Hi all!
I want to open this thread because I don't understand why Samsung galaxy tab can read USB drive without root permission using its file explorer, while nexus 7 need to be root!
What is the difference between them?
Why nexus need it?
Can never been a ROMs that can solve this problem?
Tnx guys
First off, you don't need root to use OTG to read a flash drive with a Nexus 7. You need the proper cable and the Nexus 7-specific app from the Play Store. Secondly, the difference between the nexus and the Tab is they are made by different companies. Google has a reason for this, they want you to buy multimedia content from the Play Store. That's why they sell the Nexus at cost or at a loss because they make it up on sales from their Play Store. Samsung gets nothing when you buy stuff from the Play Store so they don't care if you have access to other media with the Tab. They make their money on the device and it is significantly more expensive for that reason.
Couldn't have possibly said it better myself, spot on.

But stick mount needs root permission, doesn't it?
Sent from my LT22i using xda app-developers app
You don't need Stickmount to access a USB drive with an OTG cable, which is what the OP is asking about.
well, you can see usb drives in the usbdisk folder but you cant edit the stuff, even with stickmount i cant delete files from my externel ddd
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
^That may be true, but the OP only asked about being able to read a USB drive. With the setup I referred to earlier I can at least copy from the USB device to my Nexus. My primary reason for reading a USB drive is so I can take music and movies with me when I travel without having to sacrifice storage space on my Nexus to do so.:good:
first of all, tnx you guys for replyes!
so, you say that I can read usb drive without root's permission, but it is true if i buy the nexus manager app!
so is a problem of kernel or android rom?

Works with the Captivate.

The Epic media hub works lol.
It's a nice app. Very fast and video quality is awesome. If the price of renting movies and tv shows was $1 like Redbox I could actually see myself using this sometimes.
How do you insall it if you do not mind me asking?

Seeing as how you are brand new I will help you out.
Download the file and transfer it to your phone. Download apps installer or some other file manager from the market, most require your phone to be rooted. Click on the file and install.
Next time though make sure you read around the forum as it is discussed in lots of places how to install apk files.
The app looks nice, but who is going to pay $3 for one episode of a tv show? If Samsung is going to play in this space they better get the cost down or everyone is going to pass them buy.
Personally, I don't even like paying $1 for something i can transfer from my DVR.
so.... unsupported file type?
I downloaded Iron Man from the media hub and my captivate says "device does not support requested file type" has anyone else had an issue with this?
Mine won't play the picture. Frustrating

No need to root your phone. You just need to sideload the apk.
Here's some links on how to do that

Awesome! Too bad it's becoming something I might not ever use. Still wanted to say thanks for sharing this.
Wouldn't you need to root the phone as there is already a Media Hub app on /system?

Bah - my brother has the Epic and was able to rent/dl movies from it.
Of course the Captivate doesn't work at all. Any word from Samsung if they are currently working on a fix? Or is this yet another lockdown from AT&T to prevent us from using it and just missed the "to be removed" on the ol' checklist?
works great. The TV section is lacking but the Movie selection is quite impressive.
Are you saying that you're able to watch movies?
Mine just shows a black screen too

Hi Guys,
I have an I957 8.9 tab.
On the samsung site they have this
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EPL-1PLRBEGSTA
It says it allows us to transfer from flash drive or SD. Not sure if this also means that I can play off these devices directly.
So basically I'm wondering if anyone who has this can shed some light. If I use a flash drive with my music and movies on it, can I play them directly or do I have to copy them to the tab first?
Thanks
Of course you can plan music/video directly from the attached USB drive or SD card.
Thanks. Off to buy one.
None of the videos or reviews on youtube or samsung's lit mentioned this ability, I was starting to have doubts.
Cheers
Just to tag on the first response, sure can. I do it all the time.

The guide book can be found at the link below.
https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=gKmQD47OvCYC
Some pretty good info inside. On pages 67-69 it talks about connecting USB keyboards, mice and other devices. It states that if connecting more than one device you should use a powered hub to reduce power drain on your tablet. I am holding out hope for OTG USB memory support although there is no mention of it.
I love that parts of the guidebook are unfinished. Pages 24-25 have several unimportant sections that just read Content to come. Real classy, Google. (Not that I care, I can't wait for my tablet to arrive!)

You're forgetting that this guidebook was only published early so that the developers (ie those with Nexus 7's) could see and use it. The complete version will be out with the general release of the Nexus 7.

