Now I may be being stupid here. And let me know if I am.
But why on earth is there no such thing as a caller display in a blue tooth headset.
Say u have ur phone in one pocket and ur head set in another
You want to be able to see who is calling and answer without having to take out the phone.
You should also be able to do last few numbers redial so that you can make the majority of calls without taking our the phone as well.
Why is this such a difficult concept to grasp?

Cos you would have to take the headset off your ear and look at it to see who was calling?
Isnt that where most people have their headsets...
Some headsets/phones allow the caller name to be read out to you... but that assumes that you have the headset on your ear.
Did you bother to search? There are many Bluetooth headsets with Caller ID displays. Here are some pictures: https://www.google.com/search?q=blu...AWCn4HICA&sqi=2&ved=0CGoQsAQ&biw=1326&bih=931

There are two markets
One for people that constantly wear them on their head.
The other only putting it on the head once a call is coming in.
It's the second market I am in
Do you guys watch the tv show 24?
I noticed that jack bauer always uses a wired headset while terrorists always use bluetooth headsets.
Now I'm not saying you guys are terrorists or anything...but..that's a mighty big coincidence.

I have looked at those.
Most of those are not very good. (Or very old)
Maybe I should have said "decent display head sets"
The ones that have separate headphones don't count.
You need in-ear style for quick use.
I would have expected there were some excellent ones out there.
Especially with all the 7 inch tablets that are becoming more and more prevalent

What's quicker, looking down at something clipped to your shirt and pressing the answer button, or taking something out of your ear, looking at it, then putting it back into your ear and pressing the answer button?

Only a plonker would have it in his ear all the time (unless their job necessitates it)
With clipping to your shirt 12 hours a day, you'd also look like a plonker. .....
Remember - you only actually use the phone for a fraction of that time....
Its the same argument for the note 2 vs a normal phone...
You use "media" more than "calling", so it makes sense to compromise with a big phone to get the most out of the "media" functionality.
So compromise by putting ur hand in the pocket.
Plus if u have the phone in your pocket you'd have to put your hand in your pocket, so there is no real difference.

Take a look at this bluetooth watch with caller id display. There shouldn't be a reason you can't pair both a clean discrete headset and classic looking watch to provide the necessary visual call info. Extra plus, you've got the time on your wrist again.

Don't bother with that one! For one thing, you can buy it for half that price elsewhere, but it's a piece of crap at any price.
It only has BT v1 so it can't be connected at the same time as a headset. I learned that from experience, and most of the advertised features on mine don't work, even without my headset paired.

I see a big future in these types of watches
A big big future.
But the only problem with your plan is that you still have multiple devices to think about just for answering a call.

Depends on if the watch can control the headset. Phone rings, look at watch, don't want to talk, hit the ignore button. Want to talk hit the answer button and it activates the headset.
I just let my headset tell me who's calling. :victory:

Better than nothing. ..
But still means two gadgets being accessed to answer a call. ..
But I repeat. .. These watches will be big in a few years.
What I can see happening is that you have a very small earpiece which is permanently in the ear...
And the mic is on the wrist so you talk into the wrist...
It will take a bit of time to get used to but the buck Rogers generation won't mind

No.
But is this voice based?
That would be a bit awkward anyway I reckon
When you get a call. ..it rings and a voice speaks out the callers name. .
Similar settings can be made for messages
Enable driving mode (you also have notification toggle for it)... give yourself a call to see how it works

I just received my note 2 a couple of days ago. Loving it! - with a couple of small caveats:
1) Why must the stock email client suck so much? With such a great and big phone one of the main advantages for me would be to be able to email efficiently. But, first thing, you can't change the background color from black. Second, no search functionality. Third, the interface isn't beautiful. All of it: Just bad. (I come from iOS so I'm used to a very well-functioning email app). Some of the other email clients at google play seem marginally better, but none are perfect. Hope for updates and an imroved client from Samsung.
2) Then to my actual question in this thread. The earbuds/earphones that came with the phone sound great. But, they are in-ear. I know that most people prefer in-ear phones, but for me, not so much. It makes me feel shut off from the world, and if I'm listening to music on my bike for example I'm afraid I won't hear important sounds from the traffic, stuff like that. So I'd like to find some alternative earphones that are not in-ear. I tried the apple earphones from my old iPhone, and they work fine for listening to music and talking, but I can't control volume or move between songs and radio stations etc with them.
So I wonder: anybody know of earphones that work with the galaxy note 2 that are not in-ear, where the controls work and that have good sound?
headphone controls
For headphone controls, i am not sure because of the diversity of android phones that you ll find a compatible model which is a shame,
you can use this free software workaround solution : JAYS Headset Control in the playstore.
Regarding in-ear headphones and motorbiking: I did just that not too long ago and broke a time record unknowingly between two cities. It's cool what shutting off the outside world can do for your courage and concentration

