[Q] Upgrading to newer GDX from xrecovery - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
I got one X8. It has Floyo by Racht v.0.30 (Android 2.2.9), stock kernel 2.6.29 ([email protected] #1) and xrecovery mini-alpha.
I want to upgrade its ROM to GingerDX. I have read that GDX versions newer than 0.13 have to be installed with CWM.
I have read the forums across but no answer to this specific problem.
My question is: can I install x-parts and not brick the phone?
I do not know the exact version of xrecovery - it says just mini-alpha.
What is the safest way of upgrading to GDX on stock kernel and (rather old) xrecovery?
Thanks all!

install CWM and flash GDX :good:

It would be best if you unlock your bootloader, flash Custom kernel with CWM preinstalled and then flash latest (or whatever) version of GDX

Is there a way without unlocking the bootloader?

some older versions of gdx can be flashed by xrecov, and they also have cwm. or you can use x8toolbox to install cwm on your device.
Sent from my rooted tomato using tapatalk

Here is how I did it:
1. Downloaded CWM-recovery-4.0.1.5-e15-Amend.zip to SD card
2. Rebooted to xrecovery
3. Install custom zip and chose CWM-recovery-4.0.1.5-e15-Amend.zip
4. Rebooted - Floyo was unusable
5. Downloaded GingerDX 029
6. Rebooted to CWM
7. Cleared cache, dalvik and battery cache
8. Installed GDX custom zip
Works nice!

is this normal?

When I change my stock rom 2.1 to gingerdx v19 I use CWM to do this. To start out with I have version 4.0.1.5 of CWM but after installing gdx it gives me version 3.2. So GDX override my original CWM version. Is this normal? Can I prevent this kind of downgrade? SO where is my newer version - does it get wiped over?
It usually happens. Since Ginger dx has a preinstalled cwm. Gdx must have lower version
.IV got cwm that is your CURRENT version (3.). Hope you understand more bout it now. (We were all noobs at one stage )

hey i have the same problem....i used naA kemel which quotes it has cwm 5.x.x but when i installeed gdx v20 it opens up with cwm 3.2.x
i am all ears as to how we can correct this situation
I hate to have my CWM downgraded for no good reason
First install gingerDX then flash the alfs kernel v05 it over rides the stock kernel with a new one and it is including CWM 5.x.x
Hope i helped
Sent from my X8
so what you are saying is install the one with latest CWM last so it will override the previous, which brings to yet another question - is it OK to flash the rom first before the kernel? So you are suggestion this sequence:
flash stock rom-> unlock bootloader -> flash gingerdx -> flash custom kernel
Precisely like that

[Q] Each ROM stuck at boot screen

Hi, this is my first thread.
I tried to install GingerCruzt 8.4 on my X8 but failed. I am on stock 2.1 ROM which is rooted and xRecovery installed.
I don't understand where I was wrong.
1. Boot into recovery
2. Full wipe
3. Choose install custom zip
4. Again full wipe (also tried without this)
5. Reboot
6. Stuck at boot screen (picture with girl and title GingerCruzt) for looong time (15-20 mins)
Do I need to wait longer?
I also read many threads about this but didn't find solution.
Also tried to install FroyoBread 023b via xRecovery but same thing happend.
CWM Recovery came with FroyoBread and I tried to instal GingerDX 021 but no luck. Same problem.
What is the solution if it is solvable?

I'd rather not unlocked bootloader.
@sidewalk_
Tried full wipe but did not help. Maybe I missed something?
But I think you must!
I also try to install FroyoBread and it stuck at boot screen. It does not need custom kernel. I think that I missed something, but what question is now?

YOU have the wrong Baseband you need x15
Thanks for help.
Tried everything that you wrote. Restore with PCC, full wipe, wipe dalvik, battery cache but nothing.
Baseband xxx015
Kernel 2.6.29

Can be problem a busybox (1.17.2)? When I rooted phone I installed busybox by coping it to /system/bin without installing it via market (this tutorial youtube.com/watch?v=sJIU5qIdC-w). Same i did with chargemon and xrecovery. Now I find that busybox needs to be installed via market.
Is there a diference betwen chargemon in this tutorial above and that one in stock ROM.
Me again
I tried to repair with PCC, again.
Rooted with SuperOneClick folowing this tutorial (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046605).
Rebooted.
Than I copied chargemon, busybox and xrecovery to /system/bin/
Rebooted.
Enter xRecovery.
Flashed GingerDX v013 via xRecovery
Rebooted
Enter CWM Recovery
Flashed GingerDX v021
Flashed Addons for stock kernel
Full wipe
Reboote
Stuck at GingerDX logo for 30 mins than I pulled batery out
Baseband xxx015
Kernel 2.6.29
Build 2.1.1.A.0.6
Also I tried to flash this (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105745) via xRecovery and tried to install v021.
Btw, I tried to instal Floyo 1.0 but nothing.
I am out of ideas. Please help )
Solved. SD card was problem. Probably bad one.

