I plan on visiting an AT&T store this week to see if I can get one of the data-only tablet sims for use with my captivate. Am I barking up the wrong tree here? These would be the type of sims used in things like the Galaxy Tab, etc. I could get by using VOIP if I could save a couple bucks a month. $25 for 2gb should do me just fine. I'm just not sure if they'd let me do it.
success! the kind folks at AT&T had no qualms with giving me the 2GB data plan for my captivate. they had to get a legit tablet serial number from the back room to activate the Sim, but all went very smoothly. only problem I see now is that the mobile internet service is horrifically slow. is it possible that i'm not configured to male use of the full 3g capacity of this thing? speedtests are coming in at about 30kbps.
edit: nevermind. 3g kicked in after a few minutes.
here's my configuration for getting the $25 2gb tablet plan working on my unlocked captivate.

Is there a way we can do this without going to a at&t store? My town doesn't have one. Just buy a tablet sim online directly from AT&T?
I'm not sure, but I tend to doubt it. The guy at the AT&T store had to activate the Sim using a serial number he obtained from an unopened tablet box in the back room (very awesome of him to do so). Normally I think you can activate Sims directly from your device, but in this case it would read the model of your phone and fail to activate. I'm still half expecting to hear from AT&T in the near future telling me my device is ineligible for this type of service, but so far so good.

True, crazy thing is i just got your message, I really need to get with the program.
All,
After reading posts and complaints about the Galaxy Note being flagged as a tablet in AT&T's systems, I set out on a mission to fix this erroneous error. I contacted the President of AT&T and heard back from the Vice President. After several phone conversations later, the Director of Marketing was able to identify the error and fix this issue resulting in Note IMEI's to appear as smartphones, not tablets.
In short, buy the Note, put your SIM in, and your good to go. No issues with accusatory tablet texts. Here is the message I received (names redacted)
**********
I just spoke with our supply chain team and we figured out the issue – a digit was transposed when we loaded in a set of IMEI TAC ranges to our systems in October and this resulted in classifying a subset of Samsung Galaxy Note products erroneously. Your IMEI range was not impacted and your product will work without issue and without concern of losing your unlimited smartphone data plan experience.
To be clear, you have not actually received any “alerts” from AT&T about data plan eligibility because you have not moved your SIM card into the Samsung Galaxy Note product as of yet? You can do so without issue at this time.
***********
So, I'm not one to take credit, but I sure did take this issue to the top of AT&T and it all appears to be well.
Great news for us Note users in the US. AT&T know knows it's not a tablet.
Enjoy the best device ever!
Eric
EDIT: It seems my solution didn't necessarily remedy all Galaxy Notes. That said, you may still encounter issues. If you do, I'd recommend contacting AT&T for help. I seem to be good for now, but still feel I will get flagged at some point. Unfortunate, really, but that's par for the course given the unique nature of this device. AT&T can't seem to classify it as a tablet or smartphone, when it's clearly a smartphone with a slightly bigger screen.
Thank you! Is there a reference number or of the sort which we can reference to just in case the 'text of horror' or any issues occur by any chance?
One point of caution: he said "my IMEI range has not been affected." I have no idea if that means my Note, which was from Germany, is any different than a Polish one or otherwise.
The best thing to do is if you get a text from AT&T about a tablet plan, contact the highest executive you can and be very professional (it's easy to find emails). This issue can be fixed as evidenced by my post.
Good luck!
Out of respect for the individuals who helped me, I'd rather not post their information all over the web. Just google for AT&T executive email addresses if you run into trouble and go from there. Remember, if you do contact someone, please be professional in your communications. *****ing will get you nowhere.
Great. I will do so! how do you check the nationality of your GN? I just ordered it from Amazon, so I am not sure where it will be from.

FWIW, mine from Amazon was German. Outside of that, they are sourced from all over, so I can't help beyond that.
Just to be clear what happens if I call AT&T up and have them put my IMIE number in. Will it now be accepted by AT&T and will I then have the proper APN sent to my phone automatically without having to put it in manually? Has anyone done this now? Thanks for getting this straightened out it sure takes a lot of pressure off everyone.

