[TUT] How to hide pics and videos without using any app - Galaxy Ace S5830i General

This idea came to when i found nfs shift music tracks inside its data folder but not showing up in music app.
So you just have to move any media file inside
Android/data/ any folder with name like com.dailymotion......
thats it now check you gallery the file wont be their any more.
Note-Make sure the media scanner runs after moving the file so that it doesnt show up in gallery or music.so use Stock My Files app.
Note 2-dont delete the app in whose folder you have moved your files or else they will get deleted as well

.nomedia is the correct way to do it.

.nomedia folder can be easily opened by anyone if you have enabled show hidden files.but with this method only u know where are the files.no one can randomly reach deep down there

He is not saying about the .nomedia folder
He is saying that you can do that in any folder by pasting a file named .nomedia

HOW TO - Hide Certain Media Files from Music Player and Gallery (5/30/2009)

Have you ever been listening to your Britney Spears, Daft Punk or Tupac and suddenly you start hearing files that aren't music (i.e ringtones, notification sounds, etc.)? I find it pretty annoying that there is no current method to hide these files from the music player, until now.
I would like to give credit to Scheff's Blend for this idea, and after tinkering with the the doom game folder on my memory card, I found a file called ".nomedia". Within that same folder was over 100 sound files for the game doom, BUT my music player was not reading that specific folder.
I figured it had to do something with that ".nomedia" file, and coincidentally it DID.
Instructions:
1) Download and unzip nomedia.zip somewhere onto your computer
2) Inside is a file called .nomedia, copy it into the directory of media files you want to hide
3) Reboot your phone
P.S. This also works for pictures and video files, BUT for newly taken pictures and videos, or music files added, a REBOOT is REQUIRED to hide them again.
WARNING: this completely hides the files from the phone, so they become unusable to any application until the .nomedia file is removed, and the phone is restarted. I know Scheff's Blend found a way to use those files while hiding them, yet I haven't. If anyone wants to help me out, feel free to.
I know a lot of people wanted to know how to do this, so sorry to any mod who notices I double posted, but I just realized I should have put it in this forum section to begin with. Feel free to delete the other thread in the "Dream" section.
Right on.
Another option that works is placing files you want hidden inside of a folder that starts with a period, such as ".hiddenfolder" or ".stuffimhiding"
Files and folders that begin with a period are considered hidden files by the Android OS and do not show up in Gallery or the music app
Thanks man..
was looking for a way to do this..

Thanks, thats good to know. But can they be used by lets say the dialer.apk as a ringtone?
I do the same thing with Astro. Like Dave said, keeping a folder with a dot at the front and anything within won't be read unless opened by Astro or renamed. This may not work for the ringtones, but its quicker than having to reboot if you just want to hide photos, documents, videos, etc.
I have problem where videos in folder w/ .nomedia get deleted at each reboot... Now using Cyan 4.1.11.1... Really weird. Each reboot deletes videos in those folders

Have you got go launcher or any other third party launcher? Go sms? Any other custom sms clients? I installed go sms once and now I have those strange ghost smileys on my phone. And can't you simply delete them in the gallery (or any other image viewer)?
Sent from my Galaxy Note running ICS
This is what happens when third party apps store data on your sdcard, and don't include a nomedia file in the folder they are storing them in, youwill have to either delete the files or if they keep coming back find the folder they are in and create a file with the name .nomedia with no file extension
Just be aware that if you have other media in the folder (eg. mp 3, videos etc.), they will no longer show up in other media playing apps if you add the .nomedia file.
I have a lot of music folders that have album art in them. All of the album art shows up in Gallery, which is annoying. I can't add a .nomedia file, or my mp3's won't show in music players.
I use Just Pictures most of the time as it allows you to hide folders. I only use Gallery when I am selecting a picture from an app that doesn't play nice with Just Pictures.

How to exclude picture cache file from showing up in defaulted album?

Hi, Just wondering how do I exclude particular folder like cache folder or whatsapp picture folder from showing up in defaulted album? Before ice cream sandwich I can just put a .nomedia file to the folder that I don't want to show up but this doesn't seem working on ice cream sandwich. Please help. Thanks.
Download nomedia app from the market. Then you put a .nomedia file in each folder you do not want the media scanner to scan
Sent from my LT30p using xda premium
Or skip the nomedia app and just create a file with the filename .nomedia (with the preceding full stop) in whichever folders you want to skip indexing.
You might need to reboot your phone or reset and re-index the media database by going to Settings, Apps (All), Media Storage and clearing the existing data. (The phone will need to be rebooted after clearing the database.)

