[Q] Cyanogen Mod9 | Deleted build.prop -won't boot up? - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, as you can see I have an HP Touchpad running CyanogenMod9 with 12/23 Nightly build.
I was modifying the build.prop to make it look like that of a Nexus 7. Of course, I made a copy of the original build.prop and put it in the sdcard. When I wanted to revert to the original copy, I couldn't find it. Stupidly, I deleted the new build.prop and rebooted the device. It went to bootloader, I chose cyanogenmod and there were no boot animations and the screen froze to a blank, black screen. I also deleted my nandroid backup (stupid mistake.) Can you guys please help me? I can't turn it off, I would just have to let the battery drain.
Thanks, SidaJeremy

See if you can push it through adb. I know you can get to adb access from cwm. Another choice is to boot into webos and do things from there. Also, you can reboot it by holding the power button and center button for a while.

Hold the Home and Power buttons to force close, takes 10/20 seconds .

Check your pm.

@confab - I installed TWRP Recovery. Might try it on TWRP.

Hey, Thanks guys, figured it out myself.
I didn't need to copy a build.prop or use ACMEUninstaller or ACMEinstaller. I only needed to flash the latest nightly build and rebooted to CyanogenMod 9. No blank screens whatsoever. So if some stumbles upon a similar problem on any device, tell them this. Thanks.
Cheers, SidaJeremy

First, you are at the wrong screen. You should not be in fastboot mode in the bootloader for updating themes, you should be in recovery mode.
I suggest you perform a wipe to possibly bring your phone back to normal at least. It can be done by turning off the phone, then pressing and holding the back and home button until you enter recovery mode.
From there press alt + w to wipe the phone.
Then restart by pressing back + home.
Next, before installing the theme, make sure its the correct one for your phone. Check with the author if it was made for RC30 or RC8, and if it is a non-wipe theme, because if it is not, you will be stuck at the Tmobile G1 splash screen (aka be in an indefinite loop) like your current situation.
If you are trying to install browser.apk (im assuming the multitouch browser - please correct me if im wrong) you will need to install JF 1.41 first. By default it will include the multitouch version of browser.apk
Please provide more information about your situation, and keep us posted.

Sorry, I should have provided more information, and explained that the 2nd half of this post was my original post, which was just me asking how to correctly use ADB. I do already have JF 1.41, I upgraded yesterday. It wasn't my first theme I installed either. I was using Vintage War (for the Dream), but it hadn't been updated for 1.41, so I was trying the standalone apk adb push method found in this forum, which is where this post first oriented.
I was in recovery mode for installing themes, I'm using JF 1.41 RC30, with the HardSPL bootloader. Initially after installing the theme it would go blank after the g1 splash, so I had tried to install it again hoping it would fix it, unfortunately my thumb is a bit to fat and I hit alt W instead of S, anyways that is what put me into this infinite loop.
But like I said this wasn't my first time trying to mod the phone, I've had it rooted for a month or so now, and have been keeping up-to-date.
Any more information I can provide, please let me know. My phone is my livelyhood, I need it. So if anyone can help, the sooner would be better. Either way I am entirely greatful for any help anyone can provide. Thanks in advance!

It is weird how a wipe caused you to go into an infinite loop. Which apk's did you try to push to your phone?
I would suggest to go without using the theme for now. JesusFreke had pointed out that some themes were causing problems for the new 1.41. update. You should check with the author of the theme to see if its compatible with the new 1.41 (which it should be since RC30 1.3, RC30 1.31, and RC30 1.41 are all compatible)

....How do I get out of the loop. My phone doesn't get passed it. There has to be something I can do in console or recovery or something. I'm really sorry if I'm coming off as rude or demanding but I really need a phone, and I need it right now. I don't know what more I can tell you before someone can finally give me a solution (sorry)
1. Download RC29
2. Copy it onto your sdcard
3. Reboot your phone into the SPL with Power+Camera
4. When prompted, press the end key to start the reflash.
Note: this will completely wipe the flash chip on your phone and revert everything back to factory. You will need to re-root your phone and update to JF1.41
Next time, use nandroid to backup before installing themes, etc.

