This was something I am making because despite the answer being out there I had to piece it all together from different sources and people recommending seriously good E-Readers but never really what i was looking for...Being able to use the Kindle App with PDF-MOBI-EPUB. In the end i eventually got it to work so i thought i'd contribute - hopefully it helps someone out. Long process at first but once you get it down you'll have a nice OCD-style Kindle Page on the N7.

So i have (x) format book.(epub azw3, mobi,) and i want to see it on the Nexus 7 - Kindle App. I want metadata, coverart, etc.
Here is how i got it to work.
First i downloaded Calibre
http://calibre-ebook.com/download
Install your OS-based software.
Step 1:
Plug in the Nexus 7 before you open the Calibre Program
Step 2:
This is your library - this is where you Drap & Drop whatever format your book is in.
Step 3:
This is on your device. This shows you what is present already on the Nexus. (basically just to double check or erase duplicates)
Step 4:
Clean up the metadata. Calibre is pretty good with this. If you have the title and the author.(which you can find on Amazon) it should be pretty straight forward. Unless your book is from some far-off land.
Step 5:
This is where you fix all the metadata. DO the title and author. Then down at the bottom Hit the, "Download Metadata" button.
Step 6:
Calibre will find something that looks like this. Has a short summary and the "typed" metadata stuff including the cover art.
Step 7:
Now it's time to convert the book to the proper format. *.mobi.
Step 8:
This is where you need to make sure that the OUTPUT format says .mobi
Step 9:
On the left hand side there is a tab for MOBI Output. Click that. Right in the middle it has a box called Personal Doc tag: Change that to [EBOK] this is so you can email it to your @kindle account.(If you need to for whatever reason this USB trick doesn't work)
Step 10:
Watch it convert
Step 11:
Now here is where you steal the files back from Calibre to put on your Nexus 7. Finally right. You need to left-click>save to disk>save single format to disk...
Step 12:
Select .mobi format
Step 13:
Chose a directory. I always did Desktop. easiest to find and fastest transfer
Step 14:
Should generate a nice file structure. All you need is the 3 files down in the folder
Step 15:
Transfer to Nexus 7. [Nexus 7>internal storage>Kindle> Go ahead just throw them in there. Calibre has made them all the same name except for the file extensions of those 3 files.
Unplug Nexus from CPU.
Power down Nexus
Turn Back on
Open kindle app. Viola. Should be there. If cover art doesn't show up at first open the book. Exit. Should reload it.
Hope this helps.

Fantastic guide.. Thanks for taking out the time for this.... I guess there ain't too many out there who still love reading
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Thanks Burlyirishdude,it works perfectly.
The Calibre software forum is at http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=166. The author of the software makes frequent postings.
There is also an app Calibre Connection http://www.multipie.co.uk/calibre-companion/ that creates a wireless connection with Calibre to make the transfer of ebooks simple
Yes but the point was to bring the whole process of [x format] into [kindle-able] format with proper metadata, cover-art, etc. Rather than doing what you suggest(scouring forums) or I did(scour forums)...I figured I'd give the trial and error step-by-step that worked for me.
However I will say that there are a lot of alternative e-readers out there. Some with better formatting, better organization, etc, etc. Like BMW and Mercedes....different strokes for different folks. The holy grail though is still to be able to side-load, upload, load in general, properly formatted books into Google Play books, but they are a completely different animal. "it's all for that damn-slick page peel"
:good:
Awesome guide. I'll probably be doing this eventually. I've got a nitpick about it though. When you say "Unplug from CPU", you should be saying "Unplug from your computer". CPU is the Central Processing Unit, meaning the brain of your computer.
Thanks for guide but library thing is useless for me. With root explorer I click on open with -> Kindle. PDF, epub etc work perfect
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Yes CPU does mean Central Processing Unit. It was meant to be shorthand for computer....colloquially speaking it's an acceptable abbreviation for computer.

first of all, thank you very much for the guide, really usefull...
however i've got some questions...
i'm using a sony tablet s and i love the kindle app, fast simple and not too heavy, the question is, do i really have to download the metadata at caliber?, i have got a collection of about 100 ebooks already with the mobi format and it has taken me a couple days download the cover and edit the info at the metadata (some books are part of series and have sequential order like hyperion cantos or foundation series), and i dont want to loose the hard work replacing it with the metadata calibre downloads.
anyway thanks again and i hope you can respond
Thanks for this. I just drag and drop the mobi files I want into my "Kindle" folder and that seems to do the job.. but editing the tags will be nice indeed.

