Note 2 Defender Holster Mod to make it a car holder! - Galaxy Note II Accessories

Hi there...
Took delivery of the Defender for my Note 2 last week. One thing I forgot about when selecting the case was the car mount issue. I dont like generic ones where you have to close jaws on the device etc.
So, knowing I wont use the belt clip (it looks like a laptop on your belt) it made sense to use this in some way.
I am a huge fan of the Brodit system of pro-clips (clips that attach to your car and offer a base to mount device specific holders onto) and the associated device holders.
I already had 2 adjustable holders that I used for an iPhone with a case on and what they call the 'move clip'
Move clip: MoveClip*MoveClip Mini. 2 female + 1 male. 50 x 35 x 4 mm.*213005*|*Brodit
iPhone Adjustable holder with Tilt/Swivel: Passive holder with tilt swivel*Adjustable holder. Fits devices with skin (NOT for Apple original Bumper).*Apple*iPhone 4S*511165*|*Brodit
So, what i did, was to use a dremel and take off the clip part of the otterbox case. I realised after there was no need to be so forcefull. Under the clip are two prongs that with the right tool could be compressed and the belt clip would detach from the other half.
Once this was removed there is a raised area on the back that I sanded down using a dremel and a small sander.
When this was quite flat, I used epoxy resin to glue on part of the move clip.

I took the tilt/swivel part of the iphone holder off. Its in two peices, its basically a ball and socket. The moveable ball stays on the proclip. The other part, I glued the other side of the moveclip onto and drilled a hole through it so I can attach it back to the ball side.

This means that my new Defender mount slides on using the 'move clip'

As I will also use the D3O impact case and need a car holder for that, I modified my second iPhone holder.
The iPhone holder is adjusted in width with the thumbscrews at the back of the holder. Thats no good now as I need to put the move clip there. So used the back plate of the first holder with the back plate of the second one to clamp the adjustable sides together and aim to have the thumbscrews at the front. This means I can glue the move clip to the back in a similar fashion to the Otterbox holder.

So, in a matter of seconds I can swap the phone holder, dependant on what case im using
As the case is quite a tight fit in the holder, I used a heat gun on the section that holds the phone in and bent it ever so slightly so its easy to remove yet grasps it enough to keep it secure in the car.
I had to make a small cut out at the bottom of the otterbox holder so its easier to pull out the rubber port cover for the charger:

Here it is in use:

Car mount for phone with silicon case

Are there any mounts out there that can hold my phone with the standard verzion silicon cover attached? I am looking for a compact car mount like the standard car mount that has the attachment similar to the holster attachment where it just snaps in. I do not want the kind that grips the phone on the sides. I also do not want to have to modify my phone in any way.
Thanks

Having the silicon cover on the phone pretty much precludes using any snap-in holder. If for no other reason that the silicon does not snap.
Further ruling out a mount that would grip the phone would leave only one alternative: a custom mount that the phone would slip into.
That is talking about a mount custom made for the DINC.
No such thing on the market.
Not enough profit margin, unless you would be willing to pay an awful lot of money (enough for the manufacturer to recoup development and production costs) for it.
Your answer is the Soundgate M2 car mount. Very minimalistic in the car and all you do is stick a thin disc on the back of any case or phone directly. Google it. Sticky doesn't ruin your car either. I had it on an BMW M5 attached to the leather dash and it came off clean. Solid too performance on bumpy roads too.

Yes I heard of that, and actually saw some photos of it on here. however I didnt want to have to glue something to my phone. especially since it has to keep going in my pocket. I suppose it depends just how thin it is. maybe its worth another look.
If I recall, the disc is metal and it is held on with a magnet? I wonder if I could stick the disc on the other side of my case so the back would be smooth
I had a Droid 1 and bought a SlipGrip OtterBox Car Holder. Search Ebay for it.
I now have an incredible with a seidio active case and it fits perfect. only this is you have to trim the bottom right piece to allow for the charger to plug in. It looks oem to me and much better than those "one size fits all" Car Mounts.

free DIY car mount, kickstand

Car mount: Take an empty CD spindle, run the phone's bottom edge through two adjacent grooves in the circular base, and secure the phone's top edge by attaching a large paper clamp to the spindle (using the spindle's included foam donut as padding). Then duct tape the spindle base to your dashboard. Without the duct tape and clamp, this also makes an excellent desk stand. Portrait or landscape orientation, phones or tablets, for the desk stand; landscape only, phones only, for the car mount.
Kickstand: Tape the top edges of two plastic cards together, and connect the bottom edges with a strip of tape several centimeters long. Attach a roll of tape in front as a stop. Folds together for pocket or wallet. Portrait or landscape orientation for phones and tablets.

Creative, ugly, but creative. I like the idea of the credit card one. It would be nice to carry in my wallet until I need it.
Nice! Recycle and Save The Earth Too!!
The grooves in the CD/DVD spindles holds the Note II perfectly in landscape orientation!

Re the red wire stand, just use heavy-duty pliers to bend it to shape. Sand it using abrasive papers. Then apply paint.
As to the otg usb cable, I hate the dangling cable so I used rubber glue or epoxy to stick the head to the tail.
Hope that helps.

I made my own belt clip pouch!