That's easy. Just grab a copy of the fastboot utility and the images off your sdcard in the 'nandroid' directory and boot your phone into the SPL. Plug your phone in via usb and press the back button once and you should see "Serial0" change to "FASTBOOT" Then open up a windows command prompt in the location of the exe you downloaded and run:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot reboot
Your phone will come back up with all of your applications, settings etc from when you did the backup. Keep in mind you need the HardSPL to do this though(look for three androids on skateboards in SPL). The G1 factory bootloader does not support fastboot, only NBH images that come from the factory.
Hi, my situation is a bit worse:
I have a Dev Phone, upgraded to JFv1.41.
Today, I got the pop up message telling me to do a "system holiday update 2 of 2". I press "Update now" and the phone got reboot. Since then... I could not get through the first screen that has the word "Android" at all, not even to the screen where Android icon is flashing. It just freezes right there.
The only way to turn off is to take out battery. I could not enter recovery mode through pressing Home+Power. One time, the screen actually turned into weird color patterns. Is there anything I can do? consider that I don't have any nandroid back up image at all?
I tried to download the DREAIMG-RC29.zip, unzip and copy to the sdcard, then reboot into the SPL with Power+Camera but nothing happens, just a 4 color screen said "serial0".
Thanks in advance.
Isn't the 4 color screen the standard bootloader that ships with retail G1's (not a dev phone bootloader)?

I had the same problem, almost verbatim. ADP1.1, JFv1.41, ran the Holiday update 1 of 2, no problems, did the 2 of 2 update, got stuck at the flashing Android boot screen. Pulled the battery, rebooted, same thing, waited 2-3 minutes at the flashing screen and was just about to pull the battery again and then all of a sudden the damn thing came to life, the OS loaded up and now everything's working fine. Gave me quite a scare.
ummm actually the fastboot utility wont work for my computer soo what shoud i do.... if anything i need a really good reply something long cause im new to this and my fone wont get off the android sign.

Why have you just hijacked a 5 month old thread? You haven't given use any details either. Fastboot is available for all OS's, it will work on your computer, you just probably don't know how to use it. Please make a new thread in the Q&A section where we can help you out there.
This should be closed or moved to Q&A.
hey man just unroot ur phone and root it again u soft bricked ur phone its ok
hey just try to unroot k
hey if u want me to fix it for u just email me at [email protected] and ill help u

N1 wont boot into bootloader! Instead goes to OS

Facts:
Ive searched the site multiple times, cannot find the same issue elsewhere
Ive unlocked my bootloader and rooted my N1, so I know how to access the bootloader/recovery
When I hold down the rollerball and hit power to start the N1, it boots straight to the OS, not the bootloader menu
The OS is: Android 2.2, Build FRF50, Kernel [email protected] #5
The OS doesnt show a cell signal
The OS has lines through moving graphics
The OS crashes to the X graphic with the moving colors about every 30sec to 2 minutes
I can access abd-mac commands via usb, but ./adb-mac reboot recovery just reboots my phone back to the OS again
I tried http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/RE-recovery-img
but the last step of ./adb-mac shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
comes back with "error opening /sdcard/recovery.img: No such file or directory
Im sure the recovery.img is on the sd card
in the gui of the OS I tried looking at the available space of the sd, and it states sd- unavailable
available space - unavailable.
Any more ideas?
I can think of three options:
boot to fastboot by holding the trackball while turning on the phone (you say this doesn't work)
boot to bootloader by holding volume down while turning on the phone
if your OS is stable enough, try installing "Quick Boot" from the market (it requires root). That app has the option to reboot to either bootloader, or recovery
just follow this guide forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795 no such file is because you have to put the recovery image in the root folder of the sd card in other words it should'nt be within another folder when you open and view your sd card.