It's possible, i have just did, Calibre is quite a dyanamic program, just follow the guide and in the part about metadata skip and edit at you own, it works great if you've got lots of books from the same author
Thanks for the tutorial
Worked great on Nexus 7:good::angel:
Thanks for the tutorial. Aldiko is another ebook reader as well

Hmmm.. That's a really good question. I haven't done any, "series," or, "part [i,ii,iii]" I would say that in the step where you bring up the metadata DON'T download any new metadata(especially if you painstakingly went through yourself and did it) Tread carefully and find the pieces you want to update, then push out the *.Mobi with the new data you've added. I think you'll be ok as long as you don't connect to the Calibre or Amazon servers "requesting" new metadata. I know sometimes the Coverart that is recommended is really really small 150x150, 225x136 etc. and sometimes you can just do an Image search on google and find a nice HQ one right at the top. I know there's a way to import that Coverart to use and not download a new crap low quality, pixelated version.
So long-story short, no you don't have to download metadata from Calibre. In fact if you have the 3 files needed(shown in one of the last images on pg.1) you should essentially be able to drag and drop those into the N7>Kindle folder. Reboot. And they should load.
::EDIT:: Just realized you said Sony Reader. Not sure how the file Structure is on the Sony but essentially the process of getting [X format--->Kindle Format] should follow suit for the sony. I'm assuming the Kindle app/program/api/apk/exe/etc for the Sony Reader follows the same standards and guidelines for importing nicely tagged/bagged books in Kindle on Sony Reader.
This whole process was to show any format could be drilled down, cleaned up, loaded up, and look pimp-pressed-and-proper on the N7 Kindle App.
Hope this helped. Sorry if this was a late response. :good:
im still having problems with this, the files are in the right format and im geting this:
"the file type is not supported on this device, if it is a media file, you may be able to use windows media player to convert the file to a playable type prior to transfer"
any reason for this? im putting the JPEG, MOBI, and OPF file directly into the kindle folder.

Off the top of my head i can only think that maybe in the, "output," of the e-book there was something missing. Make sure in that output you have it set to [EBOK] Let me know what you find.
Also where is it giving you that dialoge box saying "the file type is not supported on this device."? Is it when trying to transfer? Are you transferring straight from Calibre or from Windows Explorer and/or OSX Finder? Or is this error message coming up on the N7?

yeah I did the output just right
im transferring from windows explorer, I go to my computer click on my nexus 7 and drag the files into the kindle folder. I don't know why this is happening and have seen 1 or 2 other people on other forums get the same result. I don't have enough post but if you type in "problem getting epub files on nexus 7" on google, there is a thread with someone on another forum saying they can't get epub or mobi files on their tablet aswell. The only file its taking is the JPEG. I cant post a screen shot right now though since I don't have enough post.
*edit* I don't know if this has anything to do with it but on the calibre program my nexus 7 isn't popping up on device.
also, on your screenshot you transferred your files from [Nexus 7>internal storage>Kindle] while on mine I don't have a internal storage folder and it gos from Nexus 7 straight to Kindle

dumb question, but are you using separate directories for each book? If not you're overwriting files. Also, with the Nook app/readers if you have a strange character in your filename you will sometimes receive errors that prevent the opening of the book. Filenames on the nook containing the "#" sign result in errors. Your error could be something similar.
Ideally, and this is just me, under the Kindle(Nook) app you should have a directory for your sideloaded books and inside that directory you should have a separate directory for each and every book that you have loaded.
You can also email the books to your Amazon account from within Calibre itself then books will show off in Kindle app under archive. This way you can turn on whisper sync and then read books on many different devices and it sync the process for you.

