I'm assuming quite a few people are going the VoIP route with the $30/mo T-Mobile plan, so I thought we might be able to compile experiences with GrooveIP thus far on this phone. I know there's many other VoIP options, but GrooveIP is very popular due to its great native dialer integration and easy setup, so I'm assuming there will be quite a few of us using it.
My experience so far, even with the default settings, is that this app works much better on the Nexus 4 then it did on the Galaxy Nexus. I assume that the superior WiFi chip and better CPU are partially to thank.
My main concerns thus far here:
Call delays / latency
Echoing
The first doesn't seem to be a problem like it was on the Galaxy Nexus, but time will tell. I often had a 2-3 second delay on my calls with that phone on GrooveIP, rendering it nearly impossible to use.
Echo does seem to be a very large issue for this phone due to its loud speaker. The echo cancellation methods work for me, but they tend to cut off the end of a sentence while you're talking as a result, so I don't consider it a good solution.
So far, these audio settings have yielded me the best (so least) echo returns:
Speaker volume: -4
Mic gain: -6
For anyone who doesn't know, calling this phone number and talking to yourself to listen for an echo is a great way to test these settings out: 909-390-0003
Anyway, for anyone else using this app - what has worked best for you thus far? If we can compile a good starting point for this phone, I'll try to keep the OP updated. Or this thread will fall off into the abyss. That'd work too
One bump attempt!
Reserved.
Mine seems to sound quite good! The echo canceling gets a little overzealous with that phone number you posted!
Mic gain 0
Speaker 0
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
0 for the mic gain?! Have you had anyone complain about background noise or anything? I've bumped mine up to -6 after a few people have complained about me being too quiet, but 0 seems like it'd be overkill and start hearing every little thing.
I wonder what's better, this or Talkatone ...
Having used both, I have to vote for GrooveIP. Talkatone works, but it is ugly and not well integrated in to Android. It doesn't FEEL like it "just works", to me anyway.
Interesting discussion.
Please keep in mind that the call quality may seem good from N4 but the quality on the other end for the same call could be totally garbage. You need someone actually giving you live feedback when fine tuning the call settings.
I have not tried grooveip yet on my nexus 4 but will do rep port back. But Wasn't there a thread in gnex page with a way to reduce latency greatly improving performance? I will find and link it later.
We may be able to port it/use it straight up.

That latency issue doesn't seem to exist on the Nexus 4. It was a flaw inherent to just the Galaxy Nexus.
Thanks for the test number and this thread. I was testing my nexus 4 by removing my landline from Google Voice and then using it to call my Google Voice number and answering with both Groove IP and Talkatone but that required trying to find time for both my wife and I to be tied up for testing. With the test number it will be easier to try and get a close setup and then we can try the landline test.
I have been having quite bad connections with Groove IP and with the settings you mentioned I can't hear anything on the test number and all the settings I have tried have been very unsatisfactory so far.
Evidently there is a limit to how many times you can call that number. I tried 4-5 times and then it quit answering so I figure I'll wait a bit and try again. Anyone else run into this?
Weird, I called it several times with no problem.
I had to up my mic gain quite a bit recently from someone telling me it was too quiet. It doesn't seem consistent. I'll update the OP.
my settings
I tried different settings on Groove-ip for my Nexus 4; checked for echoes on 909-390-0003.
Following ones gave me best results:
Adaptive Echo canceler
Post processing
Echo tail: Auto detect
Microphone gain, Speaker volume, everything else: default. Did not change those
Let me know if these settings worked for anyone
I ended up with
speaker gain -6
Mic gain -4
audio processing on
Had a test call with my dad, he said "sounds like you are on a land-line"
Echo canceling caused my voice to cut out too much at the end of a sentence
Same query
Bump for more responses. I am trying to identify the best GrooveIP settings for my Nexus 4 as well. There are many settings that I have no clue of, I would like someone more knowledgeable to share their wisdom.

