[Q] Getting virtual buttons on the LaNight 9.3 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi fellow Cappy-ites
I have been using Roms from the guys at SlimRoms, SlimBean being the latest. I installed LaNight 9.3 last night and everything is just not what i was used to . I'd like to know how i can get some of the customization features i had with SlimBean in the LaNight rom, like activating the virtual buttons and changing its size, changing the screen resolution etc.

I've never flashed LANIGHT, although, changing your dpi should be somewhere in either ROM control or settings. As for the virtual buttons, should be in ROM control.
Those are kinda shots in the dark, you'll most likely get a better answer in LANIGHT's thread.

Oh I see, you don't have enough posts just yet.
Like I said, I never used LANIGHT but I figured I would give it a shot. In LANIGHT's features, are those 2 there? They might not be cooked into the ROM at all

Well there's your answer. All the 4.2 ROMs are on Beta/early stage atm, you won't get all the features you've been getting in 4.1 just yet.

Also, I thought that ROM was supposed to be a pure AOSP ROM, so I would not expect features that aren't included in stock android. You are probably expecting features like the ones Slim Bean and CM have, but this won't have those.

Which ever one you like the best? Honestly, there is no such thing as the "best" in the custom ROM world. What suits you best? I don't know, I can't answer that for you. If you want Touchwiz and S-Pen capabilities...there are a few options. Do you like AOSP? MIUI?...cause there are a few of those as well!

imlika's AOSP ICS hands down for me. I had issues with partial root permissions with all other ICS releases, but not with AOSP. Also it's slim (no Samsung crapware), fast and can be run in tablet mode with no issues.
The only downside is the video recording doesn't work (missing drivers, will be fixed in time hopefully), and USB connectivity (this can be overcome by using various WiFi file sharing apps from the market).
Okay, I'll play. I'd have to agree. AOSP at the moment is pretty damn flawless, and for most people, the pure Google experience is the preferred one. I also love MIUI to death, and I think the level and ease of customization is unparalleled anywhere in the mobile OS realm.

I use imilka's aosp, mostly because I love the tablet mode capability in that,
and if i want stock, I would use Team Rocket rom, version 1.6 is gonna be released tomorrow and it has lots of fix, So I hear.

Curious about my new project? [UPDATED May 29]

UPDATE ON MAY 29, 2012: I'm sorry guys.
I won't be releasing my project. I'm actually stopping the effort to port the rom. I can't do it, it just is way too complicated to complete.
This means, until I decide to work on something new or find something worth porting, I am not developing for the D3 or Droid Bionic anymore.
I won't be picking up Motoblur + Android 4.0.4 either, so eliminate that question as well.
I hope you guys won't get mad.

I'm all for options, but Sense just isn't my cup of tea. Not to mention it would be Gingerbread based (I don't believe any HTC device currently has ICS), and many people (myself included) would see it as a step back.

What exactly has you hung up, as far as ICS is concerned (just a question)? Everything works, with the exception of face unlock, and some spotty bluetooth issues. Granted, I'm not overly familiar with the GSM builds and their respective bugs, but most people really seem to be enjoying the 4.0 builds...

The HTC One X has it Actually, I think all of the new HTC One series phones have it.
it's will be great if it contains a RTL & BIDI languages as well.....
I'm definitely interested. I prefer having full functionality for my phone, so the ICS ROMs are out for me for now, and I prefer the GB ROMs to be unthemed. It seems that all of the themed ROMs have something that I think looks mediocre (bad fonts that make it difficult to tell normal from bold, or that flow badly; on screen button elements that do not work right; mediocre battery indicators on the status bar; unattractive notification pull-downs; etc.)

i really hope its a good, multi-lang, gb 2.3.7 rom liek cm7.2 without any bloat like sense.
maybe even the hw-codecs and such are working?
btw. if you need a gsm guy for testing, msg me.
Here's an update:
This rom is a pain in the ass. It really is. So the chances of me completing this, with school and other things have gone down to about 20% from 70%.
But here are some details:
Gingerbread 2.3.6
Later Software from another device (I'm not naming it)
No GSM compatibility
Sorry GSM users, there isn't a way GSM will work on the rom until the device I'm porting this from is updated later this year.

Are you using the Bell or Chinese ROM? I worked on the Bell 2.3.6 port, and it worked, but my modding/theme-ing skills are weak, so it didn't move much past stock appearance with some build.prop tweaks.

I am using AllianceROM from my signature. It is very smooth and snappy. It's TW based JB and it's nicely themed with OTAs and a lots of customizations. You can install with or without Samsung and Google apps. Just follow instructions.
I'm using Super Nexus 2.0
Pros:
Smooth and fast
No Bloatware
Great battery life
Cons:
None really. (some may say it is to much of a minimal ROM) but I actually like that
My favs
It's been about 15 months since i'm having my beloved Note, and i guess i flashed like 30 different ROM's on it, from GB's to JB's, CM, MIUI, literally everything. Let me mention my 2 favourites, The first one was this: [ROM][4.1.2][10/14] Cookies & Cream 1.3.0. Very highly customizable, smooth, and amazing battery life. The reason i stopped using it, cuz it has some flaws, i cannot save my contacts to the SIM card, or anywhere else, just to my Google, which i don't want. The other one problem was, there's no option to store the photos on your external SD card, only to the internal. Apart from this, a very good ROM. The next i'd like 2 mention is, my all-time fav, Chrack' s XXLRQ v16 Final. I'm using it for a while now, this is the most perfect ROM i ever used on my Note. Everything works perfectly, no FC's, lagging, smooth as melted butter, and it has probably the best battery life i ever experienced. Simply perfect ROM. I cannot recommend anything else more than this.
CM 10.1. Pure; like it should be.

