i downgraded to Rc29.. Now need to update to 2.2? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So im using my spare G1 phone as a backup due to my Mytouch 4g crapping out. I don't want to spend the money on a new phone yet because i heard the Galaxy S4 is suppose to come out next year. I rather save my money and get that. On the other hand my G1 is slow and sluggish at times and so i wanted to update it to make it run smooth and faster. I did some searching and came across a guy who was showing a tutorial video on how to go from 1.6 to 2.2 android. Im new to this and this is my first time actually attempting to do this.
I went ahead and downgraded whatever version my G1 was to a RC29 like how the guy instructed me to and everything installed and booted right up like how it is suppose to. Now the next step is is to get the Telnet app which i did and when i was trying to type one specific command like (....... recovery recover.img) the telnet says no such file or something. I tried it again and nothing so i dont know maybe i might have done something wrong. So now the question is.. what can i do now? MY phone works fine but i rather have it updated. My friend who does this talks about like Cupcake being what he uses on his newer phone? Where can i go from here?

If you succesfully downgraded you are on android 1.0 and of course don't want to stay there. You need a recovery image put on the root of sd card. Then you need to open keyboard and hit enter twice
Then do nothing more than open telnet and hit ok
Then type
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
You'll see ##
Then reboot to recovery (hold home while powering on) flash a new rom. To go further you need to update your spl and radio. Then again update to the .28 radio and .13d spl, been a while since I have done this so read a guide quick. Google search
Cyanogen wiki root dream - get you links and instructions here
And flash cyanogen4
Make sure all is working then find ezterry's guide in the developers threar called 2708+ update or something to that extent. You'll need to know how to use fastboot (well it can be done in recovery but its not as safe)
Now you can flash newer roms.
If you get stumped search, if you're still stuck feel free to ask again

I think that is what i dont have.. is that root image. When i enter to the talnetd and enter that command to do the ".... recovery.img".. it says file not found. What do i have to go do? And yes i dont want to be stuck lol.

keep trying.
i like to put a telnet icon on the home screen then i do this and only
*be on home screen with nothing open
*open keypad and hit enter key twice and type telnetd
*close keypad
*press home
*touch telnet icon
*select ok
*type, flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img (notice spaces)
*wait for ## (3seconds)
boot to recovery
========make sure you named image recovery.img (windows may hide file extensions so you may want to name it just recovery)

dang now i gotta go find that video with the commands to type in. I totally forgot which one lol. let me seee

No need for a video
Google search cyanogen wiki root dream
Its all spelled out nicely

So i found that wiki page... still having that same problem. I installed and updated and rebooted the phone to the RC29. Now after downloading the "Amon_Ra's Recovery" file it says to rename the file to "recovery.img" and to copy to the sd card. So im guessing that is the K drive that i ahve the phone showing up as right? I did that and then open up telnet to type in the command "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img".. then it says "No such file or directory". So maybe i didnt send the recovery file to where it needs to go?

Download a file explorer and check, I believe linda works on 1.0

Ok i downloaded the fiel viewer and i see what i did wrong... when i renamed the file to "Recovery.img" the file on the sd card reads "recovery.img.img" lol Let me see if i can go thru it again using that file name. If not then i will have to do everything all over again.

Soooo i downloaded the Telnet and typed in the command "recover.img.img" and it worked. The (2) # signs showed up so now the Amon_Ra' file is installed. Now the next step for me to do is "Flashing the Radio"?

Yeah windows can hide file extensions some times.
Follow the radio update in the wiki
Then the spl update
Then flash cm5
Play around and then we can work on further upgrades to get newer roms working well

Ok i updated the Radio now and i went to check and see what i have DangerSPL.. my phone says in boot mode
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.23.02
..... now what do i do next?
Oh so i went ahead and DL the DangerSPL... installed it.. updated it... now im running on 2.2 i guess. I was trying to get the CyanogenMod6 but the wiki links are down... so i searched and stumbled onto this site
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-6-android-2-2-froyo-on-htc-dream-g1/
which had the DL link to Mod6 and the google apps.
So now the phone is rooted and ready to go furthere?

