Alright lads, and I guess lasses as well...
First of all an apology, its threads like this one I'm writing which I know annoy everybody, heck its annoying me i'm writing it but I just can't figure out whats going on.
So heres my issue,
Used to have a galaxy note, loved it. Was stolen, so am now in possesion of a friends old galaxy S1. Turned it on, hated it, tried to flash darkys rom. Had it sweet, loved it. Issue was, my contacts obviously got deleted. Easy I thought, i'll just connect to Kies and sync from Microsoft Outlook... Nope, realised MTPApplication.apk or whatever it is get deleted. Then went through getting darkyota to reinstall it. Did so, still no luck with kies, (at this point ill make it clear that I had debugging off). So tried to flash to another rom, that ****ed up, so flashed back to darkys went through everything again and still no luck connecting to Kies. I really wouldn't give a **** but I just need my contacts. I have to many business conctacts and stuff. It's kind of important... So my game plan, unless someone can explain to me how I can get my contacts onto the phone without kies im thinking of attempting to flash back to original.... Sync all contacts, sync it with google. Flash back to darkys, and use google contacts??
Issue, I can't find the approriate files to use in Odin. Aaaaand i get confused with the CSC... Im in Australia if that helps.
Again, apologise guys, im tired as **** and at the stage where the screen is just moulding into one big grey blob.
Any help is appreciated...

OK, Kies doesn't work with any custom ROM, only with original Samsung Firmware. Sooooo, I guess you'll need to

I was selling my phone and i decided to give it the latest update from sprint now its restarting randomly every time. Is anyone know how to fix this restarting problem or can anyone help me root it or downgrade it to something else PLEASE??
2.27.651.6 is the software that the phone as now
Throw DarchDroid on it.
Use this. It is the original unpatched 2.27.651.5 RUU upgrade utility. It can be used to downgrade.
Credits go to Regaw for his link.

I know for sure it works because I've used it to downgrade it a lot. Once you do, if you'd like to root, follow Regaw's Guide (Link)

Back to 1.5 please?
Sorry, noob here. Will this let me downgrade my phone back to 1.5? 2.1 sucks big time, and I just want my old phone back.
Thanks for the help.

I'm afraid not. That RUU I posted is specifically for the 2.1 release with the rooting exploit possibility.
Before dumping 2.1, I urge you to give a custom rom a try. It really makes a world of difference,

Thanks...can you recommend a "basic" version? I would just like a clean fast-running OS. No bells and whistles.
I originally wanted BT to work with my pdanet, but can live without that.
I also tried running a hack to get the wireless to see ad hoc networks, but it didn't work either. It too would be nice, but having a phone that doesn't crash would be nicer.
The change of the Maps annoys me the most. The old system used a call-in voice recognition system that worked. The new OS uses "on-board" voice recognition that is the worst I have EVER seen. It can't get ANY words right.
So, you're trying to drive and yelling at the phone for not getting the address correctly, and the type-in option keeps changing screens, closing the keyboard, etc. It's so absolutely useless, I'm shocked any idiot ever decided it was good enough to get though beta.
Thanks,
Greg

Well, it is certainly subjective, but yes, a non-Sense (ha!) Rom does look much more basic. My advice is to try RegawMOD, (the non-themed version) its incredibly fast, and comes with Sense.
By the way, you may be confusing the Maps app with the Navigation app (they are two different apps). The navigation app still does voice recognition.

Thanks, I'll try it out.
Yes, I meant Navigation. The voice recognition on the new Navigation doesn't work at all. Zero zilch nada. It can't recognize the simplest words. "San Jose" becomes "Ben Lomond" or some random city on the other side of the country (it has no geographical sense).
The older system (tied to 1.5, I guess?) had a call-in system that analyzed the voice print offline, on a big computer I guess, and sent the link to your phone. It seemed to work nearly every time.
There's a Stock 2.1 ROM out there if you really want to keep it basic. Just look in the Development section.

