Hi all,
what is the difference (in performance, stability, usability, features) between CM9 and CM10? What are the drawbacks and negatives? Is it worth upgrading? I
I am currently on a CM9 stable which I find very stable and functional.
Any help appreciated. Thanks

I would think its definitely worth it. CM9 is outdated, first of all, and second, CM10 is Jellybean, meaning it has project butter improvements that CM9 (ICS) does not. You can feel a big difference in speed, both browser and around the ROM when you upgrade. I definitely recommend trying Slimbean or CM10. CM10 is just as stable as CM9, IMO. CM9 also doesnt have GNow, unlike CM10. (You could probably get Gnow for ICS too, but it just wont be as good as Jellybean's Google Now) Good Luck, hope you upgrade! Battery life is pretty good for me too.
PS I know it shows on my signature that I have a Vibrant and not an i9000, but that doesn't change the fact that CM10 is obviously faster than CM9. If I were you, I would make a Nandroid of CM9 and flash CM10 to try it out. Most people are already on it and absolutely love it.
Hello,
So, I had the same dilemma as you having now... until about a month ago i had the CM9 and then i switched to the CM 10, i used the CM 9 for about two months and the CM9 stable from when it got out to the air.
in my opinion CM10 have a lot faster browser, a lot of little nice tweaks and little changes that are great (e.g. fast redialing, retexting etc.) About the overall speed i think it feels almost the same maybe a little better for the CM10
in the CM10 you have the Gnow as written above....
Now the cons: i have a lot more app crashes in the CM10 then in the CM9 (btw generally its not a lot at all, but the 10 have more of them)
and i think the CM9 was more battery friendly...
one last thing i think that the latest CM10 nightlies are better then the stable one... but thats you own choice
anyway, i like it new and shiny so im using the CM10 and i love it... you can always turn back to the CM9 if you're disappointed
*sorry for bad english
Allway fun to try the newest
Top reason for going from CM9 to CM10 (or 10.1) is to try the newest
I did try several version from older CM9 to newest CM10.1 - Nothing really exceptional, but always small neat improvements
For me battery and performance has been more or less the same ...
Thanks to all of you who replied.

is not an issue for me (no offense), I need to have a stable and working phone, not to bother with constant flashing... I was just wondering if it is better to keep the CM9, or the newer performs better.

It performs much better and it's rock stable (try Mackay ROM 1.6.1 which is based on CM10 but it's closer to stock JB). If you've been on JB once, you won't want to go back to ICS.

Thanks, will give it a try. By the way is there a reason to go for nightly instead of a stable CM10?

Hello
I am trying to flash an stable ICS rom for my brothers phone but I really can't find anyone without major bugs. CM9 = to much bugs, Nyx RC 5.0 is just pure ****, Slim ICS (what the **** is wrong with the font?) So can someone recommend me a nice and clean ICS rom that is stable enough for daily use?
I just installed CM9 today and it works pretty good despite the camera and the radio (and now there are alternatives to avoid those bugs too).

CM9 is sluggish as hell so I wouldn't recommend that either. However I don't really understand your font issue with Slim ICS. It does only have 5 system languages but you can install additional fonts to display languages via the "Updater" app included.
In your case as you've eliminated Slim ICS, I guess ICS333 (Team 3xtr3m3) is probably the best one out there. AOSP based with toggles from AOKP and offers a good balance between performance and battery life, with no bugs I can really tell.
Team-Nyx (RC5) yet the most stable rom for me on ics and its pure AOSP

Actually I find cm9 to be the fastest. I've gotten the highest benchmarks compared to slim ics, aokp, etc. Plus I have a bit more trust on cyanogenmod than aokp. Team nyx is pure ics stock but its really slow. Cm9 all the way for me always.

Hi !
Unfortunately, though ICS is extremely good the Custom ICS has it's quirks !
This is because they are developed without source codes from Samsung and no matter how good they are, at a certain point they show their lack of support which they never received from the manufacturer in the first place and therefore after a few days ( or if lucky, weeks) things don't work properly and needs reboots frequently.
Having ICS is like having a short love affair.
Use Gingerbread or change phones.
Sad fact, but true.
Look at the custom ICS camera and look at the original ICS camera. Do you think that we are going to get all the goodies in the SGS ?
Similarly, there are many great features of ICS which the developers cannot give us.
Time to move on.
Take care.

Stable ROM
Hello the most stable ROM was RC4.2 with semaphore 1.1.1
Now I am on RC5 from Team Nyx. It's stable. The only thing that doesn't work is YouTube. Flashing another kernel from Devil (2_0.94) will help.

Hi.
Can you please stop posting these opinions as facts, when the "problems" can easily be fixed. This is a development forum, at least it used to be, and you cannot expect everything to work right out of the box like official stock firmware (even though it does most of the time). It's not like you've been scammed by a car salesman selling you a car without an engine.
No offense intended, but please stop it.

My apologies.
U r correct . In fact, perhaps I might go back to ICS again cause in reality, Gingerbread is not user friendly....there I go again...

Rom: Elite RC v1.3
Kernel: midnight 202L
Launcher: Apex Launcher with sense4.0 dock
Theme:Sense 4.0 for EliteRom
I can highly recommend ICS333 2.0.1 with Semaphore kernel. Perfectly stable, not one reboot so far. It's fast, simple and works well in every way.
It's all just opinions, try them out

Everybody has his own taste, some people like AOSP, some people like AOKP, some people like CM9 while some people like slim ROM regardless with few bugs ... also there are people here in this forum (like you) who install ROMs incorrectly n find it **** (yes i am pointing to Team Nyx's ROM). When you have tried some of the ROMs, why don't you try all of the ROMs?
p.s. Team Nyx's AOSP is the only ICS ROM I found stable and less battery consuming after slim, this is only my point of view.

