Otterbox Defender charging dock or go wireless??? - Galaxy Note II Accessories

Got my Defender in last week and now I am looking for a charging dock, to my dismay none of the docks I have found are compatible with the case on the the phone. So how many people here have gone wireless? I read that you can get 1mA on wireless, I could live with that...

Charging wireless with this phone sucks donkey balls. Its going to take you 6 hours to fully charge your phone regardless of what the amp rating is on the charger because our phone is max out at 500 Milli amps

I charge my phone at night when I am sleeping so wireless would be perfect (if I had non Sprint/Verizon Note 2)

Our phones are maxed out at half an amp? Why would they give me a 2 amp charger instead of keeping with the galaxies 1 amp?

If you flash the perseus kernel you can up the increase the half to a full amp.

I think the wireless charging is maxed at .5 amps. If you plug it in you get the full charge.

People are saying different things here lol.
Its gotta be more then .5 amps when hardwired so I would assume he meant .5 amps max wireless.... unless you flash a perseus kernel then you get 1 amp wireless. And as for hardwired......????

It may be maxed out at half an amp soothe charging mat and rear of the phone don't get too hot.
The normal charger is 2amp and charges in next to no time.
I would say most people would use the wireless charging mat to either charge overnight or while on a desk to keep the phone topped up between use.

Well I'm SOL. Just read that the phone has gold pins on the back cover that touch the mat to charge the battery. I have a Defender case so that ain't gonna work.

No no... that is wrong.
The gold pins are used to touch a receiver on the inside of the battery door to accept the charge.

Hmmm so we would have to mod our defender cases if we wanted to do this. Good thread about it in the S3 accessories section.

Qi Standard Charging Kit

Hey guys,
Looks like a new induction charging product for Note 2 or S3 has surfaced on eBay. Or maybe it's not new to some. This is not a modded Touchstone version, but instead a patch induction coil that is pressed against the charging pin on top of the battery. It comes with the mat as well. It's a 1000mAH charging current. You can buy the coil or charging pad separately too. I picked one up, but it'll take a while to get here because it's coming from HK.

Sometimes you just want to throw stuff... just make sure it belongs to someone else.

I don't see why not. I was able to charge my Note 2 using my Galaxy S2 micro-usb charger no problem. The 2A stock just makes it charge faster. In fact, I am glad that the induction coil is charging the device at 1A. The heat generated with the pad next to the battery would not be good for the battery itself. My Palm Pre used to get hot when it was on the Touchstone. The slower charge rate is also less 'stressful' on the battery. You can google about the charge rate to see what I mean.
I saw on a thread here that someone is looking for a 2A car charger. There's no need for that unless you're in a hurry. Again, my Samsung GS2 car charger also charge my Note 2 just fine as well. I drove on an 8hr road trip with that charger plugged in and it worked fine. It charged the phone and kept it topped up.
Will not work with different versions of Note 2?

My Note 2 does not have the 2 metal connectors next to the battery (metal connectors might be hidden)....sucks looks very convenient to have. I think other users have found out that the Sprint and Verizon's version of the Note 2 need modifications for this to work. bummer..

Yeah, that sucks. I just checked my ATT N2 and the connectors are there.
This is the one I bought from a chinese manufacturer. The pad is thick. The phone doesn't sit fluch on a flat surface.
That said, bought this for the T889 and it does not work. Looks like the TMO version may need a wire running from a resistor to the positive contact point.

Checkout that thread, it's mentioned that the kernel limits the charging on the 2 pins for wireless to 500mA.

That's not an issue for me. Induction charging is a convenience for at the end of the day. I'm not in a hurry since it's going to be charging overnight anyway. Besides, slower charge is more gentle on the battery. But that slower charging rate is good to know. It might be a deal breaker for some people.

