Hey all
I have been so frustrated with the camera on this phone as it takes barely passable photos in daylight but low light its almost impossible to take photos that are focusd and aren't full of noise. The HDR shot is quite good but nothing special.
Also the photos are a little zoomed in and squashed down if compared against objects you've take the pic of.
So i searched around and came across Lg camera in the market.
It has a free version which seems fully featured which bugs you for purchasing it every now and again. The aspect ratio of the pics is correct and tt takes excellent low light shots especially with flash on and has less noise and focuses perfectly.
Just thought I'd share it see what people thought.
Cheers.
Tried it. Didn't notice a difference. Tried camera zoom fx and all three took the same photo. The autofocus algorithms on this phone are horrible.

Sorry to say but its totally different pics on mine to stock camera. If you cant see the difference then maybe there's a fault on your phones because lg camera is perfect for me in low light and has no focusing issues at all even in a pitch black room with flash on.
You can also set infinity focus which eliminates all need to focus at all so for me lg camera fixes the problem
Also the aspect ratios in the photos on stock camera are totally different when compared to lg camera so maybe you need to compare the pictures side by side. Lg camera is true to the scene, Google camera squashes everything down. Also the Google camera is zoomed in further than lg camera.
My phone has no focusing issues with this app now.
Camera zoom fx isn't really a camera app more of a toy but anyway hope it helps someone as its sorted the camera form me and I'm very picky.
Ill update the thread with comparisons over the weekend to highlight the difference between the two cameras

Please do!
I tried lgCamera as well as other camera apps and saw no significant difference.
There are several aspects to the bad pictures problem.
- One is the limitations of the camera module which no app can fix.
- Then there's camera calibration. The LG Optimus 4X HD has the same camera module
but produces photos with less noise. There's room for improvement here but it is most
likely going to happen with a firmware update.
- Proper metering and scene evaluation will no doubt increase the picture quality.
Manual control is one avenue to peruse this but I haven't come across and app that
gives exclusive control over ISO and shutter speed. Some apps let you select one and
then automatically adjust the other.
Check out Camera FV-5.

because you cant see anything that means your phone must be faulty!
The camera app itself doesn't really matter.
All the actual focusing/picture taking/etc is done by the kernel module. There is a userspace driver which translate commands from the camera API (its just ends up being a string that defines parameters in plan text) and based off of that it tells the kernel module to make those changes/perform those actions. It even defines the jpg compression quality and whatnot, so there isnt much the actual app itself does.

Level of compression certainly is set by the app. My FV-5 files are twice the size at the same resolution.

The camera app *suggests* the compression it would like, it doesn't do the compression itself. The userspace module instructs the camera kernel module to do the compression, and the build in DSP in the Qualcomm chip does the actual compression.

Howdy! I've got this phone for 3 days now. One of the main reasons to choose this one, is the camera. It should give stunning pictures, right? Wrong.
I can't for the love of me get even one good picture. Each and every one is either out of focus, distorted in some way, or it looks like there's not enough light (even when the picture is taken outside).
I started out with the automatic mode. What I dislike there, is that it never chooses the max. resolution. Manual mode, I can't get it to make good pictures either; though that might be because of lack of expertise.
Is my device broken? Am I doing something wrong? Help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I'm currently on the newest firmware. I'm running RomAur v3.2. I had the same problem on a different modified stock ROM of the latest firmware build.
I only know for good light condition, you set the ISO to as low as possible and 20mp manual and need a pair of steady hands. I still havent figure out low light condition, some ppl suggest twilight mode.
1. manual mode. the automode is bull****
2. fullsize. you can resize after the shooting^^
3. let the iso as low as possible. remember that the image becomes a little brighter than in the preview. use flash if its dark
i dont have any problems with the camera, even if taking pictures of moving obejcts in dark conditions. just stop shaking your hands and geht the iso lower^^

This is with bad lighting (Sun was shining at the cam), a view from my window. Is this the quality I should expect from this phonecam?
Inside, it's never sharp. There simply seems to be too little light to make sharp pictures. The flash does nearly nothing. The low ISO setting makes it lag very much as well, reducing the screen fps to 3 or something like that. I guess it's difficult for the device to keep up.

