[Q] I have Rooted the Nook (SDCARD) but I cant get Clockworkmod to work

So I have installed the Rom on the SDCard and I can see the Rom Manager but I took the SD Card out and put the Google App zip from here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version on the SD Card booted the nook back and then went into Rom Manager to "Boot Into Recovery" but nothing happens the system just reboots and I don't get that screen with the orange text to let me install the apps from the SD card.
Keep in mind that I rooted the nook the soft way buy making a bootable SD card.

It doesn't sound like you've actually rooted the nook - you've just booted into an alternate ROM on the SD card. If you want to get into CWM, you can either create an SD card which has CWM and will launch it when you boot with the SD card in, or you can install it to internal memory so the SD card isn't necessary.

Thanks for the notes. I basically figured out I didn't really need it if I used the trick of turning the unit on while holding the N button. As a follow up question. Now that I have everything setup can I make an image of this SD Card and put that image on a bigger faster card? Or will I need to start over?

If you use dd just to copy the raw data on the SD card, you'll get the advantages of faster speed, but the partition will be the exact same size. If you want to take advantage of the bigger space, you'll need to partition the SD card and copy the files manually.

So I don't know much about dd although I have seen it on the site before so I can look that up. As for the partitioning tool I know the first partition has to be 'boot' not sure on what size it has to be or any other specifics do you know any of that data? Also thanks for taking the time to answer all of this. I am hoping that this will stop some of the Force Close issues I am seeing.

The easiest way is to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957 to install CM7 to your SD card. The image takes care of creating the partitions of the appropriate size. As for writing the image itself, you can follow any guide for dd, or use WinImage on Windows which is probably a bit easier to follow.

Yeah but I wanted to know if I could copy all my date over. Just by like copy and paste sort of thing. In other words I dont want to get to carried away on installing all this stuff then have to redo everything once I get a better card.

[Q] Unable to boot off of bootable CWM SD Card

I formatted and re-imaged my nook today from 1.0.1 Rooted to stock.
I then manually updated to 2.1 for flash capability.
Now I want my Root back.
For some reason the NOOK won't boot off of the SD Card anymore, it just ignores it until it's booted and I can see the files on the SD card.
I've imaged my SD Card with multiple versions of CWM, shut off my nook, inserted the SD card and plugged in a USB cable to initiate the process.
Is it possible that it requires the "Nook" USB cable to start the boot off of SD Card process or will the cable for my Droid Incredible work as well?
It's the only thing i can think of at this point that is causing the problem.
I won't get my nook cable till tomorrow so i can't test it.

You don't need the cable to boot off the sd card, all the cable does is turn the thing on.
You are probably not flashing your card right, it's not simply a matter of copying files over, there is data that needs to be put on the card that isn't part of the files you can see.
If you are using an old nooter or autonooter card, it's probably corrupted or something. You don't want to use those old rooting processes anyhow.
The rooting process is also different now than in previous releases. You should do some reading on how to make a bootable cwm card and what the new rooting process for 1.2 is.

I believe you are right, the sd card isn't being flashed correctly.
I tried following the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
Still got the issue where the nook would completely ignore the sdcard yet read it once it was booted.
So i tried formatting the sdcard with my Droid Incredible, then flashed it using windiskimger using the instructions provided in the link above.
Now when i try to boot off the card i get a blank black screen(never gets to "Read Forever" screen.
I have to remove SD Card, hold power button in(10 sec), release and then hold Power button in again(10 Sec) to get the nook to boot back into 1.2
I'm considering doing the 8 failed boot thing and seeing if it will restore 1.0.0 or something at this point.
Any suggestions?

Well that's progress ;-) at least it's trying to boot from the sd card now even if it's not succeeding.
are you using your droid as a uSD adapter for your computer, or do you have a dedicated uSD reader? that might be your problem. I'd try using a separate card reader.
You can get something like this basically anywhere for under $10. Try target/walmart/kmart/staples or like i said basically anywhere ;-)
I don't use windows for flashing but i've noticed some people saying they have luck with some programs for flashing more than others, try reading around, maybe you'll find an alternative to windiskimager that works better for you.
P.S. Formatting before flashing doesn't do anything at all. The flash should erase anything on the card and replace it exactly with the contents of the image you are flashing, regardless of whether it's freshly formatted or filled with 10 years of irreplaceable photographs

I'm not so sure it's the sdcard reader(which is internal to my Dell Laptop)
I switched from a 8gb sd card to a 2gb sd card(to make sure the SD card wasn't causing a problem) and pulled down a SD version of Nookie Froyo 2gb(to make sure CWM wasn't the issue either) just to see if i could get the thing to boot.
Same thing as occurred again.
It's become apparent that Winimage is either not doing it's job or I've somehow miss-configured the thing to not work correctly.
Winimage seems to only be writing one partition to the sdcard. In addition the Nook won't even attempt to boot off the sd card unless it's been formatted by either the nook or my droid prior to imaging. To me this indicates winimage isn't actually writing a image as much as it is copying files(and only the 1st partition at that).
Next step is to Uninstall Winimage, removing an left over configuration files and re-installing. If that doesn't work I'm going to try switching computers.
If that doesn't work then i'm going to look for a new Imaging program.
If anyone has any insight, it'd be welcome.