My findings and fixes on the Desire HD ROM by IncredibleDoes with fixes maintained as they're collected from the community to help those with issues as well as provide those with information whom might be interested and are "on the fence".
After having run v0.2.1 but unable to get MMS working I decided to wait. While v0.3.0 or v0.3.1 does not fix MMS, there is a procedure that does fix the issue (listed below). I did not have my sdcard formated with an A2SD sd-ext partition and was awaiting IncredibleDroid's completion of v0.3.1 which does not require an sd-ext partition. However, after it was completed, many reported that they had no signal and a few other major issues. I had already backed up my sdcard and created an sd-ext partition but was hoping I could use the non-sd-ext v0.3.1 but with the issues posted regarding the v0.3.1 build, I decided to stick with the original v0.3.1 build that required the sd-ext partitioned sdcard and suggest you do too at this point.
First let me start with a big thanks to IncredibleDoes and a link to his main thread for you to get the latest updates and other information: IncDoes Sense "Desire HD"
Remember, a FULL wipe of data & cache is required.
So if you've skipped this process...start over rather than post any issues you may have.
Device Setup
My device info:
HBOOT v0.92
Radio 2.15.00.07.28
First, some have asked if having their sdcard formatted FAT32 was sd-ext - the answer is no.
Second, if you get the following error message:
Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 (file exists) 3 times, then
Can't mount SDEXT:
Failure at line 12:
copy_dir PACKAGE:ext SDEXT:
Installation aborted
Then you need to create an sd-ext partition.
Creating a sd-ext partition:
I tried to use the SD Partition option in ROM Manager but it did not work. It was suggested by ID to use Amon_RA's recovery image which was actually a very simple process.
NOTE: Unlike many downloads, you will actually need to read & follow the instructions properly. This is an actual .zip archive that you will need to extract the PB31IMG.ZIP image and place on the root of your sdcard, not simply rename it.
Once you boot into the Amon_RA recovery you should create a 512MB sd-ext partition and a 32MB swap file. You will need to select the SD:ext2 to ext3 option, then SD:ext3 to ext4 option to create the properly formatted sd-ext partition.
There is a link posted to an Android and Me article that shows how to do it via a command line but that's by far taking a more difficult approach.
The Amon_RA recovery is quite nice but if you have neen using the ClockworkMod recovery and want to flash back to the ClockworkMod recovery, the PB31IMG.ZIP ClockworkMod image can be found here "http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever" near the very bottom.
My Review
Three second boot:
I find this has been highly over rated. Since the phone is not completely shut down, it is not actually booting up. A restart or battery pull will provide you with the same boot speed that you are used to seeing.
Since the Shutdown option does not actually shut the phone down, people are complaining about having to do battery pulls to get back into HBOOT. While ROM Manager will reboot into Recovery, HBOOT is a different story. The way I have found to do this is to long press on the power button and select Restart. Once the lighted buttons below your screen goes out, press and hold the volume down button to boot into HBOOT.
MMS fix:
Use the provided files by es0tericcha0s but after installing APN Backup & Restore you need to delete the APN settings from the ROM before you restore the provided backup .xml file. This will fix the MMS issue in v0.3.0 (and possibly other build versions if broken).
Credit to es0tericcha0s for the post & files and to pd240 whom pointed out that the APN settings needed to be deleted before you restore the .xml file. Thanks!
Battery life:
In originally writing this yesterday (before the digital gremlins hit XDA), I had made a 1.5hr phone call using BT, downloaded just under 500MB of data over Wi-Fi for the Locations app (more info on that below), sent/received about 30 SMS messages, received about a half dozen e-mails, browsed the Web for awhile, watched a couple YouTube videos, streamed music over Y! Music & Slacker to test (but not for very long) and had GPS on for a bit. While I've seen several people complain of battery use, I did not see poor battery issues and was quite surprised since the 500MB download itself took well over an hour.
Call screen & Phone:
While broken in v0.2.1, as stated in the ROM's OP, these work 100% as expected in v0.3.0. Tone sounds for voicemail etc. work properly...all issues in this area are fixed. I believe that I read there were some issues with v0.3.1 however but I am not sure as I don't recommend that version anyway.
Camera & Camcorder:
Still broken as ID's OP states however it is different in v0.3.0 than it was in v0.2.1. In v0.2.1 the app would launch then quit back to Sense. In v0.3.0 it launches to a black screen and does not quit back to Sense and the back button does nothing. After pressing the Home button I used Astro's Tools to kill the Camera process and have since not futzed with the camera.
Chrome to Phone:
With many ROM's I have had trouble getting this to work and this was no exception. I figured out last nigh that even though I had played the Disconnect, uninstall, reinstall C2P game over & over without any success as well as logging out and back in with the extension in Chrome (Mac version) I had finally found the issue. Once I uninstalled the Chrome C2P extension, restarted Chrome and reinstalled the C2P extension and logged back in via Chrome, my phone was flooded with link notifications! All along I thought it was a device issue.
Date format:
I've seen people asking if the Calendar app states the actual day in the Agenda & Day views rather than just the date. The answer reported was no. This is not entirely correct. The date format set in the System Settings is a global setting. Whatever you choose is used for the lock screen, notification bar, clock widget as well as the Calendar app. Kind of odd but there you go!