Out of all the suggestions on this thread and other threads on the Internet, I found this to work great! No echo. No choppy or delayed sound. The Basic Echo Canceler was also causing me problems with sentences/words being cut out.
I was able to increase my speaker to -4 and mic gain to -3, and still no echo. I was just about to give up and drop my T-Mobile $30/month plan for a $45/$50 plan. I hope this continues to work. Thank you!
Speaker gain at -6 makes incoming voice sound too low on my N4. Is everyone else OK with theirs?
Grooveip and Talkatone don't work on Nexus 4
Hey Guys,
I bought a Nexus 4 unlocked from T-mobile due to it's scarcity from Google. On my former Android phones these apps worked like a charm, but now no more.
When I make a call, the line just keeps ringing till the app kills the call. Also when I have a call coming in, if I answer it, I don't hear a sound and the person on the other line doesn't hear one either.
I have tried searching for an answer for 2 weeks now. I was thinking maybe some settings will fix this. I even tried changing the voice channel. Hope someone has a suggestion.
Thanks.
Sounds like you have a bad connection. Have you tried both Wi-Fi and T-Mobile's network? There aren't many settings to fiddle within Groove IP. If you have, reset those and try again from the beginning.
Did that

Getting bluetooth to work properly on Nexus 4 in Groove IP
Has anyone discovered the best settings for Bluetooth operation in Groove IP for the Nexus 4? I haven't gone through the various troubleshooting settings in Groove IP yet, but was hoping someone has gotten Bluetooth to work smoothly. Specifically, I use the Bluetooth connection between the Nexus 4 and my Kenwood car stereo which has its own mic. I haven't done enough testing to give any accurate details of my experience yet, but I'll post those if no one has it figured out already. Thanks!

Hello All,
I am running Dutty's Dual Touch v1.1 Rom with radio 1.27.12.17 on my ATT Tilt. The device is brand new, 6 days old now. Whenever I make a phone call, I can hear the other person perfectly. However I have consistently heard complaints from the person on the other end of the line. They complain that they can't hear me, saying I sound muffled or far away. In some cases they can't hear me at all, and I would have to call the other person back. Sometimes they can hear me perfectly, and sometimes they cant. I'd say its 50/50, good and bad. What could be the problem?
Thanks,
thehin
I have similar problem. Sometimes people just can't hear me well, but I always can hear everyone perfectly. During the normal call it happens not very often, but the loudspeaker is almost unusable, in most cases none can here what I speak.
I have a good GSM coverage in my area, my old Nokia 6680 produced a good call quality.
I have standard ROM 1.56.405.5 (08/28/07), Radio: 1.27.12.11
I think, it is probably something in the Kaiser's hardware, because I’ve heard about similar problems from different people with totally different ROMs and radios.
Big Problem
This is a huge problem for me, it's somewhat embarrassing when people can't hear you, and you are forced to call back or call from another phone. I have full service, and have no problems with data connections. Could it be due to a constant connection????
Is your data connection active when you're on the phone? If so, try turning them off and then making calls. I think I read somewhere (or made up in my head) that the 3G connection messes with your call connection.
I expiernece the problem in both scenarios. I turned off 3G through comm manager, and it still happens. I even disabled data all together and it still happened. :-(!!!

I think it is nothing to do with the data connection, mine is mostly off, but the problem remains. Theres some cases the sound just floating, according to recipients and they just cant hear what I am saying.
If anyone DOES NOT experience the same problems, can you please be kind enough to share your ROM version, and radio version?
Thanks
Has nothing to do with ROM type. The Mic on the HTC8925 / Tilt / kaiser is located at bottom right-hand edge of the device. Although your voice sound travels through all of the bottom parts of the device, the most sensitive spot is the small hole next to the mini USB plug in. If you are holding the phone and covering the bottom part of the phone with your palm, then the person on the other side of the call will not hear you well.
To test, start HTC recorder or Resco Recorder program and while tapping on various areas of the phone surface observe the behavior of the decibel meter on the Recording program. You will then discover the most sound sensitive spot of your device.
I will give that a try. However the other night when I was talking to someone, they claimed they couldn't hear me at all, and I was coming in and out. I checked my reception, full service. No data connection, no bluetooth, no wifi, no 3G, no GPS, no apps running. I then held the phone out and talked directly into the mic, he still could not hear me. I held the phone a little farther away, still no go. One person said I sounded like i was whispering off a mountain peak.
ARGGHH :-( I love this phone, but this is pretty annoying.

