[Q]Queries about flashing ROM - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello I am newbie here.I know there is a thread for how to instal CWM recovery & how to flash custom roms, but I find that method very confusing . I have upgraded my phone to Gingerbead 2.3.6 using ODIN player (Build number:- DDKQ8). I have already rooted my phone using that zip file method. Now I want to install CWM recovery v5.0.2.6. Here are my questions.
1. Do I need to install CWM recovery v 4.0.0.9 first & then need to update it to 5.0.2.6 ? If so, how to do that?
2. After installing CWM, I want to backup my current OS,which is an official GB 2.3.6 update provided by Samsung for my country. How to backup it?
3.I still use 2GB sd card,so how much space is needed in my sd as well as internal memory while installing custom rom?
4.After installing new rom will my data stored in sd card (app backup files, music files, pictures etc.) get erased?
5.Please suggest me a good custom rom which has:- great battery backup, good interface, exciting features, fast response etc.)
Thanks in advance!

WellCome..
1) No, you can directly install 5.0.2.6..
2) In recovery You will get options for backup and restore..this will take the backup of your current rom and you can restore at any time through it..
3) No need to make any free space..if you are not using any ext partition..
4) Not At all..it wont touch your sd card data..
5) It depends on You,Which Rom you like..read their thread for more info of the rom..

Sorry for asking u again, I am going to flash Apocalypse final 9.7.2012 ROMhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700749 , but I have few questions. The installation procedure is as follows:-
Installation Procedure - Step 1 (rom)
1. boot into CWM5 Recovery
2. wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik
3. format cache/data/system/sd-ext
4. MOUNT DATA
5. flash APOCALYPSE-17.06.12
5. reboot and complete the setup wizard
What is mount data? I can't see that option in CWM 5 or is it suppossed to be mount/data ?
also it's a barebone ROM, so from where i can find essential apps like sms, mms, camera? also does bareback ROM contain google apps like gmail, gmaps, navigation etc. ?
Thanks in advance!

First time ROM flash

I'm currently preparing to flash my first rom and have a few questions. I have searched the forums and gathered a lot of information. However, I would just like some solid answers to a few questions so that I know I'm not reading something wrong.
Some details of my phone:
PDA: XWJVB
PHONE: XXJVK
CSC:XEEJV3
Rooted with Chainfire's CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVB-CL118186 [email protected] #2
1. Can I flash any rom onto my phone regardless of what my current firmware is? If not, what type can I flash?
2. I've done a nanoid back up and a titanium backup. Am I right in thinking the nanoid backup will only be required if something goes wrong?
3. Do I need to copy the two backups to my computer?
4.When I did the nanoid backup it came up with No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext. Is this important?
5. When everything gets wiped off my phone will my external sd get wiped too or shall I just take that out? If not should I make a complete backup of that too so I don't lose my music and pictures etc?
Sorry for all the questions but I don't want to leave anything to chance as you can imagine. Any help would be appreciated.
1. Can I flash any rom onto my phone regardless of what my current firmware is? If not, what type can I flash?
- Flash a New 2.3.4 from samfirmware
2. I've done a nanoid back up and a titanium backup. Am I right in thinking the nanoid backup will only be required if something goes wrong?
- If you read a some guides how to flash, all will be working, its a hard to brick a SGS, but:
* If you use titanium backup: just backup your user apps
* Nandroid backup is a backup of your current system
3. Do I need to copy the two backups to my computer?
- If you want .
4.When I did the nanoid backup it came up with No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext. Is this important?
- Nandroid backup are safe at your internar SD, no at external
5. When everything gets wiped off my phone will my external sd get wiped too or shall I just take that out? If not should I make a complete backup of that too so I don't lose my music and pictures etc?
- Flash via Odin, just makes your phone clean. Its only wipe your current installed apps, and settings, it dont wipe a SDCard and External_SDCard, then dont worry about your pictures and music,
1) each rom will give instructions on requirements and flashing instructions, the short answer is no, you can't just flash any rom
2) the nandroid is a complete system image, similar to windows restore to a previous working version, so it is your 1st line of defense if things go wrong
3) always worth copying everything to
Your computer for safety
4) it doesn't matter, unless you format your ext sd, it won't get wiped
5) as above, and nor will your part of the internal sd, just the system part

