I am currently on RocketRom JB v3 but since this will be the final version of RocketRom, I am looking for the next best ROM. So far I know all of the buzz is between Ultimate and AllianceRom.
So I just want a feel of what the community think and I will go with the one everyone think is best.
Go buy an iphone
I think this thread will probably either fall on deaf ears or you will get lots of comments about read both ROM's threads or try both and see what you prefer. You may also get helpful comments like the 1 above.

You should understand that XDA is not about one rom against another.

I understand this very well and this poll was never intended to be about which rom is best for me, this poll is all about everyone here helping me decide which one to try first by sharing their thoughts on which one they think best suited them.

Ultimate, it functions best to install as alliance relies on scripting and choices made throught an app.
For cleanest install thrn only possible for Ultimate as you can format system and data and install.

Hi joosh3.
I'm can't post request on your Ultimate N7000 XXLSC 5.1 thread, so can you consider adding Recent apps button on the notification panel, near Settings button.
Or someone send my request to joosh3, thanks.

You should make a summary of the results of the poll.
ultimate is the best TW rom so far ..nothing coms close to it ..ive tried most of the TW jb roms out there but i keep coming back to ultimate,no offense to the devs but my personal choice is ultimate
Ive tried em both, And both are extremely well crafted and run perfectly.
I wouldnt say one is better / worse than the other, they are equally as great in their own way.
The only advice I (as well as many others) can give is: Try them both ! test them for several days and see which performs better FOR YOU.
So these are the two roms that are currently popular huh? Thanks for helping to reduce my reading time. I'm surprised Ultimate is a bit popular than Alliance. But this is good to know.

Thanks for your input, I actually tried Alliance first but for some reason I couldn't get it to work, constant boot loop, spent hours trying different ways to get it work but no cigar. I am currently trying out Ultimate, I am rather happy with it. I will follow your advice and try alliance rom again but probably after a few weeks of using Ultimate.
Thanks to everyone who contributed into this, by the looks of it, both Ultimate and Alliance comes really close and it is almost split in the middle of what the community thinks.
don't compare any rom on this forum, every rom has a plus and minus, you want to know what is the best one? try it yourself, and what rom seems match for you, because if you ask people here of course they have a much reason for himself why he choose "that" rom.
Thanks.

And that is what I am after, what majority of the people think is the rom "they" like best. Maybe I shouldn't of worded it as Ultimate Vs Alliance but what I want to know is statistically which rom is most popular. If people actually read the thread they should know this is what I was after at the very beginning.
Look in the development sections and see which thread have the most replies / views, they are mainly the most popular
Some have issues with Alliance, I had some myself, frequent bootloops, sticking on GT-N7000 screen and so on, but with a bit of tinkering I fixed it.
Now im using Ultimate, and it satisfies my every need, So im sticking with it Its Fast, Stable, Smooth, Rarely gets laggy and is frequently updated which is a main USP for me, I like the fact that the Dev listens to the users and is always improving on it.
But as the rest say, just try them all.. There are some wicked AOSP ROMs out there too so dont focus all your attention on TW JB Leaks, Unless thats what you prefer ?

I hope this is in the right section. But with many roms and so many versions, there isnt a pros and cons rom sheet out there. It would be nice to know what rom is better at this and what rom gives you that. It also would be nice if people could start uploading short video tours of each rom. That way everyone can get a brief look at the appearence and menus each different rom has, to help us decide which we like.

That can be a huge undertaking for most devs, not only managing the development of the ROM's, but fielding questions and such. While it's a cool idea, it's not too practical. The ROM's at XDA can change SO quickly, it would be impossible to keep up with attempting to video it. Some of the ROM threads you'll see, don't even have screen shots.
I think the main reason is, most of the ROM's are going to be BASICALLY the same, in terms of operation. Past that; it's going to be functionality, how the dev cooks the ROM, and what he/she puts in it. In the end, it's all visual. Themes, apps, wallpapers, and so on. I could send you videos of the past 10 ROM's I've flashed, and I can tell you, you would be very hard pressed to tell me which ROM is which, just because of how I mod it to suit my needs.
My suggestion is to read the threads, find a dev that is present in the forum, find a thread that is supportive and will allow you to find the answers you need. Then try it. From my experience, each Captivate is a little bit different, and yours my respond a little differently than mine will. You just need to put some time and work into figuring out which one will work for you.
That's not to say that there aren't some ROMs that are wildly different than others. I've certainly flashed a couple ROMs that blew me away with what they had, but that is indeed rare.