CM 10.1 is the fastest but also the softest
Paranoid Android is the coolest but buggy
All the TW ROMS including stock are dealable and for a major manufacturer to make a ROM that u can actually use WO having to be an I-Drone then i think every veteran would say that's impressive!
but also that, basic functionality doesn't mean that a C student getting a C+ is someone i want to hire or give a medal...u don't get praise for making something that works, after a million failed attempts, especially when u are a zillion dollar company
All the TW ROMs are pedestrian and I never understood why people can't live wo S-Planner? You use a TW ROM BC u have a separate tablet, and u cant live wo SPen...omg are u kidding? hahahahaha
Start flashing virgins, there's no reason we cant direct mobile computing....u can lay down and accept whats given, which is for them, or u can demand the best and push the envelope
Really we just want the hardware...
Thanks Samsung for making a device that I-Drones might look at BC its big but no thanks on trying to make more Samsung drones.... Its not good for humanity, technological advancement or me personally
BTW i use Paranoid Android (Jelly Beer)

I am unfamiliar with most of the devs with this phone. If Calkulin was here, I'd instantly know his great reputation from past experience. Right now, I stick with stock rooted and hotspot modded MDL. Stock kernel for compatibility issues with triangle away. Custom recovery for flashing and nandroid. I'm sure I could get better performance with custom, but I haven't ran across anything yet that impressed me. I haven't been very adventurous either. No disrespect towards devs, I just haven't been in this phone's scene long enough to learn reputations well enough yet. Calkulin"s roms did 99% of what I wanted a rom to do. Unfortunately he went onto HTC territory.

I'm using freegs4 because it fits my needs.
I love the 90s good times
stock rooted with a custom kernel.. once freegs4 is updated ill deff give it a flash...
Just flashed the new Premium Rom and I like it it a lot. I like all the Roms though. lol
I've played with several roms and keep coming back to stock rom, Koontz (sp?) kernel, and a few of the mods.
Stock deodexed MDL. KT kernel, with a BUNCH of mods installed (especially Xposed Installer with Nottach module). This might be the one phone I will not need to run a custom ROM for! It's awesome stock with a bunch of tweaks and modded out.
My favorite setup so far is stock odexed MDL with root + mods, such as CrossBreeder, Xposed Framework (and Nottach & Tweakbox module), ktoonsez kernel, and Viper4Android audio.
The phone is stable, fast, no lag, and battery life is excellent.

I had that exact set up too... then I thought my phone was messed up bc dual shot kept freezing up on me and I thought it was faulty hardware... but it turns out that KT Kernel is causing the issue bc ktsoonsez's kernel souces are newer than our firmware so it's causing problems with the dual shot... so I'm running stock kernel for now until that gets fixed!

You only have to use one. lol I'll probably flash Sonic when he updates. Thinking on trying Revolt next. I'm a flash whore.
I'm really enjoying Premium ROM. It sounds like he'll be adding some flashable themes soon as well.
Trust me though, when Hyperdrive makes its way to our phone, which I'm told will be soon, I'll be checking it out as well.
But really, all the TW ROM's are nice. Blu Kuban is always a really nice change of pace and I usually keep my backup of that one so I can quickly run it at any time.
The AOSP ROM's are coming together nicely as well, though I'm holding off on making them my daily until the Pure Google S4 comes out. Then those ROM's will be stable just like TW.

KitKat

I have a question. I have been reading about kitkat apps. It seems that particularly the web browser is pretty crap. Can anyone verify these comments? I don't know that it will be an issue, but I was curious if anyone here has any personal experience. If it's bad, I'll stay with 4.2.2 . Thanks.

The launcher is just OK, it's really Google Now's version of a launcher with it built in. I found it be a little slow and very little customization. Fine for the masses who don't know any different (which are the majority of users, sadly). Nova destroys it all day long.
Far as KitKat goes, it all depends on the ROM and the device. Some ROMs are way behind and some are way ahead. I hate to say it but if CM11and SlimKat were all I had to choose from, I'd probably go back to 4.2. Yes CM is the foundation of all ROMs so I'm grateful it's around, but for KitKat they still have a long way to go, at least for S2. Same for SlimKat. Just too many issues. The unofficial ROMs are kicking major butt though. For the Exhibit, I'd stick with 4.2 for now although to be fair I haven't tried the newest KitKat ROMs available here lately. @jfbs is working hard to get you guys a stable 4.4 though!

I can easily install Nova again. It's the launcher I use now and I love it. Thanks for the advice. I am looking forward to @jfbs' rom. I was just eager to try kitkat because it was supposedly designed to work on phones like ours, where ram is at a premium. Initial reviews did say it ran much lighter, but I am not sure if it really makes a difference.

Ultimately there is one truism I have found, functionality and speed are mainly hardware dependent. You can have the best ROM ever made in history but if the device doesn't have the hardware to back it up, it's useless. I booted the Exhibit for the first time in almost two weeks the other day and it was so much painfully slower than what I have now it isn't even funny. It reminded me how thankful I need to be that I have something else to be honest. A good KitKat ROM may help this device, IDK.
Yeah, the browser on Slimkat is all slow and FC's, even when you try to use a different browser than stock. With the other 4.4 ROMs we have I think you can just use a different browser if the stock has FC issues.
I stay using 4.2, since I can OC higher than 1012MHz and can swap the sd's.
FC stands for force close? Thanks for the advice. I will stay with 4.2 for now. I will see what @jfbs comes up with.