True, but even at a 2A charge, Samsung is being gentle on the battery. As a genera rule, all Lithium batteries can charge at what is called a "1C" rate. To find the rate, it's as simple as multiplying 1 by the capacity of the battery in amp-hours.
So, the stock battery could charge at 3.1A with no problems. More advanced batteries are 2C and some 5C. As you can see 2A is below the standard charge rate, 1A is further below it and 500Ma is *really* below it.
TL;DR you can charge at 2A with no damage
I plan on using this charger in my vehicle's car mount. I will a NFC tag to open pandora and turn bluetooth on, as well as it will start charge since the dock will have the charger mounted in it. I use 3 batteries in rotation anyway, so I do not rely on charging my phone via cable.
with the note 2 you will only get 500mAh max, with sets people are buying that hs been posted, the base will trickle charge at 300mAh when reached about 70-80 % charged.
i'm actually using the same set, along with a double base and panasonic one at work for both S3 and Note 2.
Again, the charge rate is not critical for me as long as it gets the job done when I wake up. Induction charging is really for the convenience. If I'm in a hurry, I'll plug it into the OEM 2A charger.

i agree, bed time charging, slow is better for the battery.
I have the same one, and a double base, also have a panasonic one at work.
I saw on the eBay listing that the N2 pad supposedly output 1A, whereas the S3 version output 700mA. Are you using it on your S3 or N2? Not sure if you have a N2 because N2 is not listed on your signature.

i had the s3, just got a note 2 now.
Think it'll charge through a TPU case? Even if it gets reduced to ~500mah charge because of the added thickness of the case I wouldn't mind.

most.
my S3 tag has 700 maH , not 1000 maH (like note 2 tags)
now i put it on my phone and put it on my LG Verizion wireless charger
and it just beeps green/yellow flashing lights
sometimes it will just show green (means its charging) but my phone has zero indication that it is charging, I figure the tag that was sent to me is faulty

EZO Power Dock (EZCR30)

Got this dock off of ebay (had a bit of money in paypal I want to use from selling my S2). Dock is decent, it doesn't have that great of a support for the device meaning it can still wobble a bit.
Another thing that has me worried is the 500mAh output stamped on the base. I know the Note 2 has higher output usb charger, haven't brought it home yet but will see if it affects.

Yeah, that's all. It will work. The OEM charger has several charging rates too, the lowest being 300mA. So this one will work the lower amperage just affects the speed of charging. There is a slight possibility of not charging the device while the device is in use with a lot of juice being pulled by the phone. But you'll probably be ok.

I've had better success with aftermarket than OE about 75% of time. Hence why I said it's more opinion based. Just like my Anker 3100 is better than the Samsung battery 3100 that came with the note 2.
99% of reviews anywhere are based upon the customers experience/opinions. Apple chargers always sucked for me. HTC chargers had many issues in the past.

I am not talking about reviews. I am making my suggestion based on science and comparisons to other chargers and knockoffs from china. If you're buying a flagship phone, buy a flagship charger. And a good USB cable. Cables make a hell of a difference in electronics that can accept more than 500mah charging.

I never said a knockoff I said after market those two are completely different I am talking about anker verses a knockoff generic. I will use a different charger that is an aftermarket and I typically use the Samsung cable that came with the phone or my heavy duty black berry cable simple as that.

I am talking about all chargers in general. OEM chargers are better than the belkins, tankers and whatever. I read a couple very good articles about how good or bad chargers are. The ones that come with our electronics are usually the best. USB cables vary, sometimes even within the same models. The Samsung and apple chargers are really the best value when you consider longevity, heat, reliability and some other factors I am not qualified to explain.

for what it's worth the oem samsung galaxy note 2 charger is pretty fast for me a 2.1 amps. I even bought a second one to have for up stairs in my house.

I heard that. Gotta use a Samsung cable though to get the full benefit. Haven't found another cable that will let it charge full blast yet.