On topic, picking one of these bad boys up tomorrow. Hope the bundled earphones are decent enough to continue my stupidity on and off the road
Sony's Smart headset MH-1c has both volume controls as well as a call recieve button which works with Samsung Galaxy SIII and Note II.
While they are technically in ear, I would recommend using the LG Tone+ Bluetooth Headset - the model number is HBS-730. It has APT-X codec, which is for the most part indistinguishable from wired headphones, plus they have insane 12+ hour life. To get around being aware of sound around you like at work, I just wear one earbud in and the other one magnetically clips to the headset, which is super handy. I typically use them 10-14 hours a day and am a headset fanatic. They have volume control, play/pause, and track forward and back. Plus they have good sound quality for the money even though they are bluetooth.

Hi, I had the same problem and eventually have taken matters into my own hands by making my own using the 3 button remote bundled with the phone and some Klipsch S4i's I had left over from the iPhone days. The results were so good I have bought some more S4's to customise and have listed them on eBay for sale. Finally a solution to this problem. When are the manufacturers going to realise there are millions of Samsung devices out there and start making some decent earphones for us!!
Cheers

Try Skull Candy.

Another alternative is try out the app Around Sound from the play store. It monitors external noise from the microphone and pauses your music to play that sounds to you.
I posted this in another thread, but the best retail option might be the new Samsung headphones that start coming out with the S4 - the HS330. Supposed to be better than the S3/Note 2 headphones and obviously volume and pause/answer buttons work.

Anyone know of a good device that will allow you to make and receive phone calls and possibly even provide music control and headphone jack ( not necessary)? My idea is to have something small and easy to carry if the Note2 is in a bag or you just don't want to look silly holding this massive device while on a call. Especially if you have a case that makes it even bulkier. I have been looking at this one available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005IGER78 . I don't want an in-ear BT headset or have to keep headphones w/mic on me at all times.

You're really worried about looking silly using your phone?? I was going to suggest the Samsung HM7000, it has support for playing music etc, until I saw you don't want a bluetooth headset. If you want to carry a smaller bluetooth phone with you, why not just get a different phone such as the S3 rather than carry 2 in order not to look 'silly'?

Well the case I have currently is this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009N5OX2E/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00. After using it for a few days, I'm not liking how receiving calls is pretty awkward. It's like answering a ringing check book. So now that I think more about this, instead of getting another bluetooth device for answering calls, I'm going to just get another case. I have been looking here in the forums for a case that's slim and not bulky at all. Sorta like: http://http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Feeling-Premium-Verizon-Unlocked/dp/B009POUJ5S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1357170175&sr=8-2&keywords=samsung+galaxy+note+2+case
I think the idea is still cool of having something smaller for dealing with calls and using for music. You also have the benefit of not flashing your $600 phone around for punks to steal unless you really want to show it off. I am still considering some type of bluetooth receiver, something like this one, http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Stereo-Clip-On-Bluetooth-Headset/dp/B0057WWK5E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357169902&sr=8-1&keywords=Samsung+bluetooth+adapter. The one you suggested is the exact opposite of what I would want. In-ear BT headsets like that tend to make you look like a douche

I actually have a BT headset and don't feel like a douche, but then again, I'm more of a function over form kinda guy, if something works well for me even if it's not the most fashionable item, I don't care what others think. But anyway, I can't help so much with the spare bluetooth phone, have you tried the one you linked in your OP? I can however say that getting a smaller / thinner case might help a lot, I don't have a Note 2 yet, but I was able to trial one for 10 days, so I do understand where you're coming from.

