"This app is compatible with your device" When browsing Play Store? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On all my other Android devices I can install apps from my laptop via the Play website. Can I not do that on my Fire HD even though it tells me I can, or am I missing something?

I am curious as well if there is a way to tweak the kfhd to download more apps from the playstore...like lie to it that ot is some other ics device

Ummmm. No, as far as I know. I don't see how or why this would work until the KF2 gets a real OS on it. Once it down, I do not see why it shouldn't. For now though, I don't know of any ways it's possible. Back to browsing on the device for you! [EDIT] I was wrong! The app is on my device. It was sitting in front of me for an hour or so when I turned it on to do stuff and found the app I pushed on it there! So it does work in theory, it may be slow for you, or some other issue, but it should work it seems!

Yes, this IS possible. I will look into it and post. It's a file you have to tweak, I did it before on tablets I just am completely blanking out since it's been a year or two. You will probably need something like RomToolbox. That's what I bought ages ago and use on every device I hack, just a personal preference but you will need a "build.prop editor".

Here use this app it will switch you device to make it look like a different device and allows you to download more apps.

I use market helper as well. Has limitations but until a full customised rom bypasses this issue it's not a bad 'get round'

Without play store you'll probably not get it working. Afirehds are really locked down, almost as bad as apple.

sideload
What I have been doing is sideloading. I will download the app onto my phone, backup the app with Astro File Manager, then move the apk to like a shared dropbox account. Once you have the .apk you can install the app. :good: Have you got the app yet? I skimmed through and didnt look.
I side load all day. I've frozen all of Amazon's apps and replaced a such of the system as I can. Using a different launcher I ow have an almost Android kindle lol

If that's vanilla "PBS KIDS Video (Kindle Tablet Edition)" then I can report that it works just fine on Nook HD+. I've added it to my amazon library, too bad we have to go around "incompatibility" (as amazon appstore reports) like that.
I wish there was more people interested in this app for other android tablets, we could start a petition to pbs or something.
Is there a way for me to download my "(Kindle Tablet Edition)" apps without owning a kindle device? like downloading it to an emulator of some sort and copying the apk over?

Yes it is. If you have the Amazon OS, you can use Amazon apps to install it. If you don't, good luck. I tried and it wouldn't even let me download the apk.

Clearly amazon doesnt want all amazon apps to run on other android devices (technically they all should). I sometimes think theyd prefer people not to know that kindle is an android device simultaneously promoting amazon appstore with android apps, depending on situation with profit in mind.

I ran into the same issues... I wonder if there's some loophole. Back when I initially tried it, I screwed around with build.prop to change the model name or something, but that didn't work. Oh well. I'll just have to use their mobile website.
No, if it is specified for a Kindle, a Kindle must download it. It won't even show up in the app store APK if it realizes your not using a Kindle.

So at one point wifi on the tablet went out and I got a browser page "Website not available"
http://pbskids.org/video?kindle
Seems like the whole app is nothing more than just a browser opening a website, which is still pretty cool because that way I can put the app into Kid Mode. I wish I could do that with video files on the tablet.
Is there anyone that could grab the reading rainbow apk off the kindle store for me? It would be great! Thanks. Also, anyone get the Amazon Video apk to work with custom ROMs? Any info would be great.

Onlive (Cloud gaming) for KF HD?

Hi guys I got what I thought was the correct .apk from the net. Emailed it to myself the opened it in my Kindle. It installs but says hardware not supported need at least 7" screen to use, or words to that effect??
Im new to this, am I doing something wrong?
Thanks in advance :good:
Are you rooted with market installed, I'm guessing not if you needed to email it. Root and install play store. It works fine. Mass effect infiltrator is the same, needed Google play before it would work.

After rooting your device, it should work. I have tested Onlive before, and it ran everything OK. If you need help rooting search around the Kindle Fire HD Forums to see how.

downloading "incompatible apps" from Amazon App Store

Hi,
I've recently gotten CM 10.1 working (more or less) on my KFHD 7. I'd like to spoof the device ID in build.prop so that I can download certain apps from the Amazon App Store. Currently I experience the infamous "This App is not compatible" error since the tablet isn't stock,
Does anyone know the values I'll need to modify to make my tablet "appear" to be stock for the purposes of Amazon Apps? I searched this but haven't found the answer I'm looking for.
Thank you!
Until reading this I was unaware there was an appstore for non amazon kindle devices by amazon, just downloaded it from their website and installed angry birds star wars and haven't had a problem, what app is giving you problems? I can't really help if its a paid app, my account is linked to my moms credit card since I don't have one, and she rarely would let me use that, I only had to put it on record to use the appstore.

