hello!
i have an i9000 that produces this error after flashing stock. and is stuck on a boot loop.
i believe* the internal SD is damaged.
i think there was a good (and understandable) guide on how to make the phone running from the external SD card (using ADB to swap the lines in /etc/vold.fstab)
tried to search for it but with no luck.
made me think maybe i was wrong and this wasn't covered? found hacks swapping the Internal & external storage, but they assume the phone is working, and doesn't contain detailed explanation. with all the info here it should be possible to run it from the external SD without a problem.
* reasons that makes me believe the internal SD is damaged is that just before the phone got stuck on boot loop, all apps / photos were erased on every reboot, until it stopped loading up.
plus, i already tried all the flashing stock, wiping data, complete SD card format and flashing .pit.... basically everything i found, and it didn't work.

I got this one as well but in my case this happened when I was flashing from stock 2.3.6 to CM9. I found on the net that I should flash twice. I tried and it resolved the issue. Hope it helps.

Please hear me out, as I know that this is not a typical dev forum question: As far as I can tell, I have an issue that seems to be affecting a good number of users. I was hoping that this thread might help someone in the Dev community figure out the problem.
I have a Canadian I9000M running Darkys ROM with NO lagfix and all tweaks but misc enabled. It has been running for 2 weeks without issue. I have multiple CWM backups on the internal SD card.
OK, here is what happened. This morning my phone was off and unresponsive, after removing and replacing the battery, the phone would boot up but the internal SD card would not mount in Android, giving the message "internal SD card damaged".
Tried to flash a whole bunch of backups, ROMs, kernals, etc. incl various Eclair and Froyo. Nothing will successfully boot except for my backup of Darky`s Froyo, and of course the internal SD is not available - as well as all my apps and settings. I was only able to boot the phone again when I flashed the Super Optimized Kernal and used CWM to restore my last backup.
I can`t mount the SD in any way - from within Android or CWM.
Here is the interesting part. CWM can still see my backups and restore them! So the internal SD is still functional to some degree, right?
Question: Can I move the CWM backups off the internal SD from within recovery mode? I tried playing with adb but couldn`t figure it out. I would like to avoid trying to reformat the internal SD before I can do this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
***
OK, so it looks like because the SD card was getting flaky, adb was not behaving consistently. I was able to connect to the phone in recovery mode and pull the entire contents of the internal SD using adb pull.
Now, anyone have any ideas to get my SD card back in Android??? Reflashing ROMs with PIT doesn't seem to do it. I will try again...

Recently i bought an 8gB class 10 sdhc card. Put it in my phone it was working fine. I copied all the files from my old card exacty as they were mounted the card again and the phone says the card is damaged and reboots all the time.
I put it in a friends samsung galaxy3. The card worked fine and all files were there. So obviously it has to do with my phone.
I'm using gingerdx the latest version with stock kernel.
I'd appreciate all the help you could give me guys. Thanks in advance.
try to format your sdcard (backup fist)
don't perform quick format..
still can't try format using phone..
then make a partition..
on developer forum we have a [guide] how to partitionning sd card
Nothing. I tried what you said I even reflashed my rom and worked it with no extra apps but phone still restarts when i try to move an app to the card.
I don't know if it's significant but i noticed that: I went in cwm and tried to mount sd-ext and I always got an error. Tried to format it again error.

do not perform any activity in cwm regarding sdcard it is not compatible, even format sd ext it will give you a result of damage sdcard for some rom or your current, resulting to reformat your sdcard, now backup all your files to pc,reformat your sdcard through your phone, unmount sdcard t then erased sdcard, then back your files...Hope it help...
Go to advanced in cwm and go to fix permissions. See what that does for you.