OK thanks for your replies guys,
For example I've just looked at Juwe's Smart Edition > v5.3 ROM, the instructions state:
Code:
INSTALLATION FROM GINGERBREAD
1) Download my ROM and put it to intSD card
2) If you don't have CWM, flash some kernel with CWM support with Odin
3) Go to CWM and flash my ROM
4) After reboot go to CWM and make wipe cache and wipe dalvik-cache
So does that mean I can flash this ROM and then just use TM to restore my stuff? Sorry to be a pain but I haven't got my head around the compatibility issue yet.

1. Install Rom Manager, and from there flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
Enter ClockworkMod recovery. (reboot in recovery, or boot while holding power + volume down button) In ClockworkMod recovery select backup/restore and then backup (you can navigate using the volume buttons and power button)
2. Pretty much the same as 1. A nandroid backup (recovery backup) backups everything. But, if you only want a backup of your apps and data you could always use Titanium Backup.
3. With My Backup you can backup your contacts etc.
4. Download the rom onto your SD card. The rom will be in zip format, no need to unpack it.
From there boot into recovery, select the options:
factory reset/wipe data (root will not be erased)
Wipe cache
Advanced --> wipe dalvik
And then select the option install zip from SD card and choose the right SD card. (internal or external)

1. How do I save my stock rom (2.3.4)?
To save your stock rom you need Rom Manager. Once you have installed Rom Manager you must "Flash ClockworkMod recovery. Once you have done that, you must swithch your phone off. Once it is off, press and hold the volume up (+) and down (-) button while holding the power button. Do this for about 10 seconds and it will boot into ClockworkMod recovery. Once in there go to "backup and restore" and then "backup" Now after that you will have a nandroid backup.
2. How do I backup all my apps and data?
To backup all your apps and data use Titanium Backup . Once you have installed Titanium Backup, go to "backup/restore" push the options key on your phone and then press"Batch". Now select "Backup all user apps/system data".
3. How do I backup my sms , contacts etc ?
Use MyPhoneExplorer Client. You need to also install the software on your computer. Once you have done that. Open it on your phone and connect your phone to your pc. Then open the software on your computer and click sync.
4. How do I put the new rom ?
Oce you have got ClockworkMod recovery installed you can flash a new rom.
Do a full wipe in recovery mode (wipe data, cache, dalvik) but you can always restore your data with titanium backup. What you also could do in case everything goes wrong (I highly doubt it) is to make a total rom backup which you would have done if you did the back up like I said in question 1. You can also press "backup rom" in Rom Manager. In my signature there is a "rom" and "kernel" which I use. You could try that if you want.
Good Luck
ok i got a question, i have a nandroid backup of the stock rom ive used before, android 2.3.4 and if i restore using clockworkmod everything will be okay

No, it depends on what rom you using. You would have to change the partitions back.

Yes, you need to flash a backtoext3 converter (try this) before restoring your original backup, as CM7 uses ext4 for the system-partition.
The backup includes everything you need: the boot-image including kernel (boot-partition) the firmware/OS (system-partition), user-apps, settings and data (data-partition). The only iffy part may be apps installed on the SD-card. To be absolutely sure move all apps to internal storage before backup. (This step is more than likely not needed, but it's good practice to have a complete backup and not have files dangling here and there.)
As for downloaded game-data, unless you format your sd-card (or move or delete the data in any way), the data will still be there when you come back to CM7 (if you do).
First press VOLUME DOWN and then POWER button altogether. You will enter RECOVERY MODE. On this mode, wipe all data (data, cache, dalvik, etc). There are 3 wipe data menus, take them all.
After wipe data success you should have stock rom working
Good Luck

[Q] Miui ROM?

