Dell Streak PDMI connector modded for mini USB

I checked out John's website over at http://www.linuxslate.com, and while I don't have time to look at everything now, it looks like there's a lot more info there, including pinouts and pictures the board.
I'll read through everything later, and may have to order another cable from Dell to give it a try.

Instead of cutting up dell cords, anyone have a clue where we could get raw pdmi connectors?

I don't really see the point - you've still got to plug in the PDMI connector so what's the advantage?

Well, you have a point.
If you plug in a mini USB to USB-A cable into the adapter I made, you end up with exactly what you had in the first place (With the Dell Cable): PDMI to USB.
Furthermore, There's the cost:
Their way: Dell Cable: $20
My way: Dell Cable to destroy + Something to get the mini Female USB + mini USB cable + labor = >> $20
But, there are 2 points:
1. I have shown that the Pin-out of the Dell implementation of PDMI is known. USB breakout is just a simple demonstration. Manufactures can built lots of different breakout cables and docks.
2. It is far easier to carry the tiny adapter that I made than it is to carry the Dell USB cable. When I already have standard mini USB cables at home, in each car, and a couple at work, I really don't want to have to buy half a dozen $20 Dell cables, just to have one at each location I might need it. I can connect the little adapter I made to my key chain, and always have it with me, while hardly knowing I am carrying it. My little adapter is far more durable than a cable (especially since the Dell cables seem rather stiff).
He's another what's the point question:
What's the point of having Audio on the PDMI when there is already audio on the 3.5mm jack?
If I had a Audio/USB breakout adapter, I can make both connections with one action (such as when getting in the car.), and I don't have wires sticking out of 2 sides of the device.
Perhaps if you wanted to use your Sony Walkman Cassette Player in your car instead of it's built-in 8-Track deck, such arrangements were acceptable, but I was under the impression we had made some progress since then.
(For the record, I'm not old enough to have actually done that.)

Just my opinion, but I'd rather carry around an adapter that I could plug any one of my numerous USB chargers into (wall, car, etc...), than buy new chargers from Dell (especially at the prices they're charging for them).

I also would much rather have one adapter as shown except perhaps a micro-usb on the other side in addition... If we are going to have an adapter, make it multifunctional.
If we want to get really crazy, put a micro switch between pins 2&3 on the USB (or whatever the pinout is for data in/out so we can use any USB power supply, but open it for syncing if necessary

Another advantage if you could actually buy just the raw pdmi connector form some kind of electronic component whole saler like digikey or newark or something, you'd probably be talking about something that costs 2 bucks to make instead of paying 20 for a cord.

I bought the slacker G2 dock and tested i with the streak. Initially, nothing would work, no charging, no audio output. So i decided to take it apart and check the pin out.
So opened it up, took the board out and checked the usb pins, it was correctly mapped to the right pdmi pins, was dumbfounded why it did not work.
Then I just plugged the board in to the streak and lo and behold it started charging. When it was in the dock, I think the streak was not getting seated properly on the pdmi connector, because of the thickness of the plastic top cover. The headphones and line out ports do not seem to work though, I will have to do some more trouble shooting.

Keep us up to date on this.
I am VERY interested in this for desktop charging.
this would be HUGE, since if you don't need the HDMI out, why pay for $70 at Dell?!!

If there was some way to create an adapter that slid in flush with the phone, that would be perfect. Nothing extra to carry, just snap it in and you can use any mini/micro USB cable.
Get on that and let me know how it's coming along.

now that will be very handy... keep one of those handy and most cable issues will go away

I saw that and the accessory port looked like a PDMI - I hadn't read anything, tho.
Perhaps we will see more as more devices have the plug.
perhaps Dell is on the leading edge more than we thought!!!

PDMI has been around for a couple of years but no one has used it until now, the Samsung connector certainly looks like a PDMI but it hasn't even been released yet so there's no way to tell for sure.

I saw that accessory for the Tab on engadget.

I asked the dude who made his own PDMI to USB adapter if he has seen some markings inside the connector he used, no reply.
Could it be the Molex (or whoever is the manufaturer) part no is mentioned in the official PDMI specs?

I checked DigiKey and Newark for "PDMI" and got zilch.

OTG cable angled "correct" for the N7

I thought I saw a thread about this a long time ago but search as I might I can't find it again. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had a link to an OTG cable that angles...well...down if the N7 is in landscape mode with the camera on the left side? I've ordered 3 and they all angle up which really doesn't work well in a case or anything since the "hinged" side is generally on the left.
Hopefully this makes sense. LOL
Alternatively, does anyone have a link where you can buy the male MicroUSB connector? I've tried Amazon, Monoprice, and even Radio Shack (that's desperate) and can't seem to locate this part.

here is the one i have.. You must also get a micro a usb to a usb female adapter.. Not sure i ordered from the same company but i know it was over seas.. i bough them as a set one up angle one down angle..
that is term.. down angle micro a usb cable... Be careful that you do not end up with a usb mini which is a b type connector..
micro a down . look close at the picture so the flat part of the connector port is to the top . which is the back side of the plug. ok that all sounds confusing but . well here is the link..