Notifications:
With all of the ROM's I've run, none (even the 2.2 OTA) provided proper SMS, FeedR etc. "unread" counts. This new version of Sense does which is nice.
Also, for those not aware, recen apps are now listed along the top of the notifications panel in a sliding ribbon once dropped down. Could be useful if you remember that they're there.
Connected Media:
This is a cool central hub for the media (music, photos & videos) on you device as well as that which is "connected" to your device (e.g., via your Wi-Fi connection). In v0.2.1 this worked very well and was the only media app I used since it launches the required Gallery, Music & Video's apps as needed. Something cool I noticed is that it saw my DirecTV HD receiver. Now, there was nothing it was able to play on it but it makes me wonder if one had Hulu or Netflix setup through an Xbox 360 or Windows box, could it possibly stream that content? I don't have any of that setup to test but kind of looks promising.
UPDATE 9/26
via dgourd
Just to help clarify:
This is a DLNA addition to the phone, so it can basically communicate with any other DLNA device. I can confirm that it works since I have a Windows Home Server in my house which supports DLNA. My Incredible can find all my music and videos. It will only display files it supports though. For example, it can play all my mp3 songs and mp4 videos, put my mkv videos are unplayable since it is not natively supported.
Click to collapse
Unfortunately, there are some things that work differently in v0.3.0 with the Connected Media app. The photos aren't able to view full screen without first looking at a photo that was in a linked Facebook album. Once a photo was looked at in a Facebook album, photos on my device would display when the thumbnail was tapped. However, quitting the app would force you to go through the same steps again (this applied to videos too).
In addition, if there wasn't an sdcard installed, the app cannot see any media even if it's stored within the device itself. I do not know if this applies to the individual apps themselves (too lazy to bother at this point).
HTC Hub:
This is a cool idea from HTC that with an HTCSense.com account allows you to preview and download many items for your device. Everything from Skins (themes), Widgets, single Sounds and even full Sound Sets that you can listen to before you bother to download them. Pretty nice.
HTC Likes:
Access to apps that other HTCSense.com users can comment as well as "Like" (think of Facebook's "Like" button). There are recommended apps as well and this should rally take off once HTCSense.com launches!
Locations:
While I have no use for it, people were asking about this app so I gave it a shot. As I launched the app it wanted to download maps before it would work. The maps it wanted were just under 500MB (as stated above). After downloading the maps, there were several categories displayed as one would expect (gas stations, restaurants etc.) but selecting these provided a "no locations found" message then prompted to tell me that I needed to download updated maps (WTF?). The maps for the Western U.S. were over 800MB and I did not bother so I cannot go any further with how this app works...sorry.
Market:
I think it was a CM6 ROM I had installed that asked if I wanted Google to keep track of my data & settings that I answered yes to. This new ROM does the same and something nice was that after installing the ROM, all of my apps were automatically downloaded for me. Very nice! Now, since I had installed v0.2.1, I had already setup my System Settings, these too were restored during the v0.3.0 ROM install (but not any app settings).
The Verizon tab is replaced with a "Downloads" tab and many Verizon apps are not available for download (NFL couldn't be found, nor Skype, My Verizon etc.). Kind of a bummer for some.
Quick Lookup:
This is a cool app that will lookup what you've typed in the search box. Sure, sounds boring but, you select from where it searches from the ribbon at the bottom. Your choices are: Wikipedia, Google, YouTube, Translate and Google Dictionary.
Quadrant:
For those interested in Quadrant scores...first run 1108 second run 1168.
Streaming Audio:
As mentioned above, both Y! Music and Slacker streamed just fine through the external speaker. I was told that Slacker sounded tinny using headsets but I did not confirm this.
Web Browser:
Looks a bit more polished. Using Wi-Fi YouTube videos played smoothly (unlike the YouTube app below). There's a new checkbox setting for animated .gif files which is unchecked (off) by default. I did notice in the 2.2 OTA that animated .gif's do play now, I guess this simply lets you choose to turn them on or off for speed. If you pinch the window down, it gets displayed just as though you selected Windows from the Menu button which is handy if you're in the habit of using multiple windows (which I'm not).
YouTube:
The YouTube app is broken in so far as you cannot log into your account. When you try, after selecting your account from the popup, the app just sits there and you're unable to do anything without hitting the back button. I tried this both over 3G and Wi-Fi with the same results. Also, when choosing an HQ video from my YouTube Favorites from the main site it was very choppy & not worth watching (unlike in the browser above but that was at 360 not HD). None the less, the Gymkhana THREE Part 2 video that's at the top of the YouTube app currently plays just fine in HD so other than the inability to login, I'm confused why some HD plays and others do not (but do on the 2.2 OTA).
Well, there you have it. After a second write-up (now over 8 hours of time spent) I hope this is of some use to the community. Since it was suggested I create a thread for this so that the information did not get lost in the main ROM thread I think it will be useful. If there's something other than trying different kernels or over-clocking that you would like me to try & add, please let me know. I will keep this updated as best as possible.