Thanks pikipirs. vol down while booting doesnt do anything for me either. I cant access anything with market. Is there a way to manually install the "quick boot" app with abd-mac?
Try something like rom manager or quickboot and see if they can get you into recovery?

Actually he hasn't posted an APK, why can't you get it from market again?
My OS isnt stable enough, I have no radio, so I connect via wifi. When I go to the market, it says Loading.... and then the OS crashes to the X graphic with flying colors.... and the market is closed again.

Does ADB work?
Yes, adb-mac command works, but ./adb-mac reboot recovery or ./adb-mac reboot bootloader doesnt boot into the recovery or bootloader, instead it just restarts the phone back to the OS.
Thats why if I can get something to install via adb, I can do it that way, and hopefully get it to the bootloader to install a working rom.
is it stable enough to try to run an app?
amazingly trivial suggestion here, but have you attempted to reset to factory defaults from inside the system? Perhaps this will give you just enough stability to accomplish a recovery load so you can get your phone back to a happy state.
Of course, I have no idea why that would resolve your issue but nobody has suggested it yet and your situation sorta sucks
Best of luck!!
Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, it freezes up when I try to do factory defaults again. But I did a factory default before I put the bad rom on it, so its pain without any apps currently. Some apps will work like the browser for a few minutes. Not many other apps to use, since it was wiped prior.
Well, looks like Im going to send it to HTC. They said it will be $196+ to fix it. They have to replace the main board which, if its the only issue, is $196. Ill be shipping it out tomorrow. Anyone with any last suggestions before I bite the bullet on $200? I guess it beats buying the phone again for $580!

Tried it, just boots to the OS still.
Try safe mode? Turn it off, wait for the X and the unlock icon, then hold trackball until it boots. Should say "Safe mode" in the lower left corner. Might be able to get it running stable and fix from there.

[Q] Stuck in ACMEInstaller mode

I tried searching but can't find any solutions to my question, so here goes.
I uninstalled Android because I was getting random reboots. When I tried to install it again using ACMEInstaller3 it got stuck because it couldn't find the CMInstall folder. I tried doing the hard reset but it just says the buttons were pressed on the linux lines. Any help would be much appreciated!

never experienced that issue, maybe just wait until your battery dies (will happen eventually) and then try to reboot into webos creating a proper cminstall folder?

Press the power and home buttons for as long as it takes, shouldn't be more than 30 secs and it will turn of .
You do not want the battery to totally drain as this will cause even more problems.
do you have moboot and cwm recovery installed properly? if you have cwm installed then yuo can just flash the the rom from there.

[Q] Sony Xperia TX stuck in bootloop after beats audio installer

I installed the beats audio installer and things seemed to be working ok, except that my phone volume was either lower than expected or overly loud where the external speaker had distortion. So I opened the app and clicked uninstall from within it. Afterwards I rebooted my phone as it said and now it's stuck in a bootloop. My brother rooted my phone for me when I went home for a visit for me. I'm not root or phone savvy. I live in South Florida and I can't make the 12 hour drive back there anytime soon. How do I fix this? I had performed a nandroid backup but I noticed my external storage was 100% full after I did that a few times. So I went into storage in settings and deleted the clockwork mod stuff sitting at 6.86 gigs. That must have been the backup in there I know. Now with no backup I did a factory reset, still a bootloop. Phone is rooted still. I'm thinking maybe the audio drivers were damaged. Please help how do I fix this? Thanks!

I don't think the audio drivers were damaged. A factory reset wipes the /data partition, which is where all the personal data is stored, but it does not touch the /system partition, which is probably where the Beats Audio installs/modifies files, since it probably needs root (I'm just assuming, don't know which app that is nor what it does).
Since you have Clockwork Mod (CWM), I'm assuming your recovery is still working, right? When you start up your phone, the LED should turn on (either blue or purple), and then you should press volume up/down to enter recovery. Do you have an external SD card?
yes I have an external sd card

