Ah well, if it's broken, buy another phone.
Another thing, "extended warranty" is a joke. Never trust sales people that tell you to buy this extra package.
They will look for any excuse not to pay you if something bad happens to your phone.

[Q] Note 4 internet/call issues

Hi Guys,
I just adquire my Note 4 from a friend and i'm having lots of problems to conect to the network in my country, i live outside of USA (Dominican Republic), somethimes it makes and receive calls, somethimes i don't receive any calls but can make it but when i make it the other person can't listen to me (i've tried with diferent phone numbers) also the internet 4G/LTE is no consistent. In summary, i'm having lots of signal\internet issues with my Note 4.
My question is, is that a hardware issue or i need to try with other baseband or modem to fix this?
please give me some light as i'm losing my mind with.
thanks in advance...
Miggs
I would first create a new apn specific to your carrier...
Then i would check to see if in fact your running the latest modem for the device..
But start with the apn...

Thank you for your help @Flashvetrin i checked the APN and it is correct, my modem is also the latest available UVU1ANK4 (not 100% sure did not find any other on internet) for t-mobile stock rom, some say this could be internal hardware problems but i dont think so because the phone make some calls and internet works sometimes but is not consistant.
i made a hard reset and i worked for some minutes but lost signal and went back to this behaivor again.
really don't know what to do now..
thanks in advance.

Can you take the device in for a sim upgrade???? Does the device recieve stronger signal anywhere in your area???? Interesting how your saying that after a hard reset it helps..
Try using short cut master from the playstore use #2263 launch0 and run 4 thru 8 ....

It is most likely coverage problem. My understanding is that biggest cell provider in DR is company which uses cdma technology. Do a little research which gsm provider has better coverage in your area and if lte bands used are compatible with your note4.

I've done all of the steps you mention and nothing gets better, it just works when he wants (most of the time it donesnt). I will try installing a ROM just for testing purposes.
I changed my SIM card for the newest LTE capable one. @darekz im on Claro and they are GSM\LTE.
Thanks in advance,
Miggs
I did do quick search and appears that claro using lte band 4 which is supported by Tmobile note 4. Just to check can you disable lte in phone settings and see if daya transfer improves over 4g. With poor lte coverage phone will constantly fallback to 4g and keep looking for lte.

Hi @Flashvetrin,
The baseband is K4, i flashed the NJ and it keeps almost the same behaivor, i can say K4 is a bit better as at least i can make calls, no calls with NJ.
build.prop, i dont know how to edit it and i'm note certainly sure about it as it can brick my phone.
Let's assume it's a hardware issue, is the hardware in charge of control the siganl interchangable, can i buy it on internet, or is my phone destined to be a clip for papers??
BTW, i installed another ROM and it's the same, no way.
Thanks for all your help,
Miggs

Question what was the behavior of the phone like when it was in the us????
Fyi there are things that can be changed..
(ALOT) of things in the build prop..
your phone wont brick....
I promise..
But if your not comfortable i understand.
It may be that the modem hsic just isnt or doesnt respond on "this" paticular network..
The phone that you compared it to was it purchased in the us as well...
If its infact an International Version it may have some bearing.....
No its not a paper weight...but i am starting to run out of ideas/solutions...
Please be paitent.. im gonna consult some else as well..

The phone is the same, a TMO Note 4 bought in US and taken to DR, that's why i say this could be a hardware issue as my SIM worked very well on her phone.
I will try with other baseband and let you know.
Thanks.

Redmi K20 pro brand new with Google Services

Hi guys,
I bought a K20 pro from an HK shop, I asked for a brand new sealed unit. Package arrived sealed but I suspected it may have been re sealed since the box is a bit ruined, also internally.
Also when I powered the phone on I immeadetely git a prompt fir updating Google Services, which, as far as I know should not be installed by default on a CN unit.
Your insight is really appreciated.
Thanks.

I also bought Chinese model with "global Version". Its nothing you should worry about. Flash EU Rom or one of the available custom Roms.

Thanks Pete, my ROM is in Chinese, my concern is that the phone has been opened and used, these guys use to install GP and sell the phones, but I asked for a sealed unit.
As Google Services were already installed I believe they resealed the package and sold it as factory sealed. I hate this.

The Chinese phones do come with Google services already installed and enabled. Everything else Google needs to be installed, but the services are there by default.

Sometimes they do not listen to your wishes. But there is nothing to worry about. Enjoy ur Phone!
Thanks for your input guys,
Yeah phone is ok, but the CN rom is a mess... I requested the bootloader unlock it will be done in a week. I ll test it a bit like this and on case I ll try a global rom.
Cheers
D.
Yes, original China phone don't have Google framework
Right I checked with the seller and he says, with a bit of an attitude, it is not possible, it was factory sealed.
He sent me a picture with his stock and they were all sealed like the one I got.
Maybe quality control on CN products isn t as a good as for the global ones, because the inside box looked terrible.
So yes, I ll keep the phone, I ll flash a global rom once I can unlock the bootloader, in a week.
At the moment I have a bit of an issue with the 4g connection switching back to H+ 4g isn t strong in my place but still it should be fine, the phone switches back to H+ as it is more powerful I guess.
Anyway I can make it stay on 4G even if the signal is poor?
Thanks

You can try changing the preferred network type to just LTE.
It's in the network settings. Then select mobile network and then select advanced. You should see the preferred network type setting, normally it's set to all types.
Hi all, I can affirmed and confirmed tht Chinese ROM do comes with Google Services under "System App Settings".
First update MIUI to the latest version. Now all you have to do is to install Google Play store, Google Account Manager, Google Play Services, Calendar Sync (enable Autostart), Contacts Sync (enable Autostart).
Google Play Services Frame work is also installed on latest Chinese ROM. You need to install Google calendar app and reboot the phone to sync in Mi Calendar. Now you can go to manage apps and "show all" delete almost all Chinese apps.
There is absolutely no need to install other ROMs unless you wanted to get rid of Mi Wallet, Mi pay and other apps tied to the ROM.
Thank you all for your input.
Last doubt, today I realized the black cover that was in the box is different from the one I see in the unboxing videos, the one which is open at the top and bottom.
Mine is instead all closing with holes for jack and pop up camera. It is still black but with no Redmi branding on it, there is no brand whatsoever.
Anybody got the same cover?
Thanks

The default case is a thin plastic case with soft texture feel, and not a slicon case as shown in your attachments.
China ROM packaging
yeah received exactly the same package, box was sealed (altough I am still unsure if it was resealed) but the case inside was the one I posted.
Maybe they changed the cases for some batches?
The case and the white bag where was placed seemed pretty much new.
Thanks,
D.