i had a weird issue, one specific to this rom, and it ended up being the deal breaker for me
i have a california phone number, but recently moved to the midwest. on EVERY other rom ive used, across two different phones, this hasnt caused an issue, my messages and clls all read the right time. however on this one, my recieved texts messages were reading as california time. since the messaging app uses conversation style messaging, i would have to scroll up through two hours of my texts to find a text that i just recieved.
it was insanely annoying. that coupled with the camera killed it for me. i dont use the camera much, but the two in conjunction were just too much.
i tried pushing the old htc messaging app and using that, but no cigar.
the verizon tab issue can be fixed easily with some build.prop mods btw. im not familiar enough with the INC yet to give you the changes off the top of my head, but with the eris, the issue was solved by editing the ro.product.name and ro.product.device i believe
Just need camera to work and it will be perfect! Already is the best Rom for me

I wonder if doing a *228 option 2 would help by setting the proper local tower info for your phone? Have you tried this? I know ID said this was a GSM ROM which confuses me that it works at all (at least from my BB days) but I guess it's quite an apples & oranges comparison for Android OS to BB OS.

I just wanted to say thank you for writing this review. It is a process to go create a EXT4 partition on an SDCard so I have been hesitant. This is well written and I really hope you take it upon yourself to write more reviews about new roms in the future. I think I might have to check out the next version of this Desire HD rom when he releases it. I can't wait for this to officially show up on our Incredibles in the future and get optimized to our liking by some of these guys.

Thanks!
The partitioning after reading the command line process was a no go for me. While I would have no trouble doing it, it was just too much work. The fact that ROM Manager was failing was a bummer too but the steps I took were very simple. Being that I had 10GB on my 32GB sdcard was the most time consuming portion (about 20 minutes to back it up from an adapter & an hour to re-write the data). Partitioning was/is pretty easy.
Also, now that the ROM is in ROM Manager, that should be helpful too (even though it's a tad under 200MB).

I wasn't taken to a premium option, just a simple menu selection of map locations (World wide). Being basically homebound, an additional 800MB+ was just kind of silly.

Great write-up. ID has done a very nice job porting this rom.

I know this is a review about the Rom itself, but what about including reviews of optional kernels that work the best. Such as Kings #5 or Hydra etc

[Android 2.2+][Windows Client] FilePush - "push" files from your PC to your device

FilePush lets you transfer files to your Android device with only two clicks. With the Windows Client you can create context menu entries that appear when you right-click a file inside Windows Explorer. With a click on the "Push file to device" entry the file will appear a few seconds later as a download on your device. It works much like Chrome2Phone just for files.
There is a paid version that costs $1.2 and a free trial that has all the features but lasts only for 14 days.
Paid $1.2
Free Trial
Windows Client (direct download)
Officially supported is Windows Vista, 7 and 8
WLAN transfer
It's faster but can obviously only be used if your PC is connected to the same Wireless Network as your Android device. A internet connection is still required on both the device and the PC as the transfer gets initiated by a Google Push message.
Google Drive Transfer
The file gets uploaded onto your Google Drive first and will then be downloaded onto the device. It's slower but should work anywhere with an internet connection.
Something that's probably a concern for a lot of people: Your Google password isn't stored anywhere, locally or on a server. It uses OAuth and you only have to login with your Google Account the first time you launch the Windows application.

There are a few differences. Once you have FilePush set up you don't have to do anything else than just click files and they are on your phone. It doesn't always have to run in the background because it uses push messages to initiate the file transfer. With Wifi Transfer Pro for example you have to launch the app on the phone, enable the small http server and type the IP (that could be different every time) inside the browser. This doesn't seem like a lot of work but if you just want to send one or two files at a random time of the day with FilePush you can just click it and don't have to worry about it anymore.

1. Phone to Computer is an often suggested feature but technically hard to accomplish to make it user friendly, but I'm working on it
2. Transfer of folders is also something that I want to do but has some downsides as I would have to zip all the files and unzip them on the phone again
3. It already works over 3G if you use Google Drive to transfer the files
Btw. tonight I released a update for both the Android app and the windows client:
Android version 1.1.3:
» Added option to redownload a file
» Added Jelly Bean Notifications with Buttons
» Migrated to the new Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) Service
Windows version 1.0.0.5:
» Changes for the new Google Cloud Messaging Service
» Fixed a crash that could occur when using Google Drive

First off, thanks for getting the full version!
Did you login with the same Google account on the windows client as you registered your device with?
Did you press "Refresh" inside the preference window of the windows client? You can bring that screen up by right clicking the FilePush Icon within the taskbar and then clicking "Preferences".
Thanks!

