Hi guys, I've been encountering very annoying issue with the Media Scanner in my phone:
My newly added media doesn't appear in the Music app nor my Gallery app. This issue happened especially to all my mp4 videos in my external SD; they didnt appear in the Videos app nor the Gallery app. Now my newly added music doesnt even appear in there as well.
The android.process.media force closes all the time too.
I've tried clearing the Media Storage file in the settings, installed most of the apps that force the media scanner service, but to no avail. I've even cleared all my android data in my internal and external SDs.
Any solutions? Thanks!

I'll try, but I'm skeptical that it will work, I think the problem lies beyond the media scanner service.
:/ Didn't work. I'll try to search around. I suspect one of my media files is crashing the service, as when media scanner is running, the media.process.android will force close a few minutes after.

Indeed! Installed the leaked Jellybean ROM, and everything was ok! The default gallery Media Scanner is troublesome..
Thanks for your help!

So basically when using any of the Jelly Bean roms, my music and pictures on my internal storage are not being scanned to show up in their appropriate apps. I have tried all the solutions I have found on other threads but none of them have worked. I know a few people have this problem and I would appreciate it if someone could help as this is the only problem I am having using the Jelly Bean roms.
Solutions I have tried:
Clearing storage media data
Installing other JB roms
Installing different kernals
Mounting SD and emmc in recovery
Factory/Data reset (all JB roms)
Fix Permissions
I usually don't have any problems I can't fix on my own with my experience with Android over the years, but this is the only problem I can't seem to fix.
Help.

This happens in ICS Roms as well (if you perform a clean install), my guess is that you'll just have to wait it out. The Media Scanner should have started automatically once you've finished setting up your phone. Give it a good 30 minutes to scan your stuff and it should show up. Otherwise, try downloading one of the media scanning apps from market (e.g. "Rescan Media") and see if it does the trick.
I know, it is pretty frustrating.
What I noticed is that picasa/google photos sync fine. Those are the only photo albums that show up in my gallery.
But if you take a picture with the camera that picture will show up. Weirdly enough, downloading a photo from the browser doesn't show up.
I have had no luck with any music. Even adding new music via USB doesn't seem to show up either.
It is the only real thing that's keeping me from using Jelly Bean as my daily. If a month or so passes by and Jelly Bean is still not on the Nexus S, I might just do a full wipe and start from scratch. But fingers crossed that Google can step up and get Jelly Bean working as well as on the Galaxy Nexus.
Those who are having issues - does the media process also eat 100% CPU?
Starting to seem like a common problem across all devices with JB...
While mediascanner going nuts is a long standing problem dating back to at least Froyo - it seems FAR more common in JB.
Turns out Google made some significant changes to mediascanner... It no longer caches a bunch of stuff, which kills performance when scanning.
Even if a directory has no actual media files, or has a .nomedia file, it'll scan the entire goddamned directory. One example is that if you have Parallel Kingdom installed, it will sit on the PK directory for 10-20 minutes!
up... any news? This is the only problem JB gives me...!
i had the same issue and i did backup of all my data to my computer after i format sd partition and now it works normal
See my thread about Media Scanner:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801378
There is definitely something amiss with Media Scanner on JB.
Having exactly the same problem with Elite JB..
is there any solution out there? (I read something about .nomedia file, but I don't really know how to do it)

This is the solution I found. I think from ics apps doesn't get turned off even though you press back button. Thus what's happening is that after rescan media is turned on initially, it scans media. After scan is done app doesn't get shut down thus reopening app just opens the app to its previous state wheb scan was complete.
So what you have to do is hit multitask button, close rescan media app by dragging then re open rescan media. It will open fresh and will scan media.
X-Bean ROM scans my media without problems.

Just a wild guess here....
I have a sensation with the newest CM10 JB beta build. I too was having trouble with seeing images in my gallery. Turned out that their is a problem with ROM Manager....so after i deleted it, ALLLLLL the imaged started popping up in my gallery.
Just something to try......
Follow this guide, it works for me; http://ishan-thecholeric.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/solve-media-scanner-problem-on-your.html?m=1
Install QuickPic to view all the images the gallery doesn't pick up.