flashing CM7.1 official

Hi guys, i have a small question.
I have installed back in august in gf's X8 kuya droid and i want to replace it with CM7.1 official. i am kinda lost with unlocked bootloaders and the rest, phone is now rooted with latest kuyadroid xrecovery and CWM 3.XX in it.
As i have it in my mind, the process is to install the new CWM 4.XX in xrecovery and then boot into CWM and flash CM7.1 as normal (wipe data/cache/dalvik and then install zip from sdcard).
Or do i have to do something else ? i also have a backup of the original rom, do i need to restore this and then flash CM?
thank you for your time

OK, you need to first unlock your bootloader by following the guide linked below (It is a lot easier than it lookas at first glance, so dont be too scared about it);
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254225
Unlocking the bootloader is the hard part, once you're past this you're laughing.
Now jumping ahead a bit....
Once the phone has an unlocked bootloader, all that is left to do is flash a custom kernel and loader (loader and bootloader being different things as the guide explains). Note that all the the custom kernels have CWM already built in as part of the kernel so you wont need to worry too much about that. Once done, flash the rom and GApps Enjoy super fast Android OS.
NOTE: I had problems using the FlashTool provided by the guide, instead I used the most recent version of FLashTool which is easily found via google.
Good luck!
If you need any further help either reply here or PM me!
Good luck!

If by "CM7.1 official" you mean the Shakira ROM by the FreeXperia project that's for download on the CyanogenMod website I strongly advise you against it.
The ROM is buggy as hell, feature incomplete AND the "too low volume on calls" hasn't ever been fixed.
If you want to take the trouble to install a custom ROM that needs a custom Kernel I'd rather recommend you nAa's MiniCM7 2.1.9 ROM and nAa v11 Kernel.
Take my word that the FXP CM7 Shakira ROM isn't worth the time and effort.

Agreed. I'm running the latest MiniCM7 build with nAa Kernel; It's amazingly stable... B.Jay you're so efficient and helpful.... thumbs up! You've already helped me today and I see you're back helping others!
yeah, i did some research and found that cm7.2 official sucks big time.
I have decided to install kuya's latest 4.5.4 rom, thing is that when i flashed 3.2.175 it installed xrecovery and cwm 3.XX simultaneously, i mean if you choose to reboot it gives you two options
-boot into xrecovery
-boot into CWM
i dont know if 4.5.4 version can be flashed with CWM 3 version or xrecovery, dev. wont mention.
I can even find CWM 4.xx version for this phone, damn....
I have never upgraded CWM version 3 to 4, any guides on how to do it?

You can flash kuyaDROID 4.5.4 with either version of the recoveries, though using CWM is recommended.
About "CWM and xRecovery": Be glad that you have both as CWM version 3.x.x.x has a bug that creates defective backups. Meaning: you can restore a backup you created, but chances are that your device won't boot. Creating a backup through xRecovery is the safe fall-back here.
At any rate - puppet13th, creator of the "x8Toolbox" and "ODEX (on any ROM)", is currently attempting to make CWM 5 work. I already gave a beta-test version a try, but it locked up at the Sony Ericsson logo.
In short: See the dual recovery installation as a welcome gift, not something that "gives you two reboot options you don't want to have".

[Q] Unable to flash GingerDx V023

I previously had GingerDx V022 and it was working perfect.
Today I tried to Flash GingerDx V023 Using Xrecovery V0.1
I even initiated a full wipe and also wiped dalvik cache etc etc
But every time I flash , I get stuck at the SE Logo , unable to go back to xrecovery. Then I have to use PCC And re-root all over again.
I tried to find CWM V014 , although Xrecovery always worked for GingerDx (all previous versions)
But couldn't find it.
I havent even customized GingerDx V023. Just tried to directly flash it after downloading.
Doesnt work
What is going wrong ?
Help Please I really want to upgrade to this ROM
Xperia X8 E15i
GingerDx V022

it's same problems with me. Just waiting for helping by another peoples
Use ClockworkMod - it's absolutely necessary. You could use toolbox http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117100 to obtain double recovery. Then just tap the screen (dual recovery) or buck button to access CWM.

[Q] Installed a Custom Rom and phone bricked, what was the problem?

Hello everyone, i have Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 11w43, android version 2.1, rooted.
Today i installed the rom GingerDX, i think everything was correct, i had
- Busybox installed
- Rooted
- Xrecovery installed
...
when i selected the file update.zip it told me that The rom was installed and i rebooted(i thinked that i must factory reset after rebooting from the options menu) and my phone bricked(stops on SE logo when starting)
I used SEUS and fixed the problem, but i don't know what was the problem
must i do something other to work, or its because i have 11w43?
If i do it again and do fullwipe directly after installing the rom will it be now working or not?
i need help

- flash alfs kernel
- wipe dalvik cache and batery stats from CWM
- factory reset

are you on stock kernel?
1. do not update busybox if you are.
2. use cwm, not xrecov. if using xrecov use v13 and below.

your phone's bootloader is locked..
so for a locked bootloader you have to install a Stock Rom..
if you install a custom rom on your stock kernel..i.e locked bootloader your phone will get soft bricked..
go on the GDX page again. and look for the stock rom.. ! your problem should be solved.. :good::good::good::good::good::good:
Source: Did the same mistake
then realised the difference between stock and custom roms!