You don't need to call AT&T, just put your sim card in your Note. No matter what you do, I don't think you can make the network automatically provision your international Note with the correct APN settings, you'll have to do it manually. It's very easy to do, though.
Excellent news that they have fixed the issue with the IMEI # error in their database!
Thanks Eric!
Now has anyone that got blocked before put their SIM back in and using it? I am still a little worried because the email didn't say that they changed anything, only that yours was ok. I will wait a couple days until i get my TMo SIM in the mail; then if they shut me off again at least I can go to TMo edge. Right now I'm using my N1 and tethering it, but the idea of the Note is so I only have to carry one device.
Soooo...this is for all of us? If so, you're a hero man, seriously.
That's awesome Eric. I have a Note on the way that I was resigned to returning because of this issue. It's a Christmas miracle!
Eric - what APN are you using? Phone, PTA or wap. Cingular?

Wap.cingular is only for 3g speeds. If you want the "4g" speeds use "phone" as your apn and make sure your 4g data is enabled on your account.

Thanks Eric.
Another question. I am using an older, I'm sure 3G SIM. I've seen references to a 4G SIM. Will substituting a 4G SIM for the 3G SIM -- I'm already on a metered $G Smartphone plan -- make any difference re obtaining HSPA+ speeds?

Awesome
That's great news. It's such great news I decided to order the phone from Amazon. And it's arriving tomorrow!
Earlier in the day I went to a local AT&T store here in NYC and had a long talk with a sales rep. He told me there was no reason why it should not work and that he would exchange my iPhones sim for the right size. I explained to him all the issues and he said if it's not a tablet there should be no problem. I'm glad the higher ups at AT&T agreed with him.
Glad to hear you had your issue taken care of. Hopefully you didn't screw all the note medianet users over in the process...

First of all, if you are using the Note on that plan, you are out of compliance.
Second of all, if you are spending $700 on a device, get a piggy bank and save $15 more each month to finance your data plan.
Third of all, that's a pretty jerky comment. I didn't do all of this as a self-serving prophecy. I merely wanted AT&T to recognize it as a smartphone, not a tablet. For everyone, not just me. Nobody cares that you and others are skirting policy by sneaking a data-heavy phone onto an old medianet plan.
You are working the system and frankly I hope you get caught.

Eric for the past 7 years I've used unlocked unbranded phones on at&t. When I insert my at&t SIM into my unlocked unbranded phone OLAM's only option for data was the 10/15$ medianet plan. How am I skirting the system if AT&T's online account manager is telling me to select medianet for data?
Should I call at&t up and tell them I want to pay more money for data? Tell me how to proceed?

I don't care how you proceed. All I know is my Note isn't viewed as a tablet any longer.
Outside of that good luck with whatever you have set up. It's not my concern.

So fellow IncS users, us Aussies are stuck with Optus. As much as we love Optus, there are many things we don't love as much about Optus.

Personally, from my own experience Optus have been the best mobile company I've dealt with. My wife is on Vodafone and they have been abysmal from the off and given the opportunity I'd break the contract in a heartbeat. I'm currently on Virgin as is one of my kids and I'm currently in a battle with them over a $900 bill which has arrived following a 'free' handset upgrade (which took almost 3 weeks to arrive after they messed up the original order). When questioned about it I was told the fee was an equipment charge, despite the fact I pay a $5 monthly handset charge.
On the other hand, I upgraded my other daughters phone with Optus and it arrived less than 24 hours later and the threw in additional credit on the monthly allowance as a thankyou for renewing the contract.
The only issue I have with Optus is the flakey coverage where I live but it's the same for many services as so many use the Optus network. But in comparison to Vodafone, Optus coverage is light-years ahead.
My home phone is Optus, my whole family's phones are Optus, my home broadband is Optus. Customer service isn't half bad compared to Telstra and TPG. Once, when I churned my Internet to Optus, they told us that there would be a 2-3 day delay on modem deliver and then the compensate they didn't charge the first bill, which was 60 dollars.
Sometimes they send their promotional spam via SMS though, and that's annoying. Besides that I've never had a poor experienced with thrm