Well I can officially state my opinion that WinImage sucks...
I downloaded WinDiskImage and within 5 minutes I had my Nook 2.1 Rooted.

[Q] Guide Request

Could someone point me toward a guide that include the step by step instructions on how to reformat your microSD card after a CWM image has been burnt onto it to get it back to it's original size/recognizable in the Nook/PC.
This to me is the most frustrating part of loading ROMs on the Nook and I don't believe it's laid out step by step in any guides. They simply leave it at downloading a partition manager software tool, but not what do to within that tool.

I would actually recommend just buying a cheap card that you use just for flashing images. Rather than backing up, image burning, then reformatting your card each time you want to do something in CWM, spend the $6 online and buy a cheap 2GB card that you use only for this purpose. I know it isn't required, but I still use a bootable SD card with CWM recovery on it to flash new nightlies or really anything else.
I know this doesn't answer your question, but it is my solution to this problem.

While I agree you should consider a new card in case things ever go south, you should be able to put it into a card reader and format it with Windows. You can also wait until the NC is booted up and then insert the card and format it with the NC.

I actually do have a dedicated cheap card with CWM loaded on it. The problem I ran into this time was that someone had approached me with a stock nook wanting a ROM loaded onto it. So I needed yet another card to burn a root image onto. So I was stuck having to burn that image on an 8GB not so cheap card and then could never get it back to 8GB or recognizable in my PC/Nook by using various software packages.
It also causes all sorts of FCs when inserted into the Nook running MIUI. Once it's removed they go away.
Regardless, if anyone knows of a guide or the steps to doing so that actually works, it would be appreciated and I have to imagine I'm not the only one who runs into this extremely frustrating issue.

but cant you boot into default nook, not booting off the microSD card and reformat the microSD card?
even if you rooted/formatted the built-in memory for android/cm7 over the nook color OS, you should be able to format the card.
the other question that i have the the OP
have you tried to access the card from all os (win, mac, linux) both through a usb adapter and through the nook directly connected to the pc/mac?

I have not had that issue with either a USB card reader or with the Nook. Do you have access to a camera that uses micro SDHC cards? You can usually format it there as well. After that, Windows should recognize the card in a reader and let you delete any folders the camera placed on it.

I think we need a little more information about what you are trying to achieve?
If you are looking to get your uSD back to its "fresh off the rack from the store" state, the easiest thing to do would be to just use your NC to reformat the card from within it's "Settings" area.
But, if you have loaded CM7 (or whichever ROM) onto the eMMC of your nook, then you would need to use Android's tools to do this.
When using an imaging tool to prepare the uSD, I would recommend Image Writer for Windows to write your ROM images to the uSD. It is pretty easy to use, and way better than WinImage. Use the 0.3 (Lost) release.
In my case, I just used verygreens solution of installing CM7 to my uSD, it is a one time set up and I only have to drop new nightlies onto the /boot partition whenever I want to upgrade (which is everytime a new nightly comes out, heh). I never take my uSD out of the NC anymore.
If you are looking to repartition your uSD card to get a bigger /boot partition so you can rest assured that the bigger nightlies will fit (essential if you have alternate image and ramdisk files for the alternate boot scenario), then I would follow this post in verygreen's guide.

In response to some of the questions, I am trying to get my SD card back to off the shelf so it can be used in the Nook for storage.
I have not tried on another OS to format the card. I only have Windows XP on my laptop. I could try on my Windows 7 desktop but would be very surprised if that solves the issue. I cannot see it when it is plugged in via USB adapter to my PC.
I have MIUI 1.7.22 ROM loaded on the eMMC of my Nook and using Android's format option does not work as it is greyed out.
Nothing recognizes it except for Easus Partition Manager, but I've tried everything under the sun (Deleting Partition/Wiping Partition/Assigning Drive Letter/Increasing size) and can't get it to return to a usable state.