Yes perfectly safe.
Amps (current) are drawn/pulled, not pushed. More amps in a charger just means your phone can draw more without burning out the charger. It does not mean that the charger pumps out more than your phone can handle.
Volts are different. Too much or too liitle volts are harmful but all usb chargers are the same 5v so don't worry about that.
Lastly, unfortunately the different manufacturers have created different special schemes to trigger or allow devices to exceed 0.5 amps (to prevent a high draw device from trying to pull 2.0 amps out of a 0.5 amp usb port and burning out a usb port or possible even all usb ports on your expensive laptop!)
So, merely having a charger that says 2.1A on the side isn't enough by itself. You will still need to try differnt cables and try different models of chargers and even different kernels if you are rooted, or refer to reviews where the reviewer covered this explicitly instead of just saying "It worked great" which is a meaningless waste of everyone's time.
For instance there was another thread about chargers where they found that on a 2 port model that has one port labelled Apple and another labelled Android or just unlabelled, they found that they actually behaved different. The Apple port was 2.1A and the Android port was only 1.0 or 1.5A, yet a GN2 charged faster on the Android port. Because the GN2 didn't recognize the Apple port as being capable of high current, at least not with a standard cable, and so the GN2 was only pulling 500 or 700 ma, while on the Android port it pulled 1.0 or 1.5A.
So you really need reviews and testing that takes all this into account and specifies actual charging times and that make and model of the usb cable used etc. Or just buy the official stuff from Samsung which is all garanteed to match and work as expected without having to know all that unsuspected stuff.

I have quite a bit of cells and tablets, who doesn't, but I also have quite a few rc cars and helis. All the battery's we are using are Li-on although I use a ton of lipo (lithium polymer) on my rcs. Ive built packs, soldered connections, I charge 6 batteries in parallel, etc. I have a 530 watt adjustable 18 Volt 30 Amp PSU connected to a 400 watt 18 volt 20 amp balance charger. Granted if your not in the rc world this would be overkill for sure just to charge your cell battery. Point is you can charge any, repeat any Li-on or lipo battery at 1 C. . 1C is the capacity of the battery. All of my lipo rc battery's can be charged at 5C. That means 5 times the capacity of the battery. In our case the note 2 battery is 3100 mah or 3.1A for short hand notation. So if you have a big enough charger like I do, you can safely charge it at 3.1A in an hour. Some of my bigger packs are 6S 30C 10A packs. That is 22.2 volts 30C discharge rate and 10Amp or 10000 mah capacity and 5C charge rate. If your not familiar with the above jargon no matter, the OEM Samsung charger with the OEM usb cable that comes with it puts out 2.1 or 2100mah per hour or 2.1A . Our stock OEM batteries are 3100 mah or 3.1 A. So they will fully charge in about 1 1/2. Ive timed it several times and that is pretty accurate. This is with the phone being off not on while charging. It will take a little longer with the phone on while charging, about 2 hours. Hope this helps.

1amp vs 2.1amp car charger

I've googled it and I'm getting very mixed opinions. Most say 2.1 of course is faster for charging. I am led to believe that because even the box to there car chargers say the same.
I would like to disagree but need help understanding why. Maybe I'm wrong and I have a faulty charger.
My charger has two ports. One is 1amp and the other is 2.1amp. My 1amp side seems to actually charge my phone faster than the 2.1amp side. Also with 2.1amp while in listening to music through Bluetooth using GPS and navigation all at the same time, it tells me my phone is dying faster than it's able to charge. With the 1amp side I'm able to hold a steady charge sometimes going up at least 2 percent during a 30 minute drive.
What's your opinions? This isn't the iPhone or Samsung threads so I'm sure we have some of the smartest guys/girls here on xda
Edit: sorry I'm a bit stoned atm so forgive me for my typos and I'll fix tomorrow.

It should be a no brainer that a 2 amp charger will charge your phone faster as opposed to a 1 amp simply because one has more output than the other. But I believe that because of the smaller battery the phones have, they need a smaller amp per second of charge. If not then it may destabilize your battery.

i just drove 4 hours with a 2.1 amp , fast charge kernel and i can confirm your exact same findings. no idea why.

Be careful with those 2 A chargers. I have seen a lot of threads with fried Ones because of chargers lately

HTC put a limit on how fast the phone can charge. The chipset supports rapid charging but at what cost (of the battery)? So to be safe HTC disabled that feature of the chipset. So even if you plugged it into a 4 amp USB connector, you are not going charge any faster than say 1 amp. Don't know what the specifications are on the optimal amperage...

Using a higher amp charger cannot damage the battery. The phone will only pull as many amps from the charger as it needs (probably 1.5 amps max).