No, that's my problem. 2.1 sucks ass. Nothing works as well as 1.5 did, and definitely nothing works better.
Great...
Thought I had DC 2.09 installed clean...until it started to lag, so I rebooted. Now I'm stuck at work without a phone that works, since it's stuck in a bootloop.
F this...Sprint sent me a new phone. After I confirm it's 1.5, this 2.1-infected POS goes back.

It won't bootloop unless you enabled JIT. And since it's in a bootloop, just pull the battery lol.
Oh, and there are probably no 1.5 Hero's at Sprint anymore. They're most likely ALL 2.1
Hi, guys. I need help but I don't want to start an entirely new thread so I'll add it here.
I just got a new Sprint HTC Hero and it comes preloaded with 2.27.651.6, and I'm trying to downgrade to 2.27.651.5 but when I open RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release.exe it opens with a loading bar, the bar completes, and then the installer closes. But there's still an instance of it in Task Manager.
I've been struggling with this for days, if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.
Edit: I'm on Windows XP SP3, my anti-virus and firewall are disabled, and my phone is connected to HTC Sync. I've also tried in Safe Mode.
2.27.651.6 fix issues
hey i just went and got a new cdma hero from sprint because my old on had hardware issues... well i looked and low and behold software build 2.27.651.6... so I get the RUU installer and it keeps giving me an error... i get the progress bar then the verifying info on your phone. then I get error message (170) connection error... its saying my phone isn't connected so i do the fastboot method and still nothing can anyone tell me what im doing wrong?
I'm no expert, but I think I read that if you run the ruu twice, back to back, it will work. I believe it's in regaw's thread somewhere .
For the connection error, do you have the latest htc sync? It has updated drivers.

I tried it several time and im pretty sure I have the new sync. I currently don't have a working computer so i can't try at command I have to borrow a computer and try it but I did try several times and kept getting the connection error.
I'd you are on the .6 build there is a new root tool available. You should be able to do a search for the thread. I'll look for here in a sec.
Edit:
I can't figure out how to post a link from the mobile app but the thread is in the dev section posted by Zenulator.

can someone please help? i recently bought a used tilt ii (HTC 8925) and have had several recurring problems since.
1) for some reason the phone seems to delete/lose my contacts. initially i manually entered contacts until i discovered active sync. after it lost those contacts the first time i copied contacts from my outlook phonebook (over 200) on my laptop. within a few days it lost those as well.
i figured this might have happened (somehow) after unsuccessfully attempting to delete some apps (mainly some games which i don't like); install new apps ( an RPN calc & updated version of S2U2) modifying existing layout using the Chome editor app.
so after the third time of losing contacts & reinstalling using active sync from outlook, i decided NOT to install/delete or change any apps. last nite i modified some contacts assigning several to different categories. woke up this morning & voila! all contacts are lost except for 6.. WTF???
what is causing this phone to lose contacts like this??
2) i have set pass word lock on my phone seems to work fine for a few days then suddenly it no longer recognizes my password. That is my situation now. & again it has happened before. i think i ended up powering down phone, removing sim card for a several minutes then rebooting.
what is causing this?
3) lastly my active sync program often does not work. it will not recognize my phone. & then when i make changes to get it to recognize the phone ( deleting the device & then adding it back), it won't recognize the settings for my outloook server. what is going wrong with this that i have to keep redoing this after so many days?
4) how do i do a system restore on this phone. i have searched for this as well with little luck on HOW to actually do this on the phone.
i hope these issues & questions make sense. lawd knows i sure can't make sense of what is going on with this phone. & yes i have searched on the forums for these issues & can't find full answers to the problems i have collectively.
my phone has WM 6.5 professional, ROM version: TPC_V11 Mega WWE; radio version 1.70.19.09, HTC touchflo (which i don't use);
Thanks,
kahlil

It sounds like something going on with the way you have ActiveSync configured. Make sure you have enabled the calendar and contact update box when you set it up. You also might try running the sync a couple of times.
I Might be wrong but since you have a custom rom you might want to try flashing a stock rom and then reflashing the same custom rom, cuz sometimes it fixes strange issues like these. Hope that helps.

