Recently, the ROM "H-Delicious" for 4.1.1 was released and there was an option to restore it to your stock ROM in SS3 because it saves space. I was wondering, once a stable release of Batakang ROM came out, could I flash it to a ROM slot, back up that ROM slot, wipe my stock ROM slot and then restore using the backup of the slot with batakang ROM on my stock slot? I was thinking about this and it seems to make sense. I'm sorry, I know I'm being lazy by asking other member of the community to test and help out on this suggestion, but im still quite new and could use more experienced input.

Hello,
I just got Galaxy S i9000 with outdated gingerbread DarkyROM installed. I am going to update it to one of JB 4.2.2 ROM so I was wondering if anyone could recap the proper process? Here is what I plan to do:
- update recovery
- nandroid backup in recovery
- full backup with Titanium Backup
- wipe data/cache (factory reset)
- flash new ROM
Is that it? Or have I forgotten something?
I would also greatly appreciate recommendation for a nice, stable ROM. It should be as much bugless as possible since I won't be able to update it for a while.
Thanks for help!
Back up ur efs (imei)
As for which ROM that's more tricky I'd say you would be best finding a ROM you like the look of and ask people posting on the thread their opinion

you need to go cm9 first through cwm flash the file twice it will bootloop first time then cm 10 then pick a rom one thing you should know some people experiencing loss of data connection on jb but hey if you dont try it you will never know ics is pretty stable good luck
I'm running ARHD 11.0 which is a 4.2.2 ROM. I want to go to a 4.1.2 ROM to I can run a 4.1.2 kernel. Is this just as simple as flashing a 4.1.2 ROM from recovery?
You have to wipe your phone when going from 4.2.2 to 4.1.2. If you want to keep everything, just get SuperBackup or Titanium Backup and back everything up.
Thanks. I don't mind wiping my phone. I just want to know if it's straight for to go from newer ROM to older ROM.

No problem It is always better to wipe anyways going from a ROM to a different one just to make sure you don't get any errors and bugs.
Just to make sure I'm in the right page...the ROM comes with the kernel, right?

You can either install a custom ROM based on 4.1.2 (which most likely means you'll have to find an older version of a current custom ROM, like Android Revolution HD 9.x or TrickDroid 6.x) or you can download and install a RUU which will basically wipe your device and install the official, stock 4.1.2 for it which you can then root and install a kernel to.
if he just wipe data, and flash from 4.2.2. to 4.1.2, he can get the 0 folder in his internal memory (and just move everything?), can't he?
well I remember to have a little problem with my s3 when i did that, but you can try... if you have problems wipe everything including internal sd and flash again... (but of course you may need to flash thru sideload or OTG)
AND YES, the rom comes with the kernel, if you come from a HOX (for example) you dont need to flash the kernel manually, as was needed in the HOX
Thanks guys! Will try that

no issues that -I- know of.... all radios work
you SHOULD have the stock safe using safestrap
-cm flashes on slot 1 only or it will not boot
the first time you flash yes you will lose stuff BUT use TB to back up your stuff first
root and install safestrap 3.11 first and then we will talk.
download it from here

I forgot to mention that my phone is already rooted and on stock jelly bean. Ive installed safetsrap via the link you provided me and installed recovery but safe system says not active
P.S. dont worry about the backups science i know how to do these myself via rom toolbox.

very first option on the top left in safestrap should be the area to make a new slot..
just make it 1GB and again make sure its in slot 1 or it won't boot

I think he was talking about leaving his stock ROM intact and flashing another stock ROM in another slot... (I do that to perserve pure stock)
my setup is as follows
Slot-0 = Pure Stock with the ability to uninstall Root
Slot-1 = cm10.1/PAC/Carbon (A.D.D and cannot decide lol)
Slot-2 = empty
Slot-3 = Liquid
Slot-4 = Stock with permanent root
The reason I have it set up this way is if I need to bring it in or deal with anybody I can instantly switch to any ROM I choose.
select Slot-0 and uninstall/hide root and uninstall SafeStrap BAM! the phone has never been touched. Reinstall SS3.11 and
switch back over to Slot-4. I need something tested.... choose Slot-1
so as you see it is like using Boot Manager...
i've got a question: i flashed a 4.2.2 rom then did the deal with the sdcard to straighten out that. used that rom a couple days, but 4g was acting up, so i went back to a 4.1.2 rom, after backing up the 4.2 rom, now my question is if i restore the 4.2 rom will my file partitions be messed up again.it's not a big deal i was just wondering,
WELL, iguess i'll find out when i do it, won't i.
I am a bit nervous to take the plunge and try out Xposed on my Active. Just rooted it yesterday, installed the Google edition Rom. Now I am wondering if Xposed will work on stock or the Google Edition. I will give it a go if no one has tried yet.

Xposed works fine, I haven't run into any problems. Since you're using SafeStrap anyways there's no harm in trying things for yourself. Even if something does go wrong you can always wipe your slot and start over, that's pretty much the whole reason for SafeStrap.

Good to know. A possible stupid question here, would it be best to load my back up of my stock onto one of the ROM Slots? To try out the Xposed. I am coming from HTC One X, so roms and such are done a bit different, I am not quite used to the ROM slot.

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to do. In your first post you mentioned that you have the GPE ROM installed (I assume you have it in slot 1) and you want to install Xposed to it. There should be no problems doing this since ROMs are independent of each other and do not share any data.
I think what you really need to know is how SafeStrap works. Basically, SafeStrap creates new ROM "slots" while preserving your stock ROM "slot". These slots are completely independent of each other and only share a kernel. So any changes you make to one ROM will not impact the other. Now it is possible to flash a new ROM to your stock "slot", but this is not how SafeStrap is intended to work. Ideally you install a ROM to a new slot and use that ROM as your daily driver. The stock ROM is supposed to be your fallback in case you mess anything up with your new ROM. You are more than welcome to modify your stock ROM or even install a new ROM to your stock slot, but if you do this and you mess something up with your stock slot you could risk bricking your phone. That is why it is recommended that you don't mess with your stock ROM.
As for your original question, there is no need to install your stock ROM to a new ROM slot since it is already there, all you are doing is taking up twice as much space on your phone.

I understand I was a bit unclear. I do have the Google edition installed, but I am encountering massive reboots. I was going to uninstall it and install a backup version of the stock in to the ROM Slot containing the Google edition. I understand I do not want to mess with my stock Slot, that is why I wanted to install my Stock Rom into the Rom Slot I made. Which, sounds like it is the safest bet.

I would recommend deleting Slot 1, recreate it and install the GPE ROM again. A lot of people have been using it without issue including myself. The only known problem with the GPE ROM is computers do not detect the phone as a usb mass storage device when using the ROM.
If you are having issues with reboots I suggest deleting the slot and starting over from scratch. Also make sure your slot is big enough for the ROM and anything you're going to install. If the slot is too small you could run into the issues you've mentioned.
As to installing your stock ROM to a slot, why not just try another ROM? There are plenty of regular S4 ROMs that work on our phone. You are not limited to the ROMs that are found in the development section of this forum. There are at least 5 other ROMs I have tried and I'm sure there are many more that work as well.
I guess I'm just missing the point of why you want to install your stock ROM to another slot if you already have it? I'm sure there are ROMs already existing that can do what you are trying to modify your stock ROM to do. I recommend trying out Hyperdrive for tons of features. I personally use the GPE ROM found in this forum. Check out this thread for more information on ROMs that work with the S4 Active and SafeStrap.
@Devo7v, thanks, will reinstall and give it a shot. Thank you for your time.