Make sure you have a fully functioning os, see what it is like, find a rom called super e or super d and see if you like those.
You can upgrade further if you feel it necessary.
To do so find ezterrys 2708+ thread and install new radio and spl via fastboot
All links will be found in the xda developers thread within the first couple pages
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk 2

Ok i will try that out. Are those one of the nicer programs to go with? Also will it have the google play market? Because i know the andriod market sucks ass and it doesnt have anything on there at all.

Yeah you have to be at least at froyo or possibly gingerbread for the play market.

Update... So in the end i ended up going with the Cyanogemod 6 only because it was easier to follow the steps. This is my first time ever doing this to a phone lol. Again i would like to thank you for your time and helping me out. Sooner or later ill probably update with a different rom and overall i learned how to flash and root phones lol. Thanks again!

Right on, cm5 is faster on our phones especially if you haven't upgraded to the .13d hboot yet. But congrats, play around and enjoy! Make sure to make a nandroid backup in recovery before flashing something else so you can quickly revert back

Oh i didnt know that lol i just assumed the cm6 was good only because it was a higher number. Yes i will for sure back it up and all. Thanks!

Major Help To Noob.

Hello Xda-Developers..
Well to make a very very long story short.. I got major phone problems. It started when I decided to Mod. My phone and followed a guide on Youtube to Mod/Jailbreak your phone. And I must admit it worked.. But it took a toll on me. Ok this is exactly what I did.. I moved the Dreamin.nbh file into my SD card.. Held down the Power + Camera button and everything seemed ok. Basically I followed everything step by step and it worked ok.. When I was finished rooting it I installed Jfrek-Rc33 followed the steps to do that.. When I got it on I was very excited.. after. While of reading about it I decided to go and get my old Apps back on my phone.. I went on the market and I couldn't find any of them.. I looked into downloading it online and I still couldn't... Did I do something wrong?? I looked around and didn't find anyone with this problem. I am now running RC-29... so where do I go from here =(... I'm regreting doin this -cries-
PROBLEM SOLVED
How did i solve my problem...?
1. When i modded my phone i rooted it normally and installed a version of JF-RC33.. Turns out this version wasn't compatible with the Market and i could not see a bunch of apps that i previously had with no problem.. So i downgraded to RC29 again and re-rooted my phone following This Guide.
2. After i followed that guide i installed CyanogenMod V4.0.4 Witch turned out to be pretty awesome.. And exactly what i was looking for.
3. Fingerlickin asked me to install a recovery but i had no idea.. What this "recovery" would do.. Until he explained a little and its actually something like a windows restore point just for your G1 witch you can get by following this guide and its majorly recommended.. .
Note: I didn't really understand the Recovery guide.. Until Fingerlickin guided me step by step.. (lol) With the installation of CyanogenMod you should have an APP called Terminal Emulator.. Click on it.. And type SU and hit enter. After that it should ask you if you want to allow this and just hit "Allow" When you move on the next screen type flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img and hit enter again. Next hit home and reboot in recovery mode by hitting Home + Power button... and there should be a couple of options different than before and just hit ALT + B or scroll to "nandroid backup". And tada! you created a restore point =)
4. Next i installed the RaDio from This website this "radio" is pretty much the "drivers" for your phone.. .. Anyways after installing the recovery you can install zip files into your phone without renaming them.. So just download that file put it into your SD card and turn your phone off.. Turn it on in recovery mode (home+power) and hit Alt + A or scroll down to "apply any zip from sd" and there you go! got your Radio on and you should be all set =)
So following those steps is how i fixed my problem.. Of course thanks to Fingerlickin for his awesome patience with me lol.. as you can tell. Hopefully someone uses this little guide i put together and if they have the same problem they now have something to turn to for a solution =D. Thanks again to Fingerlickin.
.. OK bye now. *walks out and closes the door*
going back to rc29 removed you root, follow the root process again but instead of installing JF, use cyanogen 4.0.4 (stable) when you're done we can look into what ever problem you are having with the market which I am unclear what that problem is at this point but it doesn't matter.
Sorry to be soo uninformed about this.. But by reroot do you mean download Telnet + Terminal Emulator.. And do that process again? But right now while running Rc29 I have the Wifi tether for root users.. and its working wouldn't that mean that I do have root?.. Just wondering >.<
As long as you keep using RC29 you have root.
You also have an invite on gtalk
You can use this guide here to help out with your rooting woes ^_^