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting on these forums and I'm surprised I haven't done so quicker because these forums have done much to help me out in regards to my Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000.
My question is: I just did a hard reset on my phone and I've managed to back up everything on the phone so that I could restore it. Everything has been restored as I hoped, except for messages.
I managed to get Samsung Kies to work for my Samsung Galaxy S [if you need help getting it to work I may be able to help you] and I created a back up of my Contacts, Calendar, Memos and Messages. The first three have worked perfectly and I have been able to transfer the saved data from Kies back onto the phone with one click.
Unfortunately, messages seemingly cannot be transferred. I have the .SME file but there is no option on Kies to transfer the messages to the phone. Is there no way to do this? My messages are really important to me and now I can no longer access them on my phone.
Thank you sooo much in advance for any help you can render!
P.S. If you need help fixing Samsung Kies, just leave a reply or Private Message me, whatever you like.
P.P.S. Sorry about forgetting to put a thread title. I'm not sure how I can change it.

I have exactly the same problem
This is really strange.. I tried nearly everything but couldn't restore my messages
@MSoud: Have you found an answer? Thanks for sharing
Also need help with this problem
Spoken to several (hundred) people and there is currently absolutely no way to restore messages saved through Kies.
Unfortunately, the messages are lost... forever
ever
ever
ever.
Well not 'ever' per se; you can still access them using the Kies program, but who is going to do that? I've seen my grandmother get up from a bucket seat quicker than it loads.
Hey, I just bought a Samsung Captivate from Rogers. I am really new to this phone and the os Android. I have never used Android before, so I have no clue how it really works. May someone please guide me? what is the first thing I should test for to see it is working perfectly fine? what are some awesome apps on the Android? and whats all this froyo, custom roms? etc for? please help and thank you!
ps: I came from a blackberry, I was wondering how can I transfer my contacts from the BB to the Captivate? and would the BB charger be sufficient for the Captivate? I noticed they both used the same port.

Welcome to the forums. Glad you got yourself a Captivate. It's a great phone.
To test if everything is working perfectly fine, turn it on and use it. Make phone calls, text people, use the camera, go outside for a walk with Google Maps with your gps on. Use the phone like you normally would. If it doesn't explode or melt in your hands, it works just like it should.
As for your contacts, there are a few ways. If you synced your BB with your computer, you should be able to export your contacts to a .csv file and copy that onto the phone and import them in the contacts app. I know I had AT&T copy my contacts from phone to phone when I got my Captivate. You could also try saving all your contacts to your SIM card and then put it back in your Captivate and import them that way.
Your BB charger should work just fine. The Captivate charges at 500ma or 700ma. As long as your BB charger has one of those outputs, it should be just fine.
Sorry for jumping in the middle as I try now to create a new thread for something similar.
I am a new Rogers Captivate owner as well and I am having a connection issue between my PC and the Cap.
I used the SamSung Kies I got off SamSungApp.com by selecting the UK region thingy and installed Canada as the region. Installation went fine and I rebooted my PC after it went through.
Plugged in the phone for the first time, Windows attempted to install the driver but no success. FYI I am running Windows 7 64bit and wonder if there is still a communication issue between Windows 7 and the Captivate? Am I doing anything wrong? What can I do to fix this issue?

Kies does not install the drivers for phone. Go to the Samsung website and go to the support page for your phone and download the drivers. Install them before you plug your phone into your computer again.