Right, ive rooted my note, and im looking for an iPhone type Miui theme rom, ive looked at how to install the new rom and i have no idea what to do, it says that i cant flash on stock ICS ROM, currently running 4.0.1 atm, and it also says something about Aroma Installer. i am a big newb when it comes to this, i dont wanna f**k my phone up so can someone help me and tell me what to do please?
Firstly remove the stock kernel, thats what it is referring to, So flash something safe like Philz or Hydracore.
And also, Aroma installer is something that will appear when flashing via CWM, it is a neat feature which allows you to pick and choose optional extras to install, or to remove certain things from installing.
Once it appears just follow the instructions, its simple really.
when i rooted it i changed to franko kernel? what do i need to flash Miui ROM Vengeance Note v2_4-08 09 2012? im downloading that atm
Go with something popular like philz or hydracore, it will be overwritten once the ROM installs anyway.
Make sure to do the wipes (if necessary)
so i install that kernel, then flash the rom using cwm and it says to do a wipe, how do i wipe it?
In recovery there are several options, you will need to wipe data / Factory reset, then wipe cache, then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
You may also need to format /system and /preload, you will find these under the mounts and storage menu

i still have no idea what to do.. all i know is when doing a new rom install in from sd card is all i know, i need an easy to understand explaination lol because what you're saying is just letters to me, if you can tell me how to do it because i dont know what im doing..
Okay, so you're completely stock now right? If so, head over to original android development section and download either philz kernel for your version (find this in settings > about phone) or hydracore kernel (this needs to be flashed with odin unless you are already rooted with Cwm recovery, if not just use philz)
Once downloaded place on your internal sd card, power the phone off, hold volume up + home + power all at once until you enter recovery.
Now select apply update from sd card or update . zip (can't remember which one) once flashed do the same procedure again, this time you will notice how different it is.
Now either mount usb storage in recovery (under mounts and storage) or reboot the phone to use mtp / mass storage.
Place MIUI rom in your internal sd card, reboot into recovery, select wipe data / Factory reset (will remove all apps and data, not media, so backup what's important before hand)
Now select wipe cache, then go to advanced and select wipe dalvik cache.
Now go to install zip from sd card, then choose zip from internal sd card, find the MIUI rom and flash it.
Once done, reboot and wait upto 10mins for it to boot properly.
Double check to MIUI thread for install instructions as you may need to format system and preload too when performing the full wipe in recovery.

oh my word...you typed all this from your phone? hoped you were using a bluetooth keyboard...
good luck paul on your install
thanks azz for typing this up..definitely bookmark worthy.

If you want to flash any ROM that isn't KitKat, then just download it and flash it in recovery (just follow the ROM flashing instructions)
If you want to flash KitKat, then you must first flash Raw Kernel r3p2 test build.
1-Download the rom and put it in your sdcard.
2-Reboot into recovery and make nandroid backup (go to restore and buackup => misc nandroid settings and check include preload then go back and select backup)
3-wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvic cache and then format /system partition and /preload partition.
4-select install zip and then select your rom w/o gapps.
NB:
if you are using Philz recovery, the nandroid backup will be saved to your externel sdcard.
/preload partition is used by Touchwiz roms that is why you have to backup this partition.

Never, ever format the system.
If you're on stock just do that:
1-Reboot in recovery
2-Choose Wipe data/factory reset
3-Flash cm rom
4-Flash gapps
5-Reboot
Done, that's it.
If you want to update cm roms (or any rom):
1-Reboot in recovery
2-Flash cm update
3-Choose Wipe cache & dalvik cache
4-Reboot
Done.
You don't need to mess up with anything more.
P.S. better use twrp 2.7 from novafusion, for better compatibility.

Thanks but it still doesn't work. I want to flash the rom but the rom file its in the external sd card and it says that there are no files found. And when i hook up the phone to my pc the phone is detected, however I can´t acess the sd card.
Maybe if there's a way for me to acess the ext. sd card and change the rom file for the internal memory it would work. Do you know how can i do this?

Euhm, it might be a weird idea, but you take your external SD-card, put it in your card reader, connect the card reader to your pc, and copy the zip to (let's say) the root of the SD-card
CWM should be fine, but I'm used to TWRP. You can find it on the novafusion website. (search novafusion TWRP)
If you can't boot into CWM or TWRP, or files still don't show up on the browsermodule in the recovery rom, you still have the possibility to flash your ROM using odin. Check the installation guide on novafusion, it gives you a link to all the files you need and a detailed description how to install your rom.