Guys thanks for all the replies. Nothing seems to be working though, phone keeps rebooting. Might just be a faulty sd card, but that would be the second in the row.
Hey All -
So even though I'm running two successfully rooted Samsung Captivates, both running the Dark Knight Rom Cyanogen 9 CWM, I'm super new to this, and am in need of some serious assistance. Recently my phone was accidentally factory reset by one of my kids, and after that it wouldn't boot. Luckily I bought some little gadget that shorts something in the device and puts it into download mode (it's been so long I have no idea what it was even called at this point). Anyway, I was able to flash the stock 2.1-Update1 Rom to the phone - which worked. Except ever since then I cannot download anything. I can't update anything. It says the internal sd card cannot be mounted, along with the external sd card. I know there's space - and the external sd card is 16Gb also. I'm really not sure what's going on. I've read somewhere that it could be some kind of corruption - but how do I format the internal drive if it can't mount or recognize it?
Any help is greatly appreciated beyond words. Thanks!

I'm not so sure why your internal and external aren't mounting but try to flash Odin KK4 with bootloaders: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
That will give you stuck 2.3.5 (GB). From there, you can follow this link to root and get cwm: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26710533&postcount=1 . -If you wanna get into custom ROMs, simply look in the Dev section for one that you like and follow it's full instructions.
I'm not 100% sure flashing Odin KK4 will fix your issue but it's a first step, let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice. So - using the Odin KK4 Bootloader one-click worked well - My device is now running GB 2.3.5. However, I still cannot mount the internal or external SD cards. I know this isn't the hardware in the device, because one thing did change.
When I was running Eclair 2.1-update1, I couldn't download or install ANYTHING - as SOON as I began a download it would FAIL - because it was reading there was no space. Well, After using the Odin one-click, the phone is partitioned differently, and I CAN download and install apps. BUT - here's what it says under settings/Storage Settings:
-------------------------------------
SD Card
Total Space:
Unavailable
Available Space:
Unavailable
Mount SD card
Mount SD card*
Format SD card
Erases all data on device's SD card, such as
music and photos
-----------------------------
USB storage
Total Space:
Unavailable
Available Space:
Unavailable
Format USB storage:
Erase all data on device's USB storage, such
as music and photos
------------------------------------
System storage
Available space:
1.77GB
--------------------------------------------
So I'm able to use the partition for "system storage" - I downloaded and installed an app just to be sure, and sure enough, my internal storage went from the 1.77Gb to 1.76 Gb - and the app installed properly.
When I try to use the camera, an error message reads:
"Turn off USB storage before using camera"
Also - when I try to click "Mount SD Card" under SD Card in storage settings it just sits there saying "mounting SD Card" until I give up and quit. It never actually mounts. Someone mentioned doing an RUU, or that I possibly lost my IMEI? But let me preface this message by saying I have knowledge of neither of those things. And it's a Jig that I use to put myself into download mode. Such a noob. lol. Thanks for the help so far. We're making progress...
Sheesh... So I just removed the SD card (external micro sd card) and immediately it told me it had been removed. Then an error proceeded to appear which disappeared too quickly to write down. It was something along the lines of:
"Process android. media.hub has stopped working...."
Then the phone reboot, and is now stuck in an infinite boot loop, where it simply continuously plays the opening 3G ATT intro video followed by the galaxy S intro video then repeats - for eternity. I've removed the SIM and Battery and tried again. Same results. So now it appears I"m stuck in an endless boot. Should I re-flash with Odin?
UPDATE:
So I ended up re-flashing - but this time, I took out the External SD card (I had left this in previously). This time - after showing a PASS with Odin and rebooting - applying the update FAILED. It said it couldn't mount E:/. I did this two more times to ensure this was not a fluke, and reached the same outcome. So I slapped the external SD card back in, and re-flashed, and VOILA - it worked. I'm back up and running - though STILL not able to mount my internal or external storage - and apparently - if I remove my external card, I'll enter an endless bootloop until I re-flash.
Did u try... pull battery, replace, reboot ? If no go then,
U could try to use the button combo to reboot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset then reboot. Try that before Odin One Click.