Yeah, that is true.
Adam has a REALLY good thing going with Phoenix. His functionality of the GPS is hands down the best I've seen. The theming is great, but for me, he's good people, the team has alot of pride in the project and it shows in the thread.
Yes and actually the only 2 roms I've ever used that had good GPS were Phoenix and Assonance/Serendity. I can't tell you which is better, I just know that both have working GPS
the best way to know is to try them

Cezar's Continuum is the best I have seen.
You gotta try each rom out and see which one suits best for you. I'm sure you can try out roms for 30 minutes to an hour when devs have worked on for hours and hours releasing their roms. At least that's how I like to think.
It comes down to how you customize it. all the rims are great, but eventually it boils down to the kernel, modem, scripts, tweaks, and other things you add in yourself. My gps is accurate to FEET in sacramento, and locks in five seconds or less thanks to da_g and his fix. The telus modem helps a ton too. So in the end we all arrive at different roms. Doing video tours would be terrible cause not all roms are the same in the end

Ok guys we all know this is not the place for this lol. The best way to find the pros and cons of the roms are 2 things. 1. read the thread (I know who whats to have to read for what they are looking for lol j/k) 2. Try it your self and read at least the first page
There are a ton of ROMS out there for the Captivate and I've tried quite a few of them. However, I'm not sure what the differences are or which one is right for me.
I've heard of:
Cognition, Perception (by Designgears)
FireFly, Phoenix (seems like these are by the same person)
Serendipity
I haven't tried Serendipity or Perception, but I've tried the others I listed. Various ROMS say they are based off of KB1 and JP6 (I probably have these wrong) as well as various other 3-letter names. I'm not really sure what these mean, but I think they relate to the ROM being based off of Android v2.1 or Android v2.2.
Here are a couple of things I'm looking for in a ROM:
Battery life is important to me. Most roms so far have been very good at this so long as I change the Wifi sleep policy to "Only when plugged in". If WIFI is on permanently, my battery life is crap.
I prefer a good theme. FireFly's theme is pretty good. It looks great and has nice window animations.
Must be at least Android v2.2. Gingerbread would be awesome but not a requirement.
Stability. Specifically, all phone/hardware features need to work and there should be minimal bugs. For example, using CM7 for Captivate at this point would be out of the question since it's still so young and I've heard it is unstable/buggy.
Based on what I've tried and my requirements, Cognition probably isn't going to be an option. The last time I used Cognition (when it was v3), it wasn't themed and was just an optimized version of stock.
Firefly, Phoenix and Serendipity all seem to be the same thing but with a slightly varied theme. I'm most confused by this. What are the differences here? If there are technical differences, I'd like to know those too. I think each are based off of different firmwares, right?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

This is not helpful at all. This is what I've been doing.
I need someone to go over the technical differences between my choices, since I don't fully understand them myself. I have yet to find a guide somewhere that talks about the technical differences between all of them.
Can someone else provide some helpful input?

The best place to find any info abt any ROM/kernel would its OP. Try looking there.
Plus there won't be so much use of anyone compiling the differences 'cos a new version would be out every now n then. This is one of the reasons why there is no such thing.
Rather than asking for something generic like this, u could ask more specific questions like say. That way u wud get ur answers sooner.

1. wifi always has phone searching for it all time the screen is on. So keep it in when screen turns off, or the option u selected.
2. Themes are personal choices. Based on the ROM u choose, u can select theme of ur choice, or make a theme urself. There are guidelines posted.
3. Most ROMs now are 2.2.1. Would be mentioned in the OP.
4. Custom ROMs cannot guarantee that. Devs take all care and iron out issues when they find or when someone tells them abt them.
Check out a few ROMs and settle for one that suits u. And if u plan on putting on custom ROMs, don't bother on keeping ur hands clean. I think I flashed more than a dozen different ROMs before settling for what I am on now. And since I now found what suits me best, been sticking to it.
This is the normal process most people follow here.