LOL thats exactly how the Titan sounds through bluetooth, only it so happens to sound that way. on our side of the call.
Finally!
I'm so glad to find other people suffering the same problem.
I'm battling with Handtec & HTC to try and resolve this issue, it's driving me *and callers* mad.
I've been waiting 3 months for this to be resolved and Handtec have finally agreed to replace it... but if this is a common problem, a replacement isn't likely to resolve it. £440 is a lot of money for something you can only use 50% of the time.
I also has the same problem. People sometimes just told me that they hear nothing frommy side suddently for a few seconds.
The only way to "contain" it is using Bluetooth, this way so far I never found problem any more.
ROM: 1.56.708.3
Radio: 1.27.12.11
Well my At&t Tilt is stock, i mean i havent change any radio roms or what ever, and I have the same problem, sometimes people complaint they cant hearme, I know its very anoying, but on my case its not like a 50/50, its more 75/25 (25 they cant hear) this happend on the 2 o 3 first days I had the phone, After that or the people I call can hear me, or the problem persist and they dont tell me.
I see the microphone its on the bottom of the phone, I think its because of that, when people complain I simply put it on speaker and talk directly to the microphone (but I dont know if this works ) hehe
Good morning and Happy New Year
I have had the same problem but after upgrading to Dutty's Dual Touch v2 Rom and radio 1.27.12.32 the sound is excellent, tested it yesterday and both on speaker and off speaker is very clear. My advice if you do not want to move to Dutty's v2 then at least flash the Radio to .32
Good luck
I don't have the problem. I'm using a TyTN II version with stock ROM. Got it when it came out so a few months ago.
I have the same problem, and mine is stock standard. Also tried it with and woth out 3G, blue tooth ect ect ect ect same problem.
Any Advice Anyone.
On another site, the issue was discussed and some one suggested the issue was caused by a .dll file conflict that routs or attempts to rout calls to HTC recorder program. It was also suggested to remove any recording software from the device or disable its call recording in the settings and see what happens.
I have been trying to look for a solution for that problem, Finally I decided to let go and stop using the loudspeaker option
I am trying to research this on other related forums and will get back to you if I am lucky.....
I got the same problem, but the person on the other end of the line can't hear me, with or without the loudspeaker option!!
Has anybody found a fix for this?
Looks like a minor upgrade. There is a PPC version and a Smart phone version, not sure of the differences or which is best for the Touch Pro.
Hi,
It is a major upgrade since a new voice engine is included.
The on the touch pro you need to install the pocket pc version.

Does it fix the issue with the sound playing out of the back speaker instead of the front one?
My company just made skype standard platform for internet call. Just wonder if this PDA version ad free? I installed desktop version but hate the pop-ups and silly ad on top. Well, I knew I should not complain as I use it for free.
ok i have a question. if i install this skype on my phone and my friend in india installs skype on his phone as well are those calls free if we can call each other through skype? do u guys know if this skype can be used with bluetooth headset?
"00" = "+" to make calls
Maybe this is common knowledge, but it took me an hour to find answer, which I eventually found on skype forums. I've used skype on PC for couple years, but just installed it on Fuze.
Problem is, you have to dial numbers in international format. For USA, that means you dial a "+1" before the area code and number. Skype 2.5 softphone has no way to type a "+" symbol and you cannot set it up to do so automatically like Skype on PC. Also, it does not accept input from our phones keyboard.
So, I found on Skype forums if you type "00" it equals the "+" symbol. Maybe its common knoweldge, but it gave me a hell of a time. Hope it helps.