This is related to my other topic on this forum - it's for HBO Go Kindle Tablet Edition (free). The edition from the Play Store refuses to work on my modded KFHD, and the Amazon App Store won't let me download theirs unless I'm on the factory OS.
Ah, yea its not in my search results, and idk if this applies to you, but last time I transferred a app off my moms kindle that was free and put it on mine I couldn't even run it, kept saying I didn't own a license, and I was like its free why do I need a license... If u have your kindle os backed up u could backup Ur cm os and flash back temporarily and copy the HBO app from your /data/apps folder to your sdcard, flash back to Ur cm backup and try installing it manually. Lot of work for one app though. If you wanna edit the build, prop I think the name u change it to is KFTT

I've tried naming it KFTT in the build.prop but it doesn't help. I've tried tweaking a few other values as well, and the only thing that seems to happen is that Amazon Apps ITSELF starts to force close upon launch.
I don't understand build.prop enough to know: Does it just contain identifying info? Or does it affect the way the tablet operates? If it's just identifiers, I could theoretically copy the one from either the stock OS or Kinology right?
To your other suggestion: I've had mixed results sideloading from a "working" ROM. I admit I haven't really spent a ton of time on that option, but it's possible that it may be the solution.
Well I ended up building my system in parallel - I've got two active ROMs (stock and CM 10.1) and I'm switching between by using TWRP.
With this method, I downloaded the app from the Amazon App Store, backed up the APK from ES File Explorer, restored CM10.1, then installed the backed up app.
Still doesn't work - force close on HBO Go immediately upon launch. Frustrating!
While your in cm try installing catlog and looking at the error that occurs right at the time if crashing in the logs. Might be debugable.

Super interesting:
I downloaded catlog as you suggested, and found that HBO Go is crashing on a permission issue when attempting to access PREVENT_POWER_KEY. Upon further research, it looks like Hashcode discovered this almost a year ago -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30963540&postcount=1534
It looks like that particular bug has not yet been ironed out. I wonder why??
Well thatg was on another kindle is if it was a year ago I believe, so maybe he didn't notice in his current build, you should ask him about it on his cm thread in android development, unless he sees this thread and happens to reply first.

[Q] Kindle Fire 11.3.1.0 Rooted?

Hi everyone. New kindle user here. First off I would like to ask if my kindle is fully rooted? In the current version info it says current version 11.3.1.0_user_310084920. I followed the Root Kindle Fire HD "7" 20013 (KFSOWI) 11.3.1.0 tutorial but the kindle never restarted on its own after the rooting process I had to manually turn it off then back on. The kindle is the new 2013 version with no camera and 16GB of memory from Best Buy.
Also, is there anyway I can install the google play market on this? Or, if possible, dualboot a non kindle brand Android OS on this?
Hi Dan. To check for root I would suggest getting the app Esfile explorer and go into the settings and turn "Root Explorer" on. Then see if you can cruise through the root folders /data or /system and actually see files in those folders. If you see files inside those folders you should have root. Also, be sure to install a super su or superuser app to keep apps from Willy nilly acquiring root privileges.
As of this moment I am unaware of anyone getting google play to work properly. Lots of peeps have it installed but working as its supposed to? Mine isn't. I can browse but there is no searching or downloading. As for a non kindle brand os all I can say is that patience is a virtue. The boatloader its still locked down and I'm not aware if anyone has figured out a work around yet. Till then we are all waiting on the ingenuity of the devs. I would not suggest trying anything until we hear that fer sure someone got it. I for one don't want a brick. Cheers.

[Q] Google Play still sees as HD+

I just flashed the newest CM11 build yesterday on my HD+. Its running great and many thanks for the threads on getting it done as painlessly as possible. I do have a question and not sure if there is a workaround.
Google Play still sees the device as a stock HD+. That means it still thinks I am running Android 2.2 Nook OS so a lot apps are "not compatible with your device". I hoped that one perk of upgrading to 4.4 was that I could now get the latest and greatest apps and other features that only work on the higher OS levels.
Any way to fix this? What I dont understand is that I have an old HP Touchpad running Tenderloin and it shows up as "unknown maker" cm-tenderloin device. When I updated the HD+ I went through the process of logging into my accounts just like any other droid device.
Thanks for any help.
There is not much you can do. Even when other users manually edit the build.prop file to change it to another device, Play Store still does not show many more apps compatible. That is because Play Store looks at more properties that name. It looks at screen size, density and whether it has a camera, GPS, etc.
What you need to do is enable unknown sources and either use another store like Amazon.com or get the apk file from another device and install it manually.

Thanks for the tip. I will try the unknown source route.
I don't see why it's still recognizing yours as 2.2 though. Before installing the 4.4.4 KITKAT OS, Instagram and iHeartRadio were deemed incompatible with my device. However, once I installed the new OS, they installed and ran flawlessly even without features such as a camera. Then again I AM using the HD instead of the HD+ so maybe that has something to do with it?