Yea that may be true, but when you have ur internet, home phone and 4 mobiles connected to optus, it gets annoying.
1. Optus Broadband can be slow and can be fast, many times the router doesnt respond and we have to resort to restarting it. On top of that, when we first connected with optus 4 years ago, they sent us a broadband router which would often be slower than dial-up. We later found out the router was buggy and ordered another router. A week later They sent us another one, and they mucked up the order and they sent us a router which was not wireless. (No Wifi). After another week, we got our current modem which is still quite slow. At this point we gave up and were content with what we had.
2. Last year, one of our devices could not connect to the modem. We called up Optus and asked how to deal with the problem. After 1 hour, (30 mins on hold and 30 mins of rambling) we hung up and i decided to ask Mr. Google. It turned out that it was a small security feature which thought my device was an unknown device, and blocked because of security. I just disabled it and voila! Thankd Optus. -_-
3. The coverage of Optus is pathetic compared to services like Telstra. Most of the time i find myself Holding my phone to the phone to the sky just to get 1 bar of reception. Not to mention that mms problem with AOKP roms.
4. Optus used to have good internet packages (1TB of data for $129) but now they are extending their prices and it is $100 for 300GB. Come on.
We are not changing because it is too much of an effort to switch. We have been loyal customers for years but they still do not have any loyalty offers at all. All standard prices.
Lift ur game Optus.

I found that Optus had been pretty good in Hobart alone, Hadn't really ventured too far out of the metropolitan area as I was 14 and still under my parent's wings. But I'm with Telstra now, which is good. I got my phone from canada, just so I can use Telstra 3G on the INC S
Well my wife and I are with TPG who use the Optus network. While coverage may not be as good as Telstra it suits most of our needs. I went with them for the value/price. I pay $35 a month to get $1000 of calls and 3gig of data which is all I need.
The only bad part is AOS/KP roms and mms. I think I've got it sussed now, a bit of mucking around but not unbearable. Time will tell.

i was with optus back before digital... still have the same last 6 digits... i had 4 phones on their business plan, and always thought they were looking after me so to speak, never had any issues with reception or customer service but only 12- 18 months ago I heard about amaysim, who use the optus network, and their deals were so much cheaper, so i rang optus and asked if they would match amaysim's prices, they said no, and the rest is history. saving approx 50% each month.
I still have one of optus's fusion modems with an amaysim sim in it haha

From what I understand, Optus uses WAP 2.0 as the protocol for MMS. This option isn't available in AOKP builds, only IPv4 and IPv6. Which is why it works over WiFi, I guess...
Not sure if there is any way to get around this.
It's a shame...
There is a way around it that seems to be working for me. Setting it up is the hardest part and that is just removing 1 of the items in mms APN settings. I briefly outlined it the Unofficial CM10 thread. If anyone is interested I can do it all here. I'll try to be a bit more comprehensive here.

Sorry for this being a bit long winded. And if all else fails go back to step one and reload the default APN's!!
Here is a brief description of how I am now able to receive MMS messages on Unofficial CM10 with Optus AU as the provider or carrier. This is not my work but derived from reading a lot of different posts with various ideas and things tried.
First I went into CM10 settings and restored all APN's to default. When this was completed I deleted all the APN's except the 3 Optus (Optus Internet, Optus Yesinternet and Optus MMS). Optus MMS will be the only one with no select button alongside it.
I then open up the Optus MMS APN and one of the last settings is 'APN Type'. I removed the 'mms' from this line and left it blank. You now save and back out from here. Then you look at the APN's there should now be a select button alongside all of them.
I then open up a message and go to the settings and under 'Multimedia (MMS) Messages' I have de-selected 'Auto-Retrieve'.
That is the only 'Settings' that you need to change. Now it is only a little inconvenience when you use the phone. No matter which APN you select the Phone and SMS will operate normally.
When I get a MMS I then go into the APN select screen, select 'OptusMMS' back out, activate 'Flight Mode', wait a short time, then de-activate 'FlightMode'. When I see the 3G/H/E symbols turn up I then open the MMS message and hit 'Download'. Your picture should be downloaded shortly.
Similar applies when I want to use data. go into the APN select screen, select 'Optus Yesinternet' back out, activate 'Flight Mode', wait a short time, then de-activate 'FlightMode'. When I see the 3G/H/E symbols turn up all is good to go.
Using 'Optus MMS' even though you see the 3G/H/E symbols on your signal strength you can not access data, internet etc. And similar using 'Optus Yesinternet' you can not download Multimedia files.
You now need to decide what is more important. Do you spend more time using data and only get the occasional MMS or do you send and receive a lot of MMS and only use occasional data? If Data the leave the phone using 'Yesinternet' or 'internet' as your APN. If MMS then leave the phone using 'MMS as your APN.
I'm not sure what the difference between 'Yesinternet' and 'interent' is.
They both appear to have the same settings!!