Unfortunately, yes. I did all those things prior to flashing with Odin. It seems that the initial flash goes smoothly, but then when I reboot the phone - for whatever reason - it's stuck in an infinite boot loop. I'm really confused here. Maybe I should try going back to stock Eclair again?
dont think going back to froyo will help.
keep the sd card in the phone, reflash kk4, then flash corn kernel.
it may be that your ICS rom (cm 9) had the EU error and your system is now using your 16 GB card as the 'internal usb storage' and the original internal sd is no longer available.
from kk4 with corn kernel, you can leave the sd card in the phone and try flashing the stable cm10 or a cm10.1 nightly.
you will need to flash it twice because jelly bean changes file partition scheme,
then flash gapps.
cm10 has the smarts to recognize a phone that has the EU error and will swap the partitions to make it work with your external sd.
you will find threads in the Captivate development forum with links and instructions for cm10 and 10.1 including links to gapps.
if you got the EU error, this fix should give you about 13 gb of user usb storage, it will actually be using your external sd. no known way to recover your internal storage.

Hey thanks man. I'll give it a shot after work today. That's fine since I have a 16Gb External SD card. My only concern is that I still won't be able to use the camera since it tells me now I need to stop using USB storage to use the camera. But I'll try it out and let you know what happens. Thanks.

So I flashed KK4, then added the corn kernel - but now I'm stuck. Remember my sd card won't mount properly, so to flash anything I need to use odin... Can I flash CM10.1 using odin? I tried doing this using a 10.1CM nightly, but it failed and wouldn't proceed.
UPDATE: So I redid this process and had a lot more SUCCESS!
I was able to mount the SD card through Corn Kernel and transfer a stable CM10 release, then flash successfully.
After boot it launched the CWM6 interface where I factory reset and cleared cache.
I rebooted and the phone booted successfully! It show's I'm on Jelly Bean and have 1.7 Gb of internal memory and 13 Gb of SD Card memory!
Thanks so much! My internal storage DOES seem to be gone - forever. But as long as this continues to work I don't see that as an issue... 16 Gb is plenty!
camera still says I have no SD card - but I'm going to try and download a different camera application.
Glad to hear it worked out okay. There may be a setting in gallery app that could fix the camera, idk. Camera app in jb is part of gallery apps.

Hi, tdunlavey,
I was having an issue similar to yours, and I've flashed kk4 and Corn Kernel, and I can boot up the phone now (yay!). But I don't understand how to mount the SD card through Corn Kernel and transfer CM10. Can you tell me how you did that? I would really appreciate it.

Go in recovery, mount/storage, mount SD card.
Hi... I actually tried that, and then I ended up back in a bootloop and had to reflash. I think that I'm in a situation where the internal SD card is lost and the phone is using the external card to boot up. And I suspect that when I tried to mount the card in recovery, it tried to access the internal storage and couldn't. This is all a guess. I'm a total newb at this stuff.
Also, my PC can't access mass storage on my phone. I was trying to move the CM10 zipped file onto the phone, but I got the "insert disc in drive E" error (for both drives E and F). When I look in settings, it has "Unmount SD Card" highlighted, so I couldn't choose "mount SD card" to get the PC to recognize the drive. I tried unmounting and remounting, but once I unmounted in settings, it wouldn't mount the card in settings, so I had to restart the phone.
Also, wifi doesn't work. When I try to turn it on, it just says "error". I can't access the Market, and most apps won't work. The phone works, texting works, the 3G works (I can use the browser or maps app), but it seems nothing else wants to work.
I appreciate any other ideas you have!