Unfortunately, mcord11758 and diablo009 are right.
The differences are minimal, and you need to research each ROM. The very basics are.
MOST roms right now are running Froyo 2.2.1. Some are still 2.2. The JPY, JS3, JS5, KB1(Stock 2.2) Are, for lack of a better definition, are build numbers.
What you'll need to do is, quite frankly, read up on one that has your interest, flash it and if it doesnt work well for you try another. Each Captivate may respond to a ROM differently to the ROM/Kernel/Modem combination. So you literally have to try it
So is it just me, or is there no thread with a poll on what people believe is the best rom out now? I've ben looking with no avail. This brings me to the question, does it not exist because we aren't allowed to have a poll like that, or am I the only one who is interested?
U find no thread because it is biased. Most of the rom's have there own pros and cons. so just close this thread

That's a negative way to look at things. Why is it that people in XDA are so quick to trash ideas or questions?.
It may be biased, but in the end EVERYONE has chosen a rom to have on their phone, so why not share the stats with everyone else? Might help some others decide which of the many ROMs to try out.
I found Tricky's essential rom to be the best regarding simplicity, battery life and performance. I like to manually install everything I will use, so that keeps the system lightweight. I only wish it had battery icon w/ percentage by default!

Darky's 9.4 + VooDoo 5.5.1 works great for me.
Using Darky 10 Final and waiting for CyanogenMod 7 Final
Darky 10 is good, cm7 is better if you can handle 12 hours of battery life... I'm on ultimate 8.2 right now and I have actually kept it on for over a week.... oh and don't forget about the goodness that is MIUI. Install that and its like a totally different phone.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
i've tried Darky's ROM up to 9.5, Doc's ROM & now on MIUI..i think, every ROM got it's own strength which is amazing given that the ppl that manufacture the phones can even give a decent update even after few months..
but..MIUI is totally different and cool to use! Even though the battery drain is visible, maybe need a couple of charge cycles to stabilize..all in all, it's refreshing n can keep me away frm flashing at least for few weeks (or till the next update..hehe)..
i think this is a good poll !!
if you can find out how to edit it, and adjust when new ROMs come out.
this could save a lot of people posting pointless threads about what ROM to choose and why.
they can see what the majority of people go for, and if we can write a little explanation of what ROM we chose and why, it could be beneficial
I chose MIUI - it has developed a hell of a lot in the past few weeks, all the main features work, there is updates weekly without fail, Very helpful team of devs and the ROM is super nice and is nothing like any other ROM out there !!
For a long time I was very happy with darky 8.x but lately I have been trying out almost all the roms in the poll and since a couple of weeks back I have been a extreamly happy user of MIUI.
Feels like it have brought new life to my sgs, the only downside is the battery time.

Hello, I would like to know which custom ROM can I use, I bought a Captivate from ebay that comes with Cyanogen Mod 7.
I would like a ROM that has the best battery life and with the least bugs. I know all ROMs have bugs but I'm trying to get the one with the least bugs and that is fast and with a good battery life, or atleast a decent battery life.
I know that maybe you hate these type of questions but I really can't decide which one to use because there's a lot of them.
Thanks,

You should read the development threads in the captivate section and make an informed decision. Also make sure You understand what you need to do coming from cm to a different rom

Try them out and find one that suits you. Because everyone has different opinions. Plus rom makers put their hard time and work to make these rom. That why these type of post are looked down on.
Well but there's a lot of them and I just wanted one that was the most bug-free and with most battery life, and I posted this so anyone can tell me at least, for example 3 ROMs or whatever, that fit the description, to just decide between those 3 and not all of them.
Find some rom that look interesting, and do like mcord11758 said read the rom threads and see what people say about them. It sounds like all you want is the outcome without doing the work.

If you're not familiar with flashing roms, you should start with something froyo based. They've been around longer and for the most part are more stable and less bugging. For the most part.

That is certainly not a true statement! Just because something has been around longer does not mean it is any more stable. The GB Roms are quite stable, with no more issues than what I had with Froyo Roms.
I personally like Miui the best...but the the others said, check out the development thread and take a look at all the roms offered. Many of them offer exceptional battery life and great performance. It comes down really to your general preference.