Does the One-Click-Root method still work? As I've read mobiles after August, Google had already patched the exploit?

i have heard that google has had the exploit long since patched, but that it is up to the carriers to send out the update. it will mostly be done away with when donut is released.
since he was running a JF ROM he would be able to do the one-click-root, but david and neoblade is right I've heard alot of people with new phones say it doesn't work.
Cyanogen has also patched it in his ROM's.
I didn't realize carriers already sent out the OTA's. Last I heard was that it would be sent along with donut like david mentioned

n1 issues

hi everyone, im new to these forums. i want to love my n1, but cant. my service is horrible here in miami florida. so bad that tmobile keeps giving me free months of service instead of a solution.
i was told about holding the phone a certain way, but its so unnatural. but i understand that a few firmware updates helped out the signal issues. me and my sons nexus ones are fluctuating 20-50 dB's at a time.
so i try to root using the cyanogen wiki's instructions. the second i type in adb devices into my windows 7 cmd window, i get the following. "adb is not recognized as an internal or external command"
i repeated the steps in the wiki and have no idea what i am doing wrong.
can anyone assist please?
Mod, if i posted in the wrong section i am sorry; feel free to move thread.
thanks all!

No I used the windows cmd window. I saw the android cmd window but it wouldn't let me type in it. Was I supposed to type in the android window?
Before you go and unlock the phone and install cyanogen, are you sure you want to go down that road? I don't think there are any reception improvements in any of the custom ROMs, so if that's what you are hoping for you might be disappointed.
You may lose your warranty if you do it, and you are going to permanently lose the over-the-air upgrade system that Google uses to push upgrades out with.

You need to read up a lot more on how your computer works, and directory structures, and cmd windows and all that. If you are already confused you could just end up breaking your phone. First thing is to install the SDK. Get that done, then read some more, etc. Do it slowly.

Thanks for the heads up. The sdk is definately installed.
I heard that the other radios perform better. I need a miracle, I drop 60% of my calls according to tmo. So does my sons n1's. My daughters cliq and wife's bold9700 are always on 3g
What Baseband version do you have installed on your phone? It's under Settings -> About phone.
You should be running the newest radio firmware already I would think.

I don't know it off the top of my head. But its definately current.
Well if you want to check it out, I believe "32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2" is the newest. If that's what your phone has then I don't think there is any value in unlocking.
An update from Google should be coming or announced before the end of the month, so maybe it'll have some fixes for you. If not, than at that point I would go ahead and unlock it.
i went ahead and successfully unlocked the boot loader. im trying to load the recovery.img via a terminal app on my phone but i get a message saying permission denied. i heard that there was a way of loading the recovery.img through rom manager, so i tried it.i got a message saying an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands.
any ideas?
thanks!
seems like i dont have superuser.....
Yup, when I type su in terminal I get a message telling me that I don't have those privaleges. Any ideas? I'm Googling but can't find results.
i find the instructions in here relatively newb friendly. But read all carefully before rushing into action.

and... do all the above first, before you mess with the radio image. all over the above is relatively safe/cannot brick your phone but wrongly flashing radio image can brick your phone permanently (especially if you run out of power or pull the battery during the radio update process)
Thanks. I'm er27. Do I flash with or without himen?
to make it very simple, i'd just recommend first:
1) flash Amon_Ra's recovery image 1.70 (i sent you the link earlier)
2) flash Cyanogen CM5.0.6 (I sent you the link earlier)
3) flash CM's google-addon (on the same page)
CM5.0.6 includes Himem, no need to flash separately.
See how it goes.... THEN you can try flashing radio to EPE54B, but please read all related to that careful. the command is simple, but if you pull your battery during the update, or the phone runs out of power, or you otherwise try to interrupt the process, your phone WILL BE permanently broken. Sometimes the radio update takes a long while (15 min or so), and it seems unresponsive, then you have 2 automatic reboots - those moments can be frightening. best would be to leave the phone plugged into the power socket while you doing it