Optus have decent signal and plans. They are also linked with TPG which is great for a cheap deal. BUT all the other providers are dominating in signal and quality. I also remember being really annoyed with the huge delay of the Official ICS update for our beloved Incredible s. They also have terrible call centres. But its all stuff that can be put up with.

Ok something fishy is going on here. I just got home and looked at my wifes phone. She still has the same APN settings I had. Her phone is working ok. I have tried ever APN setting I can find. Nothing else works but the one in the first post. I just done a factory reset and its still the same. I was wondering if it was a location thing but my wifes phone still the same, Something is going on with my phone or other Straight talk is screwing with me.
My data now keeps freezing up Wtf ?
My data is about twice as fast now.. But.

Doesn't work for my byod at&t sim. Maybe straight talk will start carrying new at&t sims that work w/ those settings. Those settings r the same as net10's.

Create/save/select it for about a minute . then reselect the apn you were using. Do not delete the new one.

I just had the same experience. My AT&T Straight Talk Nexus 4 data stopped working yesterday, but my wife's phone, also on AT&T Straight Talk, continued working without a hitch. My renewal day was yesterday, too, but my wife has a different renewal date. My data stopped working at around the same time I got the email from them indicating my auto-charge was successful.
I called Straight Talk and was given the runaround that my data was disabled because I was violating their terms and conditions. I told them I categorically was not violating them, which is true - I use less than 1GB of data each month, and don't even watch Youtube on my phone - then demanded to be transfered to a supervisor. I was connected to a supervisor who was more helpful and gave me the new APN information, and I was soon back up and running.
The good news is that performance during my morning commute seem much better with the new APN. Perhaps AT&T started kicking Straight Talk customers off of att.mvno at the end of their monthly cycle and Straight Talk is scrambling to get them on their own APN? I have no problem with it if that's the case and the APN performance is OK, but it sure would have been nice to know in advance...

I think you are on to something. My renewal date was today and I lost all data. Changed the apn and all is well.

my end date was yesterday too... on two phones.. got off the phone today with ST with a new APN.. well SMS/Phone/Data are working, but no MMS i can send from the phone but its not reciving them. anyone checked this?
This may very well be the case. My wifes service ends about the middle of the month. Looks like they could have said something when i was on the phone with them for 30mins, or an email!!!
My mms is working
i can send MMS to my email [email protected] but cant recive them. i get a notifcation for Message Not Downloaded! any ideas
I'm trying not to panic, but it may be that Straight Talk is going to go downhill from here :^(
AT&T doesn't want to subsidize it's services anymore, I don't want a T-Mobile sim!
My renewal date was yesterday and my data went totally offline. I googled it and found the "new" apn settings on the ST website. I updated and everything works except MMS, I can send but not receive.
I spent hours going to dozens of websites, entered new apn settings at least 25-30 times to no avail, and spent an hour on the phone with ST support (they didn't help at all).
Hopefully this is just a transition that needs some time to resolve a few bugs. Clearly the MMS server/proxy is having forwarding problems.
Oh we'll, I've pinned this thread and plan on checking it often to see if there are any developments.
Same here... No warning, just lost data yesterday - coincidentally the same day as my subscription renewal. After fighting with settings all day, noticed new APN info on ST site. Entered and now working perfectly. WTF?
For those of you who may be interested in a SIM UNLOCK for our new S5's, I just wanted to report that I was able to use different SIM cards in two ways:
1. Without entering any codes or making any changes, I inserted my Straight Talk sim card and the phone booted up and switched on to the AT&T network without any prompts. In order to get data working, I had to enter the Straight Talk APN manually, at which point I was able to use 4G data.
2. I then removed the Straight Talk sim and rebooted the phone with a T-Mobile sim card. This time the phone prompted me for an unlock code, which I entered from a website that I had paid for an unlock code. The unlock was successful and I was again able to make calls on the T-Mobile network (I did not test data since I had no credit).
So for those of you who are like me and use Straight Talk as your monthly service, you should be able to use at least some of the Straight Talk SIM in the SM-G900A without modification. If you are also like me a travel out of the country routinely, you shouldn't have any problems buying an unlock code online right away in order to use local sim cards when you are away from home.
Hope this is helpful to someone!
PS Does anyone know how to make new APN profiles persistent? I noticed that when I removed the Straight Talk sim and put in the T-Mobile SIM that the Straight Talk APN I had entered went away, even when I put the Straight Talk sim back in. It would be nice to have the Straight Talk SIM permanently on the phone (or on the sim card?) so I don't have to input new settings every time I swap sims.