I noticed a significant increase in the speed of the OS when I switched from CM 7.2 to ICS & JB. Most JB Roms still have a few bugs, but if you like cyanogenmod, SpazeDog ICS is based off CM9, is fast, and pretty stable.
If you would like to try an ICS update but are unsure how, I wrote an update tutorial that has all the links for everything you will need in it here.
Hope this helps.
I know how it feels on cm7.2 it was so laggy especially using browser. ICS is more stable than jelly bean, but my phone using jb is faster than ICS. If you don't need camera I would recommend upgrading to jb.
Its very easy to install ICS/jb. Do a search on black rose and learn how to partition you system.

The roms are both good, just different - its a matter of personal preference. You should try them both and see which you like better. I prefer spazedog because it is more like CM which I have used for a long time. Also, I like the disk manager (spazedog version of app2sd script) as it is totally automatic - it moves apps to your ext partition in the background... you never have to mess with moving stuff around manually or running a script.
I do not know of a fix for the video recording issue.

NO, it's not perfectly stable, because it's an ALPHA release, however most of us use it as a daily ROM. One or two random reboots in one month, some minor freezes - I think it's worth it, the performance is outstanding, especially with some 3.x.x. kernels. Anyway, wait for RC version, if you want stock rom - like stability.
You could also try one of the CM9 releases. They've been around longer and are probably more stable than the CM10 ones.
I'm using arco's release (can be found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650615) which has only very few quirks left. The only ones I run into sometimes are a problem with the compass (something strange is going on with the magnetic field sensor) and GMail / Facebook occasionally display only a white screen (which can be fixed by killing and restarting the app) (which can be mapped onto long-pressing the back button).
There's also ivendor's release, which has some other fixes but hasn't been updated for quite some time. There's also a number of remixes, an AOSP release by broodplank, AOKP, and MIUI.
Basicly, there's a list here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901212
The JB's are bound to have some bugs, don't flash them if you don't plan on updating as well. ICS is probably rather stable and most GB releases are probably stable as well.
Fastest: probably AOSP (so brood's release) and JB (project butter and all)
Most battery-friendly: GB
Stable: anything but JB

It really depends what you want - for ICS probably Texasice, Sense 3 - Runny Rom for N1, etc.
Stock android usually is quicker (something like CM but if you want a different look there're always themes)

I'm using the [ROM][DEV][JB][4.2.2] AOKP for Passion Unofficial Nightlies
even donated to the developer, impressive.
can even be patched using autopatcher to support pdroid,
The GB ROMS such as CM 7.2, MIUI 2.3.30 are very smooth and stable. MIUI especially offers a degree of customization not seen in most other ROMs. However, my only problem with these ROMs is the slow Write speed they've got - copying files to the SD card is a drag even if you have a class 10.
The JB ROMs (esp. 4.2.1 VJ) are very smooth and almost stable ( Camcorder, Tethering, Faulty 3G), but they kernel is optimized for faster transfers. If you can live with the niggles I mentioned, JB ROMs are the way to go.
Hi everyone,
I recently installed android on my friend's Touch Pad. Which ROM do you recommend as the most stable/usable ROM? (While being new and hopefully rather current as - like Android 4.1 or 4.2). My friend is definitely not familiar with flashing or anything like that, but she knows how to use android. As I will be moving out of the state at the end of this week, I want to leave her with a good ROM that will be nice and stable and easy for her to use. What do you all suggest? Thanks!
Tough one just have to flash them all and test I would go for cm10 night lies because they'll constantly update it and all you have to do is go into settings and update it.

Thanks, I'm trying a couple. I had a 4.2.2 mashup of CM, AOKP, and PA. It was a bit buggy, and probably too confusing for my friend. She does really like the PIE controls though so I'm trying to get a stable one with those. If not I'll just go for the CM10 nightlies probably. Thank you sir!
for me, the most stable roms are the standard CM9 nightlies.
they benchmark higher than any of the 4.2.2 builds, and has working bluetooth and no UI issues as noted on the CM10 and CM10.1 builds.
every few weeks I backup my HP touchpad and install some of the latest roms and always come back to CM9. it just works better, and best of all, it has a better UI (while the tablet UI mod helps with CM10 and 10.1, it does not fix all of the issues. and for CM10.1 there is no 120dpi so you are stuck with everything being oversized for the screen
while with cm9 all you need is the CWM flashable 120dpi patch which still works with the latest nightly builds and takes care of any market place issues.
Overall for everyday use, CM9 is still the way to go.
I attached the 120dpi patch that I use. It only works on CM9

If you are on CM10 and the 120dpi is too small, to undo it flash the 160dpi file
the CWM dpi patches are the only ones that have worked for me, I have tried android 4.1 and 4.2 and the only recommendations for adjusting the dpi is using apps from the market place and all of the recommended ones for me have not worked, most causes the rom to not boot fully.
The main thing holding me back from going to anything higher than CM9, is the lack of stable bluetooth support, the new android 4.1+ UI that is just a more screen space wasting version of the cellphone UI (not tablet optimized at all), and the issue with no 120DPI mod working with it.
Have been using CM9 for a long time with no complaints other than battery life. I think there may be some kernels that are better, but I like when the battery runs out and my kids have to put it down. A timer of sorts. I have not found a combination that can compare to WebOS for battery life. But, Android has all the latest stuff now for the kids, so, Android it is. I still use WebOS, though, when I can.
CM10.1 nightlies by milaq have been very stable for me. I experienced random crashing of the default browser in CM9 nightlies but none in CM10.1.
Obviously the missing Bluetooth in CM10.1 may be an issue for some but I haven't really used BT for anything.