Looking for a good BT headset. I don't use them much, but am moving to a place that prohibits holding my phone in the car. My primary criteria is good voice functionality. I'd like to be able to do as much as possible without touching the phone, and preferably without touching the earpiece. Call quality should be good, but doesn't have to be best in class or anything. Mono is fine. Keep in mind that I have a very full beard, so the headset can't depend on facial contact.
I've been poring over reviews and just can't make any sense of them, so I thought I'd ask. (Motorola CommandOne seems a decent buy)
Thanks!

Thanks, I had read Vectron's review but decided it seemed more music oriented than call oriented. I'll revisit that.
Edit: Ok, now I remember the problems. It's a beard thing. On me, the mic and controls will sit under my beard. That will make it difficult to use and will probably severely diminish call quality. Darn, looks like a good one, but not worth shaving for.
Didn't have a chance to review this one yet (next to impossible to get review samples), but I heard good things about it and control remote is far away to keep it from your beard http://www.amazon.com/In-Ear-Noise-...UTF8&qid=1366911775&sr=8-1&keywords=a.m.p+iso

I wonder about mic placement on that. I *think* it's in the control unit and is meant to be clipped to your shirt. If so, that means the mic is going to be sitting down on my belly. Maybe too far away? I think I may need to stick with one of the mono units. Jawbone is out due to needing skin contact if I've understood their tech correctly.

Hello. Yesterday I have purchased a new black galaxy gear and after pairing with my note 3 and making all the necessary settings, I realized that when I raise the volume level up to the maximum (+6), I hear distortion from my calling mate.
I am referring to the sound during a phone conversation (coming from the gear's bracelet speakerphone) that seems to be quite low (only in a quite environment I can easily hear the other party) and If I raise the sound level -in my gear- during a call to the maximum , the voice of the other party is a little bit muffled.
Should I expect top notch quality from the speaker (like let's say note 3) or I shall compensate with what I get (small earpiece, poor volume level).
I appreciate any reports on that matter, to see if my device should be replaced...
Thank you in advance.

It was never built to have a GREAT speakerphone quality, It was meant mostly for the times you have your hands full, or the phone is somewhere else. It's a supplement to the phone's phone capability, not a replacement!

Yes I understand that, but I would like from other gear's owners to clarify if maximizing the sound level during a call produce a little cracking noise (especially if the other party has strong voice) at times or my gear has bad speaker and needs to be replaced.
Thank you!
Mine does the same thing when I raise it to 6. But I really don't use the watch in public because the sound quality doesn't work that well in well populated areas.
But I'll give you my opinion on what Samsung was trying to do with calling ability of the watch.
1. Chores around the house, you don't have to lug your phone around the house, leave it in a neutral room, and when you cooking, cleaning etc
2. In the office, let's say you in a meeting put your watch and phone on vibrate and you can just look at your wrist to see who is calling or if the text message is important.
3. Jobs that don't allow cell phones to be out. We'll now your phone is on your wrist, so unless your job bans wrist watches then you are good.
If you are trying to look cool in public then I'm gonna burst your bubble, you don't look cool using it with your wrist turned the other way all the way up to your ear, and then removing it and talking into it. You just look like a moron doing it.
So in conclusion the watch is good to have when you are busy or have both hands tied up when you are frying chicken.

On mine no BUT this does not mean your situation is not real. One must take into account several matters when debating this subject. The first being ones carrier. Vodafone here is useless for the quality of their call reception. Other carriers differ also.
Expectations of the owner. I find the speaker in the bracelet acceptable considering what it is. This will be personal though. Hi-Fi it is not nor is it expected to be. Have you the chance of trying another gear to see if you have a problem device, that can also happen in all devices of this nature. I hope you manage to resolve this situation.
Rgeards.
Guys, thank you both for your answers.
So, any other owners that upon raising their gear's sound level to (+5, +6) distorts the other party's sound?
Sadly, I don't have access to an other gear (friend, demo unit in a mall etc) to test out his watch, so I heavily rely on your feedback to decide upon dealing with the fuss regarding exchanging or not.
5 is where I leave mine. 6 (and notice the controls turn RED for some reason haha) can introduce a little distortion.
I use the speakerphone in the following places - car, office, home (on the couch or walking around) and it is perfect. Any type of loud environment makes it very hard to hear and I'll just use my phone.