I have been looking online for a vertical pouch style holster for a while.
I found one I think might work but it's 39.99 and I hate waiting for shipping...
Every time I'm out I check for any type of anything that I might be able to shove this thing in! Drives my family crazy I'm sure.
Last night I was in hhgregg (a store I never go to) and I found this Garmin pouch that fits the gn2 perfectly!
I also have a flip cover, modded cruzerlite tpu case and a flygrip on the phone.
The pouch was just that. No clip or anything.
Tonight, I was about to go out to get lunch/dinner and hunt for some sort of belt clip that I could try to attach to the pouch. I looked down and saw a metal clip that came off one of our garage door openers..
OMG I had it all along!
The clip is optional so it slides off the opener. It also happens to have 3 holes in the back of it. Perfect for sewing!
Ok dinner would have to wait.
I got out some black thread and a needle and proceeded to sew the clip to the pouch.
I also mashed the clip down a bit with pliers because I think it's made wider to be able to clip to a car sun visor.
It's not perfect because it sags just a little. The pouch looks like neoprene but it's actually fabric covering some sort of thin foam so it's not quite as firm as neoprene. BUT....
It is very low profile and will definitely work for now! I can't believe I will finally have something to hold my phone in where I can actually get to it without digging through my purse.
I figured I'd share this in case someone else might be interested!
Ok It's time to eat now! I'm starving!

Large Holster for Note 2 with Case such as Seidio ACTIVE (and also a car mount)

If anyone is interested in a Large Case to carry the Note 2 if you have a case on it such as Seidio ACTIVE with Metal Kickstand i got this one...
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Note II Horizontal Leather Case with Magnetic closure with belt clip and belt loops (Plus Size will Fit w/ Otterbox Commuter on) + Cell Phone Antenna Booster
(link Belwo)
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Horizontal-Magnetic-Otterbox-Commuter/dp/B00AMOAW4S/ref=pd_cp_cps_2
When i got it a few weeks ago...it was $13.50 now it is $8 LOL. I have the Seidio ACTIVE with Metal Kickstand white
http://www.seidioonline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=CSK3SSGT2K-GL
and it fits it almost 100% perfectly. There is a tiny bit of play (up/down....& side to side), but not much. It seems to fit better now that it has been broken in. And yes our phone is big so yes this is a big Horizontal Leather Case...but you get used to carrying it.
Although the pictures online make it look more like a grey leather, it is black. You can not see it in the pics online...but on the sides....a part of it has small strip of elastic. It "may" work for the extended case that comes with the 4500mAh extended battery. You could technically use this holster without a case on your Note 2...which i did for about 3 days before i got my case....but it will flop around a bit.
There are other reviewers on Amazon that say it fits with the Ottterbox Commuter and it is in the tile.
For those of you who want to mount it in the car...i suggest this. (see link below) i got the SM 678. and the legs are adjustable side to side. (I have wide for by the USB jack and close together for the top of the phone, so as not to cover the headphone jack.) And one side is movable with a fairly strong spring type mechanism to adjust for height... (which you can see in the videos...via Youtube...not my videos...).

I live i South Florida and i always buy from Arkon... for all my phones. But being in S. Fl. the heat is brutal... especially inside your car. I used to have windshield mounts and then bought a "friction dash mount"....and the heat would make the suction cups lose suction and it would fall. The last straw for me was when i was using the Nav on my Nexus 1 and it fell.
So I decided to glue it to the part where you suction cup it to the dash mount... using Gorilla glue. It worked like a charm. Since the parts are interchangeable on the Arkon products it was not a big deal going from a bigger mount for each larger phone (LG G2x was next). The reason why i am telling you this, is that this new version will stick to any part of a flat surface on your dashboard (yes of course glass too). If there is any "texture " on your dash should hold as long as it is a plain (mostly flat) or completely flat. You need to pick a 100% or perhaps 90% (as in "very slightly" curved) flat surface. I do not know what new tech they are using, but it is better than an ordinary suction cup. Some parts on the inside of the cup has a tiny techture / ridges to it, compared to a completely flat surface like your average suction cup. I am sure other company's have this tech too. I think it is modeled after the Geckos feet. You have to look really close at it to see it.
Anyway... it has yet to fall. We are heading into summer soon...so we will see how it holds up. We have not hit the high 90's yet or at least i do not think so) If it craps out on me later, i will try an remember to post.
--> EDIT( 04-27-2013) ok the heat got to it. When i would come out to my car it would be laying on the floor. If you remove it before you leave the car, most likely not an issue. But I do not want to reset the view etc every time. So back to the dash mount where i have a suction cup glued to it with Gorilla glue.
I hope this helps....

Magnetic phone holder for car vent

I'm searching for a magnetic phone holder which you can mount into the air vent of a car. Tried a few but the magnets are not strong enough to hold the phone.
Any advise, preferably based on experience.
Grab a thin metal plate adhesive from the one side, and stick it on the back of the phone or just place it inside a hard TPU case (between the case and the back of the phone), and it will be held like magic.
The plate must be large enough to hold it properly.
Some magnetic holders in the market include such metal plates.
I recommend Magnetic holder brand Baseus
It sticks very well even on rough road. Been using it for a month and never once it fall off.
Bought it for around $5
Premium build quality and also it comes with nice metal plate wrapped with leather.
Worth every cents.