Has anyone tried the fix I linked above yet?
It works perfectly for me. It keeps media storage running as normal. It only disables the media scanner service that the problem is coming from. Then simply use 3rd party apps like QuickPic to view all the media instead.
I had the same problem but since I installed JRO03L 4.1.1 BETA 9R2 my problem was solved. I haven't had any problem since then. You can try install this ROM...
follow this :good:
The same for my SGS with CM10 latest nightly.
Pics and music do not show up in stock gallery and music player.
Media scanning service keeps restarting.
I aslo tried every solution in the first post but no effect at all.
3rd party app like QuickPic does the job for me, though I have not found some app to play music...
Other than the problem above and lag caused by google search, Jelly Bean is quite smooth on my phone.
Hope someone find the solution...
A temporary fix:
1. Get Nextapp's FX file explorer.
2. Go to the folders with media in it.
3. Tools, rescan media.
The issue with my phone was camera360. Once I froze all 360 files my media scan worked normally.

After u delete all the 360 files, your media scan worked normally even for music? Not just photos?

Media is media, no matter how small.
Hi in using the SGSII ROM and it's very good all except for one thing. It does not media scan every time u delete or move a file. This causes my pictures to not be loaded on my gallery any help? Thanks in advanced

Hmm...It's not necessary that a media scan should be done every time you delete a file.
The gallery should load your pics just fine.
I'm not sure why this is happening. Please check if you get this bug again!
I too had this problem when I was on the SGSII ROM.
There is an app on Google Play called Rescan Media ROOT which will do the same thing for you. Everytime you need to refresh the Gallery/Music/Videos, use this app.
I find this solution better for the Galaxy Ace, because the Media Scanner is very CPU-intensive.
I'm running ICS and this problem has never happened before. For some unknown reason I've noticed that media storage is always running in the background making the CPU run at max clock all the time, which is killing my battery.
I think it might be unable to scan everything for some reason as quite alot of my photos are missing from my gallery.
Clearing the data of media storage stops it running, but I lose all the photos from the gallery and all notifications. I can use an app called Scanmedia to get all the notifications back, and only some of the photos for some reason. But media storage continues to run in background draining my battery.
Like I said earlier I think it might be a scanning bug. Unable to scan all media, so it doesn't stop scanning. That's just my guess though.
How can I fix this?
I deleted all .nomedia files on my sd card. It hasn't fixed the problem...

Its because you have .nomedia files on some large folders that the media scanner will be busy checking them till its finished, so deleting them will only make it worse.
I think the only way to permanently fix the problem is by re-flashing the rom from scratch.
I managed to find a reasonably good fix anyway. I installed startup manager and disabled storage media. Which only disables the media scanner service and keeps the rest of it running, which is needed for downloading apps from the Play Store, etc.
I also installed QuickPic to be able to find/view all my images and videos. Thanks to the media scanner bug the default gallery could only find a small selection of my images.
What ROM you on cause I had that on ICS 4.0.3

hi, it's strange ..
I am still with LS7, I have not tested yet.
but I had a similar problem with ics, it was infact google music and its cache ..
test reading your duplicate songs with the stock player, if the duplicate song will not open, it is almost certain that it comes from gMUSIC ...
Otherwise, if you're on they are copied to your external sd, have you tried to delete, reboot and see if you still have the problem?
ps: you're not in the right section, here is themes and applications

Yeah. On ICS I had same problem but the duplicate didn't work. But unmounting sdcard and clearing data for media storage solved the problem. But on XXLSA both the duplicate and original are playing just fine.
Edit: I deleted one of the duplicated media files and it rendered the other useless, i.e. the music player could not play it.

I am on lsa and i dont have any such problem
And i even have google music installed
I use Poweramp for my music playing needs, and it works great, but when I open Chrome or Facebook, the system automatically shuts off the music. I hate this, and I have tweaked every possible option in the Poweramp configuration to keep the service alive, but nothing works. I can understand that the device starts shutting down other software when running out of RAM, but I would expect it not to close the media player app.
Does anyone have a fix for this?
The same happens to me with Google play music too. But some times the music playback stops even when I'm not multitasking, meaning I play music and lock screen and listen thru my headsets.
Any thoughts?