What's calibre?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Its an ebook reader manager program
I use Mantano Reader (the only one I found that actually renders books properly - the rest are all trash) and setup its feed to read Calibre's OPDS catalog, then download epubs over Wifi. Simply go to 'My bookstores' and click the icon on the right under 'My feeds' to add a new feed. Give it a name, then type in
Code:
<ip address of PC on your LAN>:8080/opds
as the url. Go to Calibre's preferences and click 'Sharing over the net', then 'Start Server' and boom you can browse your entire Calibre catalog on your Nexus 7, ordered any way you like (Author, title, series, tags, etc) - no need to plug it in and sync.
Other ereader programs like Moon+ Reader, Aldiko and FBReader will also support opds.
I just output my epubs to disk (harddrive) and copy them to the Nexus 7. It'd be nice if calibre supported MTP or made it easier.
I have my calibre attach to my drop box, since books don't take up a lot of storage space. Epub format ONLY. I just download book i read with drop box. incase you didnt wanna load all your books.

This is what I do. I had a mare trying to get Calibre to recognise my Nexi. Two days I tried for. If anyone manages it please post here. The next joy was trying to get Aldiko to display my book covers.
I just use the web interface (OPDS) with any relevant eReader (Moon+ and FBReader both work fine with it). That works just fine.

I've just changed my copy of Calibre from a Sony ereader to a smartphone and it works. Are you sure your USB drivers are installed and working? - If you open Windows Explorer you should see "Nexus" in the same section as your hard drives, cd etc.and if you click on Nexus you should see Internal Memory and clicking again shows the folders you can access.
For the official USB drivers go to http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=Nexus%207&p=20&s=16

I have been having the same problem with my Nexus 7. My solution was to export my epub ebooks from Dropbox to the B&N Nook android app.
It works one book at a time but is kind of cludgy plus it requires the extra step of putting epubs in Dropbox. Your solution is much slicker. I tried it with the free version of Mantano. I plan to upgrade to the premium version. Thanks for providing a nice solution. :victory:

Calibre does not support MTP and will only sync to devces that mount as 'usb storage' - i.e., not Nexus devices...from what i've read the developer doesn't plan on changing this
if you have a large library copy all your books to a folder on your N7, then use your N7's ereader app to import the books...after the initial set up new books would need to be added one by one...if you rely on tags and don't want your tags messed with, do NOT use Aldiko...i tested most ereader apps some time ago and Mantano and Moon+ were the only ones which read calibre tags properly and did not add anything...i stuck with Moon+ as it can sync my reading status across multiple books (syncs to Dropbox) so no matter which device i open a book with i can go to the last page read
also, as an alternative to the previously mentioned opds setup which is only accessible if you are on your home wifi, if you want to view your library from any browser and download to your device wherever you have an internet connection (or just share your library with your mates), you can set up a No-IP account...with that, the No-IP DUC client, your Calibre library located within a public folder in Dropox, you can host your own books as a 'net library' directly accessible from within Moon+ as well as via a standard url (eg, http://name.no-ip.org:1234)...this setup is simply PERFECTION!

Something to be careful about: Looks like Dropbox is getting pissy about publicly-accessible libraries. So if you do this, don't go telling people about it.

Chances of that depend on how many mates you have, I suppose... Calibre2opds's html layer does increase the visibility, but it's pretty trivial these days to do a blind scan for open opds catalogs. You just need to be aware of the dangers.
Thanks For the tips everyone. Will give it another go tonight. I have moon+pro