Sounds like your SD card might be dead.
You might have to swap everything to your external SD to have them work (like market and other apps). Sadly the internal storage isn't easy to replace so you either have to get another phone, motherboard or try to use it with the external SD.
replace external sd card with internal sd card
Hi friends
I will worke good news for the peoples who r using cyanogen mod and want to replace external sdcard with internal.
I was also on that situation before few hours. I solved this by my own.
It is very simple and no need to install any extra app. Just enter these following comands on terminal which is built-in on cyanogen mod.
1 . open the terminal
2 . su
3 . mount -o bind /mnt/sdcard /external_sd/external_sd
4 . mount -o bind /mnt/external_sd /sdcard
5 . mount -o bind /mnt/external_sd/external_sd /external_sd
Then close the terminal and chek ur storage or sd card options.
It will work 100% on each Android device running any cyanogen mod.
I have samsung galaxy w gt i 8150 with cyanogen mod10.1 alpha 6 jelly bean 4.2.2
Im sure it will work on you're device too. Don't worry just open terminal and enter these commands and see the magic.
Dont forget spaces u can see on commands.
Thank you.
Hi all
For days I've been flashing all different kinds of things in hope to get my phone fixed, but I just can't find the answer.
So for those of you most kind enough to help, here's what's going on with my captivate (at&t)
I took it out of my pocket last week and the phone was frozen. Sometimes it happens... a quick pull out of the battery and re-insert fixes it in most cases... but not this time.
After restarting the phone was hanging on boot screen (CyanFox bootscreen).
I restarted... 15 minutes on that bootscreen still. I had no idea what was going on.
So I decided to reflash. It was a big decision, seeing as this ROM has been working absolutely fine for weeks, but I needed to get it working.
Soon after getting it into recovery, CWM was saying that it couldn't mount /sdcard
I tried even flashing using Odin to go back to stock following the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843 still not working.
Most of them ended up showing that little android loading bar for a second or two, but then get stuck in a boot loop.
I tried flashing many different kernels, and different recoveries, but everything all pointed towards: Unable to mount /sdcard
But alas, finally I found something that more or less works. I flashed the Initial Kernal for Cognition: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127578
And I finally got back into a working device... or so I thought.
The phone is still unable to access the internal SDCARD. Just says 'unavailable'. I tried putting in an external 2GB sdcard, but that reads as Total Space: 00, and Available Space: 00
The external sdcard I know works, because my wife's samsung mini2 reads it just fine.
Multiple formats and it still can't be read.
I tried plugging in the device into my pc and select mass storage, but although the computer detects that the phone is plugged in (in device manager) the 2 drives for internal and external both remain hidden, and cannot be accessed.
I have absolutely no idea what to do next. I've used Odin and Heimdall, Repartitioned, and followed every stickied guide here, but I still can't find what to do.
I really appreciate any help anyone can give me on this.
Just for the record, ADB works just fine from my PC. I can send the commands to the device, but mounting the sdcard still proves impossible at this stage (no file exists).
Thanks again, I look forward to any advice anyone can spare.