Nope Otherwise it would be my go-to reader...very smooth, great display, etc. You can look at the files that it breaks the books up into if you "pin" one of their free books to your device.

The main thing is that it allows you to hook up these devices without a powered hub, which means we have power. Even if it does have some sort of hangup with storage, I doubt it'll be more than a week or two before that gets modded.
Long story short, it looks like we have the hardware that we need for Host/OTG!
Any chance someone could put a copy of the guidebook on here somehow for those of us that can't get books etc. from Play Store.
Didn't get Play Store credit or any free content at all here in Ireland but at least got my hands on a device

I know this isn't really N7 related, but i noticed it more today when i received my N7. Google music STILL isn't available for UK users. It's been public in the US for nearly a year now. Google need to step up their game. Really disappointing. Sorry for ranting but pretty pathetic it's taken them this long and they still aren't any closer to making it available to people outside the US.
North America isn't the only place people buy you're products Google!
Blame the studios and all the work required for licensing.

Apple worked on it for years before managing to strong arm the studios. It will happen, but right now the mindset must be "well, we have our stuff on iTunes. Don't all them young folk have iPhones?"
And yes, all music executives are out of touch elderly men who don't know that not all touchscreen phones are iPhones.
Not only music, we can't buy films either, only rent.
With the Nexus 7 being so Play oriented I would have hoped they would have struck some kind of deal by now.
Hey
Its not hard to do, just use something like hotspot shield, sign up, then once its done, you wont have to do it again, it'll work. I did it when it first came out and its been working ever since.
It is a shame though, you guys in the US have a lot more
I used tunnelbear (free) signed up and setup in 10 mins, working on my phone and n7, just glad i have an unlimited data contract :victory:
As the others have said, use a VPN to sign up. That is the only time (except for if you try to purchase muzak) that Google checks your geo-location. After that you can start uploading your music and playing it with the app on your 7.

How the heck did you get your android devices working with tunnel bear? I can't find the VPN servers anywhere

I think its probably the bpi blocking them. They are not happy that google isn't more proactive at removing what they consider copyright infringing sites from their search listings. Maybe googles new policy to move sites down the search rankings will mollify them.

You just need to use it on a pc long enough to go to music.google.com and register. Then you no longer need a proxy unless you want ti try and buy music, buying music though needs a us payment card.

Ya I gotcha now.... I thought you were accessing the market from your n7 through the VPN. Buying a prepaid MasterCard and registering it to an american address should allow purchases though......

I gave up on Google Music when I realized just how terrible my DSL upload speed is. I didn't really care to have to wait days upon days for my music to upload to Google, so I just rsync'd it to my server right here on my gigabit LAN and fired up Subsonic. Once I donated a few bucks to unlock the premium mobile streaming license, I was golden.
Note: DDNS would be a severe +1 in this scenario. I already had it set up, so I could point to my specific URL instead of my IP which Verizon changes every other day anyway.
Used tunnelbear to sign up and working fine on my N7 but the market won't install onto my HTC sensation because of the device country - do I just need to sideload (given my google account is now music enabled?)

When you say "market won't install" do you mean it won't let you install Google Play Music? Yeah that's normal. You can either sideload or use something like Market Enabler.

Quick video I put together about some neat options for limitless storage on the Nexus 7. I was going to do a write-up in this thread but the video is fast-paced enough that I'm not going to bother for now, perhaps tomorrow when I'm less busy I'll do a text write-up of it all.

Thank you for the video. I learned a lot. I'm new to xda and I've been looking for the answer to this question everywhere, but have yet to find it. I bought a 64gb sandisk cruzer usb drive to use with my otg cable with the stickmount app. Because of limited storage, I was wondering if I could actually save installed applications to the flash drive. In other words, if I can use a feature similar to "save to sd card" for apps, but have the apps save to my flashdrive. If anyone could make a video or just type up a response, I would really appreciate it.

The one solution I can think of (and I'll test it once I get home) is to use symlinks. I'll see if that sort of solution works with stickmount.

I'm going to put together a tutorial tomorrow on getting cifsmanager set up.
Which OTG cable are you using? Where did you get it?
Thanks for the info! Was wondering how you are making your network share accessible over the internet when you say that your network share is web facing. Is there an easy way to set this up in DDWRT, or is this with a VPN connection of some sort? Thanks!