Ok, since you're talking about custom ROMs, I'm assuming you have an unlocked bootloader. You won't hardbrick your phone unless you mess up real bad, although I am wondering how on earth you ended up with "no OS". That would only happen if you wiped the /system partition. Here's what you're going to do:
1.- Download the links number 1,3 and 4 from this post.
2.- Connect your SDcard to your computer with a USB adapter or an SD adapter, and copy all those downloaded files to your external SD card.
3.- Once that is done, put the SDcard back in your phone, and turn it on and enter recovery.
4.- Navigate recovery with volume buttons up/down and Power button for enter, and select the "Wipe Data" option, which is the same as a Factory Reset (just for good measure, since you already did this); it will ask you to confirm the operation, select "Yes".
5.- Do the same with "Wipe Cache".
6.- Go to "Install ZIP from SDcard1", and, with vol +/- navigate to the file you downloaded in number 1 from the link above (filename should be "LT29i_Rockers_X_ROM_v1.2_03292014-signed.zip"), and press the Power button to confirm that you want to flash that file, then confirm with "Yes".
7.- Once that completes, do the same for the file from number 3 (filename should be "LT29i_9.2.A.1.199_kernel.zip").
8.- Finally, do the same with the file from number 4 (filename should be "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip").
9.- Reboot your phone.
It should power up now, and if you have any doubts regarding the procedure, post back and/or read through the original thread here.
I just posted how to do method 2, described in the original link.
EDIT: In my opinion, there is no "stable" version of Kitkat. FXP has a CM11 ROM, but it has kernel issues regarding battery life; if you can live with a battery not lasting more than 7 - 9 hours, maybe you'd want to try that, but I wouldn't recommend it.

YES the bootloader is unlocked my brother did it when he rooted it back home but he's not familiar with many of the custom roms. THANKS! I'm going to try this. I erased the OS last night. Before all of this I installed One Click Scroll from GooglePlay. It worked perfectly but it install TeamWin recovery on my phone and it's still there. I'm not familiar with it at all, but it seems to work perfectly on the device. Ok I'll let you know how it goes thank you even if this doesn't work!

I'm not familiar with it at all, but it seems to work perfectly on the device. Ok I'll let you know how it goes thank you even if this doesn't work!

Well, directions still apply to TWRP; wipe /data and /cache, flash files in the order posted previously, then reboot. Good luck.
I love you!

Glad to be of help. If you must, just clicking on the "Thanks" button on a post is good, that's what it's for. And you'll have to probably find one of matt's posts too (don't know who you're talking about) and do the same, I guess.
THANKS!
Where is the thanks button? Lol

Clean up the language.
- no TWRP (custom recoveries) on this device
- to exit from fastboot untether and long press power until it turns off
- start with the forum index and read what you can/can't do with this device and how to accomplish it

yes got it to reboot by holding volume and power finally ,it did not work the 1st few tries for some reason
i know i was in the TWRP screen before when i flashed the rom and xposed but now i forget how to get back to it now
so what happens if i mess up my system with an experimental APK, i am trying to add miracast
if it messes up something then will i be able to recover? or would i have to make a backup with TWRP 1st?

sorry i can't edit it, it won't let me
also i have looked around and i found this .apk
http://cord-cutters.wonderhowto.com...rooted-android-device-running-kitkat-0156212/
(it says kitkat but there was a thread on here on it and it said kitkat or above)
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001616583
and i searched and searched but i have not found any reports of it ever being tried on the 2015 5th gen fire 7
i can only seem to get to the thread in google cache ,and there are only reports of it being tried on the HD fire 7 and all posts end around 2014 so i am not sure if it will work, but what is the worst thing that could happen if i try this? with no backup and TWRP installed? could i still revert everything back?
have you ever heard of anyone trying this specific .apk on this device before?

- have not heard of anyone trying linked apk on this device
- in general custom roms on Amazon devices do not support miracast (multiple devices/multiple roms)
- if you can access the stock recovery menu via <power>+<vol-up> recovery is possible (reload FireOS)
- unlikely a straight apk install will bork the rom; more likely it simply won't work