i had the same problem a couple of weeks ago...
you internal sd card is dead...
you can do nothing about it for now...
if you want to confirm open your camera app and see if you can take any pictures...
if no, then follow the things as i say..
this requires you to do a partition of your external SD card and to that it should be formatted, so take the neccessary backups..
1) download this http://www.mediafire.com/download/sbjd049x4m36pb6/I897UCKI2_noBL_BoogsKernel.rar
2) after flashing this stock firmare with cwm, open up the recovery.
3)follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447303
4)i couldn't get ICS to work..
5)so you can now use kitkat roms only on the captivate as we have the kernel for 4.4 only with swap sd
6)so after you follow the guide and boot into ICS, copy the rom.zip which you want to flash and the neat kernel swap sd, which can be found here http://www.mediafire.com/download/s34o69u39u66x8n/NeatKernel_v1.03-[02-08]-cma-swap-captivate.zip, be sure to thank the developer here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2548081
7)so flash the kitkat om which you want to use,and then flash the neat kernel after flashing the rom after that you can flash the gapps and reboot..
if you do everything like i said, your cappy will be up and working again..
Sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar
Although it didn't go exactly as planned step by step, with your instructions I finally managed to get it working on my 2GB external card.
Here was the process I did
1) Downloaded CM11, Gapps, Stock Kernal and the SwapSD kernal you linked
2) Flashed the stock kernal, the phone just went on a rebooting spree.. but after a few attempts I got it into recovery using the 3 finger combo
2) Followed the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447303 to partition the external SD card. (Since I have only a 2GB card, I partitioned 1GB for data, and 0MB for swap)
3) Done the classic wipe sys/ cache/ data
4) (Here is where things changed a bit for me, as I couldn't boot into ICS either. And no other rom would work at this point) I installed the new SwapSD kernal to get a newer version of CWM by mounting USB storage via CWM and copying the files to there.
5) The device rebooted a couple of times during install, but it automatically went straight back into the newer CWM.
6) Installed CM11, let that finished and installed Gapps straight after.
7) Rebooted and the phone is now reading my external sd card as its internal storage, which is fantastic
Although with it's limited storage and broken internal storage, it still needs replacing, but at least I now have a device from which I can still run a few apps on regardless.
So thank you again dude
*edit* just need to figure out why the adb drivers decided to not work anymore.
Sometimes I hate having windows 8...
Hello,
I figure someone here might be able to help since most of where I found information regarding my issue came from this subforum. My phone is i897 (Captivate), but I think it should be similar; I posted there as well but no luck .
I normally can get by pretty well, and I have done numerous searches before posting for help. This time I have really run into a brick wall, and I really need help here.
Basically, I did something really stupid where I did not know that the phone had been booting off a external SD (my mom gave it back to me like that). Actually, I suspected that it did because the phone would have not booted without the card, however, I could flash my phone even if I removed the external SD card (as if the internal SD were there, but it wasn't), but it had always required me to insert the card back in for it to reboot from a flash. So I thought maybe internal SD was fine.
Originally, I had a Samsung 8gb class 6, but I wanted to change it to a 32gb class 10 ( to help the OS run smoother IF it were running on external SD). This is where I made a great mistake; I formatted the 32gb card and made 3 partitions. The first one is in FAT32 of 24 gb, 2nd is in EXT4 4gb, 3rd is the rest in EXT 4 as well. The original setup that was working had about 5.5gb in FAT32 and about 1.88gb of EXT(not sure which). The mistake was that I also formatted the 8gb card as well. In chronological order, these were what has happened:
1. I did a Odin stock reset to 2.3.5 with CWM injected
2. Installed Corn Kernel
3. Formatted both external SDs and repartition as mentioned above
4. At this point, I didn't know there was an issue. CWM sees the external SD and I tried to install CM 10.3 since I read in one of the threads that JB has a weird file systems and it needed to be installed twice to fix sdcard0 and sdcard1
5. CM10.3 installed kernel, and failed afterward since there was no /system and /data. At this point, I have Neat Kernel installed and lost bootloader along with fastboot and cannot access download mode.
6. I have tried to change EXT4 to EXT3 or EXT2 to see if there would be any luck in file system recognition, but no luck
7. The only way I can connect to the phone was through ADB, and verified that my internal SD card was dead because mmcblk0 was not there when I removed external SD
8. I tried to mount mmcblk0p1 (4gb EXT4 partition) and mmcblk0p2 as /system and /data, but I had been getting an error
9. I tried to use USB mount in TWRP, but no additional drive showed up (confirmed dead internal SD)
9. I tried to look for vold.fstabs but /system does not exist. The only *.fstabs file founds were in /etc file (not /system/etc) and is, for example, aries.fstabs
I know for the fact that it can be done because the phone was working before, but I really don't have enough linux knowledge or the what the phone looks at in chronological order in order to figure out how to remedy this. I would really appreciate if someone can guide me to a right direction. Thank you.

Thanks. I'll try when I get home to my desktop. For some reason, my laptop does not recognize the phone through adb. It shows "SGH-i897" in device manager with an exclamation mark. And yes, I have tried quite a few drivers, etc... :/
I might need to try this...

I just had a chance to look at it more thoroughly. The biggest problem for me is that my phone does not have an OS, and it's on semaphore kernel where I cannot access download mode nor fastboot. I have tried to install gingerbread kernel to try to recover download mode/fastboot (speedmods), but I kept running into error 0. I have also tried to modify the su.binary, but that didn't work :/. Any idea how to start? Thanks.

Based on your earlier comments on the partitions failing to mount, you should format: system, data, datadata, cache.

Well, I tried. If it doesn't mount at all, how can you format?
