External Hard Drives and Media Format Help - Nexus 10 Accessories

Anyone out there use external hard drives with their Nexus 10? What format do the files need to be in order for Nexus Media Reader to read the media files? (NTFS or FAT32?) Does it actually matter what format since the tablet isn't downloading the file onto the tablet but rather just playing media off of it.
Also what format does Nexus Media play? I could probably look it up but let me know if you happen to know.

I got myself a cheap 2 dollar OTG cable and I use a WD 2TB Passport drive. I have the drive formatted NTFS and the N10 reads everything just fine through Nexus Media Importer. Flash drives work just fine without an outside power source, however, with a USB powered External, you will need to use a powered USB hub... I use MX Player for video, and it will play any file type, WMV, mkv, you name it. There are more capabilities you can utilize if you are rooted (so I've heard), but I'm leaving this stock.

Question regarding .mkv

hello I just bought captivate three days ago and yet haven't figure out lots of it yet.
I love this device, but only problem that I got now is that it plays regular .mkv video files without converting it but I can't skip or fastforward it. I tried to dl some other video programs, but that wasn't helpful.
and you know you can't just finish the 3 hours of movie at once.
If someone knows how to fix this plz tell me
thx
let me throw an mkv on my phone and test it!
I played it through the stock player, and all I did was tap the screen and I was able to move the seekbar. My guess is that you have a broken MKV file.
I tried 3 different movies.
Pirates.of.the.Caribbean.3.2007.Bluray.x264.720p.AC3-WAF 4.5gb
King.Kong.2005.720p.HDDVD.x264-BKL 8gb
You might want to try RockPlayer but you have to side load it to use the ARMV7 version.
http://www.anplayer.com/index_en.html
It could be the format of the movie. I've got some ctrlHD movies that are working.
yea i tried rock player, but it didn't work

If you play your MKVs on your computer using vlc, can you seek? And most likely this is going to be moved to the general or app thread once a mod sees it.
but isn't it kind a weird? I can skip and fastfoward w.e i want to do with on my comp, but not on galaxy when it plays flawless

VLC will only temporarly repair broken movies. I think it prompts you when it does.
I have my Blu-Ray backup of avatar on my device and it seek works.
I had to split my movies into 4gb chunks bc of FAT limitations. Are you running a different file system? How did you get an 8gb file on your phone?

Oh I didn't know I have to split, and yea it didn't work when I tried to put them on with samsung kies. so I just put them with regular method just by putting directly into the folder. I will try to split the movie and try again maybe that was why it won't work properly. what kind of program do you use to split the blu ray movie though? mine takes forever to do that
alright I just split my videos with mkvmerge with less than 3 gb which works fine on my computer and run with vlc before I put on my phone. Somehow, movie doesn't even play at all.

I didn't even think about it being too large. What filesystem are you running? FAT32 can not handle a file larger than 4gb. If you are streaming from your PC it would cause seek issues.
1) wrong place
2) Format/container/encoding/size
just because it's an MKV does not mean with will work the same as there may be any number of differences in the stack of details that make up the file.
(! Personally, and forum wise, I say rip your own legally owned copies !)
Let me ask a dumb question, do you have the screen locked? Pressing the power button when playing video locks the screen.
I may be under-thinking it but I fear people are over-thinking it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
HAHAH No that's not the case here.
I just won't be able to seek the movie if I put mkv files in it

By videos do you mean movies? If that's what you're doing then I use DVD Decrypter to rip them to my laptop then AutoGK to convert them to XviD. I just leave all settings default and set the size to 1CD (700MB). The movies play fine and it's not like it's taking up too much storage space.
I play .avi due to its file size.
Otherwise I don't miss itunes except for pod casts.
Now I can put what media I want on my sdcard and don't worry about it.
You get used to it.

Drag and drop is the perfect way to put anything on any device.
The fact that people want junk programs (especially one like iTunes, which loads a chunk of it's bloated self at startup and slows your computer down) is mind boggling.

Try isyncr. It doesn't require a program on your computer and will sync play-counts and ratings back and forth. I really missed iTunes myself and this helped with the transition.

Put me down as another iSyncr supporter. I like using iTunes to manage my music library, but not lock down my device.
In handbrake, I've had good success with using the default iPhone preset, but changing the horizontal resolution to match the source video (up to 800). A high quality 2hour movie runs about a gig that way. Medium quality is about 400mb.