Hey guys, I tested this over an EVDO data connection and wifi with and without a headset (wired). The quality of voice call was acceptable in every circumstance on both ends. However, not sure if this is an issue with my wireless ISP, using the EVDO data (and this has never happened) my data connection was disconnected within a minute or 2 in 3 consecutive calls. I have never had a disconnect issue before, and I did not receive a standard call to my phone in that period of time. Again, I am not sure if this is Skype causing the issue, or an issue with my stock Bell Mobility ROM/ISP. My guess would be Bell.
has anyone tried to use this with bluetooth headset?

Keep this issue alive...
My guess is there is a registry setting or three to adjust related to the default audio gateway instructions for Skype output, but I had trouble locating them before flying overseas (and therefore, using a WIRED headset for every skype call). I will look again, but anyone who has this fix, or an idea about solving the problem, please weigh in.
If this can be taken care of, then the "Call using Skype" option in Contacts may actually make Skype on a mobile work like a true IP phone client and change my mind about leaving Skype running on my mobile al the time instead of forwarding incoming Skypes to my mobile number (and paying for the forwarding) in an effort to avoid every answered Skype call being on speakerphone by default.

There is no registry setting or such thing (also see the Skype forums for this issue) to achieve this. According to the developer(s) they have no possibility to use the earpiece speaker from their code as the phone OS will not allow this...

P.S. If anyone finds a way, please share as this issue is very annoying indeed!