Hey everyone, I just recently got a Samsung Captivate with Rogers, which is the i896.
I've been hearing a lot about rooting lately and i'm starting to understand a little more about what it is exactly. I'm interested in the idea that it can help speed up the phone and allow for more apps, but I have a few questions.
1) Where can I find the most recent way to root a ROGERS Captivate? I was reading around and read that the "One click fix" does not work anymore
2) Will rooting my phone change the interface of the phone?
3) If something goes wrong and my phone doesn't root, can I go back to the default settings easily?
I might have more questions later on but thats it for now. I'd just also like to hear your opinions on rooting and what exactly YOU have been able to do with your phone by rooting.
Thanks!
welcome ill answer your qs first then ill give you some links to help you out
A)rooting and flashing roms (2 diff things) are easiest done from STOCK 2.1 (which you should have) if you plan on flashing custom roms DONT do the rogers/samsung keis firmware update. it changes the recovery to 3e. (ink below if needed)
B) rooting does not change the interface. ROMS DO
C) if you cant successfully root, nothing has changed. you should be able to tho. and you can UNROOT, and wipe to factory too. for warranty repairs and they will never know.
OPPINION:
custom roms are the way to go, more current, full featured complete and on time, cutomizable, fun, and brain-power using than stock roms.
MY ADVICE: DO IT but TAKE YOUR TIME AND READ. I READ FOR 3 or 4 days before i touched a thing!! and still had very minor issues and things that had to be ironed out. dont let that scare you. its a learning experience. hopefully with the links i give you you will have less SEARCHING TO DO. but you my freind, are in the right fourm and right section, too! i have a good feeling about you already!
YOU CAN DO IT WATERBOY!!!

First of all, thank you guys so much for giving me real replies instead of a bunch of "Go read for yourself" or "try the search button" lol... I've been doing some reading but I needed to ask a few direct questions.
@Trusselo, i'm not too ignorant to computers. I know my way around a computer and used to do some web design and basic coding so i'm somewhat okay.
My only concern is that once i've rooted my phone, I have to use some sort of unix/linux commands to work around my phone and do things? Is this true? Also, I read that the rooted version has a different keyboard? I still have a hard time getting used to this touchscreen board.
SIDE QUESTION ABOUT CAPTIVATE AND WIFI: This is my biggest problem right now, its actually a small problem but it gets annoying. Basically, my WiFi stays connected when i'm at home but sometimes it seems like it slows done or the connection lags or even stops working. I can usually tell if this is happening because pages don't load fast enough in the browser or don't load at all. While this is happening, my wifi connection still says "Connected" though. I always have to go back, disconnect, re-type my password, connect again. Then I go back and it works fine. Is there any way to fix this?

Just rooting the phone does not change the interface at all. Rooting just allows you access to the locked system files so you can change them.
Also you won't have to use terminal commands to do hardly anything, but it would be a good practice to learn how to use it.
From there you can change your keyboard if you like. There are a few keyboards out there that are better than the stock keyboard is, as far a functionality.
Be warned once you get onto flashing and modding your phone, its like an addiction, and you probably wont be able to stop.

I always have to go back, disconnect, re-type my password, connect again. Then I go back and it works fine. Is there any way to fix this?

i really hope that you didnt think i was accusing you of not being good with computers or being patronizing, i was just trying to provide you (or anyone else that reads this) with as much info as i could, while not doing the work for you.
terminal commands: ive never had to use them, no adb shell, no terminal emulator on phone, although it wouldnt be outside of my skill, i just prefer to do it without learning something i dont need to. (yet.. still thinking about learning some apping)
keyboard: rooting does not change any part of the UI at all, all rooting does is allow you to access (read / write / copy /delete) protected system files. And you can only do those scary things with use of other root apps after rooting your phone.
wifi: this is why some people flash new modems, if you still have issues and really want to send it back for warranty, dont worry, you can have it back good as new in no time!
Not too sure what you mean by flash new modems... ? And I wasn't accusing you of anything lol. Just letting you know that i'm not 100% dumb when it comes to computer but even then I don't know if I would be ready to use typed commands and stuff to use my phone.

The modem is simply what the phone uses for connectivity. It is a separate piece of the firmware that can be flashed on its own. It is a topic that is a little beyond the scope of this post. However, there is a stickied thread in the Captivate development forum called 'the modem thread' that outlines a lot of the information. The main reason many people do this change is that some experience better connectivity, lower battery consumption, and some other benefits. Again modems are beyond the scope of this post, so I encourage you to read that sticky, as there can be some pitfalls to changing modems. Best of luck and enjoy the great phone!
Oh okay thank you. I thought you meant I would have to take my phone back and get a new one. The WiFi works fine, its just that I have to disconnect, enter my wifi password, then reconnect sometimes for it to work properly.
Do you mean that the WiFi is something that can be changed after the phone is rooted to work better?
Can't say for sure, but it's always worth rooting anyway.