CM6 to Stock

I have nexus one rooted with an unlocked bootloader. It's on CM6.1. I was trying to get it back to stock but nothing worked. I downloaded FRG83 from developer.htc.com. Tried copying it to sd card, no luck, gives me "cannot read or write file". Tried copying my Nandriod backup to SD, came error. Multiple sd formats later, manage to get update.zip on to sd card. Try to flash, gave me an "no update script found error". Still can't copy nandorid to sd.
Any suggestions?

I'm sending my N1 back to HTC for a device swap. Running CM6.1-RC1 right now. What I'm getting from that is download FRG33, rename it to passimg.zip, and that's it? Because that hasn't been working.. Phone never asks if I want to "start the update" as per line 8 in the wiki..

Rename it to PASSIMG.zip (case sensitive).
If that still doesn't work, please tell us what HBOOT version you have.
I did the exact same thing for my device swap. I picked up my replacement phone at Hagen's in Blaine, WA, around 1 PM and then went to the coffee/sandwich place across the street. While waiting for and eating my sandwich, I managed to:
- Plug in the old phone to the wall outlet, take a nandroid backup
- Transfer battery, mem card and SIM (T-Mobile with web day pass) to new phone, boot
- Install Astro and ROM Manager from Market, root FRF91 on new phone with VISIONary from SD card, flash ClockworkMod
- Restore nandroid backup to new phone
- Put pre-downloaded PASSIMG.zip in place
- Transfer battery & mem card back to old phone, wipe it to stock ERD79
- Reassemble new phone, pocket it, pack up the old one in the box, and ship it back out to HTC before Hagen's closed at 3 PM
Twas a fun day =)
Haha nice...sounded like a rather productive day. And all under a time constraint, to boot! ;D
In any case, I wasn't aware that passimg was case sensitive. However, I had it in caps already lol. I have HBOOT-0.33.0012.
Maybe I should watch my text case... xD
When in HBOOT, do you see several lines of lime green text flash up for a few seconds, as your phone looks for image files?
If not, try toggling the volume key, or selecting FASTBOOT, then back to HBOOT (or BOOTLOADER - I forget the actual text). The goal is to see those lines of lime green text...

If it's the same FRG33 that's on shipped roms, then you need to extract it, then rename the extracted file to passimg.zip
Turns out the files I downloaded were simply corrupt. Redownloading did the trick. I feel silly haha. Thanks for all the feedback though!

[Q] Help with rebooting hero. $$$ for fix...

Before you tell me to 'Google it' (which I have, and leads me to 1000 posts of people telling other people with the same problem to 'Google it'), please read.
I will PayPal anyone $20 with working instructions of how to resolve this
Phone: HTC Hero w/ chin
Carrier: Alltel
Story:
Switched from WM6 Palm Treo Pro to HTC Hero. Came with 2.1 and needed apps2sd. Want CM7 stable.
-Rooted using AndRoot.
-Installed SuperUser and Root Checker. Root Checker said I was good to go. SuperUser would not show any apps in the list this whole time.
-Installed Titanium Backup which said I needed BusyBox, but it would fail to install. Tried to install busybox and it said I was not rooted. Alright...
-Installed ClockworkMod and flashed recovery. Tried to reboot into clockwork recovery, but when I clicked it, it did nothing. When I clicked rom from sd card, and clicked the CM7, it said 'going to reboot now' but again, nothing happened.
I booted into recovery manually, but it was still in Android system recovery. Apparently there was some sort of rooting problem, so I tried z4root. Permanent root was stuck on 'rebooting', and temporary root said successful, but something was still wrong as BusyBox installer would say I was not rooted, and SuperUser app didn't show any programs to allow permissions.
I turned the phone off, and back on. It goes to the white 'HTC' screen, reboots, and then comes to a black page with a picture of a Hero and a red triangle and exclamation mark. I hold home and hit power, and it takes me into the Android system recovery. I wiped data and cleared cache, rebooted, and it does the same thing.
- - -
Now i've done many hours of research, and found nothing to help me. I guess i'm a bit confused on what the SDK does and how to use it, because it won't connect to my phone since I can't even boot my phone into the OS. I tried to download the RUU and rename it update.zip, but it says signature verification failed or not found in android recovery. I've done the clear data method by holding home, back, and power, but still nothing.
I need a clearcut answer for getting back to a stock Alltel 2.1 OS on my phone. I am more advanced than a basic user, and have flashed many roms on Windows Mobile, but remember I might not exactly understand everything.
I'm a silent browser on these forums but now I come to you guys for help. I hope to grow into a dev and hopefully help someone in the future in my position.
I read somewhere to wipe EXT2, but still confused on that process as it seems I don't know how to get into adb command line on my computer.
Try reflashing the cwm recovery. Sounds like you have no recovery image.