One more thing.. Make sure its a 5 pin if its not usb. just slit the wire carefully and cross pin 4 and 5 will turn it into otg. Or use a otg connector at the end... This is what i did.I pluged my otg connector into this.. and its stil flat to the back of device..

I don't think the down angle would work. Basically, when plugged in, I want it to angle to the left side of the device. It seems most angle to the right. Then I could actually put the cable and flash drive inside the case and out of the way so it would be more "permanent" when I'm out and about.

I'm all for angled cables, but the down angle one doesn't excite me. I was much happier with this style cable:

This isn't an OTG cable, but I use this in my car so the cable is tucked away neater. I had the same confusion when trying to figure out if I needed left or right. I ended up buying both because my phone is one way and the Nexus 7 is the other, so I knew that was a win/win. Prior to realizing that I just hit up Google image search and looked for a larger picture of each one... then tried to envision how it would plug in accordingly.

Hmmm. Mine faces "down" when the camera is on the right side. The smart case folded behind from the top.
I got mine from Amazon for my Galaxy Nexus a while ago.
Those listed above from eBay are wrong. Those would actually attach front to back (screen to back housing) and would be awkward IMO.
Mine attaches and the cable slides down the lining of the trim. I got it from Amazon.

My otg comes straight out but I have 3 adaptors. With the N7 in portrait, one lead will go left, one right and one backwards, all came from eBay.

Good Solid Usb Cables?

This may sound silly, but can anyone recommend a good quality USB cable for charging the note?
Back when I had my Motorola Photon, the usb cables I had all ended up crapping out because the connector that plugged into the phone would bend or something causing it not to fit snugly in the usb port. I would have to put something on the connector when the phone was changing so that the pins would stay in contact.
Then I invested in a bunch of these cables: amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-Cable-Micro-Meters/dp/B003ES5ZSW
It's a surprisingly good cable and the connectors are solid so they always stay snug when you plug it in.
Now that I have my Note though, these cables are no good for charging anymore. For some reason, they can't carry 2amps to the phone; I'm not sure if it's the length or the gauge of the wire that's the problem, but my phone charges unusually slow when I use one of those cables in the stock usb charger.
So, I'm looking for a tough usb cable that can carry 2amps and has solid connectors like the Amazon cables. The one that came with the phone is alright, but it's not as thick as the Amazon cable so it doesn't feel as tough.

Are you sure it's the gauge of the wire that's thick and not the housing?

Quite proffessional & robust aspect , microUSB fits tightly and firmly, connection is actually stable even with very used devices with worn connector. Works where others fail .The length is perfect for charging and working with the computer.

I like to buy the older OEM cables that came with the S1 and S2 on amazon for like 3 bucks with prime. I Suppose they aren't the most rugged, but at like 3 bucks (or less) who cares? I buy a bunch of them so I can have them all over the place, and I have spares. They charge my note2 just fine... though I haven't really tested any comparison charging really.

That looks like the HTC cable I've got which i hated because it has memory and the connection between the head and the rest of the wire looked flimsy, but this one could be different.
Personally, I think the cable that came with the Nexus 7 is pretty robust, but the best one I've ever used is the one that came with my Nokia N900 (the long one, not the icky little short one, although both share the same build quality).

point is the USB 3.0... in short I guess you won't find cable for Note 2 what knows the 2A. Your best choice it is if you buy an USB 3.0 extender (you know the connector is colored to blue inside = 3.0) for the orig Samsung cable

That makes no sense. For charging it doesn't matter what micro usb cable you use. I'v been using the cable that came with my original Droid, it works just fine. Also pretty sure the Note 2 isn't usb 3 capable.

The are ruggedized cables inn Amazon but the cable is more rugged not the connector. If you are worried about repetitive connecting killing the cable then get a dock. I use the genetic dock I had for my GS3 and the note 2 actually fits better on it than the gs3 ever did. I'll find the product link for both on Amazon.

You might also take a look www.monoprice.com . I've purchased several micro usb cables from them (from 3 ft to 6 ft in length); good quality, lasts a long time. Lifetime warranty. They're made with heavy gauge wire, making for a thick cable, so it won't be a flexible as some others, though.

I only charge my phone at work using my monitors USB jack, i use one of these Nokia USB cables - http://www.all4phone.com/data/gfx/pictures/large/5/1/15_4.jpg
It charges it fine for my daily use while in work, though obviously not 2A.
It's been in use 5 days a week for over 2 years and has never bent or broke.
I don't know how people come to break Micro USB cable ends, I've never broke one ever!