1) Pro Capture: More details. Sharper pictures. aiding grid to get great shots. (but you can't manage ISO level and the max resolution is 8MPX)

Mmm, can you explain me better auto mode? Do you selected a scene? Do you select single focus point or multi point?
Metering? (Can you explain this)
HDR or image stabilizer?
Do you use the hardware button to take pictures or the software one? I noticed that using the hw one after you press focus and then more to shoot produce a little movement that can make your photo bad. Am I the only one that find the camera button too hard?

I've read some really good reviews for the camera zoom fx app, has anyone used this on their Z1 or similar camera apps from the play store.

I have tried all (decent) camera apps out there, camera fx, camera pro, fv5, motorola camera, kitkat camera and so on... all of them are worse than stock, I mean you can tweak some settings exposure stuff like that (on some of them) but the stock camera in high lights captures the best shots of all camera apps (and 95% better than manual too), when it's cloudy or lights aren't high switch to manual, no setting, no scene, no hdr, no steady shot, nothing. If the picture is too exposed I suggest to use the native resolution 20mp 4:3 which result in a bit darker photo. In low lights, or night ... ATM forget about that I'm unable (unless maybe you have patience and a tripod) to capture nice shots.
When you use the stock camera in auto please keep an eye on bottom right and before each shot check if it detects the correct scene, if not change angle if you don't want then switch to manual (with settings said before). Remember that we don't have OIS (optical image stabilizer) but a software one, which IMHO currently is a lie, so keep your hands steady as a brick.
Probably wait and see what the 4.3 update will bring to the camera before even spending money on buying anything.

I found the LG camera app to be excellent. It's taking some great shots on my Z1. Mind you, I'm no photo expert so I could be wrong but I just did a compare with some 20mp shots on the manual mode with stock cam and the 20mp shots with the LG app. Found the LG app much better as I can't be bothered with tweaking settings. Most shots I take need to be completed within 2-3 secs. I also tried FXcameraZoom and wasn't too happy with it.

after several tests Pro Capture is my favourite camera app
faster, more precise and better focus than stock

It seems you have missed the idea of the app. It's called MANUAL CAMERA!
You don't change "quality" settings. You don't have HDR mode. Those are AUTOMATIC modes. This is a MANUAL application that allows you to adjust MANUAL settings like ISO, Shutter Speed, Over/Under exposure, white balance, etc. If you want all the "programmed" or "automatic" settings that come in the camera app, then use the camera app!
And if your shutter rate is slow, it's because you have a SLOW SHUTTER SPEED selected!!!!
Complaining about an app that is doing what it's supposed to do, is epitome if stupidity!
ARGH!!!!!!!

My sense is there are some very serious issue preventing slo-mo. That is, slo-mo you want to share because it would be close to garbage as it stands.
I shoot video frequently and was very unhappy when I got my N6.
- signal to noise (S/N) is not good on this device at this stage of the game. It simply is noisy, and it is correctable in software. Until then, slo-mo will be very nasty if anyone is brave enough to try to encode it.
- exposure compensation in video mode is poor - if you shoot a video of a person sitting in front of a blank wall (or a sky) and slowly pan up and down - you can see the exposure compensation "clicking" in stairstep manner as the device adjusts to brightness changes. It needs to be silky smooth or video looks like crap. It can be corrected in software.
- you can workaround the exposure issue by using a third party app which locks exposure compensation - but shooting video with locked exposure compensation is not a good solution.
my opinions.
@warriorpluto I couldn't agree more...I was hoping that there be at least a working port of maybe lenovo, sense 6 camera,z2 or z3 camera...maybe when more devices get lollipop well be able to enjoy the nexus camera...but I suppose for now the google camera shall do for now lol smh

Manual Camera just came out a few weeks ago, but it's by far been the best for me (a camera junkie).
It's best used if you're used to the settings on a DSLR, but has an awesome auto setting and the fastest auto-focus i've seen yet on the N6.
So is the best camera app "Camera FV-5" with Cinema FV-5?
Just cleaned up in here. You guys can take the political debate to a different forum, please. I have absolutely no idea why this subject got brought up in camera thread (actually I do, but I'll deal with the certain member(s))......on a development site.
No need to discuss what I just cleaned in here. Please keep it on topic.