In Android, I think you have to unmount the uSD before you can "erase" it (thus effectively re-formating it to it's maximum size).
I would do it this way if you are able to, because you are guaranteed a uSD card that Android will recognize every time. Devices that use removable cards this way know how to properly format them. Desktop OSs treat them as removable media (i.e. like disks/discs) and do not always format them properly using a a USB adapter.
When formating SD/uSD cards on your PC, your best bet is to use an actual card reader that connects to your PC via a USB cable (like the multi-card readers).
Here is a formatting tool specifically for SD/uSD cards from the SD Association website (https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/). Instructions are at their website too.
Incidently, if you have access to a Mac system running OS X, the Disk Utility app in Applications > Utilities will also format your uSD and get it back to stock where Win machines have problems. I know this from personal experience.

Short of a Mac system, you could install Linux (I recommend Ubuntu currently) in a VirtualBox virtual machine environment and give that a go in your Win7 environment. If you go this route, you also want to install the Extention Pack for USB 2.0 support. Then you end up with a more versatile OS for tinkering around in all within your Win7 evironment....

Please respond to the following. I tried a lot to look the answer to my problem in the forums, but could not find it (or did not get the right forum)
I dual booted my NC with CM7.1.0. It was working fine without any problem, but suddenly stopped entering into the main screen. Whenever i on the nook the Cyanogen loading ... screen comes and then screen flashes and turns lit black.. the NC is not off but it does not reach to the main system. I tried to use update the CM by copying a new file to usd, but it did not let me do so.. computer hanged. I do not want to format it as it has some .xls files in documents folder in the 4th partition of usd. Can someone please tell me how to extract those files using computer's sd car slot ( I can not use nook usb option as it is not booting CM) and how to recover the older working condition.

I assume you have stock working on emmc. I have a flash file that you can temporarily flash to stock to make it read the fourth partition of the SD as 'sdcard'. Go to my tips thread linked in my signature and item B3 in the second post (last paragraph). It tells you how to modify stock to read that partition. If your stock is rooted, you can just edit the file yourself. If not rooted, you need to flash one of the files attached to the post. Instructions are there. After retrieving your files you can revert stock back to normal by re-editing the file or by flashing a second zip, or just keep it that way and use partition four for both systems. Then you can start over with your verygreen SD and reinstall CM7.

I am new to Android.. .sod could not understand many things that you wrote in your posts... but thanks a lot for finding the time and writing me back..I did not get it how can i solve my problem. I just want to copy one of my files from the sd card and then I will format and install all dual boot files from start... Please let me know if you can give me any simpler way to access and copy my .xls file and restore the cm in previous working condition( this will save me from installing from the start).... rgds

We'll take this one step at a time. Do you have stock nook still on your internal memory? And if you do, is it rooted or just virgin stock?

Thanks for being so patient. I dont think it is rooted and the stock nook is touched as i follow a link provided in this forum to boot usd and dual boot nook without losing warranty to install cm7 on a usd.
When i use boot the nc, i see following responses
1. boot without usd: boots to original nc, all files and applications are there and work perfectly fine.
2. boot with usd without going to boot menu: cyanogen loading banner shows up and then screen flashes. .then a lit black screen .. nothing happens after that
3. boot with usd and selecting emmc in boot menu: boots to original nc but hangs at home screen
4. boot with usd and selecting sd (external storage) in boot menu: cyanogen loading banner shows up and then screen flashes. .then a lit black screen .. nothing happens after that

Your SD is definitely messed up. You will need to reinstall after we get your file saved that you want.
You will need a spare SD card that you can put my bootable CWM recovery on.
Go to my tips thread linked in my signature and download to your PC three files attached there. The one that starts CWM... and the two that start update-stock...
Extract the CWM zip. It will have a 200Mb .img file in it. Burn that to the spare SD just like you did when you made the verygreen SD. Once that is burned and you can see it on your PC, copy the two update-stock... zips to it.
Remove that SD from the PC and put in the nook. Boot. The CWM menu will come up. Select 'install zip from sdcard '. Then select 'choose zip from sdcard'. Scroll through the list and pick 'update-stockemmc-vold-fstab-modified-for-partition4.zip'. Then confirm the selection. It will flash the zip. Remove the CWM card and reboot to stock.
Insert the verygreen SD and you should be able to connect your USB and see partition 4 on the PC as 'sdcard'.
To return your stock to original after retrieving your file, just go through the process of flashing the other update file with CWM. But most people like leaving it modified so that they can always use just one SD for both systems.

I did exactly same, but could not see partition 4 on the pc as 'sdcard'. I see two drives 1. mynookcolor ( i can access all files in it), and 2. a removable disk drive I:/ ( that i can not access). I do not see my files (see pic below) those are on the 4th partition of sd card.

You need to mount the card in settings. Go to settings, device info, SD card. And choose 'mount SD card'.