I don't think he means streaming. He is renting them from Netflix, converting them on a PC, and then transferring them to the tablet. I don't know of a reliable way to watch streaming movies from places like Netflix but I have heard Netflix is working on it. I can stream things from my PC using an app called upnplay, and some people use Orb, or others. But they pretty much all are using the movies on your PC.

Wow.. You didn't get that from the discussion above
1. No
2. No. Unless you mean to have them sent to your house.
3. Yes. will need to convert them to a format playable by the tablet. Can copy them to an external sdcard, or to the internal sdcard, USB thumbdrive, or even an external hard drive.
As said above the way most do it is to convert a DVD, or your movie file and then copy it on to your tablet. I'm sure there are companies out there looking at ways to do what you ask but not yet. Android is like the wild west of operating systems in a lot of companies minds. Because it is open source they act like everyone will steal everything they put out. Unlike the Ipad that is locked tighter than a drum..

I think anything you try to do with Itunes is going to cause you problems. The movie will likely have DRM. That is copy protection. I don't know how to convert that, it likely will not play on your tablet because you don't have a player from Apple to decode it on the tablet.
Only thing right now I know of that works reliably is to use a DVD, or a movie file without DRM and convert it. I know there are ways to watch from sites like Hulu, or TV.com but I don't find them to be really reliable yet. Usable, yes. Reliable with no issues, no.
I know it is not what you wanted to hear but this stuff is all brand new and will get better. Just not yet..

Yes, I have a 69 Charger. Have had it since 1992.
Anyway, if you are trying to play the itunes movie that's likely the DRM keeping it from playing. Rockplayer is my favorite player. Some people have success with MKV, others don't. I haven't messed with it enough to know. I just convert everything to MP4 in Handbrake and it plays good enough for me.
Videos from iTunes won't play even if converted in handbrake. You have to use something like tunebite which is supposedly a legal way around drm if you bought the file.
There are tons of sites dedicated to file conversion from any source to playback on portable devices/memory cards. I highly suggest googling for them to find more detailed information and people who are more specialized.
I4iphones
i use i4iphones i used it on my jailbroken ipodtouch in app form and as long as the movies have a megaupload box you can download or stream them on the g tablet
Seems like an expensive way to do it.
Renting an individual movie via blockbuster/itunes=3.99 a movie. (or at least thats what blockbuster charges when i use my samsung blu-ray players app).
Netflix 1 at a time. unlimited netflix viewing at home plus 1 movie at a time for $9.99 a month unlimited.
I can get 2 a week for that, pop them in my pc, Encode them and send to the tablet via usb cable. Figure, just over $1 each for each movie at that rate, (not counting the net flix streams i get to my blu ray player and iphone).

WD My Cloud and chromecast

Hello
How can I stream videos/TV shows from a WD My Cloud to my chromecast ?
Open the cloud drive on a desktop computer. Select the Shared folder you want to access... right click on it and then choose Map to Drive. This will give it a location on the laptop that anything that can access its file system can see.
Next, get a Plex account, download the Plex Media Server, and connect it to your account online (it is free with a few small limitations). Specifically, you will be asked to provide different folders for where your media is.... this is where you choose the drive that you mapped your WD cloud to.
From there, you can log in to Plex.tv and Cast your movies.
So to recap, they go from your Cloud drive to your laptop which is read by Plex and showed on their website despite being locally read by Plex Server from that hard drive letter which maps to that virtual drive, and then Plex servers get permission from Google servers to put up an https url on your Chromecast which is told by plex.tv to load a url from your local server which transcodes the file you want to see.

All you need is any DLNA and CCast capable player app.
WD Cloud has a DLNA server built in.
Not sure what they are using these days but they used to run Twonky Server on their NAS units so you can start there.
But most DLNA servers on a NAS do not transcode due to lack of power so you might want to look into what @primetechv2 said and have a PC run either Plex or BubbleuPnP server so you never have to worry if your files are CCast compatible.

I have a WD My Book LIve and I use AVIA app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.videon.android.mediaplayer) to stream directly, using Nexus 10, to my chromecast without having to use PC. It can see all the folders on my drive that I have shared over my network.
Only other thing I had to do was upgrade Twonky software to newer version as version 5 that came on drive was out of date and wouldn't play .mp4 files. Instructions I got to do this was here
http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/foru...to-upgrade-to-twonky-7-version-my-book-live-o
I'm not sure exactly what software will be on your newer model drive but if you have Twonky 7 or other similar software this should work for you. Perhaps try the Avia app first and see if it works before changing anything on your drive.

