Is it possible to unlock network for free? Or do i need to pay 20$?

Just a quick question...I just sold my milestone and I have it rooted but does that also mean its unlocked? If not, does anyone know of a online place that will unlock or a way to do it? The buyer is on a different network so I have to do it.

Rooting does not unlock a phone.
You need what is called a subsidy unlock code. This unlocks it for use on other networks. When you insert a SIM from a different network, it will prompt you for a code.
I have had very good success with gsmliberty for unlock codes on many phones. I dont know about customer service because always got my codes a few hours after paying around 10 bucks.

only your operator can give you free unlock... for everything else, you must pay... no free unlocking

So I have Nokia Lumia 520 in my drawer for a year now and decided to do something with it maybe use it for something or sell it because phone is new. But the problem is that it is locked on O2 network UK. Since its been some time from its release maybe there is a ways of unlocking it for free? If no then maybe can someone offer good and cheap service where can I buy the unlock code.

you can not unlock using C:/DPP/NOKIA/simlock due file encryption.... For now there is no public solution for sim unlocking

If you want to pay for unlocking , I do not recommend internet... maybe you should go to a local phone service to get unlocked.
Or why not just ask your mobile operator for unlocking? After some time, some mobile operators do unlock phone for free if they are requested

Thing is I bought this phone in the UK then I moved to other country.
So not sure that can I still get unlock code from O2 since the phone is not even in the UK.
I'd like to save 30 bucks if I can sim unlock my phone myself, and if wifi tethering won't turn on I'll need to root it anyway. Trying to use it on cricket.

From what I've read rooting doesn't do it. However there's someone on XDA that'll do a remote usb SIM unlock for free if you have rooted your device. I paid $20 to have mine unlocked — let's unlock and at&t unlock codes were the two cheapest and honest I found when trying to get mine unlock, just fyi.