OK, so the speaker issue is not resolved.
As mentioned before, physical keyboard is not working: on-screen keyboard fine.
I only use skype on wifi, but for me the call quality is improved.
So, other than the keyboard issue, it's a good update.
to use skype through the earpice instead of the speaker just install troca2.cab works perfect
Dear All
I bought the SGS (Galaxy S i9000, stock JM2 rooted and OCLF ) as on the paper is far the best hardware for the price. I bought it basically for using VOIP applications from the mobile. Unfortunatelly everything I tried
SIP Clients:
CSIPSIMPLE (last version works perfectly on SGS)
Proprietary protocols VOIP
FRING
NIMBUZZ
(only to cite some of the most famous) have an incredibly high delay during conversation (around 2 second ). Unusable as it is.
After trying with other android terminals I concluded that the problem is specific to the SGS at least on WiFi connection (I didn't try on 3G) and it is not related with the internet service (other clients works perfectly) or with the specific VOIP service.
It seems something related with the network stack of the SGS (or possibly the audio)
So..... HELP!!!!
I spent the last three weeks trying to figure out some fix/hack to use my phone as VOIP client. (As my old 4 year old Windows Mobile 5.0 pocketpc )
nothing seems to work. I'm waiting the froyo update which should be released in Italy in mid-nov.
I hope someone can share with me his experience about.
Thx
Trycage
Network delay - -maybe involved
Dear All
an update, I installed a SSH server in the galaxy S and logging inside using an SSH client I notice the same latency in the echo of the characters I digit.
(I receive the echo after 1-2 second). (If I usr a local terminal there is not such delay)
I look forward for your feedback
Trycage
I use sipdroid and it is perfectly acceptable; not more than a normal phone delay.
When you call using sipdroid it will show the network delay. In my case that is 70 to 120 ms.
You are right, sipdroid shows a much lower latency.
However the latency I refer to is in a loop-back test with a SIP server.
I don't know how SIPDROID measure the latency (it reports me value between 70-140mS). However the one-way latency (measure between my galaxy S and a computer client is much higher than the one indicated by sipdroid, More than twice).
When sipdroid report 140mS, I measured values around 280mS and an loop-back latency around 550mS, which is better but not stellar.
Trycage
@trycage: same problem for me.
Get a huge latency (around 1s) when I do an echo test with my asterisk box, either with the wifi or 3g network.
I've tested csipsimple, sipdroid, linphone, ..
I've update to froyo, installed oclf, etc..
to: chicha75001
I received feedback from CSIPSIMPLE developer, it seems this problem does not affect all the i9000 around. It would be nice if someone else could confirm the high latency, just to understand if there is something in common between us.
SIPDROID give an estimation of the latency during the call, which is the amount of latency reported in your test?
trycage
It seems that this post is going to die.
Still not found a solution .
no confirmation from anyone else.
Trycage
Yes. CSIPSIMPLE is a very nice app and it works like a charm on HTC Desire but on my Galaxy S no VOIP app works. The person I talk to hear himself with 1-2 seconds delay. Frustrating!
how come Skype works perfectly in I9000 but not anyother SIP clients..
I saw that Gingerbread will come with native SIP client. I hope it can fix this issue..
Any update on a VOIP solution that works on the Galaxy S? Its true that the apps I've used so far have been unusable, too much caller echo back
It could be your service provider is a pile of steaming dog poo (and the latency is because of your ISP).. Try another sim card from another provider...
I am a new user and have switched from symbian to android a fortnight ago.
Apart from the poor battery life which I am learning to train, I would like to have a voice call recording app which will auto record all calls without having the call on speakerphone.
Please don't get into legality since I would like to use them as notes so that I don't need to remember every word. Also I may have taken calls while traveling and may not have 100% recall the next day in office.
I don't mind paying for such an app if it works successfully.
Pl help...
app: record my call
well looks like record my call works fine with android 2.3 incredible s...
initial testing seems fine and the other party doesnt seem to be complaining...
allows you to record in multiple formats and names the file fine too...
the recorded sound is a little weird as if coming from behind a glass or something...
since i need it for taking notes i am okay with that...
the app is adware, wouldn't mind a paid pro version without the ads and better sound quality...
if anyone else has any other apps that work, pl let me know...
During calls other people hears my voice very low (i have to speak directly in the mic hole to make it clear), I exclude that it is a problem because of the microphone bulk, with the voice recorder it is perfect also speaking softly (it always use the microphone below). I exclude that it is problem of noise cancellation (s5 mini does not have this option) and in any case I tried to tap the microphone over near infrared and nothing changes. I exclude that it is a problem with the SIM card as if I use the speakerphone or headphones works perfect. G800F with stock kitkat. (no root, likes to keep warranty)
The phone is very new, already tried factory reset.
Any advice? Sorry for my bad english. thanks.

I understand ... actually i got the phone just a couple of days ago so i didn't make many calls. So i am not 100% sure that i have this problem too.
I know however that on water-proof phones the mics are somehow "protected" so they have worst audio mic performances that non-waterproof smartphone. I have also read online that some s5mini users solved their mic/audio problems by unistalling/freezing/disabling tha google "talk back" application. Maybe you can give it a try and see if it works.

That's for sure, my friend
For now i browsed the internet a bit and i found out 2 types of problems with the samsung galaxy s5's and s5 min's microphones. The first one is the low audio volume (the one you have) and the other one is the echo problem, i.e. the people you are calling do hear the echo of their own voices.
For now i just noticed that i have a kind of problem when using the phone call recording app i always used without problems ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nll.acr&hl=it ). When i play the audio file of a phone call, my side of the call is difficult to hear. I know for sure this happens when i hear the recorder audio file. But i don't know if this happens also in real time with the phone call. Could you please give the ACR app a try? And see how is the recorded phone call? Can you hear your voice in the recorder audio file?

But i don't know if this happens also in real time with the phone call. Could you please give the ACR app a try? And see how is the recorded phone call? Can you hear your voice in the recorder audio file?