There is no best ROM. It solely depends on your preference.
Cassie's XtraLiteRom was the 1st ROM I flashed with. But it removed too many features which I deemed essential.
Then I flashed to DarkyNote ROM. But I encountered too many bugs.
Finally, I flashed Sheep ROM, and have been using it ever since for 2 weeks.
No bugs as of yet. I like its balance of pure stock and optimizations/tweaks.

Again you're right.
But in this way ppl can save time, making an idea of pro/cons of some ROM.
Do you never look at the rating or comments about an app to decide wether install it or not or wether it worths to try it?
For ROMs I think this kind of opinion is much more important and useful.

Let's be honest here...there IS a best rom at any given moment. There is very little criteria needed to decide which is best:
1) speed/performance
2) battery life
3) functionality/options
4) theme/aesthetica
1 and 2 are pretty straight forward, 3 doesn't have much budge room either and for 4, some people like loud and colorful cartoons on their phones and others prefer a cleaner, more minimalist look.
I can never understand why so many people dislike this kind of best rom thread. There ate a lot of smart, informed people on here who could offer better insights as to the pros/cons of multiple roms, why discourage this?
I've used every rom in the Dev thread and it its crystal clear to me that rocket rom is far and away the best in all the aforementioned categories. Cassies was ok but too thin, sheep rom was good at first but got swallowed up by the competition. Check rom is good but rocket is better, darky flat out sucked and there its no reason to go into the rest.

Can I help me pick a rom too? I'm reading up on Rocket ROM and Check ROM right now though.
Here's what I need:
1 & 2 - Max / best possible combination.
3 & 4 - I may only need highly-significant, innovative changes that you can judge as sort of.. "something you've been missing" while on stock rom. But then again, I may not have much regard for a specific item so I can probably live without it.
THANKS!!
Tbh, DarkyROM really seems to be buggy. I've read too many bug reports in that thread. I tried the ROM myself, and encountered numerous bugs as well.
I'm going to try Rocket ROM to see if jason370's claims are true.
I think we need some AOSP-based ROMs ASAP.
EDIT:
I've tried CheckROM v2 before, too.
I got random bootloops with AbyssNote v2.8, so I was forced to restore back to Sheep ROM.
Only recently received my shiny new Galaxy Note and the first thing I did was root it, CWM it and get the following ROM installed:
CheckROM Revo NoteHD
The reason I opted for this one is that the ROM Kitchen adds a lot of options for customization which means the tweaks I get are decided by *me* and not a ROM developer. So far I have yet to experience any problems with it and it did allow me to overclock. It even goes as far as letting you switch kernels from the device its self, can't fault that!
So far I'm a happy chap and glad I switched from my old iPhone 4!
I think n7000xxkl8 Rom will be best if u install it with mobile Odin.

I think you're talking about stock ROMs.
I tried romow and rhapsody.... now I'm using rhapsody and I find it very fast and stable.
As the note is my only phone, I have to run stock which is fine by me. Can't risk issues etc...

Running Checkrom on my SGS2 and planning on running the same thing on the galaxy note when i get it this week. its the perfect rom for people who want a stock experience on steroids. Im guessing the note version is basically the same thing.
However, Im kind of shocked about many users reporting bad battery life and laggyness on the note. That was my main problem with most android phones since day 1 and have not had a single issue like that with my sgs2 since ive had it. I was hoping the note would be an improvement over that, I guess i will have to find out.

No issue and no risk with rhapsody... Me too I have only this phone!

I have tried Rocket and currently on CheckRom V3.
My personal experience, Rocket has better battery life. I would get atleast 2 days on Rocket. This was on the older V14 version. eybee has already released v17. For the same amount of usage, CheckRom V3 drains in a day.
If you would like to keep all the samsung apps that come with the stock rom without the hassle of trying to figure out which apps you want and which you don't want, Rocket will be good.
CheckRom has the Samsung apps removed. However you can install them from the Kitchen. I like the Kitchen option in CheckRom. If you are open to customizing your rom a lot, this is a good.
+1 for the [JAN 9][XXKL7][2.3.6][FINAL] CheckROM Revo NoteHD™ V3 its running on Steroids!
+ Kitchen App
+ very smooth with Abyss 3.0
+ lasts more than 2 days on battery with moderate/normal use