Dumb question...did you flash a ROM? Maybe I missed it in your post, but I see you installed Clockwork, SuperUser and all that, but don't see that you flashed a ROM. *EDIT* I see you did...
So...worst case scenario, if you can't even boot your phone, just start over from scratch...
Download the original AllTel ROM from here.
If you don't have HTC Sync set up and can't restore from your computer, use this method to flash it...your phone should now boot...
Then try to reroot, using this (preferred) or this.
Download ROM Manager from the Market and install ClockworkMod Recovery
Boot to recovery (hold home and power at the same time).
Once in recovery, wipe cache, system, data and boot (make sure you don't wipe your sd card! Do it twice for good measure)
Select install .zip from SD card, select zip and you should be good to go with a rooted phone and a new ROM.
I think that should cover it...
Ok, on your first link to flash my phone, the step says:
"With phone powered on, do "adb reboot bootloader" to enter fastboot."
How do I get the command prompt on my computer to communicate with the phone? That was my biggest problem when reading other people's posts. I guess i'm a bit lost. I installed the r10 android sdk which I believe is the first step? And when my phone is connected to the computer to enter these commands, is it okay if it is sitting at that screen with the red triangle?
Thanks for your help btw your steps sound simple, and simple is nice. One step closer!
Do you have HTC Sync set up? If you do, you should be able to restore from that to get you back to official AllTel...That's going to be the easiest way to get you back to stock I think.
And...I am on a Mac So, helping someone on a PC is not my forte with ADB
I'd try setting up HTC Sync and get yourself back to stock that way.
EDIT - To get it to communicate, you need to set up ADB and all that. Then just use command prompts...Try this thread for help/instructions.
I actually got it to load that rom with vol down + power but eventually got to 'CID incorrect! Update fail!', so i'll try connecting to sync.

What ROM? The AllTel one?
I have to take off until about 8:30 or so...get yourself set up with HTC Sync and get the USB drivers and all that set up, first thing you need to do is get your computer to talk to your phone...download the official AllTel RUU and restore to stock. That's task 1
Then we'll get ya rooted

It's tough sometimes to follow things...and as much as we always tell people to search, ya know, the search kinda sucks I searched for all the threads I linked for you, but I knew what I was looking for. If you don't know what to look for, searching is kinda tough. Glad you got it!
Now...if you want a real ROM, I'll just toss this one out there In all actuality, CM7 and aospCMod are quite similar, I am just partial to aosp's builds.
Let me know if you need any more help.

started telnet when I click connect
I get either server refused
or null

yeah 2 times, then type telnetd (ignored the contact search), press enter.
open telnet, click connect. Does the port make a difference? I left it as it was, its set to 23
you should make a gold card (just goole it)
or well can you update via ota, under settings look for updates, if you can get to 1.5 then you can use androot or maybe see if THIS GUIDE helps.
ive only rooted one rogers branded g1, and you dont do the dreaimg.nbh method rather
LIKE SO but at this point you need to move on, try some of the above stuff

ok went searching for update in settings and noticed firmware is at 1.5 , I didn't think it could update automatically without a sim? so I'm guessing DREAIMG.nbh didn't take? Just messed my recovery? I installed Androot and it says I'm "already rooted, root again?" The first guide you pointed to THIS GUIDE says for "Tmobile G1 only", should I go ahead anyway? The last one LIKE SO , I would like to try the rogers_1.89.631.1.nbh but it seems to have disappeared from the net. I'll look into the gold card idea this weekend. Thx for your input :good:

Well made a gold card, but got a message "main version is older" when I tried to update the image, I think the problem is finding the right image file. I thought Gold cards got around that? I guess I'll just use 1.5, doesn't have everything I want, but its working at least. thx for the help just the same
The gold card didn't take, may need to use a different sd.
But did you say you have root? Do you have a custom recovery? Maybe you can go about this in a different way, can you post everything on your bootloader screen?

I read your post to m3talmouth:
Find amonra recovery in xda, latest is 1.7 something
Put on root of sd card and name it recovery.img
Open a terminal and type
su
If you see a # procees
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
If you have an error it could be you need to add the flash image bianary or you have a bad download or named it wrong,
I figured It might work for me, now I have AmonRA recovery 1.7 :good:
So now following the guide you posted earlier http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Dream/Rooting_Branded_EBI1s, I should install the engineering SPL, then the EB1 port file, then flash cm 6.1.zip?
Hey good! Well if you have a custom recovery you are most of the way there, now remember you have a rogers dream and need tgo flash the proper radio and spl, make sure they are listed for your phone, check md5sums, flash radio first then spl then id recomend cm5 (faster) flash rom and gapps
Do this right, just the other day someone flashed either spl first or a curropt image and got a brick. Only warning so you don't but as long as you do what I said above you'll be safe

Well...I i did a nandroid backup, tried i now have the eng SPL installed, tried the CM 6.1 as it was easier to find for my phone + the port file, but it stuck at rogers boot screen. I've seen some posts for 2708 kernel but it never mentions this in any of the install guides. I have found CM 5 roms but only with the 2708 kernel and no mention of rogers, so I'm staying clear of those for the moment. Will search some more for CM 5, its not Android 2.2 though is it?
Cm5 is 2.1 but smoother than cm6 on these phones. You can flash the one in cm wiki just flash the right kernel on top of it. If you want to do the 2708+ update (I say a good idea) then just follow ezterrys instruction in his thread. Download radio and SPL, check md5sums, and then flash via fastboot. Now they can also be flashed in recovery but I don't recommend it. After that you can flash any of the newer ROMs and it won't mater that your phone was once rogers. But older ROMs (mostly eclair and older) will need a different kernel flashed on top of them

Success!!!!! I have CM 5.08 + 2708 installed and working, thx for everything, will try this mod for a while to see if it covers all I need, if so I'm good to go. :good:
Awesome! You may need to move to froyo if apps you need aren't avalible on 2.1, there are many good aosp and cm variants just straight cm6 is kinda poor on these phones, try a few out, make nandroids so you can change back easy, there are about a dozen 2.3 and 2.2 roms that I feel run great on the dream and I personally keep a back up of each for a quick change

Do not forget that your phone is no longer EBI1.
You will no longer need to flash EBI1 ports.
On a side note, looks like you somehow got the 1.33.0014 update.
1.33.0014 is a bootloader released by HTC somewhere last year for HTC Dream. They claimed it was unlockable, and you could flash with it. I did the unlock process, and I can promise you that HTC duped us. It's not unlockable. The unlock does absolutely nothing other than change the text at the top. I even had someone reverse some of the code, and they claimed the code for doing fastboot flash doesn't seem to be there.
yeah the .0014 official unlocked bootloader is a crock, when it first came out i was about to test it and someone else here tried first, turned into a nightmare for him so i tell all to stay away! some phones it actually isnt too bad if better ways like hacked bootloaders or radio s-off has been found for it, but its a pain and you usually need to flash a rom in recovery, extract the kernel from the .zip and then flash the kernel through fastboot.
so yeah any phone that you dont need this option, stay far away from it!