Just going to point out that you need to purchase a new license for Twonky 7 to do the above mentioned upgrade from Twonky 5.
If your unit already comes with Twonky 7 then no need to upgrade is likely needed. But even if it is your OEM License should work.
Ok so I hesitated between WD MyCloud and a synology NAS
I think it will be better if I use DS Video on a Synology beetween DLNA,
I already try DLNA (before I have a chromecast) with my usb port on my router and my TV and It didn't works great a lot of video didn't work so I think it will be the same if I use mycloud in DLNA

It really depends on what DLNA server you are running as they are not all equal.
The reason some files work and others don't is due to container (mp4, mkv, avi) and Codec (H.264, Cinepack, MPEG-4, MJPEG) incompatibilities of the player application or device.
You either need to manually re-encode the incompatible files to a format that is compatible with all your devices and players (Usualt H.264 with AAC Audio) or use a DLNA Server that can Transcode the video on the fly to a compatible format for your target device.
Twonky 7 does the latter when run on a proper computer but may not be available and disabled in a low processing power device such as the WD My Cloud drives.
Plex also does this but again it is probably not available for your unit since it ships with Twonky instead. And again you have the same issue with transcode is not supported on some units due to a lack of power to transcode....
My suggestion is to figure out what files you are having problems playing, and what seems to work well. Re-Encode the non working files to MP4/H.264/AAC (or MKV/H.264/AAC if you can play this container type) in Handbrake (computer required) so that all of your library is compatible without the need to transcode.
You will probably also save yourself some space on the drive in the process and all your files will pretty much play on any device.
ok but I really don't want to have to re encode/ convert my incompotible videos. It takes time and I have to do it manually (I think)

I understand but you have to realize that the CCast doesn't play some containers or codecs and the only way to get them to work is to either run a server that does the transcoding when needed or to do it manually.
ok so if I understand I have to buy a synology with for exemple a plex server to let it transcode my video automatically. I can't do this with a WD MyCloud
If I buy a MyCloud I will have to re encode my video manually if it doesn't works
that's it ?

You probably can't do it with a synology either....It depends on the power of the unit you buy...
Most NAS units do not have a processor capable of transcoding. Only the high end units do.
And plex will disable transcode on units that they feel are underpowered.
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200375666-Stand-Alone-Server
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/sections/200286217
Here is a spreadsheet that tells you what is supported by Plex on the various NAS units available.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...5-Ac4oOLPRtCkgUxU0jdj3tmMPc/htmlview?sle=true
But I'll tell you right now...The NAS units that do support transcode are all going to cost upwards of $1K US
So it really comes down to what do you think is worth to you?
Buying a unit that will do the work for you or doing the work once and be able to use those files on any NAS device you can afford?
There are Programs you can get that will do batch conversion for you as well.
Anyone willing to try this... Plex running fine on MyCloud independent of PC / laptop

Well it seems like Nexus 6 doesn't support FLAC or lossless files at all.
Like the hardware doesn't come with special coding for lossless support.
Also i couldn't find any player that got built in encoding for flac.
There is PlayerPro and PowerAmp, while they do support flac, but only if the phone supports it from hardware, they dont have built in encoding as they will not find installed flac files. What do i do? anyone help me please :/

LOL not true at all. I run flac on my Nexus 6 every single day. Sometimes multiple times in one day! I do have Poweramp. You need to verify your input. I mean we all are told stuff, and we all need to verify what we're told. Even you.

Oh well i found the problem, well i was sure i transfered .flac file, beacause i downloaded full flac album but this specific file was m3u which is not supported and was able to transfer, i still get this weird problem when trying to transfer .flac files.
i used bittorrent sync, and transfered this way, it works now.
The link you guys gave me to fix the weird flac transfering problem via cable is.. well a link to halloween costumes? Lol
See attached
I told you the link was wrong. Yeah, you really need to improve your cognitive abilities.

are you trying to sync with windows media player? or are you dragging and dropping the files?
I've been able to drag and drop flac files no problem. There's an error that says the file may not be supported, but I click copy anyway. Files play just fine on the phone with Gone Mad.