Ok. the topic title was a little confusing even for me. I appoligize. I have a brand new kindle fire hd 8.9. Rooted it yesterday with a few hitches but those were mostly due to my own silly mistakes. Regardless, i got it up and running but have ran into a sort of problem. The way to access books, by how I know it, is though Kindle Home 'app'. Which takes me to the original screen with the carousel and everything. But that seems like a really round about way to access everything. Is there a way/app/etc to choose specific books to simply add to the main screen? (I'm using GO HD, but have been checking both to see which I prefer) It just seems a bit silly to need to go through hoops rather then be able to add 'Books, Docs, etc' as seperate things on the main screen. Or even just add a specific book itself. I was asking simply cause it makes it easier/faster to access textbooks like this.
If its impossible thats fine too, but I'm new to this all and can't seem to find anything of this sort. Hope its not too dumb a question.
There isn't an application in KFHD to go directly to Books, but curiously there is a Documents path. I think it is because the DRM(protection) that almost all Amazon books have. You can convert your own books to Movi with a PC or Linux program called Calibre(whisper: "even unprotect them")) to make them visible in the Book shelf.
But if you want them to be more accessible and better reading, you can go to Cool Reader, an app that lets you configure all aspects of a book presentation, much better than Kindle. Inside Cool Reader there is a directory browser to find the books wherever they are, The worse is that it can't read DRM protected books, but I've whispered you the program to jump that fence(search google "how to remove DRM from Amazon". You have the right to do it if you have paid money for the book....But not all countries allow that.

unspunreality,
Absolutely, you can view just about any document on the Kindle. If I understand you correctly, you would like to have direct access to books from your main desktop, is that correct? Kind of like a Windows or Linux desktop where you are able to place documents and shortcuts to documents directly on the desktop.
If you are looking for software, the following are what we consider the top 5 document readers for the Kindle Fire HD Series:
1. Google Docs
2. Quickoffice Pro
3. Olive Office Premium
4. Camscanner - PDF Creator
5. Openoffice Document Reader
The original Kindle Carousel stores the history of open documents through the carousel which are stored in the order of last opened.
The after market launchers allow you to place anything on the main desktop by long pressing the document and then moving to the desktop.
You are also able to create what are called 'containers' on the desktop, these are really just folders created on the desktop. You can download and install a File Manager like ES File Explorer or Root Explorer which both allow you to create symbolic links or 'shortcuts' from within the application.
Finally, you can also install the Dropbox or Google Drive application on your Kindle and on your office PC, then create shortcuts to the document folders on each network drive - this option allows seamless integration between your Kindle desktop and your office/home PC desktop.
Does this answer your question or did I misunderstand your question?
My favorite reader is ebookdroid. If you go in an tweak the performance settings to use all your cores and prerender pages it is significantly quicker than any other reader I've tried. Plus It'll scan directories and add them to your shelf.

You can shortcut to documents using a FM app like Astro. You can also use this to create shortcuts to books as well if you have root access, i think.
Something ive noticed is that if you open a book in the sdcard/books folder using es explorer and choose the kindle app, the kindle app will open fine. If you do this once when you first boot, suddenly the kindle app opens from the app drawer when you try it. Ive only tested this using Nova Launcher Prime but it should work in other launchers. Now all we need to do is create a script that opens and closes a book during boot, this should then allow the kindle books app to be accessed from any launcher instead of using the current approach of going through the 'Home' Launcher.

Katalystik,
We have been looking around for people who can recommend features and you just gave us a great idea for our software. Are you interested in a Startup Manger? We could integarte this feature into our software Kindle Fire First Aide. What I mean by a Startup Manger is an program that would allow you to setup a scenario that would in turn design a script and insert it to the proper location. So, it would work like this, on Monday Wednesday and Friday open a book named "Upon Awakening" or open the book after 8am if the tablet has been left on. Is this the idea you had in mind? This would be very easy a very easy program to write.
Any other ideas or features you would like to see on the Kindle?
Katalystik:
Your approach returns to the last book open, it not lets you to search from there in the book shelf (the Books application). Even so it is a good trick, but appropriate only for a single owner, not for the Kindle shared with the whole family, each with their own book to read ...
There is not need to open the book from ES Explorer nor resetting the Kindle, only open a book from the Books application and press house. Press the "Amazon Kindle" icon and then you are back.
This happens because if you press the house button the app(any app) then waits silently in the background. On the other side, if you press back it obviously returns to the program you were coming. But programs left open in the background consume memory and resources...
Amazon has provided short cuts for all the free aspects of the Kindle, but not for the book shelf, that is not simply a folder. If you copy a DRM book to the Documents folder it don't work. And there Amazon knows good who are his enemies: epubs.
Correction: If you open a DRM book (prc) or mobi from other folder than Books with ES Explorer, it works fine with Kindle app.
I've learned the proper way to go directly to read a particular book! My launcher is ADW but I think it can serve for others.
It is simple and always has been there: In ES Explorer put your finger on the file you want and keep it until it opens a long list of options. Slide it down and find "short-cut" and press on it.
Then, when you return to the main screen of your launcher you'll notice a new icon. press it and select the application that will open, but do not forget to mark the square to open it always with the same program.
Then you can create a folder to put them all in, but that step is different for each launcher and you have to investigate it.
Thanks for the replies. Havent been around. Got class now but with all these options Im certain Ill find something nice to use. Using the kindle books app felt so.. ugh, wrong and backwards. Im glad to be told that I have a lot more options now though.