Using a higher amp charger cannot damage the battery. The phone will only pull as many amps from the charger as it needs (probably 1.5 amps max).

I am saying motherboard. I don't know about physics, but I know from reading the troubleshooting thread that many people have now expensive bricks because of those chargers

could you possibly link to those threads? I have the dual charger 1&2.1. My results are opposite of op my 1a doesn't charge phone but the 2.1 gains charge while driving even while watching movie! id like to read up if it may be problematic! thx
Htc one battery originally is charged by 5V and 1A charger; Can 5v. and 1.3 A damage the phone?
One thing that nobody here has mentioned is the possibility that your charger might have been wired wrong and the side that charges faster is actually the 2.1mah connection instead of 1mah.
With all of the chargers from everywhere in the world that we get them from and they are supplied from, anything can happen that We don't expect.
Maybe you might want to get it tested with an OHM Meter to verify which connector is the Higher and which is the Lower.

The only thing that is different (as far as the phone is concerned) is whether it sees an AC style charger or DC style. No matter what, the phone will only pull what the charging circuit "says" to pull.

For some chargers, sometimes the 2 Amp port appears to be using the Apple protocol for USB power, so that port will only provide 0.5 Amps to most other devices. And when the1 Amp port somewhat over delivers, and can source 2 Amps if nothing else is connected and 1.5 Amps if the 2 Amp port is sourcing 0.5 Amps for a non-Apple device. Thus some chargers can support one high power non-Apple device (in the 1 Amp port) and one lower power device (in the 2 Amp port). FYI I use this charger bought on Amazon---Avantek. Worked really well, versatile and low profile.

Car chargers

Just thought I'd share something simple that helps if ur charging ur phone in the car. I've noticed a lot of chargers charge at 1 amp. Seems like it took for ever to charge my phone in the car. I recently bought a 2.1 amp charger for $10 and the charging difference is huge. 6-7 % in 10 minutes with full brightness and gps on. Just thought I'd pass this info on. Sometimes it's the simple things we overlook..

There is a lot more to it than just that. Many actual 2 amp + battery chargers refuse to charge at the full 1.9 amp. Apparently the stock samsung charger gives off a certain resistance between the data terminals. Some cheap usb cables drop the resistance to where it will not charge at full 1.9 even with the correct adapter.
I ended up soldering some resistors in my car charger and replacing the 2 wire usb cable with a 4 wire usb cable that I had laying around. It now charges at the full 1.9 amps. It's rated for 2 amps.

thanks for pointing out the amps primo.. went and got 2 amp charger from biglots for 8$..much better.. was using a very old one and it was worthless.. also using factory cable instead of aftermarket made huge difference
I charge using external batteries...most of the time. I take it that using the correct cable would make a large difference as well
I use Monoprice PID 10239, works great
edit: scratch that, monoprice PID 10239 has a 3 amp fuse which blew when my gf tried to charge her iPhone at the same time as my GS4.
search TopG charger on Amazon for a more compact, fuseless 4.4A car charger. It's $9 and Prime eligible. Fuses in car chargers are pointless since the cigarette lighter receptacle is already fused to 10 or 15 amps in your car.
I bought a car charger from a Chinese eBay vendor and my phone charges from <5% to 50% in roughly 30 minutes.
I actually built my own charger that I hard wired into my car and I love it. I had a snap fish desk charger that crapped out on me, so I bought a lm2596 adjustable power supply for a couple bucks on eBay. Wired that up to the snap fish cable, adjusted the voltage and away I went. The module has a 3 amp capacity so it charges my phone or tablet quickly.

i'm using one of these but the charging keeps cutting in and out. i think i may have fudged up the wiring, i wired it to an add-a-fuse but i may need to just wire it directly.
I would keep the fuse in there. You never know when these cheap electronics will crap out and could potentially start a fire. I would make sure your connections are secure. To me it sounds like loose worrying or a bad unit. I used one of those in girlfriends car, works great-I put a switch in there to cut power if not being used.
I have 4 of these. I love them. I use them with oem Samsung cables and get full charging power on 2 devices.