I've struggled with a variety of the longer, non-OEM micro USB cables - the Amazon Basics you mentioned, cables from Monoprice, etc. I had problems with all of them, either not providing enough current, or just flaking out within a short time. At one point I thought my phone had a problem with the micro USB jack (it didn't). Then one day I found a great cable on Amazon:

I've been using this cable for several years now, and it has proven to be very durable (I've run over it with my office chair a number of times), and has always provided the full current of the charger I am using with no issues at all. I purchased another one recently to use in another location, and the quality is the same. I've been using these cables with all of my phones, and currently with the Note II.
First post! I felt this suggestion was important enough to un-lurk after 4 years

The "new" samsung stock cable seems very nice. my favorite is still the kindle cable. good quality long and charges EVERYTHING.
that DX cable also loos very nice I may have to order a couple of those.

That's what I meant, the jacket on the wires is thick and makes the cable feel tough, but I have no idea what the gauge of the wire is.

Most micro USB 2.0 cables have 28 AWG for data and 28 AWG and 24 AWG for the two power lead cables; if one were to use regular 16AWG lamp cord to act as power lead current shunts; to help enable the micro USB 2.0 cables to carry enough current; to be able to pass up to 2.0A for the hi current carrying charger adapter for a typical Samsung Tablet 2.0 A charger application; when ones Samsung tablet battery has been fully depleted; perhaps this can be confirmed and/or verified using an USB based Power Monitor that measures both voltage and current and the also displays them both to easily see the voltage and current real time values; as the Samsung tablet battery is being recharged?

I just bought a bunch of the OEM Samsung Note 2 chargers off Amazon. The charger is rated at 2 amps so I'd assume the cable is, too. Although I've never tried to monitor how much current the phone is getting while charging. Seems to charge faster on the OEM 2 amp charger than on all my other crappier chargers.
In my experience the cheap cables and chargers from DX aren't good. They were fine on my old WinMo phone but anything up to and including my old first gen Galaxy doesn't deal well with the cheap cables.

Oem chargers are only available from samsung, official samsung online store or authorised dealer with the official samsung box, or through samsung service center without the box, other places are just A+ quality chargers from china that looks identical.
As long as it's a good quality cable, it should give you the acceptable charge rate, the note 2 does not charge the full 2A current.

Well they came in Samsung packaging and I can't tell the difference. They were like $20 a peice instead of the usual $5 or so for cheap chargers so i hope they're OEM.

I presume they are oem, trust me a A+ quality one from china looks identical, i needed another one, so I took my out of the box charger to china to buy another because it's cheaper, but many of the shops say they are not oem.
They are too expensive in hong kong.
Now I have a hard time getting a note 3 one.

if you do want a good quality cable, have you consider getting some professional made one's, i've also seen some sold at shops that sells professional headphones and portable power amp for phones, they have cable, but at a very very good price, anything from USD 25 to USD 150.

I have packed my oem cable, that came with my note away, that way i know i will always have a backup cable that works for certain tasks that i need to be sure are done without fault.

Note 2 usb cable that doesn't fall out?

I'm one of the many who has a Note 2 who's charging cable falls out VERY easily. A slight tug will pop it off and this is very worrisome during file transfers or flashing (!).
Can anyone recommend a micro-usb cable that fits more snugly into the Note 2? Preferably one longer than the stock cable. I know these exist since my car charger fits perfectly and doesn't fall out as easily.

I know a few of my motorola chargers fit much tighter than any of my sammy chargers. Might try one out. Sammy has always had issued with their charging ports. The thought of my old gnex port brings back bad memories.

I use the charger I had from my tab 10.1 and a blackberry USB cable for data transfer/charging.
It's not always the port on the phone that's the problem. My wife and I have the note 2 and she uses her factory cable and it's very loose. I use my old blackberry cable and it's almost too snug. You really have to tug on it to even get it to wiggle.

If you look closely at the end of the cable it has 2 small tabs and if you lift those with say a razor blade or needle just a little they will keep the cable from falling out. Just lift them enough so as not to break them. When you insert the cable it will press them down as needed. Worked great for me.

Any place to buy the official Nexus 7 USB Cable by itself?

I have another microUSB cable but it slips out sometimes, and doesn't charge the Nexus 7 unless you hold it at certain angles. If anyone can point me in the direction of getting a replacement ASUS micro USB cable like the one that comes with the Nexus 7, or even one that people have found is a snug fit with their devices,and isn't prone to falling out, please let me know. Thanks for the help.

Do you use this with your Nexus 7? Because I've heard that some microUSB cables' pins on the connector aren't long enough to reach into the Nexus 7's and that's why the microUSB cable I'm using now is so flimsy. Do you know anything about that?

Theoretically It must work, because the OTG cable we are using is micro USB B to USB female.
I think some people must got their cable from a bad store that cause the defect you're talking about

I use whatever lead is handy and have had no problems but I avoid buying cheap chinese ones. Problems can be caused by a combination of badly made/loose plug and a loose socket