It is already mounted. It shows sd card memory (not available), unmount SD card (\unmount the sd card for safe removal), and format sd card (format (erase) the sd card). However, only third option is active others are grey/inactive.

If it says unavailable and the first two are greyed out, that means it is not mounted. Pull it out and put it back in... wait you had the cable unplugged when you checked that didn't you? You should have.

I tried as told... number of times.. but same result.. I do not see any drive for sdcard. I see a removable drive F:/ (that i cant access) other than mynookcolor e:/ all time.

I did it number of times.. the results are same. the nc detects a sd card but two areas a re grey..Everytime when i plug usb my nc to laptop, it shows a mynookcolor drive and a removable disk f:\ drive which can not be accessed. I have used another laptop but it is same...

What I am asking is with the USB cable removed, what does the settings show? If you remove and replace the SD with the settings window open, is there any difference? You say it detects it, how do you know that?
Edit: I have been searching for a solution for you. There are two ways to see those files with your PC. To view it in Windows, you must make several complicated changes to your drivers. I'm sure you do not want to do that. The other way is to use Linux. It has the ability to see and mount multiple partitions on an SD. You can either find someone who has a Linux system to do it for you or you can make yourself a Ubuntu Live CD that you can boot with your PC. None of these options are easy, which is why I was trying to do it the other way on your nook.
I don't know why your system is not mounting that SD properly. Even if those changes I had you make were not there, it should at least mount partition one on the nook.

The card is not written correctly... if you format it in the nook... you will see it on your computer... then you can remove it... and try writing the uSDcard image again with win32diskimager

Dizz, he was trying to figure out how to get his data off of partition 4 before he reformats and starts again. I was hoping he could do it with the nook, but it is not reading it. I had him modify emmc so it can see partition 4, but no luck here. Do you have any ideas?

I just had another thought. Put the card in the PC and open with your partition software. Delete partition one, two and three. Then maybe windows can see partition 4, since it is now partition one. You may have to move it to the beginning of the SD, but I don't think you have to.
Edit: I was able to test this on my spare SD card with the EaseUS partition program and it works. Be sure to give it a drive letter.

so, if i do that .. will i be able to get all my applications back and running..i have some paid google apps on my usd. i also tried to make an image of the usd and tried to use boot from this new image written usd.. but it is not booting from the new one..

so, if i do that .. will i be able to get all my applications back and running..i have some paid google apps on my usd. i also tried to make an image of the usd and tried to use boot from this new image written usd.. but it is not booting from the new one..

No, your installed apps are stored on partition 3. But if you bought them, google lets you redownload and install to as many devices as you want, as long as you are logged in to your Google Play account. What you will get back is things you had stored on 'sdcard' (pictures, books, music and other files like your xls files you wanted, what you saw in that screenshot you posted.)

I just had another thought. Put the card in the PC and open with your partition software. Delete partition one, two and three. Then maybe windows can see partition 4, since it is now partition one. You may have to move it to the beginning of the SD, but I don't think you have to.
Edit: I was able to test this on my spare SD card with the EaseUS partition program and it works. Be sure to give it a drive letter.

I had thought of this before I commented about the SD being not formatted correctly... should only have to delete partition 1 ("boot") since windows should use the first fat partition....
However...
Since the nook doesn't show "unmount" or ""sd card memory" active... it is certainly not reading partition 1 correctly.
He can flash my B&N 1.4.1 with SASD vold.fstab edits to see partition 4 (if it can read it) and transfer everything from that partition.

Nook recovery and SD card...?

I recently purchased a nook hd+, went through leapinlar's tutorial on how to boot into cwm, root, and modify my stock nook with a custum rom(carbon) on a 1gb sd card. I just purchased a 32db sd card and I want to know the process or is there a process to put twrp recovery on my nook and be able to boot into it without having to put the 1gb sd card in every time I want to get into recovery. I've searched some but get more confused the more I look and I don't feel like bricking my nook. Can I also boot into recovery with carbon rom? I've tried by going through the power menu, reboot and by turning off the nook and hitting power and the "n" key and neither will get me into recovery. From what I've read I think I have to put the "ovation-sdcard-twrp-files.zip" file on the 32gb sd card but not sure on the procedure. So if any one can give me a dumb down version of what I have to do to be able to keep my 32gb sd card in the nook at all times and still get into recovery like any other nexus or android phone would do, I would greatly appreciate it.
P.S. I have formatted the 32gb sd card with sdformatter but was unsure if I was supposed to use partition software or the zip file for sd cards larger than 4gb.

Never mind, I figured out that I never added the 6028 internal cwm zip and that was my problem, now I can boot into recovery.
