Anyone know if the Camera app can be prevented from starting on boot? (Perhaps a little contrary to the spirit of the camera, but I use it more for development than for taking pictures, and I don't like the lens motor wasting its time and wearing out its parts). Does it use the "normal" autostart mechanisms that might be disabled by something like Gemini App Manager, or is the camera start up built specially into the guts of the android version on this thing?
Don't know about the details, but enabling the screen lock (swipe to unlock) in settings stops the camera from starting when waking the device with the power button (doesn't stop the start after boot though).

Well, it stops the lens cranking out immediately on power up, but as soon as you do swipe the screen, you are in the camera app and the lens pops out. I'm looking to avoid the camera app completely. I guess if I get up the nerve to root this thing, I can try out an app manager and see if I can disable it on boot, but I'd hate to do unnatural things to the camera and then find out it didn't do any good .
If you are on the home screen when you switch off it will not open into the Camera app.

That depnds on how "off" is is. Once the suspend or hibernate or whatever it is expires and it goes "fully" off, it always starts in the camera.
Are you sure you really turned it off when it went to your homescreen without starting the camera app?
When starting from fast-startup or on a clean boot it will always start the camera app.
The only time it doesn't is if you had it in standby.
A work around is to use this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.notificationToggle
Use it to set links to your favorite applications.
When you boot to the lock screen pull down the notification bar, select the app you want, then swipe to unlock and it will open in the app you selected.
Of course it would be much easier if Samsung had simply enabled lock screen shortcuts

It would be really nice to disable the camera on boot. It would also be nice to get rid of this stupid mesage:
"SD card inserted. Change storage location to SD card?"
I thought there was a thread for that, but can't find it now.

I only started to get this message since the new update, it appears as though the SD card doesn't get initiated before the camera app loads and in turn thinks you've inserted a new card, when it finally does get loaded. Either they need to put a delay in place or somehow not load the camera app until it's established whether there is a card installed or not.
Disable the BOOT_COMPLETE permission in the camera app but make sure something else has it or you boot to a blank screen.
how can we disable a permission ?
is there a simple app for that ?

Ok;
I've found and installed Xposed framework with App Settings module.
The app that I should change permission is com.sec.android.app.camera , right ?
When I try to chenge its permissions, it says "Shared packages not yet supported"
so ?
Get the latest files a quick Google search for Xposed Framework should get you to the right thread as I don't have it to hand and try it then. The settings asp changes from "Xposed Settings" to "Asp settings" in the latest version.

but it does not change shared packages.
where else can I find it ?

my version is app settings 0.4 and it is also discussed here that "shared packages are not supported":

are you sure that it is working for you ?

Okay so that's Android 4.2.2.
Go to settings, info,software information.
In software information touch more.
Then you must touch up to 10 times in a row on Build Number.
The developer settings must be now in the normal settings.

Do you have an overlay app installed? Pie controls, Glovebox, Sidebar or something like that? If so, pause or force stop it and install your apk and then resume the app.

I have no applications as you indicate.
it become complicated, however it is possible as this native application is integrated into some 4.2.2 ROM on HTC ONE
Your signature says you have a NavBar. I don't have a HTC One yet. Hopefully it'll come this week, but I do know that the HTC One doesn't have a navbar and if you have one, that could possibly be the culprit. Especially if it's the type that pops up when you hit a certain part of the screen like Paranoid Android Pie Controls. Usually these types of apps pause themselves when you're trying to install something, but it could be a bug, or something that hasn't been configured to pause and restart when installing something.
I'm not 100% sure this is the culprit, but it's a good possibility that you have an overlay app and just don't realize it. Pop up widgets, Unity type launchers, anything that pops up when you touch a certain part of the screen, but isn't shown otherwise.

Hi,
I recently got a wireless charging receiver for the phone and now I get this annoying popup which says to close the micro usb properly to prevent water damage.
This happens also sometimes during charging in the middle of the night.
Can anyone tell me how to disable the popup? To make it clearer, it is not the flashing text that appears when the phone is connected to the charger. ( this can be disabled via xposed module)
The one I am talking about is more like a text with a white background picture.
"for protection against water damage firmly seal the charging cover before use"
Anyone else with the "problem" ?
I am on NEE-I9295XXUBMK2.

^Mostly what I was going to say, so thanks.
You should check EnhancedToast if you can, and you could always switch ROM's - I'm loving the CM 10.2 ROM, which doesn't have the warning, and offers a lot of other advantages. If a notification comes up in the bar, long-press it and see if comes up with the "app info" button - it could be run through some sort of stock app that you could disable or uninstall altogether.

How should I backup? Meaning there's lot's of data:

Maybe someone could explain the best practice to backup ROM,OS and apps.

What method of rooting your phone did you use? They are not the same thing, but it is possible to do them both at the one time. If everything looks different, then yes, you would have changed your ROM while rooting.