Are there any apps available to run the media storage clearing and rescan? At the moment I am regularly clearing this data and using the rescan root app from market but would like this all in one process without the need to hunt through the settings. It's annoying that as new files are added to these folders with .nomedia the still appear in album unless I clear the data and rescan media.

Not that I know of. There are media rescan apps but they are largely hit and miss in my experience.
As I said above, you can do it by wiping your existing media database and then rebooting your phone. Not ideal but gets the job done.

Yep... right... I already have embedded album art in mp3 files... but at the same time I have same files (and some extra ones) in the folder... sometimes it's more convenient to have them handy...
I think I will delete all graphics files from my music folder after copying the music to my phone... that's probably easiest solution...
Thank you anyway...

Try hide it pro from the market
try create a folder starting with a dot, like: .photos.
and put the pictures there...
In the folder where you want to store and hide photos create a file called .nomedia then move the photos into the folder.
If you add the .nomedia file to an existing folder you may need to wipe Gallery data before it takes effect. Works on Sammy and HTC, haven't tried it myself on Sony.
OR, if rooted, get LUKS Manager from the market. Works like Windows Truecrypt.

Or you can download quickpic app to hid the folders for you..
it actually only create .nomedia file for you..
Install 'hide it pro' app downloading via Google play store, its free and after installation it will be renamed as audio manager, and tapping at 'audio manger' you will be able to install your password and you can view your hidden photos, videos. You can encrypt your data also.
And if you have root acess, you can hide your app downloading its plugin, located at advanced settings. Then you can launch your app calling @ ##yourpassword .

I tried Hide It Pro but prefer LUKS. Hide It just seems to change the name of your file and copy it to an obscure location, but you can still find it with a file explorer. I didn't try the encryption but it looked to me like it would only encrypt individual file(s)?
With LUKS, you create a password-protected encrypted volume (can take a while) and then you mount it. Once the volume is mounted it looks like a regular folder. You can create whatever folders you want and just cut/paste any filetype into it. Encryption is on the fly so you don't need to encrypt/decrypt files. In any file explorer, browse to a file in the volume, double-click and the file opens....pictures, music, videos, spreadsheets, text files etc, all open transparently out of the mounted volume. When you dismount the volume you cannot see inside it.
Tried changing a name of an existing folder to .saved and the folder disappear completely ?? any reason why this happened?
And tried creating a new one with .pvt ,sadly this not work, ast the folder created cant be seen?anyone experienced this problem before?
Just to clear the matter, lady friend sent me a bikini photo, not porn or any sort but since the album shows all on the Z, had a lot people want to check my phone out scanning through my photos etc which made me wonder if there is an app to ensure privacy.
Hide It Pro works well Thanks guys!! :good:

It's not possible, because Whatsapp triggers the internal media library. You could manually clean media storage and sony gallery data or use an alternative app.
I would recommend Quicpic for general pictures like DCIM and Sony Album for dirty Whatsapp Images

undisputedpro's method is better, creating a folder prevents media apps from scanning the contents with that folder present on same directory. I'm using this method since i always save pages with the UC Browser and its annoying to see that the images embedded on the page is being scanned by our phone, result is it is displayed on the Picture widget of our Home launchers and gallery apps.
Thanks for the tips.
I have this same problem with TomTom, despite all the folders have a nomedia file in them, the images still show up in album. However, the whatsapp sent folder, which also contains a nomedia file does not show up...

I use quickpic so .nomedia file works i dont use album for veiwing pics
The pictures, movies and sounds sent and recieved from whatsapp are stored in the internal SDcard in the folder Whatsapp. IF you place a .nomedia file do this in all the folders This helps for me
I second what @mrjraider had written.
The Xperia Album galery app does honor .nomedia files... but only if the .nomedia file is located on the same folder as the pictures. It will still scan subfolders underneath for pictures.
So, go to Whatsapp's Images folder (by default located in /storage/sdcard0/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images ), and create a file named ".nomedia" (dot nomedia, without quotes) there. Inside that folder, there's a Sent subfolder. You might also want to create the ".nomedia" file there.
Do likewise for ther folders inside /storage/sdcard0/WhatsApp/Media, if necessary.
Don't forget to 'close' the Album app (tap "Recent Apps" button [the rightmost one] and swipe the "Album" app to the side), before opening it again.
You'll see that the Album app honors the .nomedia files.
.
so let me check if I got it right.
I have to create ".nomedia" FILE not FOLDER in the folder that contains the pictures I want Album app to not see.