I liked the Manual Camera, but there is no option for video mode and front camera mode..
Background
Like most people out there, I've suffered with terrible camera results on Cyanogenmod 11 and 12: blurry, unfocused images, terrible resolution. I tried most of the alternative camera apps (including A Better Camera, etc) and they had horrible results. Cyanogenmod could not integrate TW, so there wasn't a way to get results as good as stock.
Solution
The solution I stumbled upon is Snap Camera . In an attempt to make a fair comparison, I always set equivalent settings on each app: (autofocus, HDR off, 16mp photo).
1. It produces astonishingly sharper and more attractive images than Google Camera on CM11 and CM12
2. It produces a better focus and sharper images than any other camera app I've tried on CM.
3. I tried it on stock Lollipop and it produces a sharper image than stock, but not as good as A Better Camera.
My guess is that Snap Camera has found a way to integrate with TW or with the RAW files.
Here are the links:

Discussion
Try it and share your results from your CM-based ROM here.
I'm on stock ROM and I've been using snap camera for the past month, it's awesome! I don't use stock Samsung anymore.
I love the results since it removes the noise reduction =D. I've done so many comparisons (took pics and deleted them ) and it is just so much better than stock.

Yes it's the real thing. I just don't know why there are so many complaints in the CM and related threads about the camera performance. There is already a solution: Snap Camera simply gives the best results on CM.

Yes it's the real thing. I just don't know why there are so many complaints in the CM and related threads about the camera performance. Snap Camera not only gives better results than CM, it gives better results than stock Samsung!

Does it support phase focus shot? Then I switch[emoji4]

I just tried this (6.2.2 HDR apk) with not-so-great results. First post says "it removes noise" but thats precisely the problem I am having, that it is not removing noise. The shots are definitely sharper than the stock camera on OA6, which is finally like the stock camera on 4.4 with burst shots, etc, but the fact it has all this noise makes it un-usable.
The only change I made was to check the 'samsung camera' box.
Check out the comparison between stock and snap camera:

also does it have 4k or 120fps video taking?
For me if you said better than stock cm12 camera then yes it is but to compare with stock TW, hell no! Have you tried "a better camera" apk? It has freaking slow processing image but the quality is good actually

Thanks for sharing. First: did you try adjusting the Sharpness setting? It is set on the highest extreme setting by default. Second: What does the Samsung Camera setting box actually do?
I think that the difference is much more dramatic on Cyanogenmod-based roms than on stock. I think that Snap can give you sharper images on a stock rom, but it's not going to be a gamechanger and you'll have to tweak settings.

Try the free trial. I think it has 4k. I don't know about 120fps. This thread was mainly for people with CM-based roms.

I'm sorry- this thread was mainly geared towards people with CM-based roms. If you're like me, you will have tried dozens of different camera apps (including A Better Camera) on CM and gotten bad results. For some reason, Snap Camera seems to produce dramatically sharper results and focus than any other camera app I've tried on CM, especially Google Camera (which was truly terrible).
I'm sure that there are several camera apps that work well on a stock rom, but that's not the dramatic discovery I meant to convey here. I will adjust the OP to reflect this.

beats me what it does, I did not notice any difference. Yes, I played with the sharpness, still a ton of noise whether its on 0 or 6. If I play with the ISO settings I can reduce noise, the auto mode sucks.
You can check denoise but it blurs a little bit the picture
The 16mp pics at default settings create a 8mb photo. Pretty big...

Check that box and it will denoise but,
**it also cuts each picture size in half**.
By that I mean the file size. Resolution is the same but for example with denoise on, take a pic and let's say it is 6mb. Turn denoise off, take exact same photo again, you'll see that the resulting file size might be 12mb +/- 1 or 2 mb

I'm getting 3.3mb with denoise and 7.5mb without. I don't know how you are getting 12mb!
Denoise certainly helps clarify things like writing, but it does blur fine details.
I wonder if it's possible to use the 7.5mb image and just denoise it as needed? Picasa?

?[emoji50] [emoji47] but the tw cam pretty much sucks.
The only nice thing is it's slow motion video recording. but honestly the image quality is mediocre at best.

This is completely free and has all of the functionality (and more) of snap. The ui is far more intuitive overall and there are clear and non intrusive better quick-access settings

Can you clarify whether the Open Camera results you are referring to are on a CM-based rom??? Almost all the camera apps give good results on TW but have horrid results on CM.

Denoise is only in the Editor app right? As i can't see it in the camera app anywhere?
i'm currently on stock Bob7 lolipop rom.
The app certainly seems quicker than stock camera app, but as mentioned before it adds loads of noise to the photos.
My guess is that it defaults to a higher ISO setting resulting in faster shutter speeds ( less blur) but more noise in the photos.