This problem appeared/reappeared when i upgraded from 4.2.2 to 4.3 (ML2)
After rooting ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2690133 )
and disabling KNOXagent it still gives this warning, which it did not do after the 4.2.2 Active Root.
This is merely an annoyance but if someone figures out a quick way to disable it that would be grand.
i have this issue too. cant wait for a fix for this. just updated to 4.3 a few days ago and having to tap the bubble everytime is just annoying. why the hell would they add these rediculous notifications? its not like att or samsung will stand behind the "waterproof" claim anyway..... water damage weather the door is open or closed means your screwed no matter what.
I've personally tried using the "EnhancedToast" module for xposed and the prompts do not register as toast events. It has to be something else.
There are a lot of threads here and in the VZW forum about how terrible this device is, etc, without root. I'm a former flash-a-holic and my last several devices have all been Samsung on stock, albeit rooted, firmware. those of us preferring touchwiz have our reasons, and those who prefer aosp have theirs, but this isn't a "why we can't have aosp" thread, this is about making lemonade with what we have.
so, my reasons for wanting root, and how I worked around them:
1. ad blocking. I LOVE adaway, its seriously the first app I'd install on a new device after rooting. without root, give adblock plus a try. you can turn off the status bar notifications in the app and by ticking the box in the app manager.
its simple enough to disable apps on WiFi, just input the proxy host name and port and you're done. I hadn't ever found a clear and concise instruction on how to do this with mobile data, so here it is- create a NEW APN and copy all of the info from the stock APN, and add the proxy host name and port. done, you now have ad blocking on WiFi and mobile data, without root, and without persistent notifications.
2. de-bloating. first, the s5 has less bloat than the s3 or s4, but its still there. it is INCREADIBLY easy to disable or uninstall on this device. go to the app drawer and press the settings icon (or long press the app switcher button) and select uninstall/disable apps. if its ATT or Samsung, and you don't want it, odds are you can either uninstall or disable it. just make sure that in Samsung Apps you disable automatic updates over WiFi. you can also hide them.
myth busting time: IF you were rooted, and IF you manually removed bloat apps, you do NOT gain ANY additional usable space in device storage.
3. tether bypass. there are multiple threads here on how to do this. I have a 10gb plan so its a non issue here.
4. Writing to extSDcard. most built in apps like the browser, email, and camera will save to the ext SD card. so will my files, which is actually a LOT better than on the s3 or s4.
5. removing bloat bookmarks from the stock browser. I prefer the stock browser over chrome, call me crazy. I also don't like the 4 pre-loaded bookmarks being in my list. I saw a tip here to just create a folder called My Bookmarks or whatever you like and put your bookmarks there. the bloat is still there but its not staring you in the face.
so what else have you guys been doing to get functionality that was easy and convenient with root, but still attainable without?

Speed- I find that a lot of people nag about speed, my phone is fluid in all ways. Three factors play into this, using the TW launcher, animation speed, one last tricky one-- S-Voice has a delay on the home button waiting for the possible hook in for user prompting it. My standpoint is you can get from a TW rom the kind of speed or more that you can with a rom somebody else pre-tweaked for you.
Remedies below.
1. Get Nova Launcher (you can look into others if you like, if you want an experienced users perspective on speed, use Nova it flies)
2. Enable Developer Options(click About Device, click build number until it says Dev mode is enabled), Turn OFF animations for Transition window animation scale, transition animation scale and animator duration scale.
3. Open up S Voice (through the double-tap shortcut or in the app drawer). Tap the menu button in the top right corner (three dots) and find the "Open via home key" option under "Wake-up." Disable for slightly faster home button response.
Some people may find this abrupt transition between applications off putting at first but once you give it an hour the phone is flying so fast I could never go back. Enjoy!
As mentioned above:
Nova Launcher
Transitions at .5 or OFF
De-bloating (see this thread)
And - tasker, tasker, tasker!
My tip.. simple but I'm a customize nerd.
iFont available for free from the Play store allows you to add hundreds of fonts to your phone right from the app, and is compatible with the font selection from settings - display. You can also load fonts from the internet or your computer and use that as your default font.

This could be due to your SD card. If you are saving pics to external SD and your card is a lower class it will read and write data in a longer time frame. If you are using internal memory and not the SD card slot then I'm not sure. Backup everything and try a factory reset. I personally don't have an SD card, I don't see the need without root. Also it takes about 3 seconds for me to do what takes you 15. That's why I think an SD might be the Culprit here
There is 1 thing you can not do without root that is needed for me. I own a Pioneer Appradio and use ARUnchained which requires root. If you don't know what it is then look it up. It basically mirrors your phone and lets you use touch on Pioneers Appradio. I used this with my GS3 and if I would have known we wouldn't have root after this long I would have kept it and not bought the GS5. There is no getting around root for this. Pioneer's stock app has restrictions and doesn't let you mirror everything where as ARUnchained solves this problem.

The menu button function is still there ... just long-press the recent apps button. If you've got a specific app that doesn't display the 3-dots menu somewhere on the screen, you might want to reach out to the developer. That's part of modern Android UX standards. I recently reached out to Untappd and they updated their app to include it pretty quickly.