Same problem here. Happens with several music players including Poweramp and Shuttle so it's not necessarily a bug within the music players themselves.
This will happen to me even when there is 150-200MB of RAM free, so it seems strange that it feels the need to close these background apps.
I am now rooted with a custom ROM, but this happened even beforehand, I had hoped rooting would help matters, sadly not.
I assume all of your music is on an external SD card? Have you tried playing music from the internal storage?
I have my music in my internal storage only and yet it happened.
For the last two days play back is smooth after I updated to Play Music from Lollipop.☺☺

Strange, I couldn't recreate the problem when playing off internal storage. I will have to try another SD card and see if the problem persists.
-------------------------
I'm fairly sure its an issue with my external SD card. I moved a few albums onto my internal storage and could not recreate the problem despite keep as many high RAM usage apps open as possible.
I switched back to using music on the SD card this morning and it crashed within minutes. All of this has been tested using Poweramp.
I can think of a few things to try and will report back
Try Internal storage - Success! Unable to recreate the problem. However not a brilliant solution as I have only 5GB of usable internal storage.
Accessing over 20GB of music - Try a smaller subset of folders - Problem still occurs.
Using a 64GB SD card, reformatted to FAT32. Try smaller 32GB SD card. - will report back when I have tried this

I will try the free version of that app anyway, just to be sure, thanks.
Pandora and Play Music also stops for me when I launch Clash or Clans but they both keep playing when I launch the Chrome browser and view some pages. All the apps I mentioned are installed on internal memory.
So, for me, any music-playing app (including streaming apps) stops when I launch certain apps but not when I launch other apps.
Also happens for me. A reboot will suppress the problem for quite some time
I am thinking it might really be memory manager problems.

I did experience one single crash while playing music off internal memory, but it happens 10x as often when playing off external SD card, so I guess that's not the only issue here.
If it was purely a memory manager problem, then why does altering the priority of poweramp make no difference to the crashing?

Guys,
This is a memory management problem in moto g.....There is a moto forum post regarding this.. Here is the link https://forums.motorola.com/posts/6168839e0e ..Please make some noise so that they fix it with an update.. This happens not only with music app but also with other background apps...Cant play music while surfing...
Same problem.
Any active music player crashes once I start web browsing. It is very annoying. Please has anyone found a solution. I've tried all possible solutions such as, clearing app cache, wiping dalvik cache from bootloader, reinstalling the music player. Nothing has helped as yet. Also can't really multi task with the phone right now. It seems that any process that is not in focus is stopped in sometime.
Off topic, even asphalt 8 does not run proprlerly, it too crashes in between races. Think it is related to the same issue.
Thanks.

Well if it really is purely a memory manager problem it may be related to another issue I have:
Often, when locked, pressing the power button takes 5-10 for the phone to wake. when it does, I am usually greeted with the "com.android.systemui isn't responding" message.
Anybody else also experiencing this problem? (note: you won't see the message unless you have "Show all ANRs" ticked under Settings->Developer options)

Yes, it happens to me as well. I hope Motorola fixes this.
I guess this might be a stupid question but has anyone tried using ART? I believe the memory management varies between ART and dalvik (although I don't understand the exact differences).
I'll probably try this over the next couple of days in any case to see if there's a noticeable difference.
Looking for solution
I'm on ART and haven't seen any differance.
So I tried freezing some Moto system apps (though it might be bad for the system) to free up some RAM. After that I've installed Auto Memory Manager and tweaked some minfree and OOM settings. So far so good. Tested out Spotify stream in background with Chrome tabs open and switching and taking pictures with the Camera app. Chrome Tabs still refresh when i switch in between but the music still runs in background.
How about you guys?

Hey thanks for the tip. I installed Auto Memory Manager and did some tweaks. I'm using rocker player, I also doubled its buffer and white listed it in auto memory manager. I'm running dalvik, its working better. It still quits but not untill i open more than 4 tabs on chrome and do multi tasking.
Also for any music player, if you swipe it out is recent tasks the music stops. Which never happened it the earlier versions of android.
So try a trick, swipe the music player out of recent tasks and start music from headset button of wedget, then see if the playback stops while browsing, for me it hasen't yet.
If possible please try out and confirm whether it works or not.
OK I tried patching my memory manager to make sure my players don't get killed. It worked, but now chrome gets really laggy when I am using it while playing music. It might be the system causing lots of memory leaks when accessing external SD. I noticed that ES remote manager also gets killed if on background when copying large files to external SD.
Chrome is ofc smooth with material design and stuff, but man it sure uses a heck loads of memory. I'm using Dolphin as default now

This would make a lot of sense since there is a massive difference in the frequency of music player crashes when playing off internal vs external.
Anything we can do about it?