Sent Using My Rooted Kindle Fire HD 7"
Hi,
As an owner of NGT I've decided to start programming in java and android API. Let me introduce my first project.
As I rooted my device I was missing Library launcher, ralaunch was fine but I was looking for shelves supporting launcher, epub launcher was nice but limited. So, I decided to fill the gap. I was inspired by nook library, which I think was very well designed.
For now it's in alpha stage and for easier developing it's as application, in future I'll make it as a launcher.
So, here are the screen-shots of actual developing state:

}
I'm using Calibre and its meta attributes:
<meta content="shelf name" name="calibre:series"/>
<meta content="1" name="calibre:series_index"/>
calibre:series_index is treated as integer, not as a float so if you have it as float, let me know.
Please let me know what you think about it. Let me know which features or ideas you wished to have in this app.
If anybody could contribute pictograms icons which will fit better, let me know.
---- uploaded first pre-alpha version of app ---
v0.1 - limitations:
scanning of ebooks is limited only to whole /sdcard/, no internal memory is scanned,
file browser don't remember locations, always start from root,
file browser don't have a bookmarks yet,
epub file's attribute "calibre:series" is treated as integer value, so 1.5 is 2, 1.4 is 1. Anybody uses fractions on this attribute?
sorting is done on re-run of app or on refreshing library, to be fixed,
for now, only epub filetype is handled,
searching doesn't work,
no preferences yet
v0.2
fixed adding of shelves
fixed scanning of whole /sdcard/
v0.3
added working bookmarks
added root access in manifest (in future will be used in "my file" browser to get access to blocked paths)
some general fixes
Let me know what you think about it.
Cheers

Looks great - thanks! For future versions, I'd love to be able to do a dual-sort starting with genre tag so you could show shelves by tag then by series (so you could just see your SciFi series for example) or tag then by author etc. Thanks for the good work.

Due to some manifest changes in code which fail to run I must upload again to have it working
Cheers.
I'm extremely impressed, especially considering that you said you have just started programming. Very good start sir!:beer:

Thanks, I've learned C/++ for years, so learning Java was quite easy. The biggest problem was Android API, which is complex, especially API 7 which lacks many features.
Good work! I like the way this library app opens AlReader by default and allows the standard Nook library to open the stock reader by default. I have one feature request. As many of the third party readers will open .mobi files as well as .epub, can this library be modified to use both? My practice is to have my non-DRM books in .mobi format to open with AlReader so that they do not even show up in the stock library app which I use for B&N content only. I find this a effective way to separate the two different forms of content.

Hi, I plan to add mobi/pdf/epub only the question is how to handle this, altogether or separate in tabs.
Beside I'll add scan paths. So, for mobi we could set one dir and exclude it from scanning.

Actually, for my purposes, there is no need to separate .epub and .mobi. Your app will not be able to read B/N DRMed epubs anyway. For me, if it just picked up .mobi files when it does a library scan and displayed then alongside DRM free epubs, that would be fine.
Again, thanks for the great work on this.

I really like the app, but it can't seem to get it to work properly. I only get three or four shelves to start and I can set the view to all to see all my ebook files. This view shows all of the books but without an authors name, shows null null. Hitting the refresh button the app rescans the device and shows all the authors on the books. Switching the view to shelves does not carry over, hitting the refresh button does not change the shelves shown. Going throughout the option menu to delete data and then rescan does nothing as well. Any ideas? Can post the debug if needed
Also for future dev adding the file types cbr/Cbz for comic books would be awesome. Showing them inline with other shelves or on a separate tab would be cool
Hi
I was oo for a while. Could you PM me debug, I'll look for it. Strenge, as ebook should be readed all the time the same way.
sorry about the two seperate pms but the first is what it normally looks like and the second is when i rescan files in the all files view.
Feature request. Sync with google play books or any other service that have upload and page sync. I want to be able to upload books on my phone and sync over to nook.
Hi, I'll look how that could be achieved. I had a plan to make my own build of reader with sources and add reading with last page shown in library app.

This app is exactly what I have been looking for. However, I installed it on my NST and have similar issues as above. Also when I try to assign books to a shelf it will add some but not all that I have selected and will add some random books as well.
I hope the developer keeps working on this app.