Ah, gotcha. Unfortunately, short of root reassigning buttons, I don't think that's a desire that will see much traction in the future now that the UX standards require on-screen menus and more devices are coming out without any soft buttons at all. When you get down to it though, you're either tapping the bottom-left of your device or you're tapping the three dots on the screen.

For me a workaround was to make sure the app I want notifications from is running, then press the recents button and find the app on the list, then swipe the app down, it will only move a little way then spring back and also obtains a small padlock icon.
You will probably also need to go to the settings menu and find either protected apps or app settings (depends if you are using the Lollipop version or the Marshmallow beta) and enable the setting for the app which makes it stay awake when the phone sleeps.
Thanks so so much. I try this out
You have tomark the app to run in background...
this is no bug it is an energy saving feature.
the device has a stock white list of apps allowed to run in background.
but normally you re asked if an app should be able to run in background or not.
any app that is not allowed to will be closed immediately in standby

I've tried all of the above and still was missing viber notifications. Then I disabled Phone Manager and this sorted out the problem completely.

Wouldn't you need to root the phone and then use an app like TitaniamBackup to disable it?

That's the way.
Hey guys,
I've successfully built something similar to Google Pixel's Fingerprint Notification Gesture. Just install the APK, grant it root access and you're good to go.
NOTES:
There's a similar app made by another developer, and this is in no way affiliated to it. End product is the same though it's accomplished in different ways. Read further to know the differences.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Nexus 6P rooted with SuperSu
2. Android 6.0+ (should work with lower APIs too - haven't tested)
BUGS:
It takes a while to start listening for fingerprints after a complete boot and after you unlock your phone. In the former case, it takes longer for the service to start.
DESCRIPTION:
We all have heard about the Google's new Pixel's fingerprint swipes to accomplish tasks. For the ones who aren't aware, the Pixel lets you swipe down it's fingerprint sensor to simulate a swipe down on your notification bar / status bar to pull it down and a swipe up, to pull it up. This app accomplishes something similar.
A single short tap on the sensor pulls down the notification / status bar and a long press on the sensor pulls it back up, irrespective of whether the finger in subject is registered for authentication or not.
DISCLAIMER:
Make sure you always take a backup before testing. Thumb rule. I'm not responsible if you screw up your handset!
DOWNLOADS:
Fetch it from here.
Cheers and let me know.
worked on 7.0 (purenexus rom) with phh root r259 trough magisk. not only SuperSU.
i was eager to see if ur solution can detect swipe direction but that seems to really need hardware capabilities the 6P doesnt have sadly. looks like our sensor cant even detect swipes. just short taps and long taps.

Yes indeed. After installing the APK in the system was working perfectly! Thank you!
Can anyone give an estimate on how long it takes to start working? Is there no way to force it to turn on?
Actually any info would be good. All i did was install the apk, reboot, a few minutes later supersu prompt came up. Nothing happens with the fingerprint sensor. Its going on 15 minutes.

Any other mods in relation with the fingerprint sensor on your phone? If not, it should work. Tested it on my friend's Nexus 6P today, it works fine. Try tapping the app in the Apps Drawer and then tap the fingerprint sensor? Do check out if the required permissions are granted by the Android system. Let me know.

Still not working. I did have a fingerprint app (forget exact name) but I uninstalled it. Which permissions specifically? When I go into it there are no permissions except to say it uses fingerprint sensor. It was granted superuser. Ive tried the shortcut numerous times.
A little more info--running PureNexus MM with elementalx and xposed (nothing that uses fingerprint) but plenty of gestures including swipe2wake, double tap wake.

Okay, quite uncanny. Even I'm running ElementalX, shouldn't be the thing. Kindly try reinstalling it?
There's a small bug I've spotted - if the feature doesn't work when the densornis tapped upon, simply lock and unlock your phone as a quick solution.
I'm sorry for this inconvenience. Will work on it to solve these bugs.

How do you get root access if it's a system app? I copied the apk to priv-app folder in system, rebooted, then installed the app as an update. Tried to get root access, but couldn't.

I gave it root access before installing it as a system app. But it works fine for me, not had any problems with root or anything. I should say though I'm using fingerprint quick action.

That's the one I'm using...do you just install the app first, then move the base.apk to priv-app folder? I tried moving the whole app folder over, but it didn't work. Thanks. BTW, I'm using EX File Explorer with root access to move the file.

Just move the PixelSwipe.apk into the /system/app/ directory. That works well for me.
Working as it's supposed to, no problems thus far.
Installed as a system app on the 7.1.1 dev preview.
Hey OP any chance of adding a double tap function in the future?

Thanks Jackson.Armstrong.Blow!
Yeah it's possible, might have to play around a bit. But what's the expected feature with the double tap? Say, launch an app or lock the screen? Let me know. :good:

Personal I would love it to launch the weather home screen widget, but to launch and app or function even (ie screen off, flashlight, settings, screenshot, google now/assistant QS Tiles etc.) would also be welcomed