Very good point. Not too long ago, I am bike riding with my Note 3 in my back pack.. A call comes in from my son. I answer it on the Gear, and I have hearing problems and I minus my hearing aids. However, I was able to answer the call, have a short 2 to 3 min conversation. Make call pretty well. Sure, I didn't expect the quality of sound from my Note 3, but even with my hard of hearing, I was able to hear, they heard me, calls were recieved and made, without me stopping, digging down and bring my phone out of the back pack..
The Gear is a suppliment. However, if the OP is a little skeptical, I think he should return it for another one. That doesn't cost anything but a little time and gas money, and will give the OP peice of mind that his Gear is normal..
I returned one, and I later found out that the problem was USER ERROR, but I have piece of mind.

2. does not work so well. when someone calls me, it takes even up to 8 seconds before the calling number is changed to a currently assigned name in my contacts. this is unacceptable! i want to glance at the watch and decide what next, i don't want to wait for such a long time before i can see the name.. this is clearly because contacts are not stored on device at all, everytime you request contact list, it's being streamed to you. terrible solution samsung.
3. this will not work in all places. if using phone is forbidden it does not mean you can use/make calls from tablet or smartwatch..
So guys, what your opinion?
Could this gadget be used in speaker mode in the car and in quite places without having to put it in your ear?
Thank you.

Haha, no potatoes here...
Today I am planning to return and ask for a replacement. +5, +6 is practically unacceptable (too much distortion). Comparing gear's and note 3's speakerphone mode is like comparing apple and orange, a totally different experience.
Should it be like this...?
Considering the gear has a smaller speaker not optimized for music, therfore it isn't that loud. Sometimes I can't almost hear the people I talk on the phone too at work. I will put my hand over my ear. Like if I was using an invisible phone love the gear!

Yeah, I love it too. Till now, I have changed 5 gears (different colours) to find the one that suits me best. Black is my favourite one finally...
But the speaker is for sure not loud and clear enough. My note 3 has better speakerphone quality during calls...

So they'll be promoting the new Moto Hint as part of the Moto X 2014. It's compatible with "any" BT phone, but hyped for Moto X '14 due to its listening capabilities.
$140 for an ear bud, just to make calls. If this thing played music, i'd be more interested.

I do wonder how much of the Jarvis functionality will be available with conventional bluetooth headsets.. Sure I might have to press a button to activate, but that isn't the end of the world. 3.3 hours of battery life is completely useless unless you like to carry it in your pocket until you plan to use it, then maybe.. I LOVE the concept and the always-on always-listening feature, but I see very limited use-cases for it..

i remember when BT earpieces were becoming more popular... there were some really premium models on the market, many cost more than the Hint will. Since then, vehicles have been including BT controls in the car and they've become less relevant.
to this day, when i see anyone with their BT headset in, i wonder just how important they must feel about themselves to warrant having that constantly in their ear.
Well. Regardless of price, they are still cheaper than buying a car if one's current car does not have BT. Also if one wants to feel important, perhaps not one that is barely visible?
And a friend who is an oncologist really recommends it. Probably exaggerated, but hey....
I find that this in combination with the watch should be a great replacement for looking at your phone while driving. Look at your wrist, which is in front of you anyway. Hear alerts, messages and directions in your ear. Especially those who text while driving or look at their phone for navigation. Otherwise I don't care if people I don't know think I'm silly for talking to my phone. if I don't know them, they don't matter
Im not sure I understand the hatred people have towards using Bluetooth headsets. If I'm shopping, running errands, getting in and out of the car, having both my hands available is practical and invaluable

Some folks who wear bluetooth or wired headsets need to (or are required to) for their job. It isn't a question of ego.

i think there's a difference between working for a call center and picking up your phone to answer it. i have a BT headset at my desk, at work, to use when i'm on really long conference calls. I wouldn't wander the building with it in my ear.

meh. unless i'm on-call, answering the phone is not my priority. my mom even texts me.
the hint's integration with OK Google is nice and handy and would be beneficial when i'm walking the dog or out riding, but i typically have my headphones in so that i can listen to music, so a BT device is moot (for me).

that is a personal choice and you are entitled to your opinion. just cause someone else uses a bt headset, that doesn't mean they are full of themselves or something like that

I'll be using the Moto with my old $30 HX550. OK, so I have to push a button on my ear. I'm cool with that to save $150 on a new ear-blob.
I thought about a hint, but the fact I cant get it in the same color as my X turned me off. Well, the price too. but I'd be willing to over pay a BIT if it matched my device.