Which unlock website did you use?
The apn will reset unless it's a custom Rom but usually you can just hit menu & reset the network settings to get the current sim's apn. Only done it with T-Mo & at&t sim's but it might work for ST..
Giving the website would help more

I had tried to include the website link in the original post but XDA said that I am still too junior to post outside links. The website is called Swift Unlocks and a Google search should lead you straight to their page advertising an unlock for the G900A. I went with that site over a few others that I had previously used because they specifically said they could unlock the AT&T version. I received the code in about 10 hours.
does any one know if the att s5 will work on tmobile HSPA+ and LTE??

depends on if you are in their 1900mhz refarmed area for HSPA+. but it will work on their LTE.
ATT S5:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SM-G900AZKAATT
FREQUENCIES AND DATA TYPE
LTE: Bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/17; HSPA+/UMTS: 850/1900/2100MHz; GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz;
T-mobile S5:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SM-G900TZKATMB
FREQUENCIES AND DATA TYPE
LTE: Bands 1/2/3/5/7/8/4/17 HSPA+/UMTS: 850/1700/AWS/1900/2100MHz GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
For what it's worth, I was able to connect to T-Mobile LTE here in DC but couldn't test the speed because I did not have any credit on that account.

Straight Talk uses AT&T towers so...
In case you meet the requirement (i.e., 60 days for phone bought in full...), you can also use the AT&T portal to unlock the device free...

Just purchases the unlock from SwiftUnlocks for my AT&T Galaxy S5. Will report back soon.

Haven't gotten anything yet and it's been almost 24 hours. I sent them a message and within 5 to 10 minutes they got back to me and said since it's Easter they'll have to take care of it tomorrow.
You don't need to be unlocked if you are using a att sim straight talk in a att phone.

I just did this today for 2 S5 and a htc M8 on Straight talk, Straight talk uses mostly AT&T towers or T-Mobile towers depending on area.
To get the galaxy S5's to send and rec. txt messages properly with attachments I used the following settings..
settings
more networks
mobile networks
access point names
click +
Name: straight talk
APN: tfdata
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS Port: 80
Some have tweaked the following as well:
MCC: 310
MNC:410
Auth Type: PAP
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
IPv4
IPv4
Bearer:uspecified
MVNO type: None
You dont need to unlock your phone to use a straight talk att sim. Its a known fact

Exactly. You can use any AT&T MVNO without having to sim unlock.

to my knowledge the s5 is world phone capable so long as it uses same technology of the service your connecting to for the most part will not require an unlock code. With that bein said, some carriers are carrier locked and would make it to where you need the sim unlock code to use on there network.. therefore international use should work and some carriers within the us will work.. carriers are also starting to provide unlpck codes to customers upon request (my job at us cellular) being one.. however, with uscc currently only provides unlock codes for certain devices and tge newer phones and s5 are not available to give out at this time.

Anyone have a method to unlock the GS5 on AT&T now that we have root? I refuse to pay money for something that should be a basic consumer right, simply on principle. I know back in the good ole' days on almost all the older Samsung Galaxy phones you could copy off a .bak file and browse through it with a hex code editor. I wonder if that method still works.
Just FYI

Just so you know, The APN is still remembered by the phone. If you put the Straight Talk SIM back in the phone and check settings it will be there. It's not like the older devices where they would all show. It will only reflect the APN for either the default carrier settings and the current SIM carrier setting that is being used at the time.