Ok, i got it. I am new to android 4.4 (my previous smartphone had just 4.0) so i didn't know you caould also deactivate it. I used to freeze app with Titanium Backup on my old smartphone. I guess that deactivating it lead to the same result as freezing it with TB or unistalling it with TB.
Since you just deactivated it i can suppose you are also running full stcok android 4.4 unrooted?

So you are getting the same result as me. Did you try recording a phone call with the backcover of the phone removed? If so, how is your voice in the recorderd audio file? Does it get any better?
Hello,
I have a mini s5, I noticed that whoever calls me hear an annoying echo of his voice, I did already several SIM change evidence, the only way to eliminate echo is remove the back cover.
Should I apply for assistance, or is there a way to disable the upper microphone near the speaker?

I did this try myself and ... the result was no better. My voice is always very low ....
I also did another try with the earphone plugged into the 3,5 jack and ... the result was great! In the recorder audio file of the phone call i can totally hear my voice, loud and clear!! And i did this with two phone call recording apps:
ACR: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nll.acr
AutoCallRecorder: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.romang.callrecorder&feature=order_history
I will go on and try other phone call recording app, but i don't think this will get any better. I think this is really a problem with the 2 build.in microphones. Now it's hard to say if it is an hardware issue or a software/firmware issue. I am runnung 4.4 .... if someone running full stock lollipop could please give it a try and let us know. Maybe witha new OS release the mics behaves differently ...
Relased yesterday ufficial 5.1.1 lollipop for italian G800F ! installed today and the volume of the microphone is improved, now I would say that it is acceptable...although with other phone it's still better.
I think you should try to update too mr. "Night on the web"

Ciao, italiano anche tu?
Well, i updated my s5 mini 2 days ago (cause i have a slovakia phone, and the update came out last week) and i too have noticed some improvements. I though that it was just a placebo effect, but now that i hear the same impression from another user too, i think that something has changed. Maybe samsung re-wrote the drivers for the new android version and they came out to be better? Who knows ...
I also tried to record a couple of phone calls with the previous mentioned app ACR and the volume of my voice is pretty equal to that of the people i am talking too. Before, when i was on kitkat, the volume level of my voice was really really looooow. Now i can get really good audio files.
I am not sure if the firmware upgrade also solved the "echo" issue (which is totally different from the issue i had). Can someone give it a try?

Ciao, si
with ACR I still have the recording volume of my voice much lower to that of the people I am talking to, did you changed some settings in the app?
the "echo" issue, never happened to me too.

Well, in ACR i have set the same settings i had in my previous smartphone:
1) settings --> general --> the second option (which is notification; display a notification if ACR is turned on) deactivated. [but you can try to turn it on if it gets better]
2) setting --> recording --> audiosource --> MIC (usually, after installation, the default setting is automatic)
3) setting --> recording --> percorso audio --> automatic
4) setting --> recording --> formato di regsitrazione --> 3GP
When i was running kitkat i noticed that changing the setting number 2 did have some effects on the volume of the voices in the regsitration. If my settings don't solve your problem, you can try and change only that one. I remember that the "voice uplink" was a good audiosource to get better results. Give it a try.
PS. I have also de-activated the "supress noise" function in the pre-installed samsung voice recording app. This shouldn't intefere with the in-call recording but ... it might.

Changed the setting n. 2 (before was auto) , now I can hear me really loud! Thanks! However I'm still searching a way to increase mic volume gain to have a little more boost...

That is good news! :good:
I have tried to access a setting menu for mic volume gain but i had no luck.
I tried several key-combination (from the dialer) but some were uneffective on this specific device and others didn't led to mic volume gain.
Actually i am starting to think that, without root, it is not possible to access such feature.
By the way, while i was on kitkat, i noticed that with another voice recording app, i was getting better results. It is this app:

Since i was getting better results on kitakat, maybe you can get also better results on lollipop. You can try the two trial apks posted in the first post of the thread. With this app, i used audio "source-->audio uplink" and i was getting better results than with ACR.
